Frost Warning
for the Midlands, Central North and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts
Issued at 10.16pm on Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

Frosts with temperatures down to -1 degrees are forecast for Thursday morning in parts of the Midlands, Central North and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts.

Please be aware: temperatures at ground level can be many degrees lower than those recorded by standard weather stations, especially in calm conditions with clear skies.

No further warnings will be issued for this event.

New Norfolk defeats Dodges Ferry

Dodges Ferry v New Norfolk at Shark Park

REIGNING SFL champion New Norfolk had a convincing win last Saturday, belting Dodges Ferry at Shark Park by 93 points. Coach Jon Murray tuned the Eagles' motor at half time, with the last half of the game delivering 17 goals to five in New Norfolk’s favour.

Michael Thompson and Zeke Gardam led the scoring for New Norfolk with four majors, whilst Brett Booth snagged three goals. Nathan Ross and Shayne Moles both played excellent games.

Dodges Ferry showed some signs of good football but still need to lift a little more. For Dodges Ferry, Jason Hyland and Nathan Donoghue were the best players and Ricky Martin led the way on the scoreboard with four goals.

In the Reserves game earlier in the day New Norfolk were clear victors by 54 points and also took out the Colts by 39 points against the home town Sharks.

New Norfolk cricketers celebrate

THE New Norfolk Cricket Club held its trophy night at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms on April 20. There was a good roll up of players, members and officials who had an enjoyable night.

New Norfolk I player Stewart Rice had a great season and took home a number of trophies including the best all-rounder award. New Norfolk II player Josh Walsh stole the limelight and took home a staggering eight trophies. He too won the all-rounder award.

Another highlight was the awarding of life membership to Sharyn Rice who has been a great contributor to the club over many seasons and thoroughly deserves this award. Having watched her husband Stewart play for many seasons, Sharyn now has two sons playing with the club as well.

On the field the club had a great season. New Norfolk I captained by Glen Williams finished third in 2nd Grade and New Norfolk II captained by Stephen Nichols finished fifth in 5th Grade. The club will look forward to season 2013-14 with confidence. Well done to all trophy winners.

"Nothing of concern" in video

THE state's anti-discrimination commissioner had viewed the Willow Court paranormal documentary and found nothing of concern, this month's Derwent Valley Council meeting was told. Approved for release two months ago, the film was forwarded to the Tasmanian anti-discrimination commissioner following an expression of concern by her federal counterpart.

Produced by the Australian Paranormal Investigation Unit (APIU) the film documents a paranormal investigation at the Willow Court historic site. Mr Mackey said he had been advised by the council's solicitor that there was nothing in the documentary of concern to the anti-discrimination commissioner.

Mr Mackey told the council meeting that a memorandum of understanding would be developed with APIU to document the terms of the release.

HopFest a roaring success

A GREAT time was had at the Derwent Valley Concert Band's annual HopFest on Saturday night, with about 100 people in attendance at the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall.

The night celebrated the music of the 1920s-40s, played and sung by members of the band with great enthusiasm. Photos and a video from the night can be seen here.

Paul Beresford reports: Saturday was certainly not "The loneliest night of the week" at the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall where Jewel and myself plus about 150 others enjoyed a "Big Band Boogie 1920s-40s style" evening.

Music by members of the Derwent Valley Concert Band and visiting musicians and singers kept everyone tapping their toes and dancing till late in the night. Lessons were given in the Charleston and other dance styles and the happy crowd enjoyed great canapes followed by  a selection of hot main courses and a wonderful variety of desserts. Yours truly got into trouble from Jewel because I spilled my bread and better pudding down the front of my dinner shirt!

Thanks to the members of the Derwent Valley Concert Band  for the fantastic efforts that went into making this a great night out in the valley.
