Young footballer needs a leg up

YOUNG New Norfolk footballer Bailey Wheeler is making his mark on the game and looks to have a bright future. Wheeler, 12, has been selected in the state Under 12 team that will travel to Darwin in August. He plays for the New Norfolk Under 12s in the STJFL.

Wheeler has been trying out for the state team for the past 12 months and was thrilled when he got the the phone call with the good news, but it was mum Casey who was over the moon and jumping around the lounge room. "Yeah, Mum was pretty happy," the quietly spoken footballer told me while on his way to watch the mighty Eagles senior teams at Boyer Oval.

But, like all things, Wheeler's selection for Tasmania comes at a price - more than $5000 - covering accommodation and flights for himself and his mum, plus uniform and other costs. His mum has already put plans in place such as a raffle to help ease the costs, but is now looking for potential sponsors or donors to help make ends meet. If you are able to help out, you can contact Casey Hack on 0406 909 167.

The talented footballer comes from some good footy stock. His grandfather Joey Hack has had a big influence on Wheeler's development and is a former New Norfolk senior player who featured in the club's drought-breaking TFL premiership in 1982.

Wheeler's father Luke is having a run in the reserves this year, while mum Casey Hack put her hand up this year and is coaching the Under 8s. Younger brother Taj is in the Under 12 team while elder brother Zac plays for the Under 14s and by all reports is also doing very well. To cap it all off, their two-and-half-year-old sister Ava is the mascot at every game. All three boys wear their grandfathers old guernsey number 11.

In the lead-up to the interstate game, Wheeler Bailey is giving his all for the Under 12s each Sunday and also training with the state team to keep his fitness up for what will be his biggest test when he faces off against the country's best footballers. All in the Derwent Valley will wish the youngster all the best and will be keeping a close eye on the team.

Nicholls, John Hutton, Nick Piuselli, Kerry Ransley, Michael

MOLESWORTH Cricket Club held its annual dinner and trophy presentations for the 2016/17 season at the Star and Garter Hotel. Some 60 people attended the night, including players, partners and life members.

For Molesworth I, Brayden Hodge bagged five trophies, while Jack Evans took home four for Molesworth II. Joshua Ransley also did well collecting three trophies including the club's Best Under 21 Player award. Ransley also won the same award for the Southern Cricket Association in second grade. Well done to all trophy winners.

The highlight of the night was when club stalwart Craig Coppleman had life membership bestowed on him. Coppleman has given great service to Molesworth over many seasons since starting his career in 1986. After three years with the club he then had one season with Glenora/Ellendale before returning to Molesworth for another three summers. He then had one season at Lauderdale and then from the next season returned to Molesworth where he played until 2008. He played in the 1993/94 B Grade Premiership with Molesworth II in the then Derwent Valley Cricket Association. This was also the season that the club took out the double with Molesworth I also taking out the premiership.

The Coppleman name goes back a bit with the Molesworth club, with Craig's father having played there as well. The name continues with Craig's sons, Bradley and Daniel, putting in some fine performances that must give great pleasure to their dad. Since retiring from playing, Craig has umpired in the Southern Cricket Association where he has given the same dedication as he did during his playing days. Congratulations Craig, your input into the club and the game is a credit to yourself, well done.

Danny Godfret Memorial Trophy winners Jack Evans and
Bradley Coppleman.
The club would like to thank Steve Salter at the Star and Garter Hotel for his help towards the night and also thanks all sponsors and trophy donors for the 2016/17 season.

Weather permitting, the Tasmania Fire Service will be conducting fuel reduction burns on Wednesday 10th May at Moogara Rd as part of the state-wide Fuel Reduction Program which is aimed at reducing the bushfire risk to help protect lives and communities.

The total area of these burns will be approximately 230 hectares, and are likely to take 2-3 days to complete. Smoke may persist some days afterward depending on wind conditions.
