Minor Flood Warning for the River Derwent

Flood Warning Number: 2
Minor flooding may develop in the Clyde and Ouse rivers during Sunday afternoon, and extend into the River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam during Monday.
In the 24 hours to 9AM Sunday, rainfall totals about the Derwent Catchment were generally 25 to 40 mm, with the highest 70 mm at Interlaken. Up to 5 mm has been observed since 9AM and a further 10mm forecast for the Derwent Catchment during Sunday, with higher totals possible about elevated areas.
Strong and dangerous flows may be a hazard throughout the Derwent Catchment in areas that received heavy rainfall.

River Derwent above River Ouse:

Small river rises are expected in the upper reaches of the River Derwent above River Ouse during Sunday.

River Ouse:

Minor flooding may occur along the River Ouse.

The River Ouse at Ashton is currently at 0.89 metres and rising. The River Ouse at Ashton is expected to exceed the minor flood level (2.40 m) Sunday evening. The river level may peak between 3.30 and 3.60 metres Monday morning.
The River Ouse at Ouse may exceed the minor flood level (4.00 m) during Monday.

River Clyde:

Minor flooding is likely along the River Clyde.

The River Clyde at Bothwell is currently at 0.41 metres and steady. The River Clyde at Bothwell is likely to reach the minor flood level (2.00 m) Monday morning.
The River Clyde at Hamilton may exceed the minor flood level (2.40 m) Monday evening.

River Derwent above Meadowbank Dam:

Small river rises are expected in the upper reaches of the River Derwent above Meadowbank Dam during Sunday.

Tyenna River:

River rises are expected in the Tyenna River during Sunday.

Styx River:

River rises are expected in the Styx River during Sunday.

River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam:

Minor flooding may occur along the River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam.

The River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam is currently at 2.47 metres and steady. The River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam may exceed the minor flood level (4.10 m) Monday afternoon.
The River Derwent at Macquarie Plains is currently at 1.58 metres and steady. The River Derwent at Macquarie Plains may reach the minor flood level (4.00 m) Tuesday morning.

River Derwent around New Norfolk:

Minor flooding may occur along the River Derwent around New Norfolk.

The River Derwent at New Norfolk is currently at 0.32 metres and steady. The River Derwent at New Norfolk may reach the minor flood level (2.00 m) during Tuesday.

Since 9AM Saturday, rainfall totals about the Derwent Catchment were generally 25 to 40 mm, with the highest 70 mm at Interlaken. Further rainfall of 15 to 30 mm is forecast for the Derwent Catchment during Sunday, with higher totals possible about elevated areas.
Strong and dangerous flows may be a hazard throughout the Derwent Catchment in areas that received heavy rainfall.

Town water for Bushy Park and Glenora

A TREATED water supply will be provided at Bushy Park and Glenora following years of planning and community consultation. TasWater has announced that 80 per cent of property owners in the two towns have agreed to sign up and connect to the new service.

"TasWater formally proposed the schemes as an extension of its plan to upgrade the water supply at Gretna, providing fully treated water to all three towns," TasWater chief executive Michael Brewster said. "The Derwent Valley Council has previously committed $500,000 to the project in the form of a long term loan to TasWater, enabling us to waive the usual service introduction fee.'

Mr Brewster said he was very pleased to be able to confirm the expansion of the water service to the area, meaning residents would be able to tap into a fully treated water system meeting Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.

Construction of the pipelines will start in January with commissioning of the network expected to take place around the middle of 2017. “It’s estimated with the fixed service charge water usage and a payment program over four years to cover connection charges, new TasWater customers should be paying around $246 a quarter," Mr Brewster said.

While community support in Bushy Park and Glenora was strong, the same was not the case for Macquarie Plains, which was a late inclusion in the proposed scheme. “Support for TasWater extending the supply to Macquarie Plains fell well short of the required 80 per cent with just 22 per cent of the community indicating a willingness to join," Mr Brewster said.

Weather Situation

A low pressure system west of King Island currently extends a trough over Victoria to a second low developing over the Tasman Sea. These lows and trough combine with a high to the southeast of Tasmania to bring a strong and moist easterly flow over Tasmania. The trough will move south over Tasmania overnight, with the eastern low to then gradually become dominant tomorrow, forcing the western low to weaken as it move north tomorrow night, while a high moves over the Bight.

DAMAGING EASTERLY WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 80 km/h are likely to develop about northeastern Tasmania this evening, extending to the East Coast late. Winds are then expected to ease early Sunday, while increasing about the southeast, although winds are not likely to reach damaging strengths in Hobart.

HEAVY RAIN which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is expected about northeastern and central eastern Tasmania from this afternoon, extending to the South East, Midlands and Upper Derwent Valley overnight while easing about the northeast. 
24 hour totals of in excess of 50mm are likely overnight, with totals in excess of 100mm likely about elevated areas.

ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES which may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas are possible about the east and southeast coast Sunday morning, although not likely in Hobart.
Water levels could exceed the highest tide of the year by 20 centimetres during Sunday morning's high tide.
Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover. 
The radar currently shows a band of thunderstorms and heavy rain approaching from over Bass Strait. 

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Clear drains and gutters on premises prior to severe weather arriving.
* Do not walk, ride or drive through flood waters.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.

Sheep graziers warning

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the Upper Derwent Valley, North West Coast, Central North, North East, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 3:19 pm on Saturday 12 November 2016.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, very heavy rain and strong southeasterly winds are expected during Saturday and Sunday. Areas likely to be affected include the Central North, North East, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts and parts of the North West Coast forecast district. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 11pm Saturday.

Road Weather Alert for Tasmania

Slippery roads and reduced visibility in heavy rain will make driving conditions dangerous during Saturday and Sunday in parts of the North West Coast, Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.
