Three charged over fire

THREE youths have been charged over an incident that resulted in a vehicle fire behind the Derwent Valley Sport and Recreation Centre, the Derwent Valley Gazette reported today. The New Norfolk Fire Brigade was called to the sports centre in Third Avenue at about 7.15am yesterday morning, where an allegedly stolen van was on fire up against the rear wall of the building.

The vehicle was completely destroyed and minor damage was done to the wall. The centre filled with smoke but was otherwise undamaged.

The vehicle after it was moved away from the building.

  1. I am astonished by the number of fires being lit. If it is our youth, then we really need to divert their energies elsewhere.
What is happening with the old RDH Social Centre? Perhaps DVC could approach various companies to set up a proper gym (eg, YMCA, Zap Fitness, Genesis etc) and part of the premises could be converted to a youth hang out with pool tables, a lounge area etc etc. Not sure if D'FAT is working on any such projects or have previously canvassed such an initiative as their website has no content (which probably sends out the wrong message in itself) but the DVC Information Bulletin D'FAT report doesn't make mention of such a project. I have seen a flier for a mechanics workshop but perhaps just somewhere where the kids can hang out and have ownership of ... (subject to adult supervision but in a relaxed manner).
    Food for thought?

  2. Good food for thought smartie however, the old RDH site does not belong to the DVC - try the owners, you never know, may be worthwhile.
As far as the fires are concerned, it seems that school holiday time is the time when young arsonists do not have any adult supervision and wander quite freely, particularly at night. Good idea to give them somewhere to go tho - D'fat doesn't seem to have addressed any of these issues, seems to be more of a social event hub, such as lan parties, discos etc. An 'own space' would be such a good idea
