Road Weather Alert for Tasmania
for Upper Derwent Valley, North West Coast, Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 9:42pm on Sunday 2 July 2017.

Icy roads will make driving conditions dangerous during Sunday evening and Monday morning in parts of the North West Coast, Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

For information on any road closures, please contact your local council or the Police.

The next alert will be  issued by 5am Monday.

School holiday movie night

An earlier D'FAT movie night at Arthur Square. 

THE Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team (D'FAT) will hold another of its outdoor movie nights during the July school holidays.

This will be held at Arthur Square, New Norfolk, on July 15 in partnership with Tassie Open Air Cinemas. The move Sing will be screened at 7pm. Entry is free and food and drink will be on sale.

Icy roads will make driving conditions dangerous this evening and during Sunday morning in parts of the North West Coast, Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

For information on any road closures, please contact your local council or the Police.

The next alert will be  issued by 11pm Saturday.


Local Tasmania Police warnings as at 4.30pm: 

• Gordon River Rd – proceed with caution
• Highland Lakes Rd – proceed with extreme caution
• Lyell Hwy – Sorell Creek – proceed with extreme caution – heavy ice
• Lyell Hwy – Marlborough junction to Derwent Bridge and Ouse to Marlborough) – proceed with extreme caution

Sad loss on Glenora Rd

POLICE say ice on the road was a contributing factor in the collision that caused the death of a Derwent Valley woman on Glenora Rd at Plenty yesterday morning.

 

The vehicles involved were a Holden Commodore sedan and an unladen milk tanker. The driver of the tanker was uninjured but the Gretna woman driving the car was unable to be revived despite the best efforts of the emergency services including local volunteers.

"Preliminary investigation and examination of the scene indicates that ice on the road was a contributing factor," police said in a statement.

 

The Mercury has more including a video of the police press conference at the scene yesterday morning. The incident occurred around 8.30am and the road for investigations until about 4pm.

Condolences to the family and friends of all involved.

New Norfolk v Hobart

NEW Norfolk remains the only undefeated team in the competition after its win over the Robins last weekend, while Hobart went down to Huonville at the TCA Ground. The Eagles were not at their best against Brighton, but they got the job done, meanwhile the Tigers are looking to get some better form together after back-to-back loses at home.

The last time these teams met was on Good Friday at the TCA Ground where the Tigers had a lot of the play but were not able to put it on the scoreboard and were later blown away by the Eagles. The last time they met at Boyer was in last year's finals where New Norfolk went onto win but were knocked out of the finals the next week by Claremont after looking the better side most of the day.

It should be another win for the Eagles at home, but if the Tigers can play the same as they did earlier in the season they might just be able to keep it tight and have a chance of a big upset.

Road Weather Alert for Tasmania

Issued at 1:20 pm on Friday 30 June 2017.

Icy roads will make driving conditions dangerous during Friday night and Saturday across Tasmania. Black ice may be more extensive than recently experienced due to recent rainfall coupled with a very cold and long night.
