Shaw states his case

MAYORAL hopeful Scott Shaw has appealed to voters to support him as a candidate with vision and dedication. In a statement provided to the New Norfolk News, Councillor Shaw said he had been on the Derwent Valley Council for four years and had been deputy mayor for two years.

In particular, Cr Shaw said transparency and community consultation were two areas where the council needed to improve. "If elected as mayor I will promote and support more transparency and consultation with the community, as I feel keeping the community fully informed should be of paramount importance to the Derwent Valley Council," Cr Shaw said.

A local resident for 48 years, Cr Shaw said he had no business or employment obligations and as such would be able to be a full-time mayor. His previous employment history includes being a carpenter at the Boyer paper mill, a psychiatric nurse at Willow Court and Royal Derwent Hospital, and a real estate consultant.

His platform for election as mayor and councillor includes:

* Lobbying to keep the Derwent River open for pleasure craft and ferry traffic to increase the number of visitors to New Norfolk.
* Aggressively exploring opportunities for the reuse and rebranding of Willow Court.
* Investigating sustainable use of the council's own water storage for irrigating community areas.
* Providing ratepayers with an online quarterly council newsletter.
