Snow covered roads will make driving conditions dangerous during Saturday and Sunday in parts of the North East, Western, Central Plateau, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

For information on any road closures, please contact your local council or the Police.

Two Eagles teams in finals today

IT'S SFL preliminary final day at North Hobart Oval today and the winner will win a date in the big one against Lindisfarne. The loser goes home and looks to 2018. The contestants are New Norfolk, everyone's premiership favourite throughout the year,  battling last year's premiers Claremont.

New Norfolk hadn't lost a game all season, but that changed last weekend despite a big final quarter against Lindisfarne at Boyer Oval. Meanwhile Claremont, with its backs against the wall and not wanting to go out in straight sets, beat Cygnet to set up today's big match at North Hobart.

Claremont has followed the same path as last year, with a big loss week one followed by a big win the next week. But does the story end here with a loss to New Norfolk? Can Claremont pull off a major upset and send New Norfolk out in straight sets?

Will New Norfolk shake off its first loss of the season, and go on to a big win over Claremont, and have a shot at the 2017 Premiership Cup?

The last time these two teams met in a final was last year's first semi-final when Claremont fought off the Eagles in the last quarter and booked a place in the preliminary final.

Frosts with temperatures down to -2 degrees are forecast for Saturday morning in parts of the North West Coast, Central North, Midlands, East Coast and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts

Please be aware: Temperatures at ground level can be many degrees lower than those recorded by standard weather stations, especially in calm conditions with clear skies.

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the Upper Derwent Valley, North West Coast, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 10:03pm on Friday 8 September 2017. 

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and fresh west to southwesterly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the South East forecast district and parts of the North West Coast, Midlands, East Coast and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Great first season for our female footballers

THE New Norfolk Under 17 girls’ football team has had a spectacular first season. From starting with just seven players at their first training run to a side of 31, this group of girl is the first all-female team fielded by the New Norfolk Junior Football Club.

Coached by former Eagles senior player Dean King, the team trained hard over the course of the season and improved out of sight. It played 12 roster matches in the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League Girls Youth competition for seven wins and finishing third on the ladder. The team then defeated Lindisfarne in the first semi-final before losing to Claremont by 12 points in the preliminary final.

The group certainly demonstrated what can be achieved when given the opportunity. Speaking after the preliminary final at the TCA Ground last Sunday week, coach King was all praise for his team. “What these girls have done in their very first season is just fantastic,” he said. “All the parents and I are so very proud of the girls — it’s been just fantastic to be their coach and I would like to do it all again next season.”

King's motto for the team was to always have fun and there was a positive atmosphere around the group all season, in particular the final few weeks. The team was very well organised by a great group of people and a big thank you must go to the following people that helped out on a regular basis during the season: coach Dean King, team manager Kathleen Triffett, assistant coach and runner Adrian Shaw, timekeeper Brendan Skelly and goal umpire David Bartels.

Special thanks also to Allison Rainbird, Michelle Oates, Meg Ward, Ross Triffett and all parents. Well done to all involved — to see women’s footy kick off in the Derwent Valley was very satisfying. From little things, big things grow and with the AFL Women’s League going from strength to strength, the sky is the limit for the girls.

Snow covered roads above 500 metres lowering to 200 to 300 metres Thursday evening, will make driving conditions dangerous in parts of the North West Coast, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the Upper Derwent Valley, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 9:56pm on Wednesday 6 September 2017.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong westerly winds are expected during Wednesday evening and Thursday. Areas likely to be affected include the East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts and parts of the Furneaux Islands, North West Coast and Midlands forecast districts.

There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions. The next warning will be issued by 5am Thursday.
