Severe Weather Warning for damaging winds
for people in the Upper Derwent Valley, Central Plateau, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 4:02pm on Tuesday 5 August 2014.

For damaging north-west to westerly winds southeast of a line from Eddystone Point to Strathgordon for Wednesday.

Weather Situation
A cold front will approach the state from the south-west during Wednesday and cross the state Wednesday evening.

Damaging north-west to westerly winds to 55km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are forecast for the South East, Upper Derwent Valley, Midlands and East Coast forecast districts, southern parts of the Western and Central Plateau forecast districts, and eastern parts of the North East forecast district from late Wednesday morning. Gusts may reach 110km/h about southern Tasmania during Wednesday afternoon. Damaging winds are expected to ease during Wednesday evening. Wet ground due to recent heavy rain may make trees fall more easily in windy conditions.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:

• Supervise children closely
• Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment
• Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
• Manage pets and livestock
• Be prepared in case of power outages
• Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving
• Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice

Volunteers to the rescue at Mt Field

VOLUNTEERS came to the rescue of a French tourist in the snow at Mt Field National Park yesterday. Mt Mawson Ski Patrol, Oldina Ski Club members and the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association co-ordinated the rescue and provided support to a 20-year-old French man who had collapsed in the snow while walking from Lake Dobson to the Lake Seal lookout.

They made contact with Tasmania Police Search and Rescue and Ambulance Tasmania at about 3pm and the monitored the patient while waiting for the rescue helicopter to arrive. A team of volunteers later used a rescue sled to transport the man up to landing site on the ski fields from where he was flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a stable condition.

THE Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service reports that the Lake Dobson Rd at Mt Field National Park is open to four wheel drive vehicles and two wheel drives fitted with chains.

The road in the alpine area is extremely icy, and must not be attempted by two wheel drives without chains. See the PWS Facebook page for updates.

The Southern Tasmanian Ski Association will operate its ski tow today. Visit its website website for updates.

How do you get to the snow? Follow the signs to Mt Field National Park. Once inside the park you take the Lake Dobson Rd (to the left of the the visitor centre) which is a gravel road up through the forest. Drive to the end of the road (about 30 minutes) and you will arrive at a large gravel car park next to Lake Dobson. For some people, that's enough of a snow experience. Others wishing to ski can walk up the track to the ski village, which takes another 25-30 minutes. Warning: Lake Dobson Rd is open to 4WD vehicles and 2WD cars are to be fitted with snow chains.

Icy roads will make driving conditions dangerous during Sunday in parts of the North West Coast, Central North, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

RENEWED WARNING

MINOR FLOOD WARNING FOR RIVER DERWENT

Flood Warning Number: 5

Minor flooding has developed about New Norfolk early Friday afternoon with high river levels expected to continue overnight Friday.

Minor flooding continue throughout the middle reaches of the River Derwent and in the lower reaches below Meadowbank Dam following heavy rain across the catchment since Tuesday.

Strong rises have been observed in most tributaries of the River Derwent. River levels will remain high during Friday. Storages in the Derwent system are quite full with several dams currently spilling.

No further significant rainfall is forecast overnight Friday into Saturday, with snow falling about elevated areas. Snow melt is expected to maintain high river levels over the weekend, with renewed rises possible.

Derwent above Ouse River

Strong river rises have been recorded in the majority of the upper River Derwent. Minor flooding in the River Derwent at Glendhu peaked overnight Thursday near the Moderate flood level (5.0 metres) and is easing slowly. Minor flooding to continue easing during Friday.

Ouse River

Minor flooding developed in the Ouse River at Ashton overnight Thursday, with a peak of about 2.4 metres. River levels have now fallen below the Minor Flood Level and will continue to ease slowly during Friday. River levels are expected to remain below the Minor Flood Level at Ouse township.

Clyde River

Small river rises remaining below the Minor Flood Level.

Below Meadowbank Dam

High levels of Minor flooding expected to continue in the Lower River Derwent below Meadowbank Dam overnight Friday. River levels throughout the lower reaches are currently easing slowly. Strong river rises were observed about Macquarie Plains on Friday. The river level peaked above the Minor Flood Level around 4.6m midday Friday and is now easing.

Tyenna River

River levels Tyenna River will continue to ease during Friday into Saturday. Localised flooding in adjacent creeks and surrounding low lying areas in the lower Tyenna River about Westerway may continue overnight Friday into Saturday due to high levels in the Derwent River.

Styx River

River levels in the Styx will continue to ease overnight. Localised flooding in adjacent creeks and surrounding low lying areas in the lower Styx River around Bushy Park and Glenora expected to continue overnight Friday into Saturday due to high levels in the River Derwent.

New Norfolk

The River Derwent exceeded the Minor Flood Level at New Norfolk early Friday afternoon, peaked about 2.1m and is currently easing. Renewed river rises up to the Minor Flood Level are still possible overnight Friday due the tidal variation at New Norfolk. Localised flooding in adjacent creeks and surrounding low lying areas of the River Derwent is expected to continue over the weekend.
