New Norfolk v Hobart

NEW Norfolk remains the only undefeated team in the competition after its win over the Robins last weekend, while Hobart went down to Huonville at the TCA Ground. The Eagles were not at their best against Brighton, but they got the job done, meanwhile the Tigers are looking to get some better form together after back-to-back loses at home.

The last time these teams met was on Good Friday at the TCA Ground where the Tigers had a lot of the play but were not able to put it on the scoreboard and were later blown away by the Eagles. The last time they met at Boyer was in last year's finals where New Norfolk went onto win but were knocked out of the finals the next week by Claremont after looking the better side most of the day.

It should be another win for the Eagles at home, but if the Tigers can play the same as they did earlier in the season they might just be able to keep it tight and have a chance of a big upset.

Crash on Glenora Rd

MOTORISTS are asked to avoid Glenora Rd in the Plenty area this morning where emergency services are responding to a serious two vehicle crash.

UPDATE: Sadly police are reporting that a woman has died in this accident. Condolences to family and friends of those involved.

Boyer Rd blackspot fixed

The new turning lane from Boyer Rd into Serenity Drive.

A DEDICATED right-turn lane at the intersection of Boyer Rd and Serenity Drive near Bridgewater is now complete, promising significantly improved safety at the known black spot. The $300,000 project was funded by the Federal Government.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Darren Chester MHR said the Black Spot Program was helping build safer roads throughout Tasmania with input from local motorists. “In total, 29 projects across Tasmania are receiving $4.2 million in funding in 2016–17 under the Black Spot Program, reflecting the Australian Government’s determination to make the state’s roads safer for all users,” Mr Chester said. “Crashes cause an enormous amount of strain on communities and emergency services, and upgrades like these projects will really help reduce crashes on our national road network.”

Tasmanian Senator Eric Abetz welcomed the Boyer Rd upgrade. “The new right-turn lane in Bridgewater has improved safety for all road users at the intersection, which has a history of crashes involving vehicles waiting to turn right from Boyer Road to Serenity Drive," Senator Abetz said. “The new lane will reduce the risk of rear-end collisions, as vehicles wishing to turn right from Boyer Rd to Serenity Drive now have a safe place to wait for a break in the oncoming traffic, clear of vehicles travelling through to New Norfolk.”

Police advice for winter driving

POLICE have issued a warning to motorists to slow down and drive to winter conditions following reports of ice, snow and rain throughout the state today.

“Rain and black ice make the roads slippery, vehicles can slide into danger and out of control if the speed  they are travelling at is too fast for the conditions,” Inspector John Ward said. “Be aware of your surroundings and look out for potential hazards in any extreme weather conditions.

Snow and ice can be expected in elevated areas, creating potentially hazardous road conditions. “If a road is closed, don’t drive around road closure signs, or move signs from the roadway," Inspector Ward said. " Roads are closed for the safety of the public and by ignoring these closures your actions can compromise the safety of yourself and other motorists.”

Tasmania Police have offered the following tips to help all road users to stay safe:

Motorists:
 Keep an eye on the Tasmania Police Community Alert page for the latest road closures
 Drive at a speed that feels safe and allows plenty of time to stop quickly and safely
 Be aware the roads can become slippery and could be like driving on ice - drive accordingly
 Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead – four seconds at least in poor
conditions.
 Don’t drive through water across the roadway - the road may be damaged underneath
 Concentrate 100% on driving
 Don’t allow distractions (i.e. mobile phones) to affect your judgement and reaction times
 Pay attention to road warning signs about hazardous conditions
 Drive with headlights on when visibility is poor
 Ensure tyres are in good condition and are correctly inflated
 Ensure windscreen is clean and the demister is working as it should
 Ensure front and rear wiper blades are in good condition

Pedestrians: 
 Wear light coloured clothing (reflective at night)
 Use crossings where possible and obey the signals
 Avoid drinking excessive amounts of alcohol as it slows reflexes and impairs judgement when
crossing roads

Bike riders: 
 Ensure your bike has front and rear lights
 If riding at night use flashing rear lights
 Wear reflective clothing to increase visibility
 Wear an approved safety helmet

Big footy reunion this Saturday

ONE of the biggest football reunions ever seen in Tasmania is set to happen at Boyer Oval this Saturday July 1. The reunion is open to all players and officials of all current and former clubs in and around the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands.

The person behind the idea is the New Norfolk District Football Club senior coach Matthew Smith. The Eagles' two-time premiership coach and three-time premiership player came up with the idea to bring all past and present football clubs together for one big reunion.

"I just thought it would be a great way to honour the many players and officials that have helped the game grow and to get them all together on the one day will be just terrific," Smith said. He is expecting well over 20 people to come along and to reunite with past team mates and rivals of yesteryear.

Among those who will be there whether rain, hail or shine are Tony Adams, Kevin Cooley and Ray Aitchison, who played over a combined total of around 900 games with eight different clubs for 10 premierships.

"I just think it's a great idea. I'm looking forward to rubbing shoulders with many of my former team mates and rivals," said Adams who played his last season with the now defunct North Derwent Football Club in 1992 at the age of 39,

Cooley played into his 40s and will be attending with his sons John and Robert who he had the pleasure of playing with and coaching before he retired.

Aitchison started his career with the New Norfolk Under 17s and went on to play for Hamilton and Upper Derwent in the 1960s, but retired at age 25. Since then he has researched and collated the history of past and present clubs and will be bringing along many photos, match reports and other memorabilia for all to see.

If you would like to attend the big day, come along to the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms at 12.30pm on July 1 from where Eagles coach Matthew Smith will lead you over to Boyer Oval to watch his charges do battle with the Hobart Tigers. Entry to the ground will be free to all that are attending the reunion.

The reunion will be held in two marquees situated near the players change rooms. Food will be provided in form of a barbecue and refreshments will be available over the bar. NEW Norfolk continued its undefeated start to the season by seeing off Brighton at Pontville on Saturday. On a chilly, mixed weather day, the Robins had some good patches during the game but none of that mattered as the Eagles were still too strong and kept them at bay throughout the day.

The Eagles sit atop of the SFL ladder clear of the pack, and although the pack is still on their heels, if the Eagles keep on their present path they could bring home the premiership cup. They still have the likes of Lindisfarne, Claremont, and the rest of the top five to prevail over, but the good form continues for the Eagles even though it's a one-week-at-a-time deal for them.

In other games Cygnet got a big win over Dodges Ferry; Huonville kept itself in the hunt by beating Hobart; and Claremont inflicted more pain on Sorell. As we enter the run home, the fight for finals places starts here.

Police seek crash witnesses

POLICE are calling for witnesses to a serious crash in New Norfolk last night.

At about 6pm on Friday, New Norfolk Police were alerted to a crash on Blair St at the intersection of Charlotte St, involving a white Holden utility and a homemade motorised bicycle.

"The 33-year-old male rider was taken to Royal Hobart Hospital by Ambulance Tasmania with serious head, chest and spinal injuries and is listed as critical but stable," police said in a statement. "The 33-year-old driver from Launceston also attended the RHH but was released shortly later."    

"Police are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen the manner of riding before the crash. Information can be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au or Crash Investigation Services on 13 13 44."

See the snow this Sunday

A SHUTTLE bus will ferry visitors to the snow at Mt Field tomorrow (Sunday). Waterfalls Cafe and Gallery has announced that a bus will operate on a trial basis tomorrow, running between the National Park visitor centre and the Lake Dobson car park.

The first run leaves at 9.30am and further services are planned to run hourly until 2.30pm. Tickets cost $10 per person and more information is available from the visitor centre by calling 6288 1149.

BRIGHTON faces a tough task this weekend as they host a red hot New Norfolk side who remained undefeated last week by easily accounting for last year's grand finalists, Lindisfarne.

The Robins will hope to keep themselves in finals contention and snap a losing streak by being the first team to beat the Eagles who have taken all before them before including the Robins earlier in the season.

New Norfolk will look to continue on its merry way after firming as sole premiership favourites, now sitting atop of the SFL ladder.

Highway closed at Rosegarland

TRAFFIC between New Norfolk and the west is being diverted via Glenora Rd due to a hazardous materials incident at Rosegarland. The Lyell Hwy in the area is closed and police urge everyone to stay at least 100 metres away while emergency services deal with the incident involving liquid oxygen.

State selection for young footballer

AFTER about eight months of trials, 14-year-old Jye Bearman of New Norfolk has recently been selected to represent Tasmania in the state Under 15s football team.

Bearman, who has grown up in the Derwent Valley, played much of his junior football with the NNJFC and after last season's premiership with the New Norfolk Under 16s, the centre man now plays with the Glenorchy Under 18s where he hopes to give himself a chance of being drafted to an AFL team some day.

With his selection in the state team, Bearman will head to Western Australia to play five games with the team which will do battle with the country's best from July 22-29. The trip comes with expenses such as accommodation, airfares and match fees and with just a month until they fly out it doesn't leave much time, so Jye's mum Jeanette Bowerman has set up an online fundraiser to help ease the burden. Interested donors can alternatively phone Jeanette on 0407 233 862.

In the meantime, this young athlete is training three nights a week and every second Saturday with both his Glenorchy and state teams. All the best to you and the team Jye, we will be looking forward to following your matches.

Returning Rosehaven relocates

FILMING for the second season of the ABC-TV comedy series Rosehaven has started in recent weeks but the location of the show's main set has moved from New Norfolk to Oatlands.

In Rosehaven's debut season last year, a then-vacant shop in New Norfolk served as the location of the real estate agency at the centre of the show's storyline. The set was so realistic that some visitors to the town thought it was a genuine business. The shop at 55 High St is now occupied by a clothing business.

Southern Midlands Council general manager Tim Kirkwood recently announced that parts of the eight-episode second season would be filmed in and around Oatlands and confirmation had been received that the location of the real estate agency featured in the series would be in Oatlands.

Moving on: Fictional McCallum Real Estate has moved from
High St, New Norfolk, to High St in Oatlands.

Producers have announced that the show will be filmed "in and around Hobart and the Huon Valley". It is understood that a house at Lachlan will continue to feature. 

The State Government will contribute $300,000 to the cost of producing season two, via Screen Tasmania. Seasons one and two have been picked up by Sundance TV to screen in the US later this year.

Country cricketer Cunningham's class act

Colin Cunningham

WHEN you've clocked up more than 50 years of service to the sport you love, you would be forgiven if you decided to give it away, but that's not Colin Cunningham's way.

From club level to association level and even umpiring, the Gretna veteran has done it all when it comes to the game of cricket over the last 54 years.

In recognition to his outstanding achievement, Cunningham was presented with a framed certificate and pin from Cricket Australia and Cricket Tasmania at the end of the last season. The award was presented at the Gretna Cricket Club's annual dinner and trophy night.

Colin's contribution to the game is outstanding and has record includes the following:

• Gretna Cricket Club for 19 seasons: 1963/64 to 1965/66; 1967/68 to 1968/69; 1988/89 to 1998/99 and 2014/15 to the present. This includes service as a committeeman, premiership captain and playing in six premierships.
• New Norfolk Cricket Club (1966/67), playing one season in the then TCA.
• Prahan Cricket Club in Melbourne for one season (1970/71) where he trained with VFL/AFL great Kevin Sheedy who was also at the club.
• Glenora Cricket Club for three seasons (1969/70 and 1971/72 to 1972/73) playing in one premiership. The club then merged with Ellendale to become the Glenora/Ellendale Cricket Club where Colin had 16 seasons (1973/74 to 1987/88 and 2000/01) and served as president, secretary and captain, played in three premierships and was made a life member.
• Colin was president of the Derwent Valley Cricket Association for 17 seasons (1989/90 to 2005/06) and was made a Life Member in 1985.
• He played Country Week for many years where he played in the DVCA No.1 team that won the 1973 Country Week Southern Championship, captained by the late Lyn Harris.
• Administrator and coach of the Derwent Valley Junior Cricket Association for nine seasons (1993/94 to 2001/02).
• Umpired in the Derwent Valley Cricket Association for three seasons (2003/04 to 2005/06) and the Southern Cricket Association for nine seasons (2006/07 to 2014/15).
• In 2000, Colin was awarded the Australian Sports Medal at a function at Bellerive Oval for his contribution to cricket.
• Grand finals played in (DVCA): One A-Grade premiership, nine B-Grade premierships and five B Grade runners-up.

Colin has been a proud cricket volunteer and for many years he served at both club and association level in the same seasons. What also makes his contribution all the more outstanding is that he has also served on the Gretna Fire brigade as volunteer for the past 30 years. Colin has held the position of brigade chief since 1987 and junior co-ordinator since 1996, guiding and training the brigade's younger members.

During the 1980s, Colin gave about six years service with with the former Upper Derwent Football Club where he was secretary for two seasons and also played a few games. In more recent times
Colin was president of the Bushy Park Hall Committee for 10 years and is currently the vice-president.

Colin's father, the late Les Cunningham, played for Gretna from 1927 through to the 1960s including many premierships and mostly as captain. Les was one of the Derwent Valley's greatest cricketers, scoring more than over 50 centuries and also played more than 25 years of Country Week for the Derwent Valley Cricket Association.

Les and Colin both played with Gretna during the 1960s, opening the batting together and also played in the 1964/65 DVCA A-Grade Premiership together. Colin's sons, Craig and Jason, have also played for Gretna with Craig recently playing his 200th club game. Colin's grandson Josh Farrow has also played for Gretna, coming up through the juniors.

Colin's first memory of starting out his cricket career with the Gretna Cricket Club was riding his bike from the Woolpack Straight at Gretna down to the Gretna War Memorial Oval to training where he would field mostly and occasionally get a bowl. After one of Colin's early matches with Gretna, Second XI captain Billy Wilson-Haffenden brought a tray of glasses of raspberry cordial out of the National Park Hotel for Colin and the other boys as they were too young at the time to go into the bar.

The last game Colin played was on January 27, 2001, just a month before the left-hander turned 52. He  scored 60 runs including eight fours and also took a catch while playing for the now defunct Glenora/Ellendale Cricket Club. Colin was a good right arm medium pace bowler in his early days and later reverted to off spin.

Colin still volunteers his time to cricket, being involved with the Gretna Cricket Club as senior coach and also helps out with many jobs such as the running of the canteen and match day duties. Colin is a respected member not only with in the cricket family, but also in the local community.

Well done and congratulations Colin, you certainly have earned this recognition.

Council meeting this Thursday

THE monthly meeting of the Derwent Valley Council will be held at 6.30pm this Thursday at the courthouse in Circle St, New Norfolk. The meeting is open to the public and the agenda documents are available online and in hardcopy from the council chambers. 

Any resident or ratepayer wishing to ask a question or make a statement can do so in writing using a form available from the council chambers which has to be submitted to the general manager 10 minutes before the start of the meeting.

Arts project delivers school seating

ARTIST Wayne Hudson’s Arc Bench has recently been installed into the newly-landscaped area in the grounds of New Norfolk High School.

The bench has been designed to act as a focal point in the central space and be a catalyst for students and staff to gather and where formal/informal learning can take place.

Treated wooden slats have been attached to a curved metal frame of the bench. The ends are made from cast concrete which has been embedded with coloured glass and then polished.

This $19,000 Arts Tasmania project forms part of the school's redevelopment which included the demolition of the original school building to make way for the new landscaped area.

New Norfolk cricketers rewarded

Chris Ashcroft and Nathan Heron were awarded life
membership of the New Norfolk Cricket Club.

STAR recruit Jason Rigby cleaned up at the New Norfolk Cricket Club's annual trophy presentations and dinner, taking home a total of seven awards including the Lyn Harris Memorial Trophy for the first grade best allrounder/club champion. Rigby won the award with a total of 963 points, 236 clear of runner-up Nathan Eiszele on 727 points.

Rigby's bag of awards comes on the back of the Red Caps announcement that the talented cricketer will be club's senior coach for 2017/18. Paired with the announcement of Seb Wishart as senior assistant coach and premiership league recruit Matthew Bowden (ex Lindisfarne) as development coach, the Red Caps are in for another big season.

More than 70 players, members and guests attended the evening which was held at the NNDFC on May 14. Another highly regarded award is the Charlie Eiszele Perpetual Trophy for best club person which was won Tammy Hill, one of the club's most dedicated workers. Tammy is the wife of club president Jamie Hill and they make a great team.

Spill closes Rocks Rd

POLICE say Rocks Rd/Boyer Rd is likely to be closed for up to another two hours while emergency services attend to a chemical spill on the road between New Norfolk and the waterskiing club.

The incident was first reported at12.05pm when the New Norfolk Fire Brigade dispatched several crews to assess the situation. The fire service says the unnamed chemical leaked from a container as it was being transported. An exclusion zone is in place and there is no threat to the community.

Motorists and members of the public should avoid the area and refer to the Tasmania Police website and Facebook page for information on road closures.
