FORMER New Norfolk fire chief Barry Lathey is one of more than 100 Tasmanians who have shared their recollections of "Black Tuesday" for the 50th anniversary of the bushfire disaster today. The Tasmania Fire Service collected video recordings via its travelling story booth throughout much of last year.
Mr Lathey made his contribution in April 2016 when the story booth was on site at the Derwent Valley Autumn Festival. Working in the Mt Lloyd area on February 7, 1967, Mr Lathey and his electrical apprentice Nigel Hansson saved two houses in the Mt Lloyd area.
RETIRED Upper Derwent Valley poppy farmer Lyndley Chopping recorded his recollections of the fire during a visit to the ABC studios in Hobart last October. As well as his own memories of the Black Tuesday as experienced at Ouse, Mr Chopping also related the story of his late father Reg Chopping who co-ordinated fodder relief for the many animals affected by the bushfires.
