Central Hawks v Claremont (at Bothwell)
THIS MATCH HAS BEEN RELOCATED TO OATLANDS
THE Central Hawks are still looking for their first win of the season and may be sensing an upset when they host Claremont who usually don’t play well on the road. The Hawks are fresh from the bye last week and will look to use the Bothwell ground to their advantage and attempt to get off to a good start to surprise the visiting side.

The Magpies were gallant winners last weekend in a come from behind victory over Brighton and this will give them plenty of confidence. They must work on their start and the small ground will probably suit their bigger players as they have strong bodies around the contest and need to assert their influence early in the contest. The Hawks' last game saw them play their best football of the year and the bye probably came at a bad time but if they can reproduce their last effort against Brighton then they are well in this contest.

The Hawks should give plenty of cheek in front of their home crowd but the Magpies have too much at stake and should take the points and remain in the top six.

Brighton v Cygnet
BRIGHTON are back on their home ground and face a real contest when they host a vastly improved Cygnet who are desperate for a win to remain in the hunt for the top six berth. The Robins will be on the rebound after stopping badly last weekend away from home against Claremont, losing by two points and really need to be striving to play four consistent quarters. The Port were very brave against highly rated Dodges Ferry and only need to bring that form away from home and they could take the points in this vital game as Brighton are edging them out of a top six berth.

The big Pontville ground should suit the Port's running brand of football and if they can win the stoppages and get the ball out wide then they will create plenty of scoring opportunities. The home side has some very big forwards and if these players get a one out contest then they will be hard to hold out from kicking a winning score. In a game that could go down to the wire, the Robins are always hard to beat at home and will have too much at stake and should take the points but must be at their best against a quality opposition who need to perform better on the road if they are to make the finals.

Dodges Ferry v East Coast
DODGES Ferry are back at home and will be confident of recording another victory when they host East Coast in what could be a fiery game of football. You would expect the Bombers to really have a crack early in the contest but the Sharks should have too much class and experience and with a strong home ground advantage with a very vocal crowd they should record a comfortable victory and remain in the six.

Sorell v Lindisfarne
SORELL is back at home and taking on the most improved side in the competition in Lindisfarne and face a massive task if they are to cause a really big upset. Sorell needs a good start to remain in the game and they should be competitive for half of the game but the power and class of Lindisfarne should see them pull away and record  a comfortable victory away from home and remain in the top two on the ladder.

Kingborough v Huonville
KINGBOROUGH are at home and looking to continue their good recent form when they host a struggling Huonville and should be confident of a comfortable victory. You would expect Huonville to be competitive for half of the game but Kingborough should pull away in the second half and record a comfortable victory at home.

Returning from the school holiday break, New Norfolk came up against North Hobart from A Division. North played a better style of run-on football and although the New Norfolk boys tried hard all game they could not get on top of  their opponents. Our backline which was led well by Connor Rowbottom was under constant pressure. Regardless of the result it was a good experience for our boys to play a team from a higher division. Goals - NN: Dylan Pearce 3, Brandon King 2, Tyron Rainbird 2, Cody Neads; Best: Brandon King, James Webb, Aiden Pearton, Josh Berry, Jordan Hayden, Daniel Coppleman. All the U/16s players and parents congratulate Jordan Hayden on playing with the NNDFC senior team in their win over Lindisfarne on Saturday. Jordan had been was selected senior coach Mathew Smith during the week to play his first senior game. He put in a great effort for the Eagles and the whole team is very proud of him. SFL MATCHES, ROUND 11

Lindisfarne v New Norfolk
NEW Norfolk showed why it will be the team to beat again this year, moving to outright premiership favourite when it easily defeated the previously unbeaten Lindisfarne on their home ground by 60 points at the weekend, 18.6 (114) to 6.18 (54). The first term was a real grind as both sides were desperate to get an advantage and while the Eagles kicked the only three goals for the term the Blues were well in the contest but kicked six behinds to trail by 14 points at the first change.

The second term saw New Norfolk really step up a gear and the Blues could not match their intensity as they kicked seven goals to race away to what appeared a match winning lead of 36 points at the main break. The third term saw Lindisfarne match their more fancied rivals but they again fell away in the last term and would have been disappointed with their loss whilst the Eagles performed at their best when it counted.

Best players for the winners were in-form forward Thompson who kicked 10 goals in a magnificent performance. He was well supported by Moles, Heron, Carver and Booth in an even team performance.
Best players for Lindisfarne were Clark, Allison, Bester and Hobden and they now know what will be required to beat the Eagles.

Claremont v Brighton
CLAREMONT really showed they are a top six finals contender when they staged a great fightback to defeat Brighton by a slender two points, kicking 10.9 (69) to 10.7 (67). In a low-scoring first term Brighton kicked a late goal to grab a seven point lead but neither side could get any advantage and a real slog was in order to take the points. The second term saw the Robins slowly start to pull away as they kicked five goals and seemed to have the game in control at half time, leading by 19 points.

The visitors increased their lead to 24 points at the last change and the game appeared to be over but the Magpies really rallied in front of their home crowd and kicked the only four goals of the quarter to snatch victory from an unlucky Brighton in a great performance under pressure. Best players for a valiant Claremont were Cowley, Kamaric, Bedford and Bennett whilst Curtain kicked three valuable goals up forward. Better players for a very disappointed Brighton were Howlett, Whitford, Tubb with four goals and Triffitt and they now drop to sixth on the ladder.

East Coast v Kingborough
KINBOROUGH continued their good recent form and easily defeated the East Coast by 76 points, 21.11 (137) to 9.7 (61).

Huonville v Sorell
HUONVILLE recorded its second win of the season and moved above Sorell on the ladder after defeating them by 21 points, kicking 18.5 (113) to 13.14 (92).

Cygnet v Dodges Ferry
DODGES Ferry staved off a gallant Cygnet and moved to third on the ladder with an important seven-point victory, 13.8 (86) to 12.7 (79).

McCrossen calls it quits

MAYOR Martyn Evans this week announced the resignation of Derwent Valley Council deputy general manager Robert McCrossen. Cr Evans said Mr McCrossen would be sorely missed by the many organisations he assists throughout the community. Mr McCrossen had given two month's notice and was leaving after 25 years of service to the council.

Council rates up 5%

THE Derwent Valley Council approved 5% rate increase at its monthly meeting last Thursday night, Mayor Martyn Evans said this would mean an increase of around $55 per property in the municipality. “Council has worked hard to keep rate increases low again this year, and has looked at all possible ways to keep increases to a minimum," Councillor Evans said. “Like families and households across the state, council also has increased operating costs in terms of power and water charges and for the first time has to take into account the possible effects of the carbon tax,” he said.

For the 10th consecutive year, Derwent Valley Council has called for public submissions to the budgetary process. This gives residents of the area a chance to put forward projects for funding that may be overlooked otherwise. “This year we received 28 submissions from the public, with a number of those being included fully in the budget. Some that were not funded this year have been set down for investigation in future years. Community members who put forward submissions will receive formal notification of the status of their submission in the next week or two,” Cr Evans said.

Some of the successful submissions include:

• Stabilisation and sealing of Glebe Road from Lachlan Road to The Avenue;
• Improvement in the line of sight at Molesworth and Collins Cap Rd junction;
• Installation of a safety barrier at Rowbottoms Rd; and
• New seating at Pioneer Avenue and the Esplanade.

Some of the main items in the capital works budget include:

• Provision of pedestrian refuges and disability cross-overs in Burnett St and Montagu St;
• Continuation of works in Lachlan Rd;
• Stormwater works in Humphrey St;
• Investigation works for sewer and toilet works at Red Hills Cemetery; and
• Tynwald Park improvements.

“There are always competing pressures when setting the budget, with robust debate between councillors around which projects should be funded," Cr Evans said. "At the end of the day the decisions councillors make are made with the best interest of the community at heart. I’d like to thank my fellow councillors for their time and Council staff for their dedication and hard work in preparing the budget,” he said.

Crs Evans, Lathey, Bromfield, Graham, Lester, Nicholson, Shaw and Shoobridge voted in favour of the budget and Cr Bester opposed it.

Lindisfarne v New Norfolk
IN the game all the football public have been waiting for this season, the undefeated Lindisfarne today host the red hot New Norfolk in a game for top position and premiership favouritism. The Blues had the bye last weeknd and will have freshened up and rested players to have them in prime condition for the top of the table clash but coming off a bye is always difficult. The Eagles have been winning very easily over the previous weeks and it is not their preferred preparation for a much harder contest but I am sure they will lift and attempt to show they are the best side in the competition.

Both sides have quality midfields and the Blues appear to be a bit quicker across the ground where the Eagles are a lot tougher and stronger brigade and the outcome of this battle should decide the game. Both have quality forwards and if any of these players are given space to lead into then they should be able to generate enough shots at goal to kick a winning score.

The Eagles need to restrict Lindisfarne’s running back line otherwise if they create the loose man they will have too much ability to run the ball through the corridor to set up scoring opportunities. You would expect a big home crowd to be an advantage for Lindisfarne but the Eagles have really been looking for a big challenge. They should be slightly too good but it will be interesting to see how much the Blues have improved.

Claremont v Brighton
Claremont are back at home today and looking to bounce back but should have a real fight on their hands as Brighton have moved up to fourth on the ladder and will be desperate for another win away from home. The Magpies, after a great win the previous fortnight, really collapsed away from home against Dodges Ferry and need to recapture their best form if they are to defeat their talented rivals. The Robins also need to vastly improve after struggling to defeat the bottom of the ladder Central Hawks at home last week and must really lift to play a quality side.

It will be vitally important for Brighton to get off to a good start as in front of a vocal home crowd the Magpies always are a lot better side on their home ground. If Claremont get off to a flying start their confidence grows and they are impossible to defeat. Both sides look evenly matched in the midfield and whichever side gets their key forwards on top and kicks the vital goals will decide this game as any wasted opportunities will be crucial. In a game that could go either way perhaps the Robins may have a little too much class and take the points but Claremont are a lot better side at home and it would not surprise to see them win easily.

Huonville v Sorell
Huonville are back at home and will be confident of recording their second win of the season but face an in form Sorell who won their second game last week  and also see an opportunity to win another game. The Lions were thrashed as expected last weekend by the Fevola show at New Norfolk but their previous game at home was very good and they will be determined to perform well in front of their home crowd. Sorell recorded their second win of the season by defeating East Coast last weekend and would have gained some much needed confidence on how to win games of football. In a game that could go either way you would expect the Lions to win at home as the Sorell Eagles have a poor away record and the opposition will really lift knowing this is a winnable game.

East Coast v Kingborough
East Coast are back at home but face a mammoth task to record their third win of the season when they host the in form Kingborough. You would expect the Bombers at home to be competitive for most of the game but the Tigers have too much firepower and should record a comfortable win away from home to continue their surge up the ladder.

Cygnet v Dodges Ferry
Cygnet are back at home and will be looking to rebound after last weeks poor performance but have a hard task at hand as they host the in form Dodges Ferry who will be looking to consolidate third position on the ladder. You would expect the Port to really perform strongly at home and they should stay in the game for most of the four quarters but the Sharks have an edge in class and should record another win away from home to keep in touch with the top two sides.

Reader's letter: Fevola feedback

WHAT can only be described as a huge success not only for the NNDFC, but for the Derwent Valley as a whole? The footy game at Boyer Oval last Saturday which saw the one and only Brendan Fevola line up for the Mighty Eagles at full forward was just terrific and didn't he turn it on! Not only did Fev kick 18 goals for the game, he brought 5000 people plus the media to watch him do it and along the way made the club a healthy profit.

But the profit didn't just go to the club, it filtered through the community as well. People from out of town who came to watch the game also spent their money around New Norfolk. Whether it be at a take away shop or accommodation or fuel, money was spent and people saw what a lovely place the Derwent Valley really is. The "Give Me 5 for Kids" fundraising run by Heart 107.3FM raised over $2000 at the game. This wasn't just a game of footy, it was much much more. It wasn't just the NNDFC on show, it was the whole Derwent Valley. Where-ever you looked whether it be the news on TV or in the newspapers, the Valley was on show.

Right from the moment Fevola arrived in New Norfolk, he had the people coming from all directions, including the media. The way in which he conducted himself with the many kids at the footy clinic on Friday was just something. Not a child walked away without a smile on their face. Fevola may have had some trouble in the past and haven't we all, but he has proved to one and all that he is a fantastic person both on and off the field. Well done NNDFC. Your group of people lead strongly by vice president Chris Lovell and president Steven Dixon have staged a huge event that not only benefited a proud footy club, but also the Derwent Valley. 10 out of 10! We had a ball.

ROUND 10 REVIEW

New Norfolk v Huonville
NEW Norfolk celebrated Brendan Fevola’s one off game when they easily defeated Huonville at home on the back of a dominant Big Fev by 146 points, kicking 32.18 (210) to 10.4 (64). The first term was a scrappy affair with both sides overcome by the occasion. New Norfolk settled first but kicked inaccurately and scrapped their way to a 17 point lead at the first change. The second term saw New Norfolk start to get on top but they wasted scoring opportunities by kicking too many points.

The third term saw the game open up as the Eagles piled on 10 goals and continued to dominate the last term with a further 12 goals as Fevola put on a clinic with 13 goals after the main break to thrill the 5000-strong crowd. Best player for the Eagles was Fevola who had a day out with 18 goals and was unstoppable up forward. He received very good supply from Barwick, Joseph and Wardlaw as they warmed up for this weekend's top of the table clash with Lindisfarne. Better players for Huonville were hard to find with Watson, Johns and Causon their best whilst Bennett kicked three valuable goals.

Brighton v Central Hawks
BRIGHTON recorded their fifth win of the season and moved to fourth on the ladder when they defeated a very brave Central Hawks by 23 points, 17.8 (110) to 13.9 (87). The first term saw the home side start quickly and they looked in total control kicking six goals and raced to a handy 18 point lead and a big win looked ominous. The second term saw the Hawks start to slow the game and they frustrated the opposition and kicked three goals to keep the margin to 19 points and they were well in the game.

The Robins started to move away in the third term and looked likely to record a big win but the Hawks never gave up, kicking five goals in the last term to finish stronger and gain some confidence for coming weeks. Best players for the Robins were Delaney with six goals along with Smith, Wall and Conolon. Better players for a valiant Hawks were N. Daly, McWilliams, Brown and C. Daly who was dangerous up forward with six goals.

Dodges Ferry v Claremont
DODGES Ferry showed their continued improvement and moved up to third on the ladder when they thrashed previous giant killers Claremont at home by 76 points, 18.19 (127) to 10.13 (73). The Sharks really flew out of the sheds and took full control of the first term and dominated the clearances but poor kicking for goal cost them a much bigger lead than 19 points as the Magpies hung in there with three valuable goals. The second term saw continued domination by Dodges Ferry but again they wasted scoring opportunities and increased their lead to 35 points and had the game in hand but needed to continue the pressure as the Magpies could not fire a shot with only three goals.

The second half saw a more accurate home side as Claremont were totally outclassed. Dodges Ferry really showed they can match the top sides whilst the Magpies failed badly when they had pressure applied. Best players for a very disappointing Claremont were Bedford, Fewkes, Smith and Barwick as they drop to sixth on the ladder.

Kingborough v Cygnet
KINGBOROUGH returned to its best form and cemented a position in the top six when they thrashed a disappointing Cygnet by 109 points, kicking 24.14 (158) to 7.7 (49). The game was all over at half time as Kingborough lead by 63 points in a triumphant return to their best form.

Sorell v East Coast Bombers
SORELL recorded their second win of the season and bounced back from a thrashing last week when they defeated East Coast at home by 13 points, 13.8 (86) to 10.13 (73).

IT was a massive day at Boyer Oval in New Norfolk today, with a huge crowd of about 5000 in attendance to see superstar recruit Brendan Fevola make his one-off appearance with the Eagles, bagging 18 goals and six points in a huge victory over Huonville. A great day for the New Norfolk District Football Club including a new club record for the most goals kicked in one match (previously 14).

During publicity appearances in New Norfolk this morning, Fevola met a local woman who had his autograph tattooed on her arm. A photo was taken (above) and Fevola soon sent it out via Twitter. At the end of the day he tweeted: "Great day out".

Hosts Wade Gleeson and Ben Shaw interviewed Brendan Fevola this afternoon and will broadcast the highlights from 8am tomorrow (Saturday) on 98.9FM. Also on the show are NNDFC vice president Chris Lovell and Darrell Baldock Medallist medallist Jason Wilton.

New Norfolk v Huonville
NEW Norfolk is back at home tomorrow and should be confident of another victory when they host Huonville who have steadily improved in recent weeks. The Eagles were big winners over Sorell last weekend but are in need of a challenge, and winning so easily will not help them against the better sides in coming weeks.

The Lions really improved last weekend and were unlucky not to defeat Dodges Ferry but this is a lot harder task and they really need to start the game well and put some scoreboard pressure on the free scoring opposition. They also need to block up the Eagles forward line and try to stop their dominance of the stoppages and centre clearances. If they lose in this area then the powerful Eagles will score heavily and very quickly.

New Norfolk do not lack hunger and will go for the kill early in the game and not allow the visitors any momentum of confidence especially away from home. The Lions may give some cheek early but the Eagles will be far too strong and have too much scoring power to record another easy victory at home.

Brighton v Central Hawks
BRIGHTON are back at home and will be confident of recording an easy victory against the bottom placed Central Hawks who have struggled in recent weeks and really need an inspired performance. The Robins had a scare last week against East Coast and this should remind them to be more consistent and keep their concentration for the entire match if they are to threaten the top sides. The Hawks were soundly beaten away from home by Cygnet and really need to attempt to start a lot better and get into the game early to gain some much needed confidence and team spirit.

Brighton usually play very well at home and if they can take over the midfield battle, win the clearances and run the ball through the corridors then their key forwards will be in for a big day. The opposition need to slow the game down and try and play a loose man in defence and really use the wide open wings on the ground if they are to attempt to control the play. Brighton will be far too strong and have too much goal scoring ability with several key forwards and should make this a percentage boosting victory and remain firmly in the top six.

Dodges Ferry v Claremont
DODGES Ferry are back at home and will be looking to stay in touch with the top two sides as they host the most improved side in the competition in Claremont in what should be a really close affair. The Sharks have been in great form in recent weeks but received a real scare last week away from home against Huonville and will need to start the game better and play a lot more consistent football. They love playing at home and this usually brings out the best in them and a good start will help their cause and silence the visiting side. The Magpies will be fresh from the bye and the week before that they beat Kingborough at home. That was the big scalp they needed to give them the self-belief they can take the next step as they have only lost two games this season.

The midfield battle will be crucial and both sides have plenty of talent in this area with the Magpies probably a lot stronger at the contest while the Sharks having more running power. If Dodges Ferry can open up the game and create the loose man then they will be hard to hold out but if it is a real scrap then this will suit Claremont. In a game that could go either way, perhaps the Sharks with a vocal home crowd should take the points but will have to be at their best against a well coached and confident side.

Kingborough v Cygnet
Kingborough are back at home and will be looking to rebound and get back into form as they have a real fight to stay in the top six. They host an in-form and confident Cygnet who will knock them out of the top six if they win the game. You would expect the Tigers to really lift under pressure especially at home but will have to be at their best. An in-form and much improved Cygnet would love to knock them out of the top six after several beatings in previous seasons. This is the game they need to win.

Sorell v East Coast Bombers
SORELL are back at home and should lift for a big chance to win their second game of the season but their opposition East Coast will also be viewing this game as a change to record their third win of the season. Sorell should be in the game for a long time but the Bombers have a little too much class and experienced players and this should see them take the points in what should be a close game. Let’s hope the home side lifts its work rate and puts on a good performance for their supporters.

Fev fever on the rise

AFTER several ups and downs, AFL superstar Brendan Fevola has cleared the final hurdle and is free to play for New Norfolk in its home game against Huonville this weekend. The match has received national media coverage over several months, including a mention on Channel Nine/WIN Television's Footy Show, when a poster by Katie Hepper Design was displayed by Sam Newman (left).

The Fev fiesta starts on Friday afternoon with a junior footy clinic hosted by the New Norfolk Junior Football Club. At this event Fevola will be assisted by senior New Norfolk players, Glenorchy development coach Ben Beams and Glenorchy senior players. The clinic will be at Boyer Oval this Friday from 2-4pm. Entry is free and there is no need to register - just turn up on the day. For more information phone 0439 522 796. The Fev poster seen on TV and around New Norfolk will be available at the clinic for $5 and will be a great item to have signed as a keepsake.

Fonda night at the film club

THE Derwent Valley Film Society will screen the 1957 classic 12 Angry Men at its next meeting this Saturday at 7.30pm in the St Mathews Church Hall in New Norfolk. The cast includes a number of high-profile actors, such as Henry Fonda and Jack Klugman, directed by the prolific Sidney Lumet, who was also responsible for Dog Day Afternoon, Network, Equus and a host of other films. 12 Angry Men was his first feature film. New Norfolk v Sorell
NEW Norfolk continue to record easy wins with another big score as they thrashed a lacklustre Sorell by a massive 189 points at Boyer on Saturday, kicking 355.19 (229) to 6.5 (41). The first term saw the visitors surprisingly competitive and only two late goals from the Eagles saw them grab a 12 point lead. Sorell looked well into the contest. The second term saw New Norfolk really increase the pressure and they took over the centre clearances and stoppages. Sorell had no answer for New Norfolk’s power as they kicked 11 unanswered goals and raced away to a match winning lead of 86 points at the main break, Sorell giving in too easily after a good first term.

The second half was a training drill for the powerful Eagles who are still very hungry and know how to really demolish a side. They recorded another 19 goals in the second half to power away to a percentage boosting victory. New Norfolk will be striving for  a real contest in the coming weeks as these easy wins are no good  for when they play a top side. Best players for the winners were plenty with Bonnitcha, Clifford with five goals, Crane and Rapera, with big forward Thompson kicking double figures two weeks in a row with a lazy eleven goals as his red hot form continues. Sorell were best served by Wiltshire, Parker, Mather and Williamson as they still remain with only one win and always struggle badly on the road.

Cygnet v Central Hawks
CYGNET recorded its second win in a row and are really striving to make the top six having thrashed a listless Central Hawks by 89 points, 23.11 (149) to 6.5 (41). The first term saw the visitors really competitive for most of the quarter but they made skill errors and the Port made them pay on the turnovers, kicking late goals to move to a very handy 25-point lead at the first change. The second term saw Cygnet really start to run the ball through the corridor and the Hawks could not match their run and carry as they piled on eight goals and went to a match winning lead of 57 points and looked in for a very big win against the bottom side.

The second half still saw the Port dominate the game but they slowed up badly and allowed the visitors to kick valuable goals as coach Tyrell would not have been pleased with their finish as they need to really bury these sides when in total control at half time. Best players for the Hawks were hard to find with McWilliams, Brown and Nibbs the standouts.

East Coast v Brighton
BRIGHTON remain in the top six and had a real battle on their hands but eventually prevailed away from home over a gallant East Coast, 13.10 (88) to 11.12 (78). The Robins really flew out of the blocks as they controlled all the play in the first term and piled on seven goals and looked to have the game sewn up at quarter time with a lead of 35 points. After a real blast from coach Wiggins at quarter time the Bombers responded as good sides should and the game really changed as they were able to kick six goals to one and only trailed by six points at the main break and the game was up for grabs. The game really closed up in the third term as Brighton started to lift and kicked a few crucial goals and grabbed a handy 12-point lead at the last change and held on for a gutsy win over an unlucky East Coast who wasted opportunities and probably just lacked some experienced in the tight contest. Brighton had a really even team effort which is needed to win these danger games away from home.

Lindisfarne v Kingborough
LINDISFARNE kept its unbeaten run intact and remains a game clear on top of the ladder and the team to beat for this year’s flag after they absorbed pressure all day and still came out on top over a gallant Kingborough by 28 points, 14.10 (94) to 9.12 (66).

Huonville  v Dodges Ferry
DODGES Ferry survived a real scare away from home against a fired up Huonville but came from behind to finally take the points by 10 points, 12.10 (82) to 11.6 (72).

Morphing in to Willow Court

THE federation-era nurses' home at Willow Court is one of the gems of the historic site. Built in two stages in 1913 and 1927, the buildings have been in private ownership for several years and have benefited from ongoing restoration by owner Hayden Pearce. The buildings have been host to the New Norfolk OASIS Men's Shed and several artisans, and now there are several retail units and the prospect of more to come.

Already trading are Patchwork in the Willows, a spinoff from the popular nearby Patchwork Cafe (Facebook page here), and Touch of Earth (Gumtree page here), soon to be followed by Morf Antiques (Facebook page) who are branching out from their existing Circle St premises.

The owners of this section of Willow Court operate Willow Court Antiques and the Willow Court Motel and their other tenants include the Olive Tree Restaurant. They have established a new blog and Facebook page to promote the various activities on the site.

Weather on farmers' agenda

Mt Koonya radar

DERWENT Valley farmers were given a briefing on the Bureau of Meteorology's new radar system late last week. The new Hobart radar at Mt Koonya is said to give excellent coverage to residents and farmers in the Derwent Valley and will be able to see rain systems, cold fronts and storms approaching the area.

The new doppler radar has a higher resolution than the previous radar at Hobart Airport, providing data that allows forecasters and the community to see, in greater detail, upcoming weather including thunderstorms and strong winds. It will also help improve forecasts for the region by providing forecasters with additional information on rainfall from thunderstorms to cold fronts that can move towards the populated southeast from the west at any time of the year. These improvements include:

• continuous 24/7 weather radar coverage for southern Tasmania via the Bureau's website
• better estimates of rainfall rates for use in flood warnings
• better detection of clear air boundaries which are vital for groups like bushfire management agencies and the aviation industry.

Those at last week's briefing at the Carinya Education Park in Blair St heard that the new radar is particularly useful for:

• farmers who would like to check on remote paddocks or areas off farm where rainfall is crucial
• primary producers concerned about weather effects on crops and stock
• bushwalkers who would like to see forecasted cold fronts
• fishermen and women who need to know the forecast weather conditions.

THE latest addition to New Norfolk's thriving antiques sector has thrown open its doors today. Aunt Irma's Antiquities, at 4 Charles St, is operated by Paulis Verstappen and Jarod Parker who stock all kinds of wares and aim to be more than just another antique shop.

The business will be open from 9.30am-5pm seven days a week, including public holidays. Eftpos and delivery are available. There is also a website at auntirmasantquities.com.au

Llewellyn committee meets

THE new Willow Court Conservation Committee had held its first meeting and would soon call for community representation, general manager Stephen Mackey told a Derwent Valley Council workshop on Thursday night. Mr Mackey said the main business of the informal gathering had been to consider terms of reference for the new committee. The committee is expected to be formally established at the council's June meeting.

Those at the initial committee meeting were Mr Llewellyn, mayor Martyn Evans, state government representative Michelle Moseley and architect Paul Lan. Also in attendance was the chairman of the Tasmanian Heritage Council, Dianne Snowden.

Mr Mackey said Mr Llewellyn would soon be asking the Friends of Frescati Committee and the Willow Court and Barracks Working Group to each put forward three nominations for potential community representatives on his committee.

New Norfolk v Sorell
THE in-form New Norfolk are back at home this weekend and should record a comfortable win over a struggling Sorell who have trouble kicking a big enough score to win games of football. New Norfolk were big winners away from home over East Coast and are a better side at home. They don’t back off when they play sides lower on the ladder, which spells trouble for the opposition. Sorell were thrashed last weekend away from home and need to address their road form and slow starts otherwise the strong home side could blow them away in the first term. Sorell need to chip and run the ball and keep it out wide and don’t make any unforced skill errors otherwise New Norfolk will really hurt them on the rebound.

Sorell must keep the ball wide and not bomb it long in the air as New Norfolk are far too tall for them and will take strong marks. New Norfolk have a formidable forward line and if they win the midfield battle then they will score heavily as the have too much firepower for an undermanned opposition. The Eagles will be far too dominant at home and should be too tall and strong for Sorell and will record another percentage boosting win as they are probably striving for a real hard contest after easy wins in recent weeks.

Cygnet v Central Hawks
CYGNET remains at home again this weekend and will be determined to record another win which should nearly see them break into the top six as they host the struggling Central Hawks who are yet to win a game.  The Hawks have struggled for most of the season and are very undermanned, especially when they travel but this could be a winnable game if they start well and gain some momentum. The Port will have too much class and goal scoring ability and should record a comfortable win at home and gain some more confidence for some tough games in the coming weeks.

East Coast v Brighton
EAST Coast are back at home and will be searching for their third win of the season but face an in-form and refreshed Brighton in what should be an interesting contest. East Coast were thrashed by New Norfolk last weekend and must ensure they get off to a good start this weekend. Brighton had the bye last week and previously their form has been very good but they need to play more consistent football for longer periods.

The Robins have plenty of strong marking forwards and if they take over the stoppages and win the contested football then they will score heavily, especially if the Bombers make skill errors and turn the ball over. East Coast need to slow the game down early in the contest and not allow the opposition to create the loose man and run the ball through the corridor. The Bombers may fancy themselves for an upset victory but Brighton should have too much skill and scoring ability and take the points, remaining in touch with the top sides of the competition.

Lindisfarne v Kingborough
THE undefeated Lindisfarne are back at home and face their biggest test so far this season when they host last year’s premiers Kingborough who are badly out of form and need a big lift if they are to take the points. In a game that could go either way, perhaps this may be the challenge Kingborough are looking for and they may sneak over the line but will have to be at their best to defeat the much improved Lindisfarne.

Huonville  v Dodges Ferry
HUONVILLE remains at home for the second week but face a massive task to win their second game of the season when they host the in-form Dodges Ferry who are really confident after good wins in recent weeks. You would expect the home side to give plenty of cheek for most of the day but the class and run of the Sharks should see them pull away in the second half and record their fourth win of the season.

Emporium to buck the trend

A peek inside the shop last week

A NEW shop opening in New Norfolk next week will buck the trend of recent closures and downsizing in the town's central business district. Jim and Ally Elliott have bought the old Cooper's Hardware building at 55-59 High St and will re-open it as Ally's Emporium. The business was to have opened this Friday but it is now expected to throw open its doors on the Queen's Birthday Holiday this Monday, June 11.

Mr and Mrs Elliott and a large group of friends have spent six weeks completely renovating the old hardware store which had been on the market for about two years and was most recently home to a clearance outlet run by Miller's Fashion. The large store of about 300 square metres is now fully carpeted and a new ceiling has been installed. Wiring and cabling has been completely renewed and the premises have been painted out in no less than a dozen colours.

Ally's Emporium will have a little bit of everything, from clothing and jewelry to confectionery and furniture. There will be a mix of men's, women's and children's clothing, Mrs Elliott said it was her intention to have a constantly changing range of stock at realistic prices that would have customers coming back to browse on a regular basis. Many of the items will have an asian or african influence.

The premises will also be the office of True Blue Real Estate, with an internal office built towards the front of the store for this purpose.  The opening hours will be 9am-5pm on weekdays, 10am-4pm on Saturdays and 10am-3pm on Sundays.

Also opening is Aunt Irma's Antiquities, just around the corner at 4 Charles St where Jarod Parker, Paulis Verstappen and Aunt Irma have a range of furniture from the Georgian, Victorian and Depression eras, along with trinkets and curios, jewellery, secondhand streetware and more. The opening of both businesses, and the relocation of True Blue Real Estate to High St, will provide a much needed boost to the business district and all involved are to be congratulated on their expression of confidence in the town.

East Coast v New Norfolk
NEW Norfolk travelled to Triabunna but had no trouble away from home and continued their recent rich form when they thrashed a disappointing East Coast by 125 points, 28.17 (185) to 9.6 (60). The Eagles were never going to let the home side into the game as they slammed on seven unanswered goals in the first term to blow away their opponents and moved to a match winning lead of 44 points at the first change. The second term was a real surprise as the Bombers really played attacking football and after a scoreless first term they kicked six goals to reduce the gap to 39 points at half time and it appeared we may have a competitive game on our hands.

The third term saw New Norfolk respond as good sides always do in piling on nine gaols to kill off the game and finished off with a further eight majors as the Bombers’ disappointing second half showed how far away there a are from the top sides this season. Best players for the Eagles were plenty with Thompson unstoppable up forward with 12 goals and he was well supported by Barwick with four majors along with Belcher and Papera. Better players for the Bombers were hard to find with Lyden, Rae and Arnold their best, with Lemm scoring four gaols.

Central Hawks v Dodges Ferry
DODGES Ferry continued its good recent form and had no fears travelling to Oatlands thrashing an out of form Central Hawks by 118 points, 23.18 (156) to 6.2 (38). The first term saw the visitors really come out of the sheds full of running. They did not give the home side a chance to settle and held them scoreless while kicking five goals as they cruised to a very handy 35 point lead at the first change. The second term was the same affair. The Hawks managed one goal but Dodges Ferry’s defence was rock solid as they continually forced the ball forward and fully deserved their match winning lead of 66 points at half time. The second half was again all the Sharks. The Hawks did manage to kick five goals in an improved display, but they were totally outclassed by a very good opposition. Best players for the Hawks were Matthews, Horne, Braynt and Gibbs.

Claremont v Kingborough
CLAREMONT showed they have really improved this season and finally grabbed a big scalp by defeating last year’s premiers, Kingborough, by 16 points at home in a major upset. Scores were 14.13 (97) to 12.9 (81). The first term was a tight affair and you could sense the Magpies were up for it as they contested every stoppage and restricted the Tigers’ lead to a solidary point. Kingborough piled on four goals to two in the second term and looked to be taking control. The third term was a real surprise as Claremont kicked a couple of quick goals and really had their confidence up and finished the term with seven goals and they grabbed a 19 point lead at the last change. They held that lead throughout the last term for easily their best win for the season.

Cygnet v Sorell
CYGNET stayed in touch with the top six and celebrated Greg Gordon’s tribute day in fine style, thrashing a listless Sorell by 65 points, 13.13 (91) to 3.8 (26).

Huonville v Lindisfarne
LINDISFARNE kept its unbeaten run intact, recording a comfortable win of 34 points over an improving Huonville with scores of 12.8 (80) to 6.10 (46).

With the Under 15s A and B divisisons now playing each other over five rounds (Round 1 cancelled) New Norfolk travelled to Glenorchy and was given a football lesson by a more determined and polished Glenorchy outfit. The Eagles played some good football in patches, but were out-played in each of the four quarters. Jakob Triffitt and Jacob Picken gave their all for the Eagles with strong marking and kicking around the big KGV Oval. Bradley Chaplin was his usual best down back, as were Brett Hodge and Ryan Wakefield.

Coach Josh Clifford praised the backline for their efforts. Mentions must go to Zak Booth who gives away plenty in height, but nothing in determination and this showed when he chased down three Glenorchy opponents and then came away with the footy. Daniel Browning showed climpses of the good footy he is capable off. In the end the young Eagles went down by 71 points. This is the team’s first loss this season. In Round 9 on June 24 New Norfolk Under 15s have the bye. 

UNDER 16: New Norfolk 10.10 (70) d North Hobart 10.8 (68) at Tynwald Park.  Goals - NN: Brad Ransley 3, Josh Rowlands 2, Jacob Daley, Jordan Hayden, Brandon King, Blaise Reed, James Webb; Best: Aidan Pearton, Daniel Coppleman, Jordan Hayden, Tyron Rainbird, Tyler Purdon, Brad Ransley.

New Norfolk Under 16s had a great win over the previously unbeaten North Hobart on Sunday at Tynwald Park.  The Demons started with guns blazing in the first half but the Eagles came back and hit the front going into the last change. The boys responded well to coach Dean King at half time where he demanded that they keep on applying pressure and the hard work would pay off.

With a solid defence led by Daniel Coppleman and hard work from Jordan Hayden and company in the midfield it was then finished off with great goals from Brad Ransley, Brandon King and Tyron Rainbird in an exciting last quarter. The boys all played a great game and look forward to their next challenge in playing Huonville at Boyer at noon on June 17 after the school holiday break.

AN enthusiastic crowd braved threatening weather conditions last Sunday to meet two of the stars of WIN Television's The Block when they visited Williams Mitre 10 in High St from 10-11.30am. Newlyweds Sophie and Dale Vine are one of four couples contesting this year's series of The Block.

There was a question and answer session, prizes to be won, and a chance for photos and autographs. A sausage sizzle was provided by the Molesworth Cricket Club which is celebrating its centenary this year.

EAST Coast are back at home and looking to move into the top six but face a huge task when they take on the in form New Norfolk who have been scoring heavily in recent weeks. With their key playmakers in full flight New Norfolk are a very dangerous combination, especially as they are back to their hungry best. The Bombers were solid last weekend, being defeated by Lindisfarne away from home, but still have lapses in their games and if they fail to maintain the pressure on New Norfolk then they will be scored heavily against.

East Coast need to get their match ups spot on and stop the Eagles from creating the loose man and using the corridor to run the ball through and give their key forwards space to lead into. New Norfolk will be looking to get off to a good start and not allow the home side any momentum or confidence early in the game. You would expect the Bombers to be fairly competitive at home but the strength and class of New Norfolk should see them record a comfortable victory and keep up their quest for top spot on the ladder.

CENTRAL Hawks are back at home on their Oatlands ground and will be looking to record their first win of the season but face a huge task against Dodges Ferry who have been in good form in recent weeks and would be confident of victory. The Hawks were soundly beaten away from home last weekend against Kingborough. After a good start they fell away badly and will need to play more consistent football over the four quarters if they are to cause an upset victory. The Sharks drew last week at home against Brighton but kicked poorly for goal which cost them the game after dominating for most of the day and they will need to get off to a good start especially playing away from home.

Dodges Ferry have plenty of fire power up forward and if they can take control of the midfield and create the loose man and run the ball through the corridor then they should score heavily against a struggling defence. The Hawks must play accountable football and attempt to slow the game down and frustrate the opposition but not allowing them any space. The Hawks should give plenty of cheek early in the game but the class and scoring power of the Sharks should see them far too strong and record another victory and keep them in touch with the top sides of the competition.

Claremont v Kingborough
CLAREMONT is back at home and faces a real test of their improvement when they host Kingborough who have yet to hit top form in a game where an upset could occur. The Magpies were brave last week in defeating Sorell away from home but will need to play a lot better and be more consistent if they are to take the points.  Kingborough will be desperate to stay in touch with the top sides and may have a bit too much run and carry for the home side, and should take the points but will need to be at their best against a capable home side if they play at their best.

Cygnet v Sorell
CYGNET will be looking to stay in touch with the top six and will be desperate to put on a good display in front of a packed crowd to honour club legend Greg “Ducky” Gordon. Cygnet will be too emotional and fired up and will not let the crowd or Ducky down on this memorable day and should take the points and record their third win of the season. They must be at their best against an improving Sorell who just lack some big players to make them more competitive.

Huonville v Lindisfarne
HUONVILLE are back at home and fresh from the bye and will be looking to record their second win of the season but face a massive task when they take on the undefeated Lindisfarne. The Blues should be far too strong all over the ground and should record a comfortable win away from home to keep a game clear of their rivals.

UNDER 16s: Clarence 11.6 (72) d New Norfolk 7.10 (52) at Boyer Oval. Goals - NN: Josh Rowlands 3, Daniel Adams 2, Aaron Triffitt, Daniel Coppleman; Best - NN: Brandon King, Daniel Adams, Tyson Gray, Tyron Rainbird, Tyler Purdon, Jacob Daley.

After not losing a game so far this season, the Under 16s went down to a more determined Clarence team on Boyer Oval last Saturday. New Norfolk played well but wasn't quite at its best and missed some set shots for goal that they normally would have kicked. Midfielder Brandon King had a very good game for the young Eagles, setting up many goal opportunities as did Daniel Adams who continues to impress. Josh Rowlands showed he knows were the goals are, booting three majors with Adams also chipping in with two goals. Aidan Pearton took a terrific mark down back which got a good reception from the crowd. In the end Clarence ran out winners by 20 points. With the return of a couple key players the Under 16s will be looking to regain top spot on when they meet ladder leaders North Hobart at Tynwald Park at 1pm on Sunday. Good Luck boys.
