Banners go up in record time

Christmas banners went up in High St yesterday.

THE Derwent Valley Council has set a new record with the much earlier than usual installation of Christmas banners in High St.

The welcome arrival of some Christmas cheer is the result of an ongoing initiative of the New Norfolk Business Alliance with the installation of custom-made banner poles down one side of the street late last year.

These have recently been supplemented by additional poles along the post office side of the street. The Christmas banners went up yesterday and is a vast improvement on previous years when the erection of the old-style decorations was a much more complicated affair.

The unique design of the banner poles allows them to be lowered by hand for the installation and removal of promotional banners. Community groups can contact the council about having their own banners displayed, as the New Norfolk Lions Club did recently.

Family garden day this Sunday

TWO of the Derwent Valley's most beautiful and interesting private gardens will be open for the public to visit between 10am and 4.30pm this Sunday, November 16 through the Alcorso Foundation's popular Family Garden Day program.

Entry costs $7.50 per garden. Accompanied children aged under 12 will be admitted free. Picnics welcome. An exclusive special edition wine by winemaker Julian Alcorso will be available for purchase on the day.  All proceeds from the Sunday Garden Visits go towards the Alcorso Foundation’s humanitarian education awards. "Valleyfield", Hamilton Rd (Lyell Highway) New Norfolk. 800m from the New Norfolk Bridge towards Hamilton on the left hand-side, "Valleyfield’s" three-hectare garden spreads from the main road to the edge of the waters of the Derwent River. It includes oaks, chestnuts, cedars and maples. Many of these trees are more than a century old. The coach house, stables and oast house will be open to visitors. There is rose walk to the river and a garden featuring a parterre and espaliered pears and crab apples. The house was licensed as an inn in 1822. Bring a picnic and enjoy your lunch in the garden overlooking the river or in the courtyard under the trees.

"Meadowbank", 652 Meadowbank Rd, Glenora. Meadowbank Rd is a gravel road on the right hand side of the Gordon River Rd 2km past Glenora District High School on the road to Westerway and Mt Field National Park. "Meadowbank" lies at the end of Meadowbank Rd (about 7 km from the turnoff).  The Victorian sandstone house (1873) is set in a beautiful garden adjoining the vineyard with stunning views over the Derwent River.  Several original trees remain, including a mulberry, pear and a snakebark elm. There is also a century old wisteria which frames the side veranda. The current garden, mainly planted from 1980, is reaching maturity and follows the plan of the original garden. It features low sandstone walls creating terraced lawns and garden beds following the contours of the land. Many roses, rhododendrons, camellias, and other perennial plants and shrubs mingle happily together in this large country garden.

The long-awaited extensions to the Molesworth Community Hall are now
under way and will provide an useful space the size of a badminton court.

YOUTH LEAGUE
Round 3 results from Sunday, November 9.

THERE were many highlights in the junior cricket last weekend. Of the New Norfolk Under 13s, Coby Kemmler did very well making 25 not out as did Jordan Gittus with 20 runs. In the Gretna Under 13s the team preformed very well against a much older Kingston Crows outfit. Brayden Butler did well and remained 8 not out as did Brodie Scanlon who made 5 not out and Aidan Featherstone 6. Callum Rogers bowled very well getting two wickets.

In the Under 15s game between Gretna and Molesworth the match came down to the final ball. Gretna batted first and made 10 for 112 with Jake Campbell top-scoring with 42 not out. Jeremy Nichols picked up 3-9 off 7 for Molesworth. In reply Molesworth was bowled out just two runs shy of victory. With one wicket remaining and needing two runs to win from the final ball, Gretna's Ryan Emery took a difficult catch off the bowling of Blake Mayne to give his side victory. Mayne finished with two wickets and Jake Ransley 3.

An equally big highlight from the Gretna/Molesworth match was the effort of opener J. Franklin for Molesworth who carried his bat right through innings to remain 44 not out. This is a fine effort. It was a great match to watch and the sportsmanship shown was a credit to both teams.

In the New Norfolk Under 15s match the Red Caps went down to Clarence. New Norfolk fielded first and kept  Clarence to 107 with Lucas Higgins bowling well taking 2 for 2 off three overs while Tyson Wakefield got his first wicket 1 for 5. Nathan Rice again bowled well, 1 for 15 off 7. The team fielded very well and snared four runouts. After being 2 for 42 New Norfolk was all out for 80. Jye Bearman did very well making 32. Dylan Morgan remained 9 not out and Nathan Rice got 8. The boys are improving every week.

Superbash wins to Norfolk and Molesworth

T20 Superbash cricket

WELL done to New Norfolk in its Tier 1 win over Molesworth in the T20 Super Bash last Friday night. The standout player was Josh Rowlands taking the incredible figures of 5 for 7 off four overs.

Well done also to Molesworth in its win over Derwent in Tier 2 with Brayden Hodge taking a hat-trick over two overs.

OF the seven Derwent Valley teams, Bushy Park and Molesworth II were the only two to record wins in the Southern Cricket Association last weekend. An outstanding eight-wicket haul by Bushy Park's opening bowler Mitch Crosswell helped his team easily defeat St Virgil's by 130 runs. Crosswell's fine spell of pace bowling smashed through the visitors line up like a wrecking ball at full swing. His final figures of 10 overs, one maiden, 8 for 23 was easily the best bowling this season thus far and if Crosswell's form continues, Bushy Park will cause much more havoc in third grade.  Earlier Bushy had hit up the good total of 197 with Nathan Grant doing well with the willow making 53 while captain Troy "Wizard" Smith chipped in with 30 and in a great all round effort Mitch Crosswell made 26. It was good to see Nick Fenton return to the team and making 19 and there is a whisper his brother Dale may make a comeback.

In other third grade match, Derwent defeated Gretna II by just two wickets at Gretna. Having first dig, the home side nearly faced out its 50 overs, making the competitive total of 147. Captain Damien Hack was the top scorer with 25. In reply Derwent was going along nicely but then lost quick wickets to be eight down with a further 22 needed. With the momentum with Gretna, victory was in their sights, but Derwent steadied and went on to win by two wickets. Adam Browning returned to form with the ball for Gretna, taking 4-25 to be the best of the bowlers, while brothers Luke and Zac Crosswell again got amongst the wickets.

Playing at home on Sunday, New Norfolk I went down to Wellington by 72 runs. Chasing 185 for victory, the Red Caps managed just 112 before being bowled out after 31 overs. Back in the line up, Adrian Eiszele did very well making 39 but had little support with Stewart Rice the only other batsman to reach double figures with 23. With the ball, Josh Dykes and Stewart Rice took three wickets apiece. New Norfolk is yet to record a win in first grade, but with a bit more persistence, it's not far away.

With a batting form slump, Gretna I failed to put a competitive total on the board against home side Sorell on Saturday. Batting first, Gretna was dismissed for just 87 off 29.5 overs. Captain Ben Rainbird was the only batsman to show any resistance with 23. Three other batsmen reach 13. For the Gretna bowlers, Corey Ransley did very well taking four wickets and had Sorell in a spot of bother, but it wasn't to be as the opposition ran away victors by five wickets. It will be a much more determined Gretna side this weekend in the match against St Aidans.

In the other second grade match, Molesworth I went down to Wellington by four wickets. Batting first, Molesworth made the total of 10 for 130 with Brad Coppleman top scoring with 32 and Josh Bomford remaining 23 not out. In reply, the home side made hard work of it, losing six wickets before claiming victory in the 26th over. For the Molesworth bowlers the ever improving Jye County claimed two wickets as did captain Jamie Adams.

In fourth grade on Sunday, New Norfolk II went down to Rokeby by 77 runs at Clarendon Vale. Chasing the home side's total of 203, the Red Caps were bowled out for 126 with Leigh Berry playing a lone hand making 83 and was the only batsman to reach double figures. With the ball, Nathon Heron was the best of the bowlers taking 1-21 off seven overs.

In fifth grade Molesworth II was a big winner over St Aidans by 176 runs on Saturday. Molesworth young gun Jack Evans stepped up to the plate with a top score of 58. Brad Ransley gave good support with 35, while younger brother Josh chipped in with 29 and Jake Foster 24. At the fall of the 10th wicket, Molesworth's total was 242. In reply St Aidans was bundled out for just 66. Josh Ransley capped off a great day with a fine spell of bowling of 4-15 off 9.1 overs. Jacksyn Mann also did equally well taking 3-10 off seven.
