DOCUMENTS produced by Valley Vision to highlight the group's achievements include the information that a state-funded roundabout was due to be completed at a major New Norfolk traffic junction by June 2009.The document titled "Capability Statement" is dated July 2009 and was sent to a local ratepayer on July 14 in response to questions asked of the Derwent Valley Council.
$100,000 was provided last year to the Derwent Valley Council via Valley Vision, for the construction of a roundabout at the busy junction of High and Stephen streets in New Norfolk. The money was provided from the State Government's "Safer Travel Speeds in Shared Urban Spaces" program on a dollar-for-dollar basis with the council.
As our photo shows, there is no roundabout at the junction and no indication of any preparatory work. The New Norfolk News invites Valley Vision's comment on its "magic roundabout".
Merry go round it seems! Just because the incompetent drivers see fit to break the law and cross the single white line while attempting their 'u-turn' at this junction is no real reason for a roundabout to be put there - simple policing would soon put a stop to it. The better place for a much-needed roundabout is the George/Burnett/The Avenue junction. However, it seems actually getting any work done is the problem - look at the state of the streets, High, Burnett, George, Circle - absolutely appalling. Where's the direction and leadership?? Sadly failing it seems.

What a beautiful round about it is! With a bit of imagination you could almost see it. I wonder if it will be as much as a success as the planter boxes?
ReplyDeleteInteresting you should mention the planter boxes Anon as I was told by a member of the "Spatial Committee" that they had actually selected round planter boxes (much more sensible really - if you really had to have them!) but SOMEONE decided in his wisdom that square would be better.
