Issued at 4:22am on Saturday 30 September 2017.

Snow covered roads above 300 metres will make driving conditions dangerous during Saturday in parts of the North West Coast, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

For information on any road closures, please contact your local council or the Police.

The next alert will be issued by 11am Saturday.

Sheep graziers warning

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the Upper Derwent Valley, King Island, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Central North, North East, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 11:25am on Friday 29 September 2017.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong westerly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the King Island, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Central North, North East, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 5pm Friday.

Mr and Mrs Pickery found

POLICE have advised that Gordon and Hazel Pickery have been safely located in Glenora Rd, New Norfolk, after being missing since yesterday afternoon.

Searchers worked throughout the night and located the couple around 9am today. Mr and Mrs Pickery are being medically assessed. 

Police thank members of the public for their information and assistance in relation to this matter.

Concern for local couple's welfare

POLICE are searching for Gordon Pickery, 83, and Hazel Pickery, 79, who were last seen at the Woolworths supermarket in New Norfolk at 11.45am today (Tuesday). Relatives hold concerns for the couple, with both having medical conditions that require attention.

"Police are asking the public to make contact on 13 14 44 if they may have seen this elderly couple in the New Norfolk or Derwent Valley area after this time," Acting Sergeant Michael Bobrowski said.

Frosts with temperatures down to -1 degrees are forecast for Wednesday morning in parts of the North West Coast, Central North, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Please be aware:  Temperatures at ground level can be many degrees lower than those recorded by standard weather stations, especially in calm conditions with clear skies.

No further warnings will be issued for this event.

New roles for youth worker

OUTGOING Derwent Valley Council youth and community participation officer Matt Hill says he will stay involved with many of his project groups despite parting ways with the council from today.

Leaving the council after nearly 15 years service, Mr Hill has started his own consultancy and will continue to volunteer with a number of groups.

Last week's annual general meeting of the Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D'FAT) put a number of questions to council representatives about the future of the group, which has been supported by Mr Hill since its inception.

Mayor Martyn Evans assured those present that the council would continue to support the group, which is a Special Committee under the Local Government Act. He said councillors were anticipating a report from the council's general manager about the ongoing provision of youth support services.

Mr Hill was elected chairman of the Derwent Valley Community House at its AGM last week and has involvement with other groups including the Community2Sea program, 26TEN Derwent Valley Action Group, Derwent Valley Learning Precinct; New Norfolk High School Association, Fairview Primary School Association, Derwent Valley Men's Shed and the Derwent Valley PCYC. He is also a presenter on radio station Tyga 98.9FM and public officer/treasurer of the Derwent Valley Suicide Awareness Group.

Police seeking witnesses to fatal car fire

POLICE are seeking witnesses to a tragic event at the Millbrook Rise boat ramp at New Norfolk yesterday afternoon.

At about 4.30pm yesterday, emergency services responded to a report of Toyota hatchback being on fire at the boat ramp.

"Once the fire was extinguished, a deceased person was located in the vehicle," Detective Constable Ian Crowther of Tasmania Police said this afternoon.

"Forensic officers and investigators have been in attendance since the fire was extinguished, and have commenced a coronial investigation. There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death," Constable Crowther said. "Investigations are continuing and forensic results are pending. A report will be prepared for the coroner."

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time of the vehicle fire, particularly those who may have dash camera or video footage.

Anyone who may have information in relation to this incident is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Three Eagles go out on a high

FOR three outstanding footballers, the script for last weekend's SFL grand could not have been written any better.

For Luke Joseph, Roger Belcher and Jason Laycock New Norfolk's nail-biting five-point premiership win over Lindisfarne was the last match in their their illustrious careers.

Joseph, or “Jopha” as his team-mates call him, began his long association with the NNDFC back in the 1997 with the Under 18s. His first senior game was in 1999 against North Hobart at Boyer Oval.

His football resume reads like no other with 383 games (285 seniors, 98 reserves), making him the club record holder for the most games played.

Joseph, who has his 38th birthday soon, played in nine senior grand finals for six premierships - twice as captain - and also the 2002 reserves grand final where the side was runner-up to Clarence.

Joseph missed only five games in his 20-year career: one in 2005 due to a shoulder injury and four matches in 2015 after he broke his foot. Joseph also played 10 seasons without playing a reserves game from 2007-2016.

Another club legend, Roger Belcher, or “Belch” as he is known, also bows out with a resume up there with the best. Belcher first played for the club in 1995 in the Under 17s. He progressed to the Under 18s in 1996 and also had one reserves game that year.

Belcher then played country football for Tunnack and Mt Pleasant, winning the ODFA senior best and fairest award twice, before returning to the Eagles in 2001 where he would play for the next 17 years.

Saturday’s senior grand final was the on-baller’s 308th club game for New Norfolk and of that total, Belcher has played a staggering 301 senior games, which is the club record. For 15 seasons straight (2002-16) he played seniors football only.

Belcher played in a mammoth 10 senior grand finals for the NNDFC for seven premierships, and to top it all off, won two William Leitch Medals as the best and fairest player in the SFL.

Former Essendon ruckman Jason Laycock also bowed out of footy after last Saturday’s win. Laycock, a 2005 AFL Rising Star nominee, played 58 games for Essendon, won a TSL premiership with Burnie and now has a premiership medallion with the New Norfolk Eagles.

Laycock was instrumental in the grand final win. He kicked a crucial goal in the second quarter and rucked tirelessly all day, in particular in the dying stages of the last quarter when the footy was in the Two Blues’ forward line. Then, in the dying minutes of the game, he roved his own ruck work and helped get the ball forward where Marcus Parker sealed the win with an off-the-ground goal.

Laycock’s efforts were rewarded when he was judged best on ground for the Gorringe-Martyn Medal. After playing one season of 17 senior games for the mighty Eagles, the big man bows out with plenty - the Les Hepper Medal as the club’s best and fairest senior player, a premiership and best on ground
medallions.

To the three retirees, the New Norfolk football community says thank you for your contributions.

Vehicle fire at boat ramp

IN their fourth callout of the day, the New Norfolk Fire Brigade is now responding to a vehicle fire at the Millbrook Rise boat ramp, off the Lyell Highway between New Norfolk and Sorell Creek.

Earlier today the brigade responded to two alarm calls and a structure fire. A heavy tanker is in attendance at the boat ramp incident which was reported at 4.21pm.

Fire at old Royal Derwent

EMERGENCY services are on the scene of a fire in the former pharmacy building at the old Royal Derwent Hospital Site. The incident was reported at 12.32pm and a heavy tanker from the New Norfolk Fire Brigade was on scene soon after.

The police and two more units from the local fire brigade arrived shortly afterwards and the small outbreak was soon contained. The building is attached to the former Ward 12, both of which have been vacant since 2001.

1.15PM UPDATE: Three units from the New Norfolk Fire Brigade are now responding to an alarm at the Millbrook Rise Hospital for Mental Health.

PURE elation was the reaction from Eagles players, fans and officials when New Norfolk won the SFL grand final on Saturday.

New Norfolk District Football Club president Ben Shaw had tears in his eyes as his happiness and relief spilled over.

Regarded as one of the best coaches in the league, Matthew Smith again proved you are never out of it. After the side trailed for most of the game, Smith - as he has done all season - showed his belief in the team. His rev-up at three-quarter time was more than motivating.

After the match he thanked his assistants, trainers and officials as he presented his hardworking staff with premiership medals.

Commiserations to reserves coach Robbie Iles and his side who played so well all season and put in a gallant effort in the grand final. You did your best and you all should hold your heads high. Let’s hope you all come back next year and go that one better.

After winning its 26th senior flag, the NNDFC has a record that is quite astounding to say the least. Since joining the Southern Football League in 2000, the senior team has now played in 11 grand finals from a possible 18 seasons.

From those 11 appearances, the team has now won seven premierships. Even more astounding is that the Eagles have played in eight grand finals in the past nine years and won six flags. Not a bad effort.

Furthermore, since joining the SFL the senior team has played in 364 games including finals, and from this total, it has won 285. That's an average of just under 16 wins for every season in the SFL. There have been only 79 loses, which is an average of just over 4 losses each season.

Of the 18 seasons played, the team has missed the finals on only one occasion, which was in season 2008. The figures show the dominance of this team. Well done NNDFC, your record is up there with the best.

DAMAGING WINDS DURING MONDAY

Weather Situation: A cold front will weaken near the west of Tasmania during Monday while a low and another cold front will approach the northwest Monday evening, as a ridge lies over the Tasman Sea, directing a strong northwesterly airstream over Tasmania.

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 km/h with peak gusts of mainly 80 to 90 km/h but locally to 100 km/h are possible over parts of western, southern, eastern and inland Tasmania during Monday morning and afternoon. Gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible over elevated terrain.
Locations which may be affected include Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving. 
* Listen to ABC Radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

Perri is the King of queens

WINNING the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football Association's Under 17 women's best and fairest award was quite the birthday present for New Norfolk's Perri King.

King turned 14 on the day of the STJFL best and fairest award night last month. The New Norfolk Under 17s women's team member took out the league award with 22 votes, five clear of her nearest opponent.

To play in an Under 17 team at age 14 is one thing, but to take out the association best and fairest is another and the accolades don't stop there. King is also the brainchild behind the women's football team becoming a reality.

After a number of chats with her school bus driver, NNJFC coach and long-time local football administrator David Banks about wanting to play football, David suggested that Perri's dad, Dean King, could be the coach and that's what happened. With a full list of keen as girls and a band of helpers, the NNJFC soon had its girls' team.

Congratulations Perri on your best and fairest award. Your will to achieve is just fantastic, and you certainly have proven that dreams do come true.

Sold! Who can it be?

AFTER more than two years on the market, the former Woolworths supermarket in New Norfolk has reportedly been sold. Vacant since the business moved to its new premises across the road in April 2015, the old supermarket was originally put up for sale by expressions of interest.

Most recently, the 1800 square metre building on its 3367 square metre site was offered for sale or lease by Edwards Windsor Real Estate, who said the location was ideal for a large retailer, or alternatively for developing into smaller retail premises, on a prominent corner opposite the new Woolworths supermarket, next to McDonalds and adjacent to Mitre 10.

While the price and the identity of the purchaser have not yet been disclosed, the most recent asking price of $650,000 was well below the the $1.1 million achieved in 1987 and $1.65 million in 2002.

WHO will forget the 2012 decider when Lindisfarne the red-hot favourite jumped away to handy early 6-7 goal lead, only for the Eagles to slowly peg the deficit back to win the title?

What a grand final match up we have today. The two stand-out teams all year will both go into the game expecting to win at their best.

Laycock the Eagles' best and fairest

FORMER Essendon and East Devonport ruckman Jason Laycock, 32, is this year's winner of the New Norfolk District Football Club's most prestigious award — the Les Hepper Medal for the best and fairest player.

Laycock, who played 14 of a possible 16 roster games, polled 42 votes in the seniors count, four clear of runner-up Mark Horne on 38. Having played with Cygnet last season, Laycock was lured to the Eagles team after moving to the Derwent Valley and has been one of the best recruits in recent times.

In the Reserves best and fairest count for the Roydon Howard Medal, Shane Bonnitcha took out the award polling 42 votes, 19 votes clear of runner-up Shaun Hughes. Bonnitcha has played in six senior premierships for the Eagles since 2005 and has been a great servant to the club.

In the Colts (Under 18s) Brock Triffett took out the J.H. Dixon Medal with 42 votes, four clear of runner-up Jayden Wilton with 38. After both Triffett and Wilton played in the premiership-winning Under 16s last season, the pair did very well to finish one and two this season.

Brother's personal monument to Lucille Butterworth

The Lucille Butterworth cairn alongside the Lyell Hwy.

A CAIRN in memory of Lucille Butterworth has been erected at a site along the Lyell Highway this weekend.

The site between Granton and New Norfolk is where police two years ago conducted a two-week dig for clues into the 1969 disappearance of 20-year-old Miss Butterworth.

Miss Butterworth's remains have never been found but Coroner Simon Cooper last year found that she had been picked up and killed by Geoffrey Charles Hunt. Despite the coronial finding, the state's Director of Public Prosecutions declined to press charges due to a lack of admissible evidence.


The Butterworth family recently unveiled a new memorial to Lucille at Claremont, opposite the Main Rd bus stop where she was last seen. That memorial takes the form of an illustrated storyboard.

The monument at the Lyell Hwy site is a large stone featuring a plaque, a photo of Lucille and personal messages from her brother James.

A shiny pyramid on top of the stone is inscribed with the following messages from Mr Butterworth:

An Evil Shadow 
The darkness of this place where you are lying will never cast a shadow on your beautiful face nor dull your memory
You were the brightest soul, never given a chance to grow old, but rest in peace my Lucille. You will forever shine brightly in my heart and memory.
I tried my utmost to bring he who took you from me to justice, however he has been named and shamed but no justice for you.

He may walk free but while there is breath in my body I will pursue the justice he so deserves. 
I would love the chance to dance with you again, see you smile again. I don't want to say goodbye.

The Stone for the Monument
Was removed from the West Hobart Quarry now closed. At the quarry in 1922 our grandfather Tasman Butterworth was killed by a falling rock and I saw it fitting to use a piece from the quarry for this Monument.

Memorials pay respect to the departed, but they are really for the living. They contribute positively to the grieving process by providing a sense of place and leaving a tangible record of a life lived for family, friends and future generations.

Gordon River Rd – open but proceed with extreme caution due to snow

Lake Dobson Rd – open but proceed with extreme caution

Lake Secondary Rd – open but proceed with caution

Lake St Clair Rd – open but proceed with extreme caution

Lyell Hwy (Wayatinah to Derwent Bridge) – open but proceed with caution

Marlborough Rd (Bronte to Miena) – open proceed with caution


Note: Snow drifts may form on roads due to the height of wind rows formed over the past week, caution is required.

Snow-covered roads above 500 metres will make driving conditions dangerous during Sunday in parts of the North East, Western, Central Plateau, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.
