Round 2 results

IN a very close game at Tynwald Park on Saturday, Molesworth I recorded their second win in as many matches by defeating New Norfolk I by three wickets. Opening batsman Nick Piuselli led the way for Molesworth in their pursuit of New Norfolk's total of 8 for 247 with a well made 74 runs. Piuselli struck 8 fours and 2 sixes during his innings and even a hit to the head from a miss-timed hook shot off the bowling of Josh Rowlands didn't stop him. Brad Coppleman gave great support with 44 runs as did Ben Eyles with 36.

In the dying stages of the game, 15-year-old Daniel Coppleman showed great control with the bat making 24 runs and sharing a 44-run partnership with the big hitting Shannon Long. Coppleman's cool head was just what the team needed and mention must also go to Brad Ransley who held his own in the middle order.

Rohan Heron was the best of the New Norfolk bowlers taking 3 for 46. After winning the toss and batting first New Norfolk gave themselves every change of winning with opener Jake King batting superbly to make a fine 87 with boundaries going to all parts of the ground. Ashely Morgan also batted well, making an excellent 58, but New Norfolk's total wasn't enough. Dean King who is back in the Molesworth team bowled very well with figures of 3 for 18 off six overs.

Molesworth II made it a double for the club, winning their match against Sorell at Boyer Oval. Molesworth had first hit after being sent in, making 8 for 172 off 50 overs. The winning total was put together by the old hands Martyn Evans with a fine 46 which include four well struck boundaries and Ricky Neads who hadn't played for nearly 20 years and made 25 not out as the pair shared a 76-run partnership. Dion Hay 24 and C. Hay also helped build the innings for Molesworth. In reply Sorell got very close, but couldn't finish the job before being bowled out for 165. Dion Hay was the best of the Molesworth bowlers taking 3 for 30 with Martyn Evans also capping off a good day taking 2 for 22. A special mention goes to first-time wicketkeeper Tyson Gray who kept well all day, taking four catches.

They say cricket is a great leveller and this couldn't be truer for Gretna I in their match against Rokeby at Clarendon Vale. After winning by 125 runs last week, Gretna came crashing back to earth, losing by 297 runs. The home side won the toss and elected to bat, posting the massive total of 8 for 365 off their 50 overs. Cameron Emery was the pick of the Gretna bowlers with three wickets. In reply Gretna were never in the hunt, bowled out for 68 with last week's run-maker Damien Hack top scoring with 23. The only other double figures came from Mathew Burns with 12. Gretna's day started badly when captain Ben Rainbird did a hamstring in the field while Brad Prentice injured his knee. Both were unable to bat which made Rokeby's  total all that bit harder to match. On a brighter note, congratulations to Mathew Burns for playing his 200th game for Gretna I.

On Sunday things didn't get any better when Gretna II played Marquis Tigers on the small Lansdowne ground. Gretna won the toss and elected to bat, making the good score of 7 for 221 with captain Todd Jarvis top-scoring with a well-made 38. In reply the Tigers were in trouble at 4 for 25, but a mammoth partnership of 179 got them back on track, reaching Gretna's total in the 36th over with D. Donnelly making 157 not out for the home team. Veteran Bruce Emery was the best of the Gretna's bowlers taking 4 for 13 off 10 overs. It wasnt a good day for Gretna's Sam Kirkwood who was literally hit for six when he was hit for 37 in one over by D. Donnelly scorting 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, a wide and another 6. His figures ended at 0-57 off two overs.

Knights comfortably defeated Bushy Park at Cosgrove. The Knights won the toss and sent Bushy into bat, making 155 off 42.5 overs. Openers Shaun and Nick Fenton got their team of to a good start with an opening stand of 48. Danny Mason top scored with 53 and put on a good stand of 44 with Dylan Grant, but things fell away from here with Bushy Park losing their last six wickets for 52 runs. In reply the Knights made 4 for 158 off 28.4 overs. Of the bowlers for Bushy Park, G. Crosswell was the main wicket taker with 2 for 24.

New Norfolk II were easily defeated by Lindisfarne at Cambridge Oval on Saturday. New Norfolk were sent into bat making the small total of 80 with Jamie Hill top scoring with 26. In reply Lindisfarne lost four wickets in the run chase with Josh Walsh snaring two wickets to be the best of the New Norfolk bowlers.

NEARLY $500 was raised for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation at the New Norfolk Guardian Pharmacy's saveloy day recently. All bread was donated by the Top of the Town Bakery and Norske Skog Boyer's Vision Team purchased the saveloys.

Maydena hub reopening soon

THE Maydena Adventure Hub will emerge from its winter closure in the near future. Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans has been advised that the hub will reopen early next month, providing a cafe and petrol station service to the town as well as tourists.

Situated on Kallista Rd, the hub has been leased to a private operator who will open the business seven days a week from 8am-4pm. There is a possibility evening meals may be offered on Fridays and Saturdays.

As before the hub will continue to manage bookings for the Rail Track Rider and cater for the Top of the World tour, which will continue as per normal schedule. www.adventureforests.com.au

Chickenfeed flies the coop

New Norfolk Chickenfeed, now closed

THE doors have closed at New Norfolk's Chickenfeed bargain store for the last time. The business closed on Wednesday, the latest victim of the discount retailer's struggle for survival. The firm's parent company, Retail Adventures, went into voluntary administration yesterday. Some 20 Chickenfeed shops have closed in recent months.

Originally called Chickenfeed Liquidators, the New Norfolk branch was the state's 14th Chickenfeed outlet when it opened in April 1992. It quickly became one of the busiest shops in the town, which led to extensions at the rear of the store to double the floorspace. There was a further expansion in 2002 when Chickenfeed expanded into vacant premises next door, adding a further 25% to the floorspace. At that time Chickenfeed founder Rudi Sypkes said the New Norfolk shop had been a "very viable business" since day one.

A sign in the the window of the now-closed shop thanks the community for its support of the business over the last 20 years. Thanks to all the staff who have served the community over that period.

THE Derwent Valley Autumn Festival was named the winner of the events and tourism category in the 2012 Community Achievement Awards last weekend. The committee was well represented at the awards dinner at the Hotel Grand Chancellor on Hobart on Saturday night. There were 250 guests from across the state, hosted by Peter Murphy from Southern Cross Television.

"These awards recognise community commitment and contribution and we congratulate the Dewent Valley Autumn Festival, and all of the nominees for their achievements," said Stephen Pratt, general manager of award sponsor Prime Super. The prize included a trophy, certificate, $1000 Commonwealth Bank account or an advertising package from Southern Cross Television. The award was accepted by festival chairman Nick Cracknell.

The festival's award nomination said there had been an estimated 18,000 visitors at this year's festival at New Norfolk. The volunteer committee worked endless hours to ensure that the festival had something for the whole family to enjoy. Interactive games for children, animals, food and wine, crafts and music showcased what is available in the Valley. Free entry is made possible due to naming rights sponsorship and Council, community group and local business support for the event.

The Carinya Education Park, operated by the Derwent Valley Council at the former Derwent Valley Business Enterprise Centre, was a semi-finalist in the community of the year category of the Community Achievement Awards following a nomination submitted by the council's regional development officer. A certificate for this achievement was accepted by Councillor Judy Bromfield, general manager Stephen Mackey, youth participation officer Matthew Hill and regional development officer Jess Dallas.

The certificates can be seen on the front counter of the Derwent Valley Council Chambers in New Norfolk.

2nd Grade: Gretna I started its season with an excellent 125-run win over New Norfolk I at Gretna on Sunday. After playing just the five matches in the past four seasons, Gretna I opener Damian Hack equalled his top score, batting superbly right through the full 50 overs to make 94 runs not out. Hack hasn't played a full season since 2007-08. He showed great patience, finding all the gaps around the ground in what was one of the best returns to cricket seen in some time. Hack was well supported by keeper Glenn Blackwell with 38 runs and captain Ben Rainbird with 26.

Gretna finished 8 for 240 off 50 overs (29 extras). Of the New Norfolk bowlers, Ashley Morgan did well taking two wickets as did Rohan Heron. In reply New Norfolk made 10 for 115 off 33.1 overs (14 extras). Rohan Heron batted well for the Red Caps making 37 runs while Stewart Rice chipped in with 23. The Gretna bowlers gave very little away in a great display of bowling with Aaron Maddox leading the way and taking three top-order wickets.

While on 91 Hack collided heavly with team-mate Aaron Maddox while going for a run. Maddox got to his feet and made it to the crease, but Hack was just about out cold in the middle of the pitch. When helped to his feet he regained his composure and batted out the remaining two overs. Great sportsmanship was shown by the New Norfolk team who could of easily ran Damien out, but instead came to assistance, a real credit to you all, well done. Congratulatons to Gretna Club game milestones - Mathew Burns 300th and Corey Ransley 100th. 

In the other 2nd Grade match Molesworth I easily defeated Montagu Bay Sharks at Boyer Oval on Sunday. In a match that was reduced to 44 overs due to rain, the Sharks won the toss and elected to bat, making 9 for 146 off the 44 overs (10 extras). Nathan Eiszele picked up 3 wickets, while M. Siely and Ricky Martin took two each to be the major wicket takers. In reply Molesworth lost just the one wicket in chasing down the Sharks total, finishing 1 for 150 off 27 overs (36 extras). After losing the early wicket of Nick Piuselli with just 14 runs on the board, Molesworth then turned up the heat with captain Ricky Martin making 93, well supported by Siely who made 34. 4th Grade: Gretna II had a great first up win defeating Derwent at Gretna on Saturday. The home side won the toss and elected to bat, hitting up the great score of 8 for 236 off their allotted 50 overs (24 extras). Gretna openers Brad Prentice (25 runs) and Nathan Wakefield (28 runs) got their side off to a great start, putting on 41 together. Next in Jackson Ackerly made a superb half-century to give his side a great foundation for big score. Veteran Brian Smith did his usal bit before being well caught, making 33. In reply Derwent was bowled out for 142 in 37.5 overs (26 extras). Young Josh Bomford impressed early, snaring 5 for 21 to be the best of the Gretna bowlers. Captain Todd Jarvis was next best taking two wickets. Gretna II batting: Jackson Ackerly 52, Brian Smith 33, Nathan Wakefield 28, Brad Prentice 25, Todd Jarvis 21, Adam Browning 14, Jordan Hastie 13, Ben Shaw 11, Sam Kirkwood 9 not out. In the match between Bushy Park and DOSA at Shoobridge Park, DOSA won by 18 runs. The highlight of this match was the magnificent bowling of young Trent Grant who took a hat trick. Trent finished with the rare figures of 4 for 3 off 1.4 overs.  Bushy Park won the toss and sent DOSA into bat, making the small score of 10 for 118 off 25.4 overs (14 extras). In reply Bushy Park made 10 for 100 off 26 overs (10 extras). Captain and opener Shaun Fenton hit up a well made 50 but had little support with just one other making double figures, Trent Grant 16no who batted well with Aaron Dawes. The pair putting on 21 for the last wicket. Bushy Park bowling: Trent Grant 4 for 3 (1.4 overs), Mitchell Crosswell 2 for 15 (5 overs), nathan Grant 2 for 37 (8 overs), Nick Fenton 1 for 4 (3 overs). DOSA opening bowler S. Beswick took 7 for 30 off 10 overs!  

5th Grade: Molesworth II lost its first match, going down to Lindisfarne by eight wickets at Boyer Oval on Saturday. Molesworth won the toss and elected to bat, making 10 for 137 off 43 overs (30 extras). Paul Reed and Cody Neads did well, putting on 42 for the opening partnership. But things slipped away from here until S. Evans put up a fight with a well made 38. In reply Lindisfarne had little trouble chasing down the score, finishing 2 for 138 off 36.1 overs (45 extras). Molesworth II batting: S. Evans 38, Paul Reed 18, Cody Needs 18, D. Smith 10no. Molesworth II bowling: M. Murray 2 for 27 (5 overs).

New Norfolk II hosted Old Beach at Tynwald Park on Saturday. Old Beach won the toss and elected to bat, making a modest score of 10 for 173 off 39.5 overs (19 extras). Jamie Hill and Jake Wessing were the pick of the Red Caps bowlers, taking three wickets each. In reply New Norfolk struggled to get the score on the board, being bowled out for 54 off 13.2 overs (24 extras). Mark Thurston was the only batsman to make double figures, with 10. Derwent paying dividends

STUART Harwood and the 4.3kg trout he caught last month are the front page item on this month's New Norfolk Angler, the newsletter of the New Norfolk Licensed Anglers Association. The newsletter reports that the River Derwent has been providing some fantastic fishing this season with no less than four large trout caught in the same week in mid-September, all topping the 4kg mark.

Stuart Harwood caught his superb 9lb 8oz sea-run trout at New Norfolk late one night while Matt Sherriff from the north of the state stopped off for a quick fish and hooked a searunner of a similar wight on his second cast. "If anyone wants to dispute the Derwent as the state’s best trout fishery early season, they better put forward a pretty good argument," editor Justin Causby said.

Scout hall makeover

New Norfolk scouts with their cheque for the scout hall repairs

THE New Norfolk Scout Group has received a Commonwealth Bank community grant of $8400 to fund a facelift for their hall in Derwent Terrace. The scouts received a giant cheque from New Norfolk branch manager Kelly Shaw on October 10.

The grant will be used to give the scout hall a renovation and makeover.  In the grant submission it was highlighted that there were several areas in need of urgent attention. The carpets are worn and torn, there are holes in the roof and the ceiling is sagging. The walls need painting, the stove no longer works and the vacuum cleaner has reached the end of its life. The hall was built in 1998 and has no doubt been given a thorough workout by cubs and scouts in the intervening years.

The Commonwealth Bank grant will be used to cover the necessary repairs, spruce up the hall and purchase a new stove and vacuum cleaner. This year 244 grants have been awarded to organisations across the country that support the health and wellbeing of children. A total of $2 million was awarded. The program is funded by the Commonwealth Bank Staff Community Fund, with current and retired bank staff contributing from their pay with matching funding by the bank.

Fancy a night on the slab?

THE old Royal Derwent Hospital morgue looks set to become Australia's most unusual bed and breakfast. The mortuary is at the corner of George and Humphrey Sts in the Willow Court section of the old hospital. The 1960s-era building has been closed for more than a decade.

A large section of the Willow Court site is owned by Hadyn Pearce and ABC TV news tonight reported that his latest idea for the property is to offer accommodation in the old morgue. Mr Pearce owns the nearby Willow Court Antiques in what was once O Ward or Olga House, as well as the Willow Court Motel in what was originally M Ward and later Myrtle/Alcheringa House. Mr Pearce also rents rooms to a growing number of businesses in the former Willow Court Nurse's Home. The Patchwork Cafe operates in a historic wooden hall that many people confuse with a chapel, and nearby the old J Ward or Ladies' Cottage is undergoing restoration.

Mr Pearce told the ABC he hopes to have his new accommodation venture open for business early in the new year. The news item can be viewed here.

Speedway season preview

THE 2012-13 Tasmanian speedway season promises to be one of the best on record for decades, particularly in the south of the state, where the Mountain Dew Ice Raceway near New Norfolk will host several major events. The southern circuit has been allocated the grand finale of the prestigious National Super Sedan Series in January, which will see Australia’s best V8 super sedan drivers in full flight.

With 16 of the country’s top speedway V8 sedan drivers contracted for the series, plus additional entries, more than 30 adrenaline pumping V8s could line-up for the Hobart round. Tasmanian interest will be high with current series champion Brad Smith, from Devonport, defending his title, and Hobart’s own Steve Latham, a former state champion, one of the 16 contracted drivers who will contest the 10-round series.

The Hobart grand finale will be held on Saturday night, January 26, following the Carrick round on the previous night. In addition, the weekend will be a mega one for local speedway fans, as racing will also continue on the Sunday night (January 27) with Tasmania’s longest-running speedway feature race, the Mountain Dew Ice Grand National. A number of national series drivers and other mainland contenders are expected to stay over for the event, with the success of last year’s Grand National also playing a part in Hobart gaining the national series final this season.

The Hobart and Latrobe circuits will also join forces earlier in January to present the CJD Equipment Monster Truck Spectacular at Hobart on January 12 and Latrobe on January 19, providing a perfect lead-in to the major V8 super sedan events in the weeks to follow.

Junior cricket looking good

WITH six junior teams taking to the field this season, the future of cricket is looking bright in the Derwent Valley. Molesworth has two Under 13 teams and one Under 15 side; Gretna has one Under 13 team and one Under 15 side; and New Norfolk has one team of Under 13s. All these junior teams play in the Cricket Tasmania Youth league.

Meanwhile, Milo Cricket for players aged 5-10 years is on again at two venues in the Derwent Valley.

• Glenora District High School: Every Friday for eight weeks, 4 -5pm. If you wish to go along just turn up on the day or contact co-ordinator Annie McKenzie at the Glenora school on 6286 1301. Gretna Cricket Club players are helping out with this program each week.

Cricket clubs geared up for new season

WITH the Southern Cricket Association's 2012-13 roster now under way, all Derwent Valley clubs are ready for what is shaping up to be an interesting season. Bushy Park were runners up to Sandford in fourth grade last season and will be looking to go one better this season. Led by captain Shaun Fenton, Bushy Park has picked up Nathan Grant from Risdon Vale, joining his brothers Dylan and Trent. Danny Mason is another new player at the club and will be looking to impress.

Gretna I and II are yet to make the finals since joining the SCA and both teams will be looking to change this. Gretna I is again captained by Ben Rainbird while Todd Jarvis is having his second turn as captain of Gretna II. The club has lost a number of players interstate due to work commitments, but with the inclusions of Jordan Hayden from New Norfolk, Sam Kirkwood from North Hobart and Damien Hack coming out of retirement these guys will certainly cover the losses, including Tim Lowe's retirement.

Molesworth Cricket Club is now coached by Craig Coppleman and will be looking to go one better after losing to Sorell in the grand final last season. The club has lost last season's captain Mark Reggett who has moved interstate and Dean King due to work commitments. On the up side they have regained former player Sean Hay and also an injection of youth in Tyson Gray, Cody Neads and Charlie Stewart.

New Norfolk will be coached by club stalwart Adrian Eiszele this season. New Norfolk I will be captained by Glen Williams. The team made the finals last season and just missed out on a grand final berth, losing to Moleswoth I in the preliminary final. New Norfolk II will be captained by returning player Stephen Nichols. The Red Caps have added 14 new players to their list with David Maddox, Josh Dykes, Jake Wessing, Jon Murray, Trent Mayne, Jye County and Leigh Lewis to name a few. Jordan Hastie has gone to Gretna while John Richards isn't playing.

Mobile office headed our way

THE Federal Government's "mobile office" is visiting towns across Tasmania to provide rural and remote communities with better access to government services.

The Mobile Office will be in Hamilton this Thursday, October 18, and in New Norfolk on Friday. It will be parked at:

• Hamilton Park, River St, Hamilton, from 10am to 3.30pm on Thursday.
• New Norfolk Post Office, High St, New Norfolk, from 9.30am to 4pm on Friday.

The Federal Government's Mobile Office travels Australia to provide a face-to-face service for people living in rural and remote communities. Staff on board are happy to deal with Centrelink, Medicare and Child Support matters including new claims; customer information updates; confirmation of customer documents and supporting information; deal with payment and service options to suit individual circumstances and provide information on how financial matters may impact on Centrelink payments.

Maydena's digital d-day this December

BY the end of next year all free-to-air television services in Australia will be broadcast in digital-only, but the town of Maydena is switching to digital-only free-to-air TV earlier than other parts of Tasmania. Much of the Derwent Valley has had access to digital television broadcasts for several years, but Maydena has been limited to old-style analog transmissions.

Tasmanian television broadcasters are planning to switch Maydena from analog to digital in early December. The community will be informed once a date is confirmed. This early switchover is happening because the Maydena transmitter at Abbotts Lookout is unable to broadcast analog and digital TV at the same time. This means the analog TV signals will be turned off the same day the digital signals are turned on.

After the early switchover Maydena will have access to the full range of digital free-to-air digital channels from national and commercial broadcasters for the first time. This will include digital standard definition (SD) channels from the commercial broadcasters Southern Cross, 7TWO, WIN, GO!, TDT Ten, Eleven. The high definition (HD) channels 7mate, GEM and ONE HD will also be available after the early switchover.

Digital SD channels from the national broadcasters ABC1, ABC2, ABC3, SBS ONE, SBS TWO, and the HD channels ABC News 24 and SBS HD will also be available after the early switchover.

What do you need to do?
To access the new digital services you will need a TV that is capable of receiving digital signals by either:

• connecting a digital set-top-box or digital recorder to an existing analog TV; or
• upgrading to a digital TV which has an in built-in digital tuner.

Some properties may also need to upgrade their antenna systems and cabling, including buildings with shared antenna systems. If you rent your home you should consult your landlord or owners corporation. If you think you might need to upgrade your antenna system you should consult an Australian Government Endorsed Antenna Installer. To find your closest installer enter your full address into the "mySwitch tool" at www.digitalready.gov.au or call the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 201 013. You should ask the installer to point your antenna to the Maydena transmitter site and ensure that it is adjusted for correct polarity (horizontal).

What to expect during the early switchover
Work to upgrade the transmitter will usually begin in the morning. There may be periods during the day where there are no or disrupted TV services. Work should be completed by late afternoon when the new digital TV services should be available. After the upgrade has been completed, you will have to tune your set-top box or digital TV to ensure you are receiving the new digital channels.

Household Assistance Scheme
You may be eligible for the Household Assistance Scheme if you have a working TV, have not yet converted to digital TV and receive the maximum rate of the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Service Pension or Income Support Supplement payment.

The Household Assistance Scheme provides an entire package of assistance and is free to eligible households. Assistance includes the supply and installation of a set-top-box, a demonstration of how to use the equipment, 12 months after care support and equipment warranty and where necessary, antenna and cable upgrades if the resident owns their home. The Department of Human Services has written to eligible people inviting them to opt-in to the Household Assistance Scheme by calling 1800 556 443. If you believe that you or someone you know are eligible for assistance and you have not received a letter, call the Department of Human Services on 1800 556 443.

THIS month's Derwent Valley Council meeting will be held at the Granton Memorial Hall this Thursday night at 6.30pm. A community forum will be held beforehand, starting at 5.45pm, allowing the public to discuss matters of concern with the council in a relatively informal setting.

THE New Norfolk Guardian Pharmacy will raise funds for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation with a "Sav. for Daniel" Day this Friday, October 19. Between 11am and 4pm a gold coin donation will purchase a tasty Clark's Smallgoods saveloy in bread, with the proceeds being presented to foundation that was established in 2005 by Denise and Bruce Morcombe following the tragic abduction and suspected murder of their 13 year old son Daniel in December 2003.

Chickenfeed cuts back

TROUBLED retailer Chickenfeed Bargain Stores has cut the opening hours of its New Norfolk store. Despite recently being listed as one of the company's more profitable locations, the New Norfolk store no longer opens on Sundays.

Chickenfeed has a long lease on the premises at 25-29 High St, which was once three separate shops. The property changed hands earlier this year and the sale price is said to have been in excess of a million dollars. Realcommercial.com.au lists the annual rental as just under $150,000.

Meanwhile, the former GN Electrical premises at 20 High St also changed hands recently and is currently undergoing renovations. No announcement has been made but many believe this will be the new home of Banjo's Bakery. Allhomes.com.au lists the sale price as $405,000.

The former Country Florals florist at 33 High St is now occupied by two small businesses. Geardy's (selling electrical appliances) and Sintonic (re-established following the loss of its original premises in the Banjo's fire earlier this year). Congratulations to the proprietors of these businesses.

Rallying for respect

AN estimated 1000 people took part in yesterday's Rally of Respect at New Norfolk. As well as being a great display of community attitudes to the problem of bullying, the event also generated significant media interest.Among the many marchers was Premier Lara Giddings, who commended the organisers and participants for taking a stand against bullying. Ms Giddings joined a mass of students, Education Minister Nick McKim, two mayors, state politicians councillors and community members in marching against bullying and discrimination.

"This fantastic initiative is made all the more powerful by the fact it has been organised by local students, who are the leaders of tomorrow," Ms Giddings said. "It's great to see young people from all over the Derwent Valley standing up to say loud and clear that bullying and discrimination should not be tolerated. This is a great example that the rest of the community should follow," she said.

Christmas parade plans

IT is less than two months until this year's New Norfolk Christmas Parade at noon on December 8. Event organiser Ngaire Glover said inquiries had already started to come in. The theme will be peace in the world.

The New Norfolk Business Alliance has decided not to continue its Christmas Derwent Dollars Draw this year but a donor has offered to provide prizes for parade participants in a variety of categories.

Important visitors at Boyer

FEDERAL MPs and Premier Lara Giddings were among a group of prominent visitors at Norske Skog's Boyer mill late last week. The visit followed the recent announcement of an investment partnership between the paper manufacturer and the Federal and State governments. In the official party along with the premier were Regional Australia Minister Simon Crean MHR and the Federal Member for Lyons, Dick Adams MHR.The $84 million project, with funding from mill owner Norske Skog ($43 million) and the Federal Government ($28 million) along with a $13 million loan from the State Government, will diversify the 70-year-old mill’s production, creating the capability to produce 140,000 tonnes of magazine-grade coated paper each year.

Mr Crean investment would secure 330 direct jobs, 900 indirect jobs and create a further 100 jobs in the construction phase, as well as ensuring Tasmania’s forestry industry could continue to diversify. “There is broad support for the paper machine conversion at Boyer Mill, which will further diversify production and realign the mill’s output with demand in the Australian paper market,” Mr Crean said. “The ramifications for not supporting this project could have been dire given the mill supports over 1200 jobs and injects $140 million into the local economy each year.

“Norske Skog’s move into coated paper will reduce Australia’s current 100 per cent reliance on imported coated papers, providing security of supply and protection from fluctuations in the Australian dollar for Australian users of coated paper. There will be strict conditions on Australian Government funding to ensure jobs are protected and that the mill can deliver on diversifying and providing a product that will ensure its operation for years to come,” Mr Crean said.

Ms Giddings said the investment partnership was fantastic news for Tasmania and the people of New Norfolk who relied on the operation for jobs and economic activity. "It is a clear sign of confidence in the future of the Tasmanian economy, the broader community and our forest industry, which is a major supplier to the Boyer Mill," Ms Giddings said.

“Norske Skog has given a commitment to source Tasmanian suppliers and local employment for the redevelopment in order to further support the local economy. The upgrade will allow the mill to satisfy the growing market demand for catalogue grade paper. By moving with the times we can be confident the mill will have a long future.

Mr Adams said the funding would be provided to the project in the 2013-14 financial year. “The project will secure and create local jobs and will build certainty and confidence for other investments in the region," he said. "It will also allow the Derwent Valley to start to recover from the huge impact the downturn of the forest industry has had on the area."

VOLUNTEERS from the Friends of Willow Court have made a good start on the restoration of the fence at the entrance to The Avenue. After years of neglect and abuse, the heritage gateway is now on the road to restoration.

Volunteers spent yesterday and today on the job, under the supervision of restoration expert Rod Quarrell. The work was approved by Heritage Tasmania and is expected to be concluded next weekend. Many layers of paint were removed, which revealed that while the fence has been white for several decades it was once blue. It is believed the repaired structure will be coated in pitch rather than paint.

The fence and gateway was installed in 1938, which was the time the then Lachlan Park Hospital was expanding beyond its walled enclosure between The Avenue (originally an extension of Burnett St) and Humphrey St. The fence appears to have been altered for road-widening at some point, which is possibly when the gates were removed.

Cyclists surge into Strathgordon

STRATHGORDON surged into life this afternoon when the 2012 Tour of Tasmania arrived in town. The winner of last Sunday's snow-shortened Launceston to New Norfolk Classic, Darren Lapthorne, claimed victory in today's arduous leg of the tour. The race started in New Norfolk this morning and finished a gruelling 123.5km later at Lake Pedder.

Like he did in Sunday's classic, the 2007 national road champion crossed the line solo in the picturesque village on the shore of Lake Pedder. The finish line was a welcome sight for riders, who endured an undulating course. “It was a really hard day,” said Lapthorne, who described it as “one of the best road stages we’ve done in an Australian tour.”

It was the first running of the New Norfolk to Strathgordon leg and the difficulty of the stage was highlighted by the first and last riders being separated by almost 50 minutes. Today's sprint jersey went to Neil Van Der Ploeg, while the Norske Skog King of the Mountains leader is John West Cycling’s Matthew Clark. Many of the competitors are overnighting in New Norfolk ahead of tomorrow's Westbury criterium which starts at noon.

Norfolk family founder dies

THE founder of the global network of places named Norfolk or Norwich has died in England, aged 85. Derek Bickford-Smith established the Norfolk and Norwich World Family 20 years ago, eventually linking up about 60 communities around the world, including New Norfolk and Norfolk Island.

Norwich is the principal city of the county of Norfolk in England and both names have been carried around the world. In 1991 Mr Bickford-Smith came up with the idea of identifying and linking communities with Norfolk and Norwich connections. In 1996 the first world family gathering was held in Norwich, England. The next was on Norfolk Island in 2000, followed by Norfolk County in Ontario, Canada, in 2006. The 2008 gathering was held here in New Norfolk to coincide with the town's bicentenary. New Norfolk was represented at all four gatherings and is a founding member of the group.

Over the last two decades, he travelled more than four million kilometres visiting Norfolk/Norwich communities and addressing dozens of meetings on his globe-trotting mission. In 2004 he published the book Norfolk and Norwich World Family and in 2007 he sent a Norfolk and Norwich World Family plaque to Buckingham Palace.

He is survived by this wife Huguette, five children and five grandchildren.

Sign of the times

IT'S probably a fair bet that the people behind the recent alteration to the Hamilton Show sign were not expressing a distaste for salad.

The change to the Upper Derwent Valley landmark was made a couple of weeks ago and no-one is known to have claimed responsibility. The top section of the painted-rock sign has been changed from "HAMILTON SHOW" to read "NO GREENS". The lower section still carries the date of this year's show.

This is thought to be only the second defacing of the sign since it was built on the hillside facing the Lyell Highway in 1961.
