Christmas parade today

Christmas elves were busy in High St
last night, placing Christmas trees at the
base of some of the banner poles.

THE Derwent Valley Council will close a number of streets in central New Norfolk for the annual Christmas Parade today (Saturday).

The direction of the parade has been reversed for this year's event, meaning a change to the schedule of road closures.

The parade will now start from the police station end of High St, rather than the traditional kick-off point in Circle St.

Bathurst St will be closed between Pioneer Ave and High St from 10am-2.30pm.
High St will be closed from Bathurst St to Stephen St from 10am-2.30pm.
High St will be closed from Stephen St to Richmond St from 11.30am-1.30pm, including access from Charles St, Burnett St and Circle St.

The council advises that vehicles parked in High St at the time of the road closures may not be able to be moved until the completion of the parade. Parking restrictions will apply in Bathurst St between Pioneer Ave and High St.

"Residents and road users affected by this event are asked to make allowances for interruptions and delays while the parade is being held. Council apologises for any inconvenience caused during this time," council general manager Greg Winton said.

The parade starts at noon, progressing up High St to Circle St and back down again.

Junior cricket latest

THE Glenora Milo In2Cricket group held its final session for the year at Gretna last Friday afternoon.

After their session the kids enjoyed a barbecue and the presentation of goodies and a medal each. To cap off the day they watched the T20 Blast participants in action.

Co-ordinator Annie McKenzie thanked all the youngsters for attending during the seven-week program, as well as helpers Tash Farrow and Peter and Finn Roberts who were a great help.

Weather Situation
A cold front over Tasmania with an associated deep low near the southwest coast will move away to the east tonight, with a southwesterly stream to follow. 
DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h tending west to southwesterly late this evening are possible for parts of the Upper Derwent Valley, Midlands, South East and East Coast districts. Winds are expected to gradually ease overnight.
Locations which may be affected include Swansea, Orford, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover. 
In the last 6 hours the highest wind gusts reported were 94 km/h at Tasman Island and Mt Wellington, 91 km/h at Bushy Park, 87 km/h at Dunalley and Tunnack

A cold front will cross Tasmania during the day and the associated low pressure system will deepen as it nears the southwest coast this afternoon.

FIRST GRADE
Persistence paid off for New Norfolk I when the Red Caps recorded their first win of the 50-over roster for 2016/17, defeating Rokeby by 52 runs. Wining the toss and batting, the home side made 8/201 off their 50 overs. After being 4/58, New Norfolk recovered well thanks to an excellent effort by Stewart Rice who made a valuable 69 runs with some big hitting. Rice's innings included seven sixes and two fours. Nathan Eiszele made 28 (one four, two sixes) as did Cody Neads who remained not out with two fours. Seb Wishart made 20 at number three. In reply, Rokeby fell short thanks to some great pressure bowling from New Norfolk. Opening pair Josh Rowlands 4-29 (9) and captain Jason Rigby 3-27 off eight overs bowled very well and tighten the screws early. Joe McCulloch 2-19 (7.1) and Nathan Eiszele 1-30 (8) were the other wicket takers. The Red Caps are now on the board and with this win will have plenty of confidence heading towards the Christmas break.

SECOND GRADE
Molesworth I made it three wins for the season with a very good 45-run win over Wellington at Boyer Oval. In a even batting performance, the home side had first hit, making the good score of 9/222 off 50 overs. Opener Brayden Hodge made 35 (four fours) as did captain Brad Coppleman who hit five fours and one six. Nick Piuselli also made 35, finding the boundary three times. Other opener Josh Ransley made a handy 27 (two fours, one six). Daniel Coppleman helped the tail wag with 21. In reply, Wellington was dismissed for 177 off 47.1 overs. Brad Coppleman put in a good day taking 3-30 off his 10 overs as did Brayden Hodge with 3-32 from 10 overs. Larry Menzie 2-36 off 8 overs and Josh Ransley 1-14 (4) were the other wicket-takers.

In the other Second Grade match, Gretna I had a three-wicket win over Old Beach at St Virgil's. Old Beach had first hit, making 10/127 off 38.5 overs. After getting the call up, Darren Lennox did the damage for Gretna, taking 4/23 off 10 overs in a good spell. The other main wicket takers were Craig Cunningham with 2-8 (4.5) and Luke Crosswell 2-29 (6). In reply, Gretna got the jitters but steadied the run chase finishing with 7/129 off 27.5 overs. Opening the batting, keeper Glenn Blackwell found some good form making a good half-century of 51, hitting five fours. Bruce Emery made 21 (two fours) as did Zac Crosswell who hit three fours.  Congratulations to veteran Bruce Emery who played his 200th match for Gretna I. He has now played 232 club games (200 for Gretna I and 32 for Gretna II).

FOURTH GRADE
Playing one short, Bushy Park got among the runs in a big way at home, recording a 28-run victory. After being sent in, they made 9/241 off 46.3 overs. This was due to Shaun Fenton who made an excellent 92, while Dylan Grant was just as good making an even 70. The pair put on a 163-run partnership. Earlier Trent Grant opened the batting making 17. In reply Derwent gave it a good shake but fell just short, finishing 9/213 off their 50 overs. Dylan Grant capped off a very good day taking 3-49 off his 10 overs. Trent Grant took 2-27 (10) and Jeremy Lowe 1-53 (10). In the end it was a very good win for the Bushy Park boys.

New Norfolk II recorded its fourth victory of the season with a good 54-run win over St Virgil's at St Virgil's. Batting first, New Norfolk made 10/150 off 39.3 overs. Aaron Drew top-scored with 24no, hitting three fours. Jamie Hill made 18 (one four) and keeper and opener Glen Williams made 17 while Mitch Rice made 16 (one four). Opening Red Caps bowlers Aron Drew 1-19 (9.2) and Cody Morgan-Coleman 1-9 (6) got the ball rolling. Josh Walsh backed up his team mates with 1-11 (7) and then club president Jamie Hill was thrown the ball by his captain and he didn't let him down. Bowling great line and length, Hill captured 4-15 from eight overs in a great display.

At Gretna, Gretna II 5/47 off 17 overs defeated Bothwell I 10/46 off 17.1 overs. The Bucks having first hit lost wickets regularly, due to the very good bowling from Corey Ransley who troubled all batsmen and finished with the excellent figures of 6-11 off nine overs. Adam Browning gave very good support and captured 4-34 off 8.1 overs. Simon Eyles top-scored for Bothwell making 17. In reply Gretna struggled early during the small run chase and at one stage the Bucks bowlers had bowled six maidens in succession. Craig Pursell 3-14 (7) and Nathan White 2-19 (8) kept the Gretna batsman honest and with a few more runs to defend it could have been a different story. Adam Browning finished the day off well and steadied the ship for the home team with 19no with three fours while opener Jordan Hastie made 13 hitting one four that just wasn't quite the six he was looking for. Gretna's fielding was a stand out during the match with all 10 dismissals being caught and no catches going down.

SIXTH GRADE
Molesworth II went down to home side Bagdad by nine wickets. Batting first, Molesworth were all out for just 39 off 22.2 overs. Top scorer came from number ten batsman Josh Nichols with 9 runs (two fours). In the run chase Bagdad finished 1-41 off 10.3 overs. Jake Sorrenson the wicket taker with 1-11 (2.3).

SEVENTH GRADE
New Norfolk III went down to St Anne's by four wickets at Tynwald Park. Batting first the home team made 10/124 off 47.5 overs. Jye Bearman made 23 to be the main run-scorer while Aaron Triffitt was next with 16 (one four). Nathan Cashion made 15no (one four). In reply, St Anne's finished 6/126 off 30.5 overs. Jye Bearman was again among the action and showing he has plenty of ability with both bat and ball finishing with 3-21 off 5 overs. Graeme Rowlands took 1-26 (10). There were two runouts.

EIGHTH GRADE
Bothwell II went down to Derwent at Bothwell by 45 runs on Saturday. The visitors had first dig, making 6/196 off their 50 overs. Brodie White 3-35 (10) and captain Peter Hansch 2-39 (10) were the main wicket-takers for the Bucks. In reply the home side was dismissed for 151 off 38.3 overs. Opener Michael White played a lone hand with a good knock of 65. Fellow opener Craig Davey was next with 13 and Blake Eyles made 10.
