Severe Weather Warning

for damaging winds
for people in the Central North, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Issued at 6:06am on Wednesday 16 October 2013.

Damaging winds expected to develop during today over much of Tasmania.

Weather Situation

An intense low pressure system will pass well to the southwest of Tasmania today with an associated cold front to cross the state from the west this evening.

Damaging winds from the northwest of around 50 km/h with peak gusts of up to 110 km/h are forecast for the Western, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley, South East , North East, Central Plateau and Midlands forecast districts as well as inland parts of the Central North District. Motorists are advised that the gusty winds will make driving conditions dangerous.

Winds gusts of 102 km/h have been recorded at Maatsuyker Island in the past 6 hours.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:

• Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
• Keep clear of fallen power lines.

The next warning will be issued by 11am Wednesday.

Have your say on Willow Court plans

A DEVELOPMENT application has been lodged with the Derwent Valley Council for the necessary works to prepare the Willow Court Barracks precinct to be opened to the public early next year. The committee led by David Llewellyn is focusing its energy on the conservation of the barracks building, redevelopment of Bronte House and the establishment of a community area within the heritage precinct.

The development application is on display at the Derwent Valley Council for public comments, which close on October 21. A contract for the works has been awarded to Xsquared Architects in association with Inspiring Place landscape architects and the Centre for Heritage at Oatlands.

The minor flood warning for the lower River Derwent has now been finalised.
River levels below Meadowbank dam remain high and are currently below the minor flood level and easing slowly.
Most storages in the Derwent system are full with many dams on spill.
Rainfall forecast across the Derwent catchment over the next few days is expected to produce renewed rises to the minor flood level by Thursday.

Strong river rises are being observed about the lower reaches of the River Derwent with Minor Flooding expected to develop during Monday morning.
Most storages in the system are now full with many dams on spill.
No significant rainfall totals are expected today, but more rain is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday across the upper Derwent catchment.

River level rises with levels expected to remain below their Minor flood levels during Monday.

Junior cricket training update

THE Gretna Cricket Club's junior training will now take place on Fridays starting at 4.30pm. Junior cricket is open to both boys and girls and Gretna is in need of more junior players to help field teams in the Under 13s and Under 15s. If you wish to join one of the teams, just turn up to training this Friday at Gretna or call Wade Gleeson on 0429 704 677. The first roster match is on Sunday, November 3.

Tree across Boyer Rd

POLICE advise that there is a tree across Boyer Rd at Dromedary and have asked that all motorists slow down in the area. Police are in attendance and traffic can get around the obstruction.
