Long weekend bushfire advice

WARM to hot weather predicted for the Hobart Regatta Day long weekend will increase the fire danger in many areas of the state especially this Sunday. “As we approach the weekend, Tasmanians are reminded we are now in the traditional peak of our fire season," Tasmania Fire Service chief officer Mike Brown said today.

"Indeed, tomorrow, February 7, is the 47th anniversary of our disastrous Black Tuesday Fires when 62 Tasmanians lost their lives and more than 2000 homes were lost and, the fifth anniversary of the Victorian Black Saturday fires that claimed the lives of 173 people," Mr Brown said.

"With the very dry conditions that have continued for more than a month now, and the warm to hot conditions expected, particularly on Sunday, campers and bushwalkers are urged to be very careful with any campfires and to observe additional fire restrictions that many apply in parks and reserves.

“As we gain further information about expected weather conditions for Sunday there may well be a Total Fire Ban declared for Sunday, so people are asked to ensure they have alternatives such as gas barbecues or stoves for cooking outdoors.

The Tasmania Fire Service recommends everyone living in and around the bush to review their Bushfire Survival Plan and be prepared to implement their plan if required. Details on how to prepare a Bushfire Survival Plan, prepare your property for bushfires, or other fire safety tips can be found from the front page of the TFS website www.fire.tas.gov.au.

People should monitor the local ABC radio station or visit the TFS website to keep up to date with conditions.

Valley visitor sparks measles alert

A TOURIST with measles who visited Tasmania briefly at the end of January this year may have introduced the highly contagious infection to the state, including the Derwent Valley. Population Health Service senior medical advisor Mark Veitch today warned Tasmanians and recent visitors to the south of the state to watch out for measles symptoms during the first three weeks of February and consult a doctor if concerned.

“Measles usually starts with a fever, cough, sore red eyes and a runny nose about 10 days after contact with a person with measles,” Dr Veitch said. “A blotchy rash appears several days after the fever and people with measles are usually quite unwell. People with measles-like symptoms should see a doctor, but it is very important they call ahead so they can be seen without putting other patients and staff at risk of infection.”

Dr Veitch said the infected tourist arrived at Hobart Airport on January 30 between 9am and 10am and departed Hobart Airport on the morning of February 2. The infected person was a guest at the Hobart Tower Hotel and travelled to other areas in southern Tasmania, including Richmond, Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery and Mt Wellington (on January 30); Mt Field National Park and the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens (on 31 January 31); and Port Arthur (on February 1).

“People without immunity to measles who were at these places at around these times may have been at risk of catching measles. The risk of measles to the wider population is small, but a small number of non-immune people might have caught measles. If so their symptoms would probably start between today, February 6 and February 20,” Dr Veitch said.

GPs and Emergency Departments have been asked to be vigilant for people who may have measles. “People born before 1966 are probably immune from measles as are people who have had two doses of measles vaccine. It’s a very good idea for young and middle-aged adults who are uncertain of their immunity to discuss having a measles vaccine booster with their doctor,” Dr Veitch said.

People with measles can spread their infection from just before they get symptoms until about four days after their rash starts. Dr Veitch said people with measles should stay away from public places, including school and work, until their doctor advises them they can resume normal activities.

There have been no cases of measles in Tasmania since 2009. There were 200 cases in mainland Australia over the past 12 months, either caught overseas, or caught from someone who was infected overseas.

Bushfire awareness at Lachlan

AS the peak of the bushfire season approaches, the Lachlan Fire Brigade has invited local residents to a community fire safety information evening on February 11. Brigade chief David Gleeson said the event was part of the brigade’s community engagement plan, focusing on encouraging residents in the Lachlan Valley to be more bushfire aware.

“With the recent rain and growth of scrub and grass, followed the periods of hot weather, there is the potential for increased bushfire risk within the valley,” Mr Gleeson said. “Recent fire incidents in the area have highlighted the need for residents to be more bushfire aware and continue to prepare their properties.”

The community fire safety information evening will be held at the Lachlan Fire Station on Tuesday, February 11, at 6.30pm. Mr Gleeson said the public would be able to learn about community fire response plans, obtain the latest information and advice on preparing their properties as well as using household fire fighting equipment such as portable pumps and hoses.

“We’d like to see as many residents as possible come along and meet with the members of their local fire brigade as well as enjoying a sausage sizzle. We hope they also leave with a greater understanding of the role and responsibility of the brigade in protecting the rear flank of Hobart across the Wellington Range,” Mr Gleeson said.

Night-time win for Gretna

GRETNA Cricket Club had a good win over Molesworth in the Twenty20 match at Boyer Oval last Thursday night. It was a great match from the start, with many wickets falling and runs flowing.

Gretna made 9 for 137 off its 20 overs. Mathew Eyles top-scored with a well-made 35 while Aaron Triffitt was the main wicket taker for the home side with 3-15. In the run chase for Molesworth, 17-year-old Cody Neads who has batted superbly thus far this season, opened the batting and belted a terrific 66 with 8x4s and 3x6s. Neads has been batting superbly this season and his timing was spot-on in the night match. His innings was a pleasure to watch

Once Neads was out, the Molesworth wickets fell like ninepins and the side was bowled out for 120 in the 19th over. Molesworth looked all the goods until Neads got out and credit goes to the Gretna players for sticking at the game. Captain Matthew Eyles backed up his batting, taking 3-17 as did his brother Joey 3-26 while Peter Jelkic got two and Dylan Pearce one.

It was a great evening at Boyer Oval. There was a great crowd in attendance and the kiosk was well run by the Molesworth committee. A top job all round.

NEW Norfolk Cricket Club's in2CRICKET participants travelled to Bellerive last week for a clinic which was held for areas affected by last year's bushfires.
The kids, along with other groups, were treated with a cricket clinic by Australian men's and women's players Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell, Aaron Finch, Matthew Wade, Holly Ferling and Nicole Bolton.

The kids also got to ask questions and managed to get the players' autographs. A highlight was when Glenn Maxwell was set up by his team mates and had to sing a few lines from Times Like These by the Foo Fighters in front of the children. The youngsters had a great day and also got to watch the Australian men's T20 team train in the nets.

All in all the kids had a ball and would like to thank New Norfolk Cricket Club players Leigh Berry, Trent Mayne and Josh Walsh for putting on the Milo in2CRICKET sessions every week at Tynwald Park. There has been about 42 kids turning up each week and we are very proud of them all and we hope they continue on again next season.
