Two up, one down

Vietfinn Silk, 37 High St.

A SHOP specialising in free-flowing women's wear opened in the old Glasser and Parker shop at 37 High St yesterday. Vietfinn Silk is a wholesaler and retailer previously seen at Channel Court Shopping Centre and at various pop-up locations including Salamanca Place in Hobart and at the Autumn Festival in New Norfolk.

The shop appears to specialise in loose styles of comfortable everyday wear including tops, bottoms, dresses, accessories, handmade bags and more. Sizes 8-28 are on offer, in fabrics such as silk, silk/cotton blend and linen. Read more on their website and Facebook page.

Head Above Water, 32 Burnett St.

Head Above Water fish and chip restaurant opened about a fortnight ago at 32 Burnett St in the old Mario's/La Bella/DJ's pizza shop.

Initially open seven days a week, the shop was swamped with customers had to close briefly to allow the owners to restock. The offerings include freshly-cooked fish, chips and various seafood selections. Opening hours are posted on the door and reviews can be read here.

Sadly amongst the good news of these businesses opening, the ANZ Bank has announced its intention to close its New Norfolk branch on November 21, citing increased ATM use and internet banking as the reason for changes in the way customers have been using the branch at 23 High St.

The bank says local accounts will be transferred to the Glenorchy branch unless customers advise otherwise. It says customers will still be able to bank locally with ANZ using an automatic teller or in person at the New Norfolk Post Office.

Claremont 11.5 (71) defeated Lindisfarne 8.15 (63)
The undefeated run of the Two Blues throughout season 2016 came to end as the reigning premiers stole the show and took out the final roster game of the year yesterday. Claremont held the lead from the first bounce.

The final quarter was a great end to an absolute thriller of a game. The Two Blues fought hard but it just wasn’t enough for them to take the lead. The Magpies ended up winning the game with a tight nine-point margin.

Jake Gillie led the Magpies to victory with an impressive five-goal haul, followed by Sean Salter with two. Troy Cunliffe led the scoring for Lindisfarne with three goals, followed by Oliver Rand with two and Michael Clark, Ryan Edmondson and Nathan Hutchinson all finished with one each.

This was the final home and away round of the season and even though the Magpies took the win they still sit behind the Two Blues on the ladder. It is possible they may go head to head in the finals, maybe more than once.

In the Colts fixtures involving both clubs, Lindisfarne was defeated by Southern Storm at Cygnet, while the Magpies were defeated by Brighton. In the Reserves, Claremont came out on top against Lindisfarne by 35 points.

Dodges Ferry 15.16 (106) defeated Sorell 10.15 (75)
This was the last match of the season for both of these teams but Dodges Ferry came out on top with a big win over the Sorell Eagles. In the Under 18s Dodges Ferry defeated New Norfolk and in the Reserves they again defeated Sorell.

Hobart 12.15 (87) defeated Huonville 7.10 (52)
The Tigers have made the finals after capping a ripper of a win over the Lions yesterday. In the Reserves, the Tigers came out on top after a close match, and in the Under 18s the Lions came out on top with a big 49-point win.

Claremont and Lindisfarne go head to head in their final match before the finals in one of the most anticipated games of the season. Lindisfarne has an unblemished record so far and will be keen to defeat the reigning premiers and finish their season undefeated.

Dodges Ferry v Sorell at Shark Park, 2pm
Dodges Ferry and Sorell sit in the bottom two spots on the ladder. This will be the last game of the season for them both, as neither team is in a spot where they can advance their position on the ladder.

Hobart v Huonville at TCA Ground, 2pm
This will definitely be the match of the round as the winner will finish in fifth place on the ladder. Hobart and Huonville have been fighting around the middle of the ladder for the entire season, so it will be an interesting match to watch to see who can finish on top.

Mt Field centenary weekend coming up

THE 100th birthday of Tasmania's oldest national park - Mt Field - will be celebrated this weekend.

The three-day Mt Field centenary program includes guided walks, Discovery Ranger activities and a community barbecue.  On Monday, August 29, there will be the cutting of a special birthday cake by students from Westerway Primary School Wilds and members of the Friends of Mt Field volunteer group.

There will be free entry to all of Tasmania's national parks on the centenary weekend as well as during the upcoming school holiday period from September 24 to October 9.

Eagles lose nail-biter in SFL Round 20

Brighton 9.8 (62) defeated New Norfolk 9.7 (61)
The Robins defeated the Eagles in a thriller of a game on Saturday, pushing the Eagles back into fourth position on the ladder with only one round left to play for this year's SFL finals series.

The first quarter finished with New Norfolk in the lead by three points. Both teams were putting up a strong fight and showing their determination to win. The second quarter was much the same: the score was constantly changing and both teams were taking turns of being in front. By half-time the Eagles were five points ahead.

After half-time both teams came out primed and ready to secure themselves a win, but the Robins came back that little bit stronger and started to move ahead of the Eagles. By the end of the third quarter the teams had switched positions and the Robins now led the Eagles by four points.

The final quarter was an absolute thriller to watch, the teams were battling hard to come out on top and the lead was constantly changing with each new goal kicked. It was a close game but the Robins managed to score just before the siren leaving them 1-point ahead to win the match.

Callen Daly led the way for the Robins managing to score three goals, followed by Luke Adams and Wade Booth with two each. For the Eagles, Michael Thompson, Blair Wardlaw and Jacob Wigg scored two each.

The win for the Robins moved them up to the sixth position on the ladder, equal with Huonville, while the loss for the Eagles moved them out of the top three and into fourth position.

The Robins played well in all three games played on Saturday. In the Reserves they had a 25-point win while in the Under 18s they played a ripper of a game to win by 100 points.


Lindisfarne 17.21 (123) defeated Dodges Ferry 10.6 (66)
After an even opening quarter the Two Blues shot forward and now sit one win away from an unbeaten roster season. Dodges Ferry, on the other hand, remains anchored at eighth on the ladder. Lindisfarne came out with wins in both the Reserves and the Colts again this week.


Cygnet 25.15 (165) defeated Hobart 14.9 (93)
A big win for Cygnet secured them a spot in the top three for the upcoming finals. This massive win was brought on by a huge effort from forward Ben Halton who kicked 11 goals. In the Reserves the Tigers came out on top with a 24-point win, while in the Under 18s Southern Storm scored a massive 101-point win.

This is a very important game for both teams. The Robins are looking to win at home to finish their season on a high, while New Norfolk is still battling to secure a spot in the top three.

After a slow start to the season the Eagles have fought hard to get back amongst the top teams before the finals come around. Currently New Norfolk is sharing third position on the ladder with Cygnet, so a win this weekend could give the Eagles a one-game advantage over the Port and help them get closer to another crack at the SFL title.

The Robins have been playing some great footy in the back end of this season, but currently are sitting just a couple wins outside reach of the top five. Both teams will be desperate for the win at this point of the season. They will both be fighting hard and giving it their all to secure a strong finish as we come up to the end of the season. It’ll definitely be an interesting match to watch.

It doesn’t matter how this game turns out. The Two Blues will remain on the top of the ladder and take the 2016 minor premiership with another round still to play. The Two Blues are undefeated this season and currently sit two wins clear of Claremont while holds second position on the ladder.

Cygnet v Hobart at Cygnet, 2pm
This is the final match for the Port before the finals begin, and a very important match for the Tigers. Cygnet has secured its spot in the top four for the upcoming finals but it would be good for them to get another win this weekend - they might even lock in the top three. A win for the Tigers would put them in good stead for the upcoming match against Huonville, and go a long way to secure them in the top five and a chance in the finals in two weeks time.

Highlands mayor stands down

THE State Government has tonight paid tribute to Deirdre Flint following her decision to resign as mayor and councillor with the Central Highlands Council due to ill-health. It is understood Mrs Flint's resignation took effect immediately after today's council meeting.

"On behalf of the Government, I would like to thank Deirdre Flint for her tireless service to the Tasmanian community and especially the Central Highlands," State Treasurer and Local Government Minister Peter Gutwein said.

"Mayor Flint has been an extraordinary representative of her community. A councillor since 1996 and mayor since 2002, Deirdre has also played leading roles in various organisations such as the Hamilton Agricultural Show Society, the CWA, the Red Cross, the Launceston Chamber of Commerce and the Premier’s Local Government Council, to name but a few," Mr Gutwein said. "Deirdre has also made significant contributions to the Liberal Party both at a state and federal level."

"As Deputy Mayor Andrew Downie is currently on leave, Cr Lana Benson has been appointed Acting Mayor. The Electoral Commission will now work with the Central Highlands Council to conduct a by-election to fill the council vacancy," Mr Gutwein said.

Cr Benson was elected to the council in April via a by-election following the resignation of Cr Evan Evans.

Claremont 10.4 (64) d New Norfolk 7.8 (50)
The Magpies bounced back on Saturday with a 14-point win in this important encounter between the arch rivals. In the first half of the game the Eagles struggled to keep up with what the Magpies were doing. The Claremont playmakers had a good start to the match including a really strong defence that repelled the Eagles attacks time and again.

The second quarter of the match saw the Magpies start to break well away from the Eagles. After half time this all changed as the Eagles came out stronger than before and fought back hard against the Magpies, ending the third term two goals ahead and showing no signs of slowing down.

As the teams began the fourth quarter the Magpies weren’t ready to give up and showed some of last year’s premiership form as they came in and ambushed New Norfolk, finishing the game 14 points ahead. The Eagles remained scoreless in the final quarter in a disappointing finish.

For the Magpies, Jake Gillie kicked four goals, followed by Sean Salter and Jye County with two each. For the Eagles, Mitchell Rainbird scored three goals Tristan Triffett managed two while Ben Lovell and Blair Wardlaw scored one each.

With this win the Magpies will definitely finish in second spot on the ladder and will host the Qualifying Finals in three weeks time. The Eagles now sit equal third on the ladder with Cygnet.

In the Reserves, the Magpies defeated the Eagles with a huge 91-point margin. Key forward Ricky Martin pulled a huge 10-goal haul during the game. In the Under 18s the Magpies came through once again, beating the Eagles by a 73-point margin.

Cygnet 13.10 (88) d Huonville 9.13 (67)
After trailing by more than two goals at half time, the Port fought hard to get back into this match and went on to defeat Huonville. The win puts Cygnet in equal third place with the Eagles, while the Lions sit equal fifth with Hobart. In the Under 18s, Southern Storm came through with a massive win over the Lions while in the Reserves game Huonville came through with a strong 41-point win over the Port.

Brighton 8.9 (57) d Sorell 4.8 (32)
The Robins have continued their strong form in the back end of the season as they secured a strong win over Sorell. Brighton came out on top in all three games it play, defeating Sorell in the Reserves and Lindisfarne in the Colts variation fixture.

September opening likely for police youth club

POLICE Minister Rene Hidding MHA has announced the posting of an additional constable to New Norfolk as part of the development of the state's newest Police and Citizens Youth Club (PCYC).

Mr Hidding joined senior police officers including Commissioner Darren Hine at the Derwent Valley Sport and Recreation Centre last week to announce the formation of the Derwent Valley PCYC at New Norfolk.

"PCYCs are a great way of engaging with young people in our community, and the centre will be funded under a joint arrangement with the Government and the Derwent Valley Council, with the Government providing $100,000," Mr Hidding said.

He acknowledged the council's contribution of $20,000 towards the conversion of the sports centre into a PCYC as well as an annual commitment of $35,000 towards the wages of a youth worker. PCYC chief executive Darren Clark said the centre would be open in about a month's time.

"A vibrant PCYC movement has an important role to play in reducing the involvement of young people in dangerous, criminal or anti-social activities, and I am very pleased that the Derwent Valley PCYC will be able to help those young people most at risk in the local community," Mr Hidding said.

"The Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management will provide a full time police officer to the New Norfolk station who will spend half his time at the new PCYC," he said.

"I thank the Derwent Valley Council for their support and contribution in carrying out the next steps to ensure this important project progresses, and look forward to seeing the centre thrive in the Derwent Valley community."

SFL Grand final rematch tomorrow

New Norfolk v Claremont at Boyer, 2pm Saturday
This game is a grand final rematch from last season and it’ll be a ripper of a game to watch as these teams are sitting next to each other on the ladder. The reigning premiers still sit four wins clear over the Eagles but this match will definitely be a close one as the pressure is on and things are heating up leading into the finals.

The last two times that these teams have played produced varied results. Early in the season it was the Magpies who came out on top, but more recently in Round 13 the Eagles turned the tables.

This game could make it three wins in the last four outings for the Magpies against the Eagles including last year’s Grand Final. Alternatively New Norfolk could step up again and fight hard to secure a win. Whoever wins this game it’ll be a very interesting match to watch as the stakes are high and the pressure is on for both teams.

Huonville v Cygnet at Kermandie, 2pm
Cygnet and Huonville both had losses last weekend and the pressure is on this week as these teams are next to each other on the ladder and there’s only one win between them. Cygnet is sitting in front of Huonville but losing to Sorell in Round 18 is not a good sign for this game. The Port will be working hard to redeem themselves and will come out on top of the Lions this week to secure their position on the ladder.

Sorell v Brighton at Pembroke Park, 2pm
Both teams will be fighting hard to secure a win. After several recent wins the Robins moved above Dodges Ferry on the ladder, and need a win this week to secure their position and start moving toward the next spot on the ladder. The Robins had a bye last weekend and will be fresh for this match. Sorell has the home ground advantage and will be hoping this is enough to see them win another round and jump off the bottom of the table.

Onns motoring into retirement

The Onns making news in this week's
issue of the Derwent Valley Gazette.

AFTER nearly four decades in the fuel business, Richard and Janet Onn have sold their well-known petrol station on the corner of Burnett St and Pioneer Avenue.

For most of that time the station operated under the BP banner until the Onns leased the site to cut-price operator Liberty Oil in 2003 and spent the next eight years running a successful tourism business. The United Petroleum brand was adopted when Mr and Mrs Onn resumed the running of the petrol station in 2012.

The business was transferred to new owners early last week and Mr Onn noted that the price at the petrol pump had dropped already. The new owner has other sites in Howrah and Sandy Bay and in partnership with United Petroleum would be able to match anybody’s petrol price, Mr Onn said. “This will be a great benefit for the local community,” he said.

The Tasman Bridge disaster of 1975 played a role in Mr and Mrs Onn relocating from Bellerive to New Norfolk. Mr Onn was the foreman for Warwick Motors, the well-known Nissan-Datsun dealer of the time, with a large team under his direction. With the Tasman Bridge out of action, the company established a small depot on the Eastern Shore, from where Mr Onn could look after the Datsun clients on that side of the river. But it wasn’t the same and before long Mr Onn started looking about for a business of his own.

New Norfolk’s BP service station was available and the couple took over the lease in October 1976. They eventually bought the business around 1980. At that stage New Norfolk was still very well served by seven full-service petrol stations. BP, Golden Fleece and Caltex all had Burnett St frontages, Ampol was on the corner of High and Stephen streets and Alvin Eiszele ran a Shell station in Humphrey St. Across the river, on Hamilton Rd, there was a Mobil opposite the bridge and the Shell Eagle on the corner of Back River Rd.

Like those throughout Tasmania, New Norfolk’s petrol stations operated on the roster system which meant closing at noon on Saturday and not reopening until Monday morning unless you were “on roster”. “It was all about service in those days,” Mr Onn said. “Checking tyres, oil and water, cleaning windscreens and identifying any little problems early on,” he said.

The Onns won several awards for operating the best service station in their category and always prided themselves in having one of the cleanest sites around. While still establishing themselves in the business, the couple enjoyed strong support from customers from the Hydro villages. “They would come into town and fill up on everything, fuel and food, and some of those same people still come in now,” Mr Onn said.

Those early customers might also have been drawn in by the big corporate promotions of the day, including the Smurf figurines sold exclusively via BP petrol stations. “Kids would come from everywhere for the Smurfs, it was a magnificent product,” Mr Onn said. That promotion also required Mr Onn to do duty in a Smurf costume, walking up and down High St. “We also had watches, silver-plated and gold-plated, for $3.99 and $4.99. We sold hundreds of them,” he said.

members of the RACT.

More recently, the promotion offering discount fuel to RACT members had also been very successful. Despite the increased custom generated by the RACT partnership, Mr and Mrs Onn and their staff continued to offer driveway service and always had time for a chat. “A great part of our clientele would be wanting a bit of conversation — some would stay for half an hour or so,” Mr Onn said.

Under its new owners the service station will have extended hours from 6am-6pm. Casual staff will stay on and Derwent Valley Auto Repairs will continue to do business from the property.

Richard and Janet Onn have no plans to leave New Norfolk and having raised their two sons here, will now have more time to spend with their grandchildren. Janet will still be heard as a volunteer announcer on community radio station Tyga-FM.

New Norfolk sandstone for Hobart restoration project

SANDSTONE sourced from New Norfolk is being used in the restoration of two colonial buildings that will form part of the Parliament Square development in Hobart.

As well as demolishing some buildings and putting up a new one, the developers are also restoring the old Government Printer's Office at 34-West Davey St and the former St Mary's Hospital at 36 Davey St.

Both buildings are presently hidden behind scaffolding and screens while external stonework and heritage restoration continues. The stone repairs require replacement of some stone and this is being sourced from the Linden quarry near New Norfolk.

Designed by William Porden Kaye in the Gothic Revival style, St Mary's Hospital was built in 1847 and operated until 1862. On the closure of the hospital the building was acquired by the Tasmanian Government for use by the Department of Lands and Survey and an extension was added along the Salamanca Place frontage. The building is said to have been vacant for more than 30 years.

Next door, 34-West Davey St was built in 1886 to house the Government Printer. It was designed by W.W. Eldridge who also opted for a Gothic Revival look. Both building appear destined for retail use as well as forming part of a hotel development.

Linden stone, sourced from near New Norfolk, has previously been used in landmark buildings including the construction of the Hobart GPO and the Supreme Court of Tasmania.

The New Norfolk led Dodges Ferry for the entire match and it wasn’t until the fourth quarter that the Sharks started to catch up but it was too late as the Eagles had already secured the win.

The Eagles had an absolute ripper of a first quarter, which set them up for the entirety of the match. The Eagles were on their A-game as they scored 7.2 (44) compared to the Sharks' 2.1 (13) by the quarter-time siren. The second quarter was a little different. The Sharks started to catch up and more than doubled their score, but the Eagles weren’t scared as they scored another three goals putting them four ahead of the Sharks.

After half-time the Sharks came back stronger and ready to give New Norfolk a good fight, but as they quickly increased their score so did the Eagles. The final quarter held most of the action of the day as Dodges Ferry came up behind the Eagles quickly, but instead of scoring the goals they needed, they finished with 2.5 which just wasn’t enough to close the gap.

At the end of the game New Norfolk came out on top with a 13-point lead after a tough game for both teams. Michael Thompson led the Eagles, topping the team list as the best player while also managing a seven-goal haul; followed by Nic Clayton with four and Jacob Wigg with two. For the Sharks, once again, Brent Dolliver led the pack with four goals, followed by Bradley Jackson with three.

In the U18s, Dodges Ferry played a solid game against the Eagles and came out with a 67-point lead. In the Reserves it was a different story, it was a very close game throughout the entire match but New Norfolk came through in the end with a two-point win.

From the first kick of the game the Magpies were on track for a strong victory over the Lions and they did not disappoint. In the Reserves the Magpies scored a 76-point win over the Lions, and in the U18s they had an even bigger win by 101 points.

Sorell 12.12 (84) d Cygnet 11.17 (83)
Cygnet seemed off its game this week. sitting in the fourth position on the ladder, the Port was beaten by the Sorell Eagles who still remain on the bottom of the ladder after gaining victory by one point. In the Reserves, Sorell led the game from the start with the Port only scoring nine points in the first half of the game.

Lindisfarne 16.12 (108) d Hobart 11.7 (73)
Lindisfarne continues its undefeated run in the 2016 season after fears in the third quarter about losing against the Tigers this week. Lindisfarne came out with a strong win in the Under 18s this week, also winning the Reserves with a 67-point win.

Police seek crash witnesses

AN international tourist was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition after being involved in a collision with a car on Boyer Rd yesterday afternoon.


Constable Chris Lovell of Bridgewater Police said the injured man was a 31-year-old from Hong Kong. The incident happened at about 3.55pm yesterday (Saturday).


"The tourist had been taking photographs of the River Derwent from the grass verge on the eastern side of Boyer Rd," Constable Lovell said. It appeared that the man had then been involved in a collision with a white Toyota LandCruiser while crossing the road.


Constable Lovell said the driver, a 29-year-old man from Old Beach, had tried unsuccessfully to take evasive action and came to an immediate stop. "The driver and his 18-month-old son who was also in the vehicle were not injured. Excessive speed wasn’t a factor," he said.

Crash closes Boyer Rd

POLICE have closed Boyer Rd due to a crash 2km from the Midland Hwy junction. Traffic to and from New Norfolk is advised to use the Lyell Hwy. Described as serious, the crash occurred around 4pm.


The Mercury reports that the incident involved a car and a pedestrian.

New Norfolk and Dodges Ferry will both be seeking strong wins this weekend, and this match will be a tough competition for them both.

New Norfolk is fighting to stay in the top three at the moment and a win for them is crucial this close to the finals. The Eagles played off in the Grand Final last season and for a chance to do that again they will need to work hard to earn a win this weekend and secure their position.

Dodges Ferry have had losses for four weeks straight and will be fighting hard against the Eagles to break their streak of poor form and come out with a win.

The Eagles are likely to prevail this weekend but it would be good to see Dodges Ferry put up a strong fight and earn themselves a win over New Norfolk in front of their home crowd.

Huonville v Claremont at Huonville
The reigning premiers are likely to defeat the Lions on the road this week, although it won’t be without a fight.

Sorell v Cygnet at Pembroke Park
Cygnet is currently fourth on the ladder only by percentage so a win is crucial if they want to stay in the top three and stand a strong chance in the finals. Sorell is still on the bottom of the ladder, so it’s safe to say it’s likely that Cygnet will take the points this week.

Hobart v Lindisfarne at the TCA Ground
Lindisfarne remains undefeated for the 2016 SFL season, so it seems easy to predict that the Two Blues will come out with another win in Round 18 against the Tigers.

It was a big match at Boyer on Saturday as New Norfolk and Hobart fought it out in the Heritage Round's Trevor Leo Cup. It was a close match, but the Tigers held on in the second half of the game to secure a win against New Norfolk.

In the first quarter of the game the Eagles were struggling to find their footing as Hobart took the lead. By the end of the quarter the Eagles faced a 10-point deficit but it was only early in the game. Well into the second quarter the Eagles were showing the power behind the home ground advantage and fighting hard to bring their score back up and overtake the Tigers. By the half-time siren they were up on points.

After half time the pressure was on for both teams, but the Tigers came back stronger and the Eagles just couldn’t keep up. By the end of the third quarter the Tigers sat on 9.9 (63) compared to New Norfolk’s 6.12 (48).

But the Eagles weren’t giving up that easy. The heat was back in the final quarter, but with under 10 minutes left the Tigers took control of the game and ended up finishing with a 10-point lead.

Luke Sullivan led the Tigers with three goals, while Sam Reeves, Mark Nichols and Bryden Goninon all scored two each. For the Eagles, Nic Clayton finished with three goals, while Michael Thompson kicked two.

Hobart defeated the Eagles in the Reserves in a close game with only a 3-point margin by the final siren. In the Under 18s the Eagles managed a win over Hobart by 42 points.
