BANJO'S Bakery now has a choice of locations for its new premises in New Norfolk. The Derwent Valley Council has issued a second permit to the bakery chain, this time covering the former Retravision premises at 20 High St. Earlier this month it was announced that a permit had been issued for a bakery in a former supermarket at 38 High St. Both are prime sites in New Norfolk's central business district.
In other business news, renovations are being carried out in the recently-closed Country Florals Florist at 33 High St. It is understood that this will be home to two small businesses, offering giftware and electrical goods.

Under 13 lost to New Town.
Under 12 Red won 2-0 against Dominic. Ryan Browning scored both goals.
Under 12 Black had a 2-all draw with Derwent.
Under 9 won 3-2 against Brighton.
Under 8 lost 4-1 to Holy Rosary Blue. Ostyn Wilton was the goal scorer.
Under 7 Red won by forfeit over Brighton.
Under 7 Black won 4-1 against Brighton with all players having a good game. Bree Browning kicked two goals.
Under 6 Red and
Under 6 Black played good games against Brighton and Metro. For Under 6
Black it was a rare night game at Tynwald Park.

Junior season nears its end

THIS week will see the last games of the season for the Under 8, 9 and 10 footballers so if you are wanting to see the future stars of tomorrow, check where they play and support these young Eagles this weekend. New Norfolk v Brighton
NEW Norfolk continued its dominance of the competition and over neighbour Brighton when they thrashed them by 113 points last Saturday, 24.17 (161) to 7.6 (48). The Eagles started strongly and dominated around the stoppages and had too much strength and class for the opposition as they cruised to a handy 24-point lead a the first change. The visitors battled hard but could not match their more fancied rivals. The second term was a similar affair as New Norfolk’s defence was super, keeping Brighton to only four goals. The game was practically over at half-time as the home side led by 44 points.
The Eagles continued their hunger for big wins, slamming on another 13 goals to race away to a percentage-boosting win, leaving Brighton to regroup for this weekend's important clash at home. Best players for the Eagles were plenty with Wardlaw, Horne, Belcher and Clayton outstanding whilst key forward Thompson moves in on the ton, kicking a lazy seven to move to 78 goals with five rounds to play. Better players for the struggling Robins were Willing, Delaney, Boucher and Hope as they remain two points out of the top six.
Huonville v Claremont
HUONVILLE are back in form and making a late bid to play finals football after they recorded easily their best win of the season and moved to eighth spot on the ladder after defeating finals-bound Claremont by 64 points, 19.9 (123) to 10.19 (79). The first term was a high-scoring and even affair as both sides seemed to find plenty of space but the home side was more inaccurate kicking for goal. Huonville grabbed a vital 14-point lead over the unlucky Magpies. The second term was a similar affair with the Magpies missing easy opportunities and every time the Lions went forward they scored a goal. They had fewer scoring shots but increased their lead to 20 points and an upset loomed as the visitors were very frustrated.
The third term was an even affair but Claremont threw everything at the Lions who held firm and then kicked away in the last term to record a confidence-boosting victory. Best players for the impressive Huonville were Lange, Reynolds, Chivers and Wallace whilst Paul continued his good recent form kicking five goals. Better players for an inaccurate Claremont were Fewkes, Daly, Sweeney and Smith whilst Curtain kicked four goals in a lone hand up forward.

DODGES Ferry remain in third spot on the ladder after easily defeating a gallant but outclassed Sorell by 58 points, 18.15 (123) to 9.11 (65).

Junior football breakfast
ON a cold and foggy morning last Saturday, a large number of New Norfolk Junior Football Club players from the Under 9s through to Under 15s came together for the annual club breakfast at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms. Two special guests spoke to the future stars of tomorrow. They were former NNDFC champion and coach Hedley Thompson and former NNDFC player David Cornelius, father of Aaron Cornelius who was drafted from Glenorchy to the Brisbane Lions in the AFL.
David spoke of Aaron's career so far and what was required to play at the highest level. This was a great experience for the young players and I'm sure this inspired all players to aim to play the best that they can. David played about 130 games for New Norfolk and was a member of the 1982 premiership side. He told me later that Aaron has said that later in his career he would like to coach the team his Dad played with. I'm sure the NNDFC would accept Aaron with open arms.
A big thank you to the New Norfolk Old Players Association and the ladies for putting on such a great breakfast. This is a great event on the calendar each year, it is much appreciated. Lastly a big thank you also to Michael Graham for his efforts in organising the breakfast. Well done mate, you did it well.

Archaeologist for Willow Court
A PORT Arthur archaeologist is the latest appointee to the Willow Court Conservation Committee. The appointment of Dr Jane Harrington as the committee's second expert member was announced by chairman David Llewellyn at his meeting with the Friends of Willow Court and Frescati last week. Mr Llewellyn said it was taking a little longer than expected to fill all the positions on the new committee and advised that secretarial support was now being provided by the Derwent Valley Council in the person of general manager Stephen Mackey. He confirmed that there would be no payments to committee members but said their legitimate out of pocket expenses would be covered.
Mr Llewellyn said he was pleased that Port Arthur Historic Site heritage archaeologist Jane Harrington had agreed to join the committee, describing her as the best person to fill the role. He said Dr Harrington and Port Arthur Historic Site CEO Stephen Large had recently visited Willow Court. This leaves a vacancy for one more expert on the committee and Mr Llewellyn said he was looking for a person with entrepeneurial skills to help raise funds for Willow Court.
Addressing the matter of community representation on his committee, Mr Llewellyn said he had received nominations from the Friends of Frescati and Friends of Willow Court but no decision had been made. It was likely that a member would be selected from one Friends group and a proxy from the other.

New Norfolk v Brighton
NEW Norfolk are back at home and will not be taking this game lightly as they still need to win to hold on to top spot as they host an improving Brighton who usually lift for the neighbourly clash. The Eagles had a real battle last weekend before eventually defeating Dodges Ferry, but will need to improve and get a more even team contribution and not rely on too few players. The Robins have been down in recent weeks but really performed strongly in a narrow loss to second-placed Lindisfarne and if they can reproduce that form for a full four quarters they are a chance for an upset victory.
Brighton need to take control of the midfield battle, win the clearances and attempt to flood back to try to stop their key forwards from getting a one out contest. The Eagles need a good start to prevent the visitors from getting any momentum and boost in confidence. New Norfolk also need quick goals to put some scoreboard pressure on Brighton. New Norfolk have too much to play for and with a poor performance last weekend they should be fired up to play their best football and take the points. It will be interesting if Brighton can give them a real fright for most of the day.
Central Hawks v Kingborough
THE Central Hawks stay at home for the second week but face massive task to record their first win of the season when they host the in-form Kingborough who are desperate to hang on to third position on the ladder. The Hawks were gallant in defeat last weekend against Huonville and probably played their most consistent game for the season but the opposition are a lot better side and they really need to lift and play consistent football if they are to match their more fancied rivals. Kingborough were solid winners at home against Sorell but played well below their best football and really need a lift from some of their out of form players and this game could be a good confidence building affair.
The Hawks need to slow the game down and play accountable football otherwise the Tigers will switch the play and create the loose man and really score quickly and break the game right open. The Tigers should have too much class and experience and record a very easy win away from home as the improving Hawks would have been a chance to win today against most sides as they have steadily been improving.

HUONVILLE are back at home and will be seeking an upset victory when they host Claremont who will be striving for victory to remain in the top six. The Lions struggled last week away from home finally defeating last placed Central Hawks and will need a big improvement to win this game. They always play well away from home and an upset two weeks ago against Brighton suggests if they play their best football they can steal the four points. The Magpies were solid winners at home over East Coast but really failed to put them away and record a very big win and really need to get of to a good start and not allow the home side any momentum early in the game.

New Norfolk v Brighton
NEW Norfolk are back at home and will not be taking this game lightly as they still need to win to hold on to top spot as they host an improving Brighton who usually lift for the neighbourly clash. The Eagles had a real battle last weekend before eventually defeating Dodges Ferry, but will need to improve and get a more even team contribution and not rely on too few players. The Robins have been down in recent weeks but really performed strongly in a narrow loss to second-placed Lindisfarne and if they can reproduce that form for a full four quarters they are a chance for an upset victory.
Brighton need to take control of the midfield battle, win the clearances and attempt to flood back to try to stop their key forwards from getting a one out contest. The Eagles need a good start to prevent the visitors from getting any momentum and boost in confidence. New Norfolk also need quick goals to put some scoreboard pressure on Brighton. New Norfolk have too much to play for and with a poor performance last weekend they should be fired up to play their best football and take the points. It will be interesting if Brighton can give them a real fright for most of the day.
Central Hawks v Kingborough
THE Central Hawks stay at home for the second week but face massive task to record their first win of the season when they host the in-form Kingborough who are desperate to hang on to third position on the ladder. The Hawks were gallant in defeat last weekend against Huonville and probably played their most consistent game for the season but the opposition are a lot better side and they really need to lift and play consistent football if they are to match their more fancied rivals. Kingborough were solid winners at home against Sorell but played well below their best football and really need a lift from some of their out of form players and this game could be a good confidence building affair.
The Hawks need to slow the game down and play accountable football otherwise the Tigers will switch the play and create the loose man and really score quickly and break the game right open. The Tigers should have too much class and experience and record a very easy win away from home as the improving Hawks would have been a chance to win today against most sides as they have steadily been improving.

HUONVILLE are back at home and will be seeking an upset victory when they host Claremont who will be striving for victory to remain in the top six. The Lions struggled last week away from home finally defeating last placed Central Hawks and will need a big improvement to win this game. They always play well away from home and an upset two weeks ago against Brighton suggests if they play their best football they can steal the four points. The Magpies were solid winners at home over East Coast but really failed to put them away and record a very big win and really need to get of to a good start and not allow the home side any momentum early in the game.

Wake in Fright
THE recently rediscovered Australian classic Wake in Fright will be the Derwent Valley Film Society's feature at its next meeting this Saturday night. Full details are here.
Poland calling
THE Derwent Valley Concert Band is a fortnight into its European tour. The journey got off to a difficult start when 40 pieces of luggage failed to arrive in Austria with the band. Missing for two days were many of the band's uniforms and instruments. Music director Layton Hodgetts rang in to ABC Radio from Poland earlier this week and the broadcast can be heard here. The band is being accompanied by Central Highlands mayor Deirdre Flint and singer Petronella van Tienen.

Dodges Ferry v New Norfolk
NEW Norfolk survived a huge scare and showed their class in the last term to eventually get over a brave Dodges Ferry away from home last weekend, kicking 15.15 (105) to 14.9 (93). The first term saw a real hard contest as both sides played some brilliant patches of football and the Sharks matched their more fancied rivals to grab a four point lead at the first change.
The second term saw the Eagles really step up a gear but Dodges Ferry were not going to let them get away and frustrated them as they gave them no space and only trailled by two points in a high standard game of football.
The second half became a real battle as the goal scoring dried up and the ability of the Eagles defence to hold firm in the last term saw them take the points in a real scare as they still hold on to top spot on the ladder. Best players for the Eagles were Crane, Hall, Heron and Horne whilst Thompson kicked four and Wardlaw three goals.
Central Hawks v Huonville (Kempton)

The first term saw both sides desperate to grab an advantage and there were plenty of skill errors and turnovers while only a point separated the sides. The Hawks would have been pleased to get off to a good start at home. The second term saw the Hawks really grab the advantage as they kicked five goals to two and really had their confidence up as they moved to a very handy 19 point lead at the main break.
Huonville bounced back in the third term, keeping the home side scoreless and they really tightened up their defence to wrest back the lead by 11 points but the game was still there to be won. The Hawks really fought the game out but just lacked a little bit of class and poise in the last term. The Lions would be happy to take the four points on a difficult road trip. Better players for the Hawks were Daly with four goals, Bryant, Jones and Matthews as they get closer to winning their first game of the season.

LINDISFARNE just about sewed up a top two finish when they defeated a much improved Brighton away from home by 17 points, 10.14 (74) to 8.9 (57). The first term saw the home side really get off to a good start and matched their more fancied rivals and really played tight contested football as they grabbed a narrow one point lead and were well in the game. Lindisfarne slowly increased their intensity and were starting to create the loose man and moved to a handy 10 point lead but missed easy shots at goal and should of lead by more.
The third term saw the Blues still control the game in a low scoring contest but they could not get away to a comfortable lead as Brighton were at them all day but they could not close the gap and the Blues continued on their winning way especially four points on the road whilst Brighton would of been happy with a much improved performance. Better players for the Robins were Willing, Cowan, Matcham and Steele as they still remain out of the top six.

The first term saw the visitors really come out to play. They dominated patches of the first quarter but kicked poorly for goal as the Magpies took their chances and grabbed an eight point lead at the first change. The second term saw Claremont really step up a gear and started to run and create the loose man and the Bombers could not shut them down as they kicked seven goals to race away to a match winning lead of 47 points at the main break.
They continued to control the game in the third term and a big win looked on the cards but full credit to the Bombers as they outscored the home side in the last term but once again one bad quarter cost them any chance of winning. Best players for the winners were Wilson, Daly, Bennet with five goals and Rosewell, whilst Kamaric was dangerous up forward with five goals.

KINGBOROUGH remains a solid third on the ladder after shaking off a persistent Sorell to win by 57 points, 17.15 (117) to 6.12 (48).

Llewellyn meet and greet
WILLOW Court Conservation chairman David Llewellyn met with the historic site's two "friends" groups earlier tonight and said he had been anxious to talk with them. About 15 members of the Friends of Willow Court and Friends of Frescati were there, along with several councillors and the council general manager. Mr Llewellyn said it was important to discuss what the three bodies could do to meet their mutual objective of advancing the important work of conserving and developing Willow Court.
Mr Llewellyn said power supply and security were his immediate priorities. The state's electricity retailer, Aurora Energy, was due to provide him with some options in the next 7-10 days and he would meet its chief executive officer Peter Davis to discuss the recommendations. "It will most likely be an underground service, which may have some archaeological issues," he said.
Meanwhile, discussions were being held with Heritage Tasmania about making sure proposed security improvements were as authentic as possible and in keeping with the history of the site. Mr Llewellyn said electricity and security were the keys to having the site operational as soon as possible.
There was a brief discussion about the need to develop a calendar of events at Willow Court, with Mr Llewellyn saying he envisaged a major event being held on site every three months or so. He similarly proposed meeting with representatives of the Friends groups every three or four months. In closing the meeting, Mr Llewellyn asked the representatives of the two Friends groups to consider the benefits of amalgamating.

Update for town sign
THE entry sign on the outskirts of New Norfolk was given a facelift last week. New signage on the front and rear of the structure has replaced the original panel that had "Derwent Valley Council" in larger writing than the name of the town. A new panel on the rear of the sign features a photograph of the iconic view of New Norfolk from Pulpit Rock Lookout.

Death of Denis Warner

After being discharged from the army in 1945 he served as a war correspondent at the Iwo Jima and Okinawa landings, and in the initial occupation of Japan. In May 1945 he was wounded in a kamikaze strike on the British aircraft carrier HMS Formidable. He later reported on the Korean and Vietnam wars and was twice honoured for his services to journalism.
Denis Warner OBE CMG is survived by his children Shelley, Nick and Annabel, and grandchildren. He is remembered today in obituaries in the nation's leading newspapers including:

Dodges Ferry v New Norfolk
DODGES Ferry face a real test of their character when they host the top of the ladder premiership favourite New Norfolk in a difficult assignment although they do have a distinct home ground advantage. The Sharks were disappointing in the second half last weekend away from home, losing to second-placed Lindisfarne and must really be prepared to play a solid four quarters of pressure football if they are to cause an upset victory. They also play their ground really well and should be able to close up the game and slow the Eagles down but they need to generate some scoring opportunities to put some early scoreboard pressure on their rivals.
New Norfolk will treat this as a danger game and will be desperate to hang onto top spot over Lindisfarne and will not relax for this encounter. They need to get off to a good start and if they can find space through the corridor then their key forwards should be able to create enough opportunities for them to kick a winning score.The Sharks may give some cheek early in the game but the Eagles have plenty of scoring power and with a settled and watertight defence they should be far too strong and record another comfortable win away from home.
CENTRAL Hawks are wanting to record their first win of the season and look a real chance when they host the in form Huonville at Kempton in what promises to be a very close game of football. The Hawks were gallant last weekend, losing away from hone to East Coast. They still have those bad quarters where they lose concentration and are scored heavily against. They must find some consistency and attempt to hold firm when opposition sides get a run on if they are to win this important game of football.
The Lions recorded their best win of the season last weekend at home against Brighton and will be full of confidence and fired up to record their fourth win of the season. They will be wanting to get off to a good start and not allow the home side to get any early momentum or confidence. If they find themselves behind it will be hard to wrestle back the lead from a desperate opposition. You would expect the Hawks to really lift for this winnable game but Huonville should have a little edge in class and experience and be able to take the points and record their fourth win of the season but will need to be at their best against a desperate home side.
Brighton v Lindisfarne
BRIGHTON are back at home and will be desperate for a win to try to break back into the top six but face a massive task when they host the second-placed in-form Lindisfarne and will need a huge improvement to cause a big upset victory. The Robins were shock losers last week away from home by Huonville after a very poor start and having lost their last two games and dropping out of the top six for the first time this season they are in a real slump. The midfield battle should decide the game and if the Blues get on top in this area and create the loose man then their talented forward line will be far too strong for the defence of the home side. The Robins should put up a solid performance in front of their home crowd but the big Pontville ground will suit the Two Blues and they should have too much run and firepower up forward and should take the points and keep firmly entrenched in the top two.
Claremont v East Coast
CLAREMONT are back at home and looking to bounce back after last weekend's disappointing performance when they host an improving East Coast in what poses a s a real danger game for the Magpies. The Magpies were easily defeated away from home last week against a much improved Cygnet and need to bounce back and recapture their best form. They need to play a more accountable style of football and attempt to force the skill errors overs rather than waiting for the opposition side to turn the ball over and need to lift their intensity for longer periods of the game. Claremont will be desperate to remain in the top six and after a hard week on the track they should finish the game strongly and with a vocal home crowd they should take the points but must be at their best against a talented side that lacks consistency for a full four quarters.
Kingborough v Sorell
KINGBOROUGH are back at home and looking to bounce back and should have not trouble in recording a win over a struggling Sorell who will be fresh from a bye but still need to work on their consistency.

Scholarship for local brewer
CONGRATULATIONS to Derwent Valley businessman Ashley Huntington on his selection as one of Tasmania's six Churchill Fellowship recipients for 2012. Mr Huntington is one of the principals of the Two Metre Tall Company, producing boutique ales and ciders near Hayes. The Churchill Fellowship will enable him to study the use of fruit in ale production in Belgium, France, the UK and the US.

New Norfolk v Kingborough
NEW Norfolk again showed they will be the team to beat for this year's flag as they slowly strangled highly rated Kingborough and eventually kicked away in the second half to record a great victory on the day of their annual Red and Black Ball, winning by 71 points with inaccurate kicking of 14.21 (105) to 4.10 (34).
The first term was a really hard fought affair and there were no easy possessions. New Norfolk were slightly the better side but they wasted easy shots at goal and should have led by more than four points at the first change. The second term saw the Eagles again waste scoring opportunities and their defence was rock solid. The Tigers had problems getting a mark inside the forward 50 and could not kick a goal as the home side stretched their lead to 19 points at the main break but should have been a lot further in front.
The third term saw the Eagles really step up a gear and a one-handed mark and goal by the talented Josh Hall ignited the team as they slammed on eight goals to race away to a match winning lead of 56 points to blow away a dejected opposition. The last term saw the game slow right down but New Norfolk would not relax, keeping the opposition to only four goals in a great defensive performance, which will be required to win the big finals.
Best players for the Eagles were plenty with Crane and Barwick outstanding all day and they were well supported by Papera, Heron and the classy Hall whose brilliance and three goals turned the game in the Eagles' favour. Best players for an outclassed Tigers were Collis, Philp, Peterson and Booth as they struggled up forward all day with only kicking four goals.
East Coast recorded their third win of the season at home when they defeated a gallant Central Hawks by 29 points, 19.12 (126) to 15.7 (97). The Bombers could smell a winnable game and they started full of running, slamming on seven goals in the first term as they cruised to a very handy 26 point lead at quarter time. The Hawks after a blast from their coach really started to get their running game going and they controlled the aerial duels and got themselves back into the game and only trailled by 16 points at the main break and were starting to look confident.
The third term was an even contest and neither side could get an advantage. In the last term the Hawks started to look tired and the home side kicked a further seven goals to record a much deserved and needed four points. The Hawks again got close but failed to run out the game and they still chase that elusive first win of the season. Better players for the Hawks were Howlett with five goals along with Brown, Ladic and Horne.
Huonville v Brighton
HUONVILLE recorded their third win of the season and caused a major surprise when they defeated an out of form Brighton, pushing them out of the top six and winning by one point, kicking 15.3 (93) to 14.8 (92). The home side really started the game full of running and played some of their best football for the year. They kicked seven goals in the first term while the highly rated Brighton were shell shocked and needed to improve quickly, trailing by 28 points. The Robin slowly worked their way into the game in the second term and played more accountable football as they closed the game up and reduced the gap to eight points at the main break and looked likely to run away with the game.
The third term saw the Lions slowly pull away again and looked to have the game in their keeping but the visitors really came home strongly in the last term and failed just narrowly. Brighton can blame their loss on a very poor start away from home and not being mentally prepared as the Lions were deserving victors. Best players for the Robins were Boucher, Willing, Matcham and Ling whilst Tubb kicked four goals in a lone hand up forward.
Cygnet v Claremont
CYGNET nosed into the top six and pose a real threat to opposition sides as they have now defeated two sides above them on the ladder. They easily defeated Claremont by 46 points, kicking 19.5 (119) to 11.7 (73). Cygnet were really fired up in the first term and with accurate kicking of six majors they controlled the game and grabbed a very handy 16 point lead at the first change. The Magpies were never going to lie down and they bounced back hard in the second term with five goals and clearly looked the better side as they grabbed a four point lead and looked to be playing the better football.
The third term saw a really fired up Cygnet really start to take the game on and they played on at all costs and moved the ball really quickly as the Claremont could not match their pace or slick ball movement as they kicked seven goals to blow the game apart and went to a match winning lead of 30 pints at the last change. The game slowed in the last term but the Port still controlled the state of play to record their best win of the season. Better players for a disappointing Claremont were Daley, Fewkes, Arnold and Kamaric with four goals and they now drop to fifth on the ladder.
Lindisfarne v Dodges Ferry
LINDISFARNE again showed they are a real force this season when they produced another solid performance at home to defeat highly rated Dodges Ferry under lights on Friday night by 37 points, 14.18 (102) to 9.1 (65).

End of the run for country buses
The last services will run on Tuesday, July 31. In a statement published on its website, Derwent Valley Link thanks those who supported the Maydena, Lachlan and Magra services and expresses its regret that it cannot continue operating to these areas.
The company has also announced two changes to its New Norfolk bus service with effect from July 29. The Route 132 Hobart to New Norfolk express service will leave the city at 5.40pm on weekdays rather than 5.30. Meanwhile the Route 130 New Norfolk to Glenorchy service (weekdays 5.05pm from Warner Ave and 5.25pm from Burnett St) will be deleted from the timetable.
New timetables are expected to be posted on the Derwent Valley Link website on July 23 and will also be available on the buses or from outlets around New Norfolk.

While in the Derwent Valley, Mr Adams treated the minister to a few of the Derwent Valley’s hidden tourism treasures. They visited the historic Redlands estate at Plenty to see the restoration works being undertaken by Peter and Elizabeth Hope, as well as the Agrarian Kitchen at Lachlan. Mr Ferguson was so impressed with the operations of the kitchen, he has said he may have to visit again to take a cooking class.
A forum on the tourism industry was held in the afternoon at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms and it was encouraging to see so many tourism operators meeting to discuss the future that tourism holds in the Derwent Valley. Mr Ferguson and Mr Adams explained the national and international tourism environment and how this might affect the Valley. There was also a question and answer session allowing tourism operators to ask the minister about some of the challenges facing the industry.
Mr Ferguson has promised to return once the guidelines to funding rounds have been set and to sit down with interested operators to help them to develop competitive submissions later on this year. He said $48.5 million over four years would be provided to a new Tourism Industry Regional Development Fund, which will support tourism industry development projects in regional Australia, through grants of up to $250,000.
The minister departed New Norfolk with only positive things to say about the Derwent Valley, its people, and its future in tourism. Mr Ferguson said the quality of the product was the key to developing a thriving tourism industry and Agrarian Kitchen had shown how it can be done. He also encouraged local businesses to ensure their messages were linked and said it would be useful to have a internet portal that covered the whole of the Valley and beyond.
Small business discussions
Among the visiting party were Senators Eric Abetz and David Bushhy and Tasmanian Liberal leader Will Hodgman MHA, along with the federal Liberal candidate for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson, and the Federal Opposition small business spokesman Bruce Billson MHR.
The June 12 visit featured a small business roundtable at the motel, followed by a walk through New Norfolk's main street.

New Norfolk v Kingborough
NEW Norfolk will be looking to stay on the top of the ladder and get revenge for their first round loss when they host the in-form Kingborough in what promises to be a high class affair with no easy possessions from two talented sides. The Eagles had the bye last weekend and should be well rested. The previous week they easily accounted for the previously undefeated Lindisfarne and they are in peak form and looking more dangerous as the season progresses. The Tigers easily accounted for Huonville last week but would have preferred a harder tune-up as today's game will be played at a fast speed with heavy tackling and pressure all day long.
Both sides have a fairly even midfield with the Tigers a faster running side and the Eagles more physical and stronger around the contests and a lot more dangerous up forward. The Eagles may be a little too strong especially at home and have more goal scoring ability and should take the points but will need to be at their best as the Tigers always lift for this important rival when ever they meet.
East Coast v Central Hawks
EAST Coast are back at home and looking for their third win of the season and get a real big chance when they host the Central Hawks who should also see this as a big change to register their first four points of the season. The Bombers were thrashed last weekend away from home by Dodges Ferry and really need to improve their consistency over the four quarters if they are to grab the points. They need their younger players to take on more responsibility and not leave it to their more experienced players. The Hawks have slowly improved over the season and were competitive last weekend at home against Claremont but failed to fire after half time and really need to learn to run out games if they are to take the points.
The Hawks should sense a real opportunity for a win and prepare really well and must do their homework and attempt to shut down the dangerous midfield of the Bombers to slow down their scoring opportunities.
The Bombers should be a little too strong towards the end of the game and once they get the smell of victory they should lift in front of their home crowd and get a much deserved win as the Hawks may have to wait a little longer to record a win.
Huonville v Brighton
HUONVILLE get another chance to win their third game of the season when they host a struggling Brighton who badly need to get back in form or they will drop out of the top six. The Lions were thrashed last weekend by Kingborough and will really need to find more avenues to goals and increase their scoring capacity if they are to record a surprise win. They need a good start to stop any early momentum from the visitors. The Robins were easily defeated by Cygnet in a surprise loss last weekend and really need to gain some much needed confidence and this could be the game to get their season back on track.
Brighton need to get off to a good start and put some early scoreboard pressure on the home side and really run hard and spread in an attempt to create the loose man and get the ball quickly into their big forwards. You would expect Huonville to give plenty of cheek for most of the game but a desperate Robins really need the points and they should lift and get some much needed confidence.

Temporary bakery approved
The news comes almost four months after the original Banjo's outlet was destroyed along with two other businesses in a disastrous fire that brought down the century-old Lee Building on the High St/Burnett St corner. Soon after the fire, rumours abounded that the bakery would reopen in the recently closed Joe's Supermarket, a prime location next to the post office. In a recent issue of the Derwent Valley Gazette, a Banjo's spokesman confirmed the plan to open at an undisclosed temporary location but reaffirmed that the long-term plan was to return to the corner spot.
The new location also has a long history, having been built as O'Brien's General Store in 1929. The business also included drapery and a bakehouse. From the early 1960s it was run by Rayner Bros as a supermarket and they eventually sold to Purity (now Woolworths) who operated there until building the present Charles St supermarket in 1983. The High St location continued as a supermarket until earlier this year. It has operated under various independent grocery business names and had several major upgrades including in the late 1980s when Ali Sultan reintroduced an in-store bakery. The most recent owner/operator was Joe Mohammed who completed a major revovation about 10 years ago.

Central Hawks v Claremont
CLAREMONT remain firmly entrenched in the top six after they travelled to Oatlands but easily accounted for the Central Hawks by 75 points, kicking 15.15 (105) to 4.6 (30). The visitors got off to the start they wanted with the first two goals of the game as both sides took time to settle with plenty of mistakes but Claremont went into the first break with a handy 17 point lead. The second term saw the Magpies start to create the loose man and they took control of the game with five goals and moved to a handy 37 point lead at the main break and looked in total control of the game.
The home side Hawks really slowed up the game in the second half but were not able to generate any scoring opportunities as Claremont peppered away to record a solid win of the road but will need to improve in recent weeks as they have a tough draw. Best players for the Magpies were Fewkes, Bird, Smith and Wilson with Curtain dangerous up forward with four goals. Better players for a valiant Hawks were McWilliams, Nibbs and Brown as they still chase their first win of the season.
Brighton v Cygnet
CYGNET really showed how much they have improved this season when they travelled to Pontville and showed they were far too good for a disappointing Brighton, winning by 28 points, 14.14 (98) to 9.16 (70).
The first term saw the victors get off to a really good start on the road and did not allow the Robins to get any early momentum as they only trailled by five points and looked well in the contest. The second quarter saw the Port really step up a gear and surprise their more fancied rivals and piled on five goals and moved to a very handy 20 point lead and looked clearly the better side.
The third term is known as the premiership quarter and Cygnet put Brighton to the sword. The Robins could not respond and the Port kicked a further five goals and raced away to a match winning lead of 42 points. Although they slowed up in the last term they deserved their great victory especially on the road. Best players for the Port were plenty with Ford the stand out all day and he received good support from Davie and Watson whilst Tyrell and Halton each kicked four goals. Best players for a very flat Brighton were Blackwell, Triffitt, Howlett and Boucher and they are now in trouble of dropping out of the top six as Cygnet are breathing down their necks.
Dodges Ferry v East Coast
DODGES Ferry moved to third on the ladder and continued their good recent form when they thrashed East Coast by 95 points, 23.8 (146) to 7.9 (51).
Sorell v Lindisfarne
LINDISFARNE continued on their winning way and sewed up their clash against Sorell in the first term. They eventually won by 88 points kicking 20.11 (131) to 6.7 (43).
Kingborough v Huonville
KINGBOROUGH taught their rivals a football lesson as they cruised past a disappointing Huonville, kicking 17.12 (114) to a lowly 3.6 (24).

Their tackling and defence work was sensational and a pleasure to watch and in the future these boys will be a force to be reckoned with. When the opposition went forward they made all opportunities count. Congratulations to Josh Challenger for playing his 100th game. Josh has a bright future ahead of him on the footy field and has done a great job in the backline this season. Let's hope there are many more games to come. Under 12: North Hobart 9.5 (59) d New Norfolk 1.3 (13) at Tynwald Park. Goals - NN: Mitchell Clark;
Best - NN: team effort. New Norfolk was gallant in defeat against North Hobart in wet and cold conditions at Tynwald. Despite the scoreline the boys showed pure determination and courage and fought to the end. Their tackling and defence work was sensational and a pleasure to watch and in the future these boys will be a force to be reckoned with. No boy could possibly be singled out in this match as all the boys gave 100%. This weekend New Norfolk has the bye.

Under 14: Sandy Bay 8.8 (56) d New Norfolk 7.11 (53) at Tynwald Park. Goals - NN: Cooper Triffitt 2, Connor Salter 2, Alex Blair, Adam Byrne, Shayne Upton; Best - NN: Connor Salter, Cooper Triffitt, Alex Blair, Joshua Farrow, Mitchell Banks, Torne Oates. Although New Norfolk were narrowly defeated by Sandy Bay in greasy conditions the boys put in a good team effort. Their attack on the ball and their tackling were much improved from previous games. The boys are starting to believe in themselves more, and with this their confidence and team work will continue to improve.
Under 15: Sandy Bay Blue 17.8 (110) d New Norfolk 5.2 (32) at Tynwald Park. Goals - NN: Aaron Thorpe 2, Jacob Picken, Ryan Wakefield, Charlie Stewart; Best - NN: Ryan Wakefield, Mitchell Booth, Daniel Browning, Brodie Gleeson, Aaron Thorpe, Brett Hodge. New Norfolk put up a hard fought game against Sandy Bay on Sunday. The young Eagles tried hard for the four quarters, but just couldn't match it with the more polished Sandy Bay. In a game where the scoreboard didn't really reflect how the Eagles played, given they tackled and pressured well for the whole game. When the opposition went forward they made all opportunities count. Congratulations to Josh Challenger for playing his 100th game. Josh has a bright future ahead of him on the footy field and has done a great job in the backline this season. Let's hope there are many more games to come. Next game: v Lauderdale at Tynwald Park at 12.30pm. Brodie Gleeson, Brayden Chaplin, Jacob Picken and Zoe Thurston will play their 100th NNJFC game.
