Gazette goes digital

The Gazette goes digital
THE Derwent Valley Gazette is among several Tasmanian newspapers which launched digital editions yesterday. The Gazette, Mercury, Sunday Tasmanian and Tasmanian Country can now be read online in their entirety.

The digital newspapers can be trialled here and subscriptions go on sale tomorrow. The price will be the same as the printed newspaper. Unlike traditional newspaper websites, the digital edition is an exact replica of the printed paper. It will be able to be read, page by page, on desktop computers, smartphones and tablet computers.

  1. Boy, this is one of the worst digital newspaper presentations I've seen. Harks back to the days when the Age digital was essentially a PDF of the physical paper.

And the price is far too high. Charging the same price as the physical paper is just not going to work. Exactly how is that justified?

  2. I agree with first comment - there should be a discount after all there are no middle persons involved here - get real Mercury!
And the old Gazette has been very light on since a former editor was promoted out of it - our loss, someone else's gain!

  3. This is a good way to avoid cutting down forests for something that gets quickly thrown away. The application isn't too bad and allows export to ePub, so it can then be read on eReaders, iPads, etc.

  5. @Common Tater: Oops! My earlier comment about cutting down forests was insensitive in the light of the Boyer workers, I agree. I understand Boyer is all plantation softwood now anyway, so the only forests being cut down are those that are grown for the purpose, and there is a side-benefit from the carbon those softwood plantations absorb.
