BOTHWELL: After finishing runners-up last season, Bothwell I again fared very well, making the Fourth Grade preliminary final. Bothwell II had some good wins during the season, but just missed out on a finals berth in the last round. In only its second season after being in recess since the 1980s, the club as a whole has preformed very well. Standout players for Bothwell I were Matthew Eyles, Cody Eyles, Nathan White and Bradley Eyles. Bothwell II stars were Nathan Eyles, Craig Davey, Joey Eyles and Mark Pearce.
BUSHY PARK: The club moved back into Fourth Grade this season where it performed well, making the semi-finals. The team was well led by captain Shaun Fenton, who along with his mother Karen are the backbone of the club. Bushy Park has a talented list that will again have an impact in season 2017-18 . Standout players were Shaun Fenton, Troy Smith, Mitchell Crosswell and Dylan Grant.
GRETNA: With two two teams in the SCA, Gretna's number one team performed well in Second Grade, just missing out on a finals spot. Gretna II did likewise in Fourth Grade and only missed the finals by one more win. There were some very good individual achievements throughout the season and with a number of the younger brigade stepping up, things look positive for next season and beyond. Standout players for Gretna I were Glenn Blackwell, Ben Rainbird, Aaron Maddox and Craig Cunningham. For Gretna II, Jake Campbell, Jordan Hastie, Adam Browning and Jackson Ackerly starred.
MOLESWORTH: After missing out on the First Grade finals last season, Molesworth I went back to Second Grade and finished on top of the ladder. Although the team bowed out of the finals in straight sets, credit must go to the side as it did lose a number of key players in the off season. Molesworth II didn’t have the easiest of seasons in Seventh Grade, winning just the one match, but this young team had some great performances throughout the season which will definitely keep them in good stead for next year. Standout players for Molesworth I were Brad Coppleman, Joshua Ransley, Brayden Hodge, Jamie Adams, while Molesworth II’s best performers were Jack Evans, Liam Triffitt, Jayden Wilton and Jason Mallinson.
NEW NORFOLK: Of all our local clubs in the SCA, New Norfolk had by far the best on-field success this season. The Red Caps again had three teams in the competition.
- New Norfolk I improved its standing in First Grade from last season and although the side started slowly this time around, it went on to win eight matches in a row to make the preliminary final where it was defeated by eventual premiers Wellington. Star players for New Norfolk I were Seb Wishart, Nathan Eiszele, Jason Rigby and Stewart Rice.
- New Norfolk II was the most consistent team all season. The side made the T20 grand final, going down to Bagdad by seven wickets, but then powered on in the 50-over format to finish minor premiers and eventually premiers when it turned the tables on Bagdad in the big dance, winning by 96 runs. The side's best players this season were Aaron Drew, Josh Walsh, Jamie Hill and Cody Morgan,
- New Norfolk III, which moved from Sixth to Seventh Grade, grabbed an early trophy with a great win over the Weily Park Rockers in the T20 grand final. This very young side continued to impress and went on to make the semi-finals in the 50-over game, going down to eventual runners-up Wellington Standout players were Stuart Muir, Jake Bearman, David Mitchelmore and Jye Bearman this season.
T20 BLAST: The Milo T20 Blast program was run at Gretna and New Norfolk. With more than 30 kids participating over eight weeks, it was plenty of fun indeed. The kids learned many skills of the game in what was an exciting atmosphere each week. I would like to thank all parents from both clubs for their help and in particular Josh Walsh for his help with the co-ordination of this program. Josh has played a big role with in junior cricket this season while still managing to play a full season of senior cricket himself. The Fourth Grade premiership was a great reward for this hard work.
in2CRICKET: Annie McKenzie and Tash Farrow ran two separate Milo in2Cricket seven-week programs at Glenora District School, with nearly 30 kids thoroughly enjoying themselves. A big thank you to these two ladies and the parents for the guidance of our stars of the future. Many children have gone on to T20 Blast and junior cricket in the seven years Annie has been
co-ordinating this program. It’s an integral part of the pathway to senior cricket.
Cricket continues to grow as it becomes a sport for all. So much so, women’s cricket has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years and is now growing at a rapid rate all over Australia . I’m guessing it won’t be to much longer before we see a team from the Derwent Valley.
So, on that positive note, I shall pack my keyboard away for a welcomed rest. Well played to you all.
