POLICE advise motorists to drive according to the road conditions, allow a safe distance between other vehicles and take extreme care due to heavy rainfalls, particularly in the East and South East of Tasmania.

Local road hazards and closures as of 3.07pm, Sunday, December 3:

Road Closures
Highland Lakes Rd from Bothwell to Deloraine, open to 4WD vehicles or chained vehicles only.
Lachlan Rd, Lachlan, open to 4WD vehicles only.
Marlborough Rd, from Bronte to Swan Bay.

Hazardous Roads
Lachlan Rd, Lachlan, due to water on the road.
Lyell Hwy, Hayes, due to a small land slide.

Minor flood warning for Derwent and Clyde

Initial Minor Flood Warning for the River Derwent and River Clyde

Issued at 11.35am on Sunday 3 December 2017

Flood Warning Number: 1

Minor flooding is likely to occur along the River Clyde during Sunday and Monday.
Strong river rises are likely to be observed in other parts of the River Derwent and River Ouse, during Sunday and Monday. River levels may remain below their minor flood levels during Sunday.

In the 48 hours to 11am Sunday, widespread rainfall totals of 40 to 100mm were reported about the Derwent catchment. Further rainfall totals of 15 to 30 mm are likely to occur during Sunday. Snow is falling at higher elevations. Rain is expected to ease Sunday evening into Monday.

Minor flooding is not expected to extend downstream to Macquarie Plains and New Norfolk during Sunday.

Strong and dangerous flows may remain a hazard throughout the Derwent Catchment over the next few days.

River Ouse:

Strong river rises are likely to be observed in River Ouse, during Sunday and Monday. River levels may remain below their minor flood levels during Sunday.

River Clyde:

Minor flooding is likely along the River Clyde.

The River Clyde at Bothwell is currently at 0.42 metres and steady. The River Clyde at Bothwell is likely to exceed the minor flood level (2.00 m) Sunday evening.
The River Clyde at Hamilton may reach the minor flood level (2.40 m) during Monday.

Tyenna River:

Strong river rises are likely to be observed along the Tyenna River during Sunday.

Styx River:

Strong river rises are likely to be observed along the Styx River during Sunday.

River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam:

River levels below Meadowbank Dam may remain below their minor flood levels during Sunday.

River Derwent around New Norfolk:

Minor flooding is not expected to extend downstream to Macquarie Plains and New Norfolk during Sunday.

Flood Watch Number: 1

A complex trough of low pressure just east of Tasmania is directing cooler south easterly flow across the state. A low pressure system is moving south east along the trough, passing east of Tasmania , bringing rain to the eastern half of the State.

Catchments were dry, however in the 48 hours to 9 am Sunday, widespread rainfall totals of 40 to 60 mm have been recorded. Isolated higher totals exceeding 80 mm have also been observed.

Further rainfall totals of 10 to 20mm are likely about the north eastern river basins for the remainder of Sunday. Higher totals of 20 to 30mm are likely in the east, south east and elevated areas. Rain is expected to contract to the south east and ease through Sunday evening.

River rises are occurring. Minor flooding may develop from Sunday afternoon. Further catchment specific warnings will be issued if and when required. Flood warnings are current for the North Esk and South Esk Rivers.

Strong and dangerous flows are possible in small creeks and low lying areas in locations that receive heavy rainfall.

Catchments likely to be affected by this flood watch are: Derwent, Jordan, Coal and Macquarie rivers

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the Upper Derwent Valley, Furneaux Islands, Central North, North East, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Issued at 10:28am on Sunday 3 December 2017.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain, heavy at times, and strong southwesterly winds are expected during Sunday. Areas likely to be affected include the Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts and parts of the Furneaux Islands, Central North, North East and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Road Weather Alert for Tasmania
for the Upper Derwent Valley, Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 9:14am on Sunday 3 December 2017.

Reduced visibility and water on roads in heavy rain will make road conditions dangerous during Sunday in parts of the Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

Snow covered roads above 1000 metres will make driving conditions dangerous during Sunday in parts of the Central Plateau forecast district.

Views sought on reflective garden

A PUBLIC consultation session will be held this Sunday afternoon to gather views on a proposed Site of Reflection at Willow Court in New Norfolk. A project of the Friends of Frescati House, the Site of Reflection will be a small garden off The Avenue, opposite the former Royal Derwent Hospital administrative offices.

Members of the Friends of Frescati will be on site this Sunday from 2-4pm to discuss the project with any interested people. The proposal is to create a small garden space to provide a quiet place in the Willow Court precinct for people to reflect. This will be funded by a small Federal Government grant plus contributions from the Derwent Valley Council and the Friends of Frescati and several donors.
