Severe Weather Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS and HEAVY RAINFALL

For people in Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East, East Coast and parts of Central Plateau and Midlands Forecast Districts.

HEAVY RAIN ACROSS EAST AND SOUTHEAST TASMANIA FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, WITH DAMAGING WINDS ALONG THE EAST COAST

Weather Situation: A low pressure centre near northeast Tasmania is bringing heavy rain and strong winds to parts of the east and southeast of the state. The low moves away from Tasmania during Saturday evening.

HEAVY RAIN which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is possible across parts of eastern and southeastern Tasmania during Friday night and Saturday about the east and southeast.

Throughout EASTERN Tasmania, widespread heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding is possible until Saturday afternoon. Generally, 40 to 80 mm of rainfall is possible during this time with higher rainfall totals about elevated areas.

Throughout SOUTH EAST Tasmania, including HOBART, heavy rain that may lead to flash flooding is possible until Saturday morning. During this time, 30 to 50 mm of rainfall is possible throughout the area, with higher rainfall totals about elevated areas.

DAMAGING EAST to SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts of around 90 to 100 km/h are possible along the eastern coastal strip of Tasmania between Swan Island to Maria Island. Winds ease by early Saturday afternoon.

Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, Orford, Bothwell, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover.

The highest observed rainfall so far has been at Gray, with 100 mm since 9 am.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Clear drains and gutters on premises prior to severe weather arriving.
* Do not walk, ride or drive through flood waters.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5am Saturday.

Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

Road Weather Alert for Tasmania
for Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Reduced visibility in heavy rain will make road conditions dangerous during Friday in parts of the Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts, and during Saturday in parts of the North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

The road weather alert for the North West Coast and Western forecast districts has been cancelled, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further alerts will be issued if necessary.

Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the King Island, Furneaux Islands, Central North, North East, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Issued at 10:08 pm EST on Friday 6 September 2019.

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and showers and strong southerly winds are expected during Friday and Saturday. Areas likely to be affected include the Central North, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts and parts of the King Island, Furneaux Islands, North East and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The Warning to Sheep Graziers for the North West Coast forecast district has been cancelled.

The next warning will be issued by 5am Saturday.

Initial Minor Flood Warning for the River Derwent

Issued at 4:25 pm EST on Friday 6 September 2019

Flood Warning Number: 1

Minor flooding may develop in the Clyde and Ouse Rivers and in the Lower Derwent during Saturday.

Rain with a chance of thunderstorms during the remainder of Friday and into Saturday.

Rainfall totals of 40 to 80 mm are expected during Saturday across eastern Tasmania with totals in excess of 100 mm in elevated areas.

Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard over the next couple of days

River Derwent above River Ouse:

With current catchment conditions in the Derwent River above its junction with the Ouse River and using forecast rainfall significant stream rises are likely late Friday into Saturday and areas of flooding may develop during Saturday

River Ouse:

Minor flooding may occur along the River Ouse.

The River Ouse at Ashton is currently at 0.52 metres and steady. With forecast rainfall the River Ouse at Ashton may reach the minor flood level (2.40 m) during Saturday.

With forecast rainfall the River Ouse at Ouse may reach the minor flood level (4.00 m) during Saturday into Sunday.

River Clyde:

Minor flooding may occur along the River Clyde.

With forecast rainfall the the River Clyde at Bothwell may exceed the minor flood level minor late Saturday.

The River Clyde at Hamilton may reach the minor flood level (2.40 m) during Sunday.

River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam:

Minor flooding may occur along the River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam.

The River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam may reach the minor flood level (4.10 m) during Saturday.
