New Norfolk footy stars popular on eBay

John Windsor.
FIFTY-YEAR-OLD raffle tickets featuring photos of leading New Norfolk footballers of the day have sold for more than $100 each in online auctions.

A ticket stub bearing a photo of John "Beatles" Windsor sold for $105.50 on eBay last night, after attracting 24 bids from four bidders.

Described by the seller as dating to 1970, the tickets also feature the names of local businesses, as well as each player's statistics.

Windsor's ticket advertises Lonergan's for family footwear, and describes the 24-year-old dairy farmer as a rover and pocket forward recruited from the New Norfolk Under-19s. At the time he was 5' 11" tall (180cm) and weighed 12 stone 4 pounds (78kg).

Greg Winters.
A ticket featuring Greg Winters sold for the same price and attracted 18 bids from four potential buyers.

His ticket advertised Ted Crosswell's BP service station and noted the 23-year-old ruckman's occupation as a pulp tester. Recruited from the Devonport Under-19s, Winter was 6' 2" (188cm) and weighed 13 stone 7 pounds (87.5kg).

The same seller is now offering similar items featuring Terry Lane and captain-coach Ricky Graham. The seller has started the bidding at $24.50 for the coach who was recruited from Geelong, and $11.50 for the home-grown Lane.

Salvos' doorknock goes digital

AFTER six decades of knocking on doors each May, The Salvation Army is taking its major fundraising appeal online in response to Covid-19’s impact on social contact this year.

Known as the Red Shield Appeal, this year's event will take the form of a "digital doorknock", with Derwent Valley residents asked to donate online to help those doing it tough.

"Australians are facing an economic and social crisis unlike anything witnessed in recent decades and The Salvation Army is preparing to provide hardship support on an unprecedented scale," Captains Tim and Di Size of the Derwent Valley Salvation Army Corps said.

“We anticipate seeing some of the greatest need that we’ve ever seen in our 140-year history serving Australians," Mr and Mrs Size said. "The Covid-19 crisis has financially crippled many Australians and it will take months to see the real impact it will have," the captains said.

Money raised from the Red Shield Appeal Digital Doorknock will stay in local communities to help fund community meals and welfare services such as the Doorways program.

The Salvation Army’s most recent annual report noted its social services provided more than one million sessions of care to Australians in need; helped 46,000 people experiencing homelessness, provided financial counselling to more than 65,000 and offered care to 13,000 people who were coping with family violence.

The Derwent Valley Salvos are seeking help to meet their
Red Shield Appeal target of $9500.
The past year also saw an ongoing response to drought, while Salvation Army Emergency Services responded to the rolling bushfires crisis by providing more than 500,000 meals and refreshments to first responders and displaced people.

“The Salvos are going digital this year and its easier than ever to volunteer your time and help raise money for those in need," Mr and Mrs Size said. "We are asking our local community to partner with us to provide the critical care needed as we face these challenging times. We know when the chips are down, Aussies come together and do what they can to give hope, this is no more important than now," the captains said.

Derwent Valley residents can support the local work of the Salvation Army by donating online or signing-up to volunteer to fundraise: digitaldoorknock.salvationarmy.org.au. The Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team has already signed up to help the local Salvos reach their fundraising target of $9500. Click here to donate via the D'FAT team.

Lions Club news: Meet Kerry Kievet

Lions Club secretary Kerry Kievit.
THIS week we continue our member profiles with Kerry Kievit, who is currently our secretary, a hard-working community volunteer, and excellent cook. Kerry was born in Hobart during the 1960s and in her early childhood travelled with her nomadic parents.

The family settled in Hobart in the 1970s where Kerry completed her schooling. She has been married to Michael, also a member of the Lions Club of New Norfolk, for 35 years. They spent much of their married life living on the North-West Coast of Tassie where Kerry worked as a manager in tourism and hospitality.

In 2016 Kerry retired due to multiple sclerosis (MS). With more time for family visits with their son and his family in New Norfolk, Kerry and Michael quickly fell in love with our town. It was an easy decision to move here.

Kerry began her significant local volunteer work soon after she arrived. “After settling in, we decided to get involved with Lions as a way to connect with the community," Kerry said. "We also felt that even though we are retired, we still had a lot we could contribute,” she said.

Today Kerry carries out the duties of club secretary, volunteers for most events including barbecues, operating the entry gates at Baskerville, selling raffle tickets, and is famed for her delicious two-course home-cooked meals at every Lions meeting.

From July, Kerry will be president of the Lions Club of New Norfolk. MS Limited also benefits from Kerry’s volunteering when she hosts regular face-to-face and telephone support groups and one-on-one support calls.

Kerry has been a member of our club for nearly three years and says: "from my very first meeting I have been made to feel valued. I have met fantastic people and have made great friends while contributing to the community-locally, nationally and globally.

"Of all the things we do and support, as a member of Lions I get the greatest satisfaction when we as Lions are able to supply the community with items they need, such as a blanket warmer for the district hospital,” she said.

Severe weather warning

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology

Severe Weather Warning
for DAMAGING WINDS and DAMAGING SURF
For people in King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North West Coast, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of North East, East Coast and Central North Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:10pm Friday, 1 May 2020.

DAMAGING SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS ACROSS MUCH OF TASMANIA DURING SATURDAY, WITH DAMAGING SURF ALONG COASTS ABOUT THE FAR SOUTH AND SOUTHEAST, AS WELL AS KING ISLAND

Weather Situation:
A very deep low pressure centre crosses southern Tasmania early Saturday, with strong south to southwesterly winds to follow throughout Saturday.

DAMAGING SOUTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h, are possible across much of Tasmania apart from parts of the northeast. Gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible about elevated areas as well as exposed coastal areas. The strongest gusts are expected to develop very early Saturday morning, with winds beginning to ease later in the day.

DAMAGING SURF, which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion, is possible along coasts about far south and southeast Tasmania as well as and King Island (including Tasman Peninsula, Bruny Island and Currie). Damaging surf is expected mainly along the west to south facing coasts in these areas.
Note that tides about south and southeastern Tasmania are expected to be higher than the usual tide, so local inundation may occur with damaging surf.

Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Surf Life Saving Tasmania advises no swimming in areas exposed to large surf.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

Warnings are also available through the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210.
