Frescati house open this Saturday

THERE will be an open day at historic Frescati House in New Norfolk this Saturday as part of the Tasmanian Heritage Festival.

The Friends of Frescati will welcome visitors to the house and surrounding garden from 11am-3pm, providing a rare opportunity to see inside the building.

Frescati is a weatherboard house built by Colonial Secretary John Burnett in 1834. The Friends are particularly keen to collect memories of the house and its surroundings. Any photos and memorabilia will be particularly welcome.

Frescati is off The Avenue at Willow Court. Admission will be by gold coin donation. The Friends of Frescati also welcome new volunteers to help with the heritage garden around the house.

Targa to take a break in town

TARGA Tasmania returns to New Norfolk this Friday after an absence of several years. The 2015 event got under way earlier this week and will make its way from the West Coast this Friday for competitive stages at Tarraleah and Ellendale and lunch at New Norfolk.

Richmond St, Circle St and upper High St will be closed for several hours to allow the Targa fleet to regroup and have lunch before setting off for the final competive stage at Grasstree Hill.

The public will be able to mingle with Targa crews and take a close look at the participating cars while they are parked for the lunch break in New Norfolk.

Water talk is for Gretna, not Glenora

A MEETING being held at Gretna tomorrow (Thursday) night is for a discussion about that town's water only, the Derwent Valley Council has advised today. 

The council says it has been informed by TasWater that a separate meeting will be held in the near future to discuss the proposed water supply for nearby Bushy Park and Glenora.

Tomorrow night's meeting is being hosted by TasWater and the Central Highlands Council to talk to Gretna residents about progress on improvements to their water supply.

New Norfolk 32.17 (209) defeated Hobart 4.3 (27) at Boyer Oval

It was a case of a cricket score in football season as New Norfolk beat Hobart by 182 points at Boyer Oval on Saturday. The Tigers started by showing some glimpse of spark in the first quarter with two straight goals but still trailed the slick Eagles by a little over five goals at the first break. 

Following that it was one way traffic all day as Josh Clifford and Nathan Ross were the best for New Norfolk and Zeke Gardam led the goal tally with sixgoals. For Hobart it was all too much left to Shane Bradford again as he was their best in a very disappointing performance, as the Eagles flexed their muscles in Round 3. 

 

In the reserves New Norfolk easily accounted for Hobart by 82 points.

Great night at the HopFest

A LARGE crowd attended the seventh annual Hopfest hosted by the Derwent Valley Concert Band in the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall on April 18.

The theme was “Beer, Bratwurst and Brass” in a German Oktoberfest setting. Included was a three course meal co-ordinated by Maree Rieper and her team of volunteers, while a band made up of players from the DVCB kept everyone’s feet tapping and dancing to popular German tunes.

The Hopfest is the concert band's main fundraising event each year. The proceeds from this year’s event will help to purchase additional instruments and equipment for the Development/Training Band. The band thanks all donors and supporters.

Corner work starts at last

Works on Lees Corner yesterday.

THREE years after the Banjo's building was destroyed by fire, work has finally started to convert the site in central New Norfolk into a small park to be known as Lees Corner.

Three shops accommodated in the old Lee's Building  - also known as Fitzgerald's and Harris Scarfe - were destroyed in an electrical fire in the early hours of March 19, 2012. The building was quickly demolished but the site has remained off-limits behind a security fence. Despite receiving planning permission to rebuild on the site, the owners opted to relocate the bakery further down High St.

The Derwent Valley Council advises that the work to pull up the concrete slab and convert it to lawn will take about three weeks. The site will be leased to the council until such time as the owners choose to develop the site.

Anzac parade drew a crowd

FOLLOWING on from the big turnout for the Anzac Day dawn service in New Norfolk, attendances at the main parade and 11am service did not disappoint.

Parade marshall Dale Britten was pleased with the public response to both events. Numbers in the main parade were swelled by additional family members of veterans now departed, as well as a big representation from local schools and a group of local students who attend Dominic College.

New Norfolk RSL Sub-Branch president Harry Sherwood was master of ceremonies. He introduced guest speaker Wing Commander Dale Watson who gave an interesting address that weaved the experiences of New Norfolk soldiers into the Anzac story. He said 416 men and two women had enlisted from the New Norfolk district to serve in World War I. He spoke of privates Richard Jarvis and Arthur Anderson who enlisted very early in World War I, took part in the Gallipoli landing on April 25, 1915, and were killed that same day.

Music for the service was provided by the Derwent Valley Concert Band and the Derwent Valley Choir. Reverend Celia Hooker led the religious component of the service, having already done so at the Dawn Service and at Corumbene Nursing Home earlier in the morning. The list of the fallen from World Wars I and II was read by Harry Sherwood who later invited everyone to lunch at the RSL Clubrooms but said it would be difficult to accommodate everyone given the unprecedented size of the crowd.

ABOUT 1000 people attended the Centenary of Anzac Dawn Service in New Norfolk this morning, one of the biggest turnouts in many years.

Parade marshall Dale Britten said about 120 people had marched from the RSL Club  in George St, via Tank St, to the Cenotaph in Circle St, where a big crowd of onlookers was waiting. Mr Britten said there were about 1000 people in the audience and others said it was the biggest crowd they had seen at a dawn service.

HOBART has had a tough couple of games at the start of the 2015 season and things don’t look like improving as they travel to Boyer to take on the mighty Eagles tomorrow.

New Norfolk was back to its devastating best against Lindisfarne last weekend and it was no surprise that the victory coincided with Ross and Belcher being back amongst the best players for the men from Boyer.

New Norfolk Coach Caden Wilson has been the major goal-scorer for the Eagles and the Hobart defenders will have their work cut out limiting his opportunities.

Expect New Norfolk to prove way too strong in the end.

Prediction: New Norfolk by more than 100 points.

Player to watch: Shane Bradford (Hobart).

WHEN you come up against the premier side of competition for the last three years, the efforts of just one quarter, no matter how good, won’t be enough and a few lapses of concentration can be the difference. Lindisfarne found this all too real in their match against SFL powerhouse New Norfolk last Saturday at Anzac Park - starting the match well but being outgunned by an Eagles outfit with too much firepower.

The Two Blues frustrated the Eagles in the first quarter, limiting them to one goal but New Norfolk showed why they are regularly the top side of the competition as they rode on the back of four- and five-goal quarters in the second and third for their first win of the season.

Coach Caden Wilson led the way for the Eagles, kicking five and helped by the returning Roger Belcher and Nathan Ross as they ran out comfortable winners. Wilson when speaking to the Mercury post-match said the key was putting a run of goals on the board against a young Two Blues outfit. “At half-time we had a chat to the boys about if you put a couple of goals away against a young team like Lindisfarne, their heads drop and I was really pleased about how we played the second and third quarters” Wilson said.

Lindisfarne coach Daniel Willing was left to rue the third quarter, in which the Eagles kicked five goals in 12 minutes.

In the Reserves match it was the Eagles by 10 goals while in the Colts game New Norfolk went down to North Hobart.

Reader's letter: What's the address?

I HAVE a question in regard to the address of the new Woolworths premises. It has been advertised as being situated on the corner of George and Burnett Streets but surely it should be corner of George Street and The Avenue?

Being a resident in New Norfolk for some near 60 years, getting sites and street names and the history of development in the town correct is paramount for the future generations.

Crash blocks Hobart Rd

EMERGENCY services are at the scene of a crash on the Lyell Highway at New Norfolk. Police advise that the road is blocked in both directions at the Hobart Rd entrance to New Norfolk and motorists should avoid the area if possible.

3.45PM UPDATE: Police advise that the New Norfolk-bound lane of the Lyell Hwy is now open and traffic should be able to get through from Granton. Police now say the incident involved four vehicles but there are not believed to be any serious injuries. Traffic flow remains interrupted.

ABC Local Radio is broadcasting live from New Norfolk until 11am this morning where presenter Leon Compton is set up on the steps of the post office in High St.

Hayes fire under control

THE Tasmania Fire Service has downgraded its operations at the Hayes bushfire to patrols only. The 40 hectare vegetation fire has been burning for two days but is now under control. Check for updates here.

Scrub fire at Black Hills

SIX units from the Tasmania Fire Service are attending a vegetation fire in the Black Hills above New Norfolk. The incident was first reported at 4pm yesterday and the glow from the fire could be seen from the town late into the night.

The fire is covering an area of about 40 hectares and is being attended to by three heavy tankers, one medium tanker and two light tankers. There may be visible smoke and fire activity in the area for some time.

The TFS advises that the incident has no alert level and is being controlled. Click here for updates.

There are no planned burns by the forest industry in southern Tasmania today.

In addition to the Black Hills fire the Tasmania Fire Service has a number of registered planned burns/permit burns showing on its website.

Windy, but no warnings for us

DESPITE the windy weather being experienced in New Norfolk today, there are no current warnings for this area from the weather bureau. However there are current marine weather warnings, sheep grazier warnings and a bushwalkers weather alert in adjoining forecast districts so take care out there.

Lindisfarne v New Norfolk at Anzac Park tomorrow (Saturday) 2pm

BOUYED by their first-up win on the road against Brighton under lights, Lindisfarne will be keen to be back on home turf tomorrow. All that said, the Two Blues face one of the toughest tasks in SFL football and that is meeting New Norfolk on the rebound from a loss.

Lindisfarne will need to get first hands on the ball and show some outside run to be competitive against the reigning premier who will be expected to be hard at the contest this week.

Some big names were missing from the Eagles lineup last weekend so it may be a different 22 that start this week and provide some challenges for the Two Blues. Rohan Heron is tipped to be the man to try to hold Lindisfarne goal machine Tim Bracken.

Prediction: New Norfolk by 36 points.

Player to watch: Tim Bracken (Lindisfarne).

Work starts on new hardware store

MAJOR site works have started in preparation for the building of a new hardware in New Norfolk in the same week that the town's new Woolworths Supermarket has opened. Three Charles St shops and the New Norfolk Timber premises in Stephen St are being demolished to make way for a big new Mitre 10.

The developers are Williams Mitre 10, who have operated a hardware store in High St, New Norfolk, for more than 20 years. With frontages on Charles St and Stephen St, the new store will have a floorspace of 1200 square metres and will centralise the hardware, landscaping and timber businesses that have previously operated from separate locations.

The work is being carried out by Hutchinson Builders and is expected to take several months. The Stephen St buildings now being demolished were originally a fruit processing plant while the row of three shops on Charles St date to the late 1950s. Two nearby shops of a similar vintage and the Georgian house known as Sherrin's Cottage are not affected by the development.

Claremont 16.11 (107) d New Norfolk 14.10 (94) at Boyer
FOR the third year in a row, Claremont defeated New Norfolk in the opening roster match of the SFL season in what was effectively a re-match of the 2013 and 2014 grand finalists. But in contrast to previous wins the 13 point victory on Saturday was played out at the Boyer Oval fortress of the Magpies' fiercest rival.

Twice during the course of the game the men from Abbotsfield Park had to pull back the Eagles' lead, lifting prior to half-time to boot seven of the last nine goals to half time. Through Todd Kelly, Sean Salter and the outstanding Nathan Brown, the Pies edged in front and ex-University player Field Reeves finished the game as he started with a goal just prior to the final siren.

Claremont coach Kim Excell said the hard work would start now, with New Norfolk missing some key players. In response New Norfolk coach Caden Wilson said that despite the loss there were positives out of the game for New Norfolk. “It’s disappointing to lose at home but I’m proud that we stuck with them”, Wilson said when speaking to the Mercury.

In the Reserves contest Claremont was victorious by 45 points and in the Under 18 competition New Norfolk took on the Kingborough Tigers with the Tigers running out victors in the first game of the day.

Woolies welcomes first customers

PREMIER Will Hodgman was among the special guests at tonight's opening of the new Woolworths supermarket in New Norfolk.

Despite mixed messages about whether tonight's function or tomorrow's 8am media event is the official opening, a happy crowd braved the cool conditions at the new supermarket earlier this evening.

The Federal Member for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson, and Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans were also on hand as store manager Wendy Harris cut an impressive-looking cake.

Located right across the road from the previous Woolworths premises which are understood to have closed this evening, the new supermarket's opening celebrations will continue with a balloon artist and face-painting from 10am-3pm tomorrow (Wednesday) and a jumping castle and face-painting on Saturday from 10am-1pm.

This Saturday and Sunday the supermarket will be giving away a $25 gift voucher every 15 minutes between 10am and 2pm.

Get down to Woolies for opening night tonight

FAMILY, friends and customers are apparently welcome at a VIP night at the new Woolworths supermarket in New Norfolk tonight (Tuesday).

The $17.5 million development will be officially opened at 8am tomorrow (Wednesday), but the doors will be open from 6pm tonight for celebrations starting at 6.15pm including donations to New Norfolk Primary School and New Norfolk High School. "Customers are welcome to join in all the opening festivities," a publicist told major media outlets yesterday.

The store will be open from 7am to 10pm Monday to Sunday.

New Norfolk v Claremont at Boyer

THE Claremont Magpies will be on the road to Boyer to open their 2015 season campaign with a game against reigning premier New Norfolk in a game where both sides will be keen for the first points of the season. The match is at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday).

The Magpies continued to excite the competition in 2014, with form to challenge the dominant Eagles and appear to have recruited some handy players under coach Kim Excell and you would expect a high quality and disciplined performance first up. Reports suggest the Magpies have had a big pre-season, with plenty of numbers, and they should be very fit first up.

However, New Norfolk has an outstanding record at Boyer and this game will hold no fears. New Norfolk should continue to be the pacesetter this season under new coach Caden Wilson.

New Norfolk’s younger players would be expected to start sharing the load so as they don’t have to rely on names like Belcher, Ross and Thompson, who have historically been the match winners.

This should be a close encounter for most of the day but perhaps the reigning premiers may prove a little too strong towards the end of the game.

Festival debut for wartime play

Cast members at a rehearsal yesterday.

A NEW play based on characters and events in New Norfolk in 1915 will have its debut at the Derwent Valley Council Autumn Festival this Sunday.

Written by New Norfolk's Sharon Hutchinson, Australia Will Be There is set in a time when Australia was in full support of England fighting off the enemy hordes in Europe.

"Sergeant Major Wilberforce Shoobridge" will be rallying men to join up as volunteers to go and fight, while "Miss Coate", a former matron of the New Norfolk Asylum will be encouraging single young women to consider signing up to go overseas to serve as nurses. Other characters will include Mrs Dean and Mrs Shoobridge, president and treasurer of the New Norfolk Red Cross.

Session times are 11am and 1pm.  The play will also feature the Derwent Valley Choir singing the wartime anthem “Australia Will Be There” and other favourites of the era.

The play is the first in a series of productions planned for the next few years in line with developments that occurred during World War I.

Eagles colts kick off with a win

NEW Norfolk has started the 2015 Under 18 Colts League with an eight-point win over Sandy Bay at the TCA ground yesterday morning.

The Good Friday fixture saw the Under 18s competition kick off a week before the SFL season. The five other teams involved are Kingborough, North Hobart, Glenorchy, Lauderdale and Clarence.

Issued at 9.31pm on Wednesday 1 April 2015.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong southerly winds are expected during Thursday. Areas likely to be affected include the Midlands, Central North, South East and North West Coast forecast districts and parts of the Upper Derwent Valley, King Island, Furneaux Islands, East Coast and North East forecast districts. There is a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 5am Thursday.

Farewell Charlie Cawthorn

THE life of former New Norfolk businessman Charlie Cawthorn was celebrated at a largely attended funeral service at St Matthew's Anglican Church today. Born in 1923, Mr Cawthorn died at New Norfolk last Friday after a lifetime of service to the Derwent Valley community.

In addition to running his business as a cartage contractor he was a long-serving fire brigade and Lions Club volunteer among other activities and in later years he was highly visible as the voluntary caretaker of the rose garden in the centre of the Montagu St roundabout.

Condolences to Mr Cawthorn's family and friends.

Molesworth II's first premiership in 20 years

Southern Cricket Association 5th Grade premiers Molesworth II.

AFTER going down in the Fifth Grade qualifying final a few weeks back, Molesworth II turned the tables on the Knights to win its first Southern Cricket Association grand final on Saturday. With the game being moved to Richmond due to the sprinklers being left on at Cambridge Oval, it was reduced to a 35-over match.

Molesworth had first hit and made the excellent score of 6 for 211. Openers Jacksyn Mann 44 and Brad Ransley 34 put on an opening stand of 47 which set up the innings. When Ransley was run out, in came the in-form Jye County who hit a very good 39 putting on a superb 96 with Jacksyn Mann. Two wickets then fell on 151, but a very good 36 off just nine balls from Jake Foster (3x4s, 3x6s) lifted the total to 204. Chris Slater also did well late in the innings with 23 which included three nice 6s and Molesworth reached 6 for 211 off its 35 overs.

In reply, the Knights were going well at 3-73, but then lost regular wickets and were bowled out after 30 overs. In a fine bowling performance from the Molesworth boys, Brad Ransley took 3-10 off 5, while captain Sam Triffitt took 2-22 from 7. Chris Slater, Aaron Triffitt and Jye County all took top -order wickets with one each and in the end Molesworth ran out big winners by 95 runs.

After making 34 with the bat then taking 3-10 young Brad Ransley was awarded the man of the match medal. This was a excellent win to end what has been a great season from a young team. The last time Molesworth II won a grand final was back in the Derwent Valley Cricket Association in the season of 1995/96 when they defeated New Norfolk II in B-Grade. Congratulations coach to David Adams and all the players, officials and volunteers for the big turn around of the club on and off the field.

MOLESWORTH I defeated Montagu Bay by three wickets at Boyer Oval on Saturday in a match that was full of grand final nerves from start to finish. Montagu Bay won the toss and had first hit making 148 before being bowled out after 46 overs.

This low total was due to some very good bowling by the Molesworth attack. Larry Menzie and Nathan Eiszele both snared three wickets each, while Dean King with 2-16 from 10 was as good as any of his spells this season, and Martyn Evans picked up 1-29. At one stage the Sharks were 7 for 72, but recovered somewhat with a solid 70-run partnership from Roberts and Symington which then made the it a defendable total.

In reply, Molesworth was traveling well at 1 for 56 but then lost Brad Coppleman for 22 and and Jake King 14 and were then 3-56. Then it was the brothers Jamie and Daniel Adams at the crease, with Jamie adding a valuable 26 for his team. The wickets fell again and Molesworth found itself 7-110, still needing 39 and the run rate was creeping up. But Molesworth still had an ace up its sleeve and that ace was Nathan Eiszele who took to the bowlers from the word go, hitting three 4s and two good 6s making a match-winning 43no. At the other end was a limping Martyn Evans who did his all through the Eiszele cameo and remained 4no and the victory was Molesworth's.

To make Eiszele's efforts even more creditable, he hadn't played for the past five weeks due to an ankle injury. Put together 3-29 and a runout with his 43no and its no wonder he was named man of the match.

They say catches win matches and it couldn't have been truer on Saturday with Montagu Bay spilling five chances and missing a crucial runout late in the match. On the other hand, Molesworth put just one catch down and Mr Safe Hands Martyn Evans snared every opportunity taking three catches. It was a great win for Molesworth I which has now played in the past five Second Grade grand finals, winning the first one and now this one.

Captain Jamie Adams spoke very well during the after-match presentations, dedicating the season and two premierships to five-year-old Logan Tomlin who has leukaemia.
