DEMOLITION has resumed on the former Royal Derwent Hospital site, with wreckers moving in on Ward 6 (pictured below). Ward 6 was built in 1966 and its demise started several months ago when tiles began to be removed from the roof. After a break of several weeks, work resumed last week. Situated close to Hobart Rd, Ward 6 was in a better state of repair than most of the other abandoned buildings, having been extensively renovated and refurbished in an ultimately unsuccessful project to convert it into a backpacker hostel and shop.
Video and still images of the destruction of Ward 6 can be found at the Willow Court and Royal Derwent Blog website here.

Good to see the old dumps pulled down, they are an absolute eyesore.
ReplyDeleteAs a newcomer, I see it as a balance between what is worth saving due to historical relevance, and what should go because it's just ugly.
ReplyDeleteBuildings like Ward 6 are/where just blots on the area, and detracted from the site as a historical area.
I disagree.
ReplyDeleteThis site had major historical relevance, and shown the evolution of mental health care. Its such as shame it was abandoned the way they were. I can understand how some people would think they are a blot in there current state. Such a waste they were only 50 odd years old and could have been re-used.
And I though Tasmanian has a shortage of low cost housing? Surely the money’s received from State / Fed Government should go towards making these solid buildings and any others that remain fit for residential use?
