Australia's state and federal governments are taking action to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Use the links above to source the latest advice about what you can do to protect yourself and others. Washing your hands for 20 seconds is one of the most effective forms of infection control. Do this after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; after close physical contact with anyone who is unwell; after using the toilet; before and after eating; before, during and after preparing food; and after feeding or touching a pet.

Christmas calendar

THERE'S a lot happening in the Derwent Valley in the lead-up to Christmas and the New Year. Here's a calendar of Christmas events coming up over the next few weeks. Additional items can be emailed to newnorfolknews@gmail.com




  • December 11 (Friday): New Norfolk Lions Carols by Candlelight, Tynwald Park 7.30pm. Free entry. Candles and program available by donation.
  • December 12 (Saturday): Rotary Club Christmas Market, Burnett St, New Norfolk, 10am-3pm.
  • December 12 (Saturday): New Norfolk Christmas Parade, High St, noon.
  • December 12 (Saturday): Speedway, Sorell Creek, gates open from 3pm.
  • December 14 (Monday): Derwent Valley Council annual general meeting, New Norfolk Courthouse, Circle St, 5.30pm.
  • December 14 (Monday): Derwent Valley Council monthly meeting, New Norfolk Courthouse, Circle St, 6.30pm.
  • December 19 (Saturday): Ellendale Carols by Candlelight, Tynwald Park. Games for all ages from 4pm, Christmas carols from 6pm. Barbecue and ice-cream van on site. Live band playing into the evening.
  • December 20 (Sunday): Holy Communion with carols, St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 9.30am.
  • December 20 (Sunday): Christmas Celebration at St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 7pm. Christmas play by the Junior Singers; Choral celebration by the St Matthews Singers; Community carols singalong and supper afterwards.
  • Christmas Eve December 24 (Thursday): St Peter's Catholic Church, Hillside Crescent, New Norfolk, Christmas Eve Mass at 6pm, featuring children's nativity.
  • Chrismas Eve December 24 (Thursday): Christmas eucharist with carols, St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 11pm.
  • Christmas Day December 25 (Friday): Christmas family eucharist, St Matthew's Anglican Church, Bathurst St, New Norfolk, 9.30am.
  • Christmas Day December 25 (Friday): Holy Communion, St John the Baptist Anglican Church, Ouse, 10am.
  • Christmas Day December 25 (Friday): Free Christmas lunch at the St Matthew's Church Hall, Bathurst St, New Norfolk. Lunch starts at noon and there will be a concert at 2pm.
