Round 11 Preview - New Norfolk v Brighton at Boyer

THE stage has been set for former AFL star and Yarrawonga spearhead Brendan Fevola this Saturday when he again pulls on the Eagles' number 25 jumper and another bumper crowd is expected to make its way to Boyer Oval.

The Eagles have dominated the competition in the first 10 rounds of the 2013 season with only one loss to date and have won convincingly against major challengers such as Claremont and Kingborough, so you would expect a goal feast against cellar dwellers Brighton.

Michael Thompson has been in great form leading the Eagles attack but he may be asked to clear some space as Fevola returns to the key post for this game and he is sure to set himself a target to beat his record haul of 18 goals in 2012 against Huonville.

Brighton’s younger players, particularly the impressive Callen Daly, have been leading the way this year. The Robins will take some hope into this game and should have learnt from a much improved effort against the East Coast Bombers last round displaying more team-style football and showing something closer to a four quarter effort.

New Norfolk should maintain its winning form at home and they should continue to be the pacesetter this season in what may be a cricket-score total.

Free days to replace tip vouchers

ENTRY to New Norfolk's public tip at Peppermint Hill will be free to all residents of the municipality on the first Saturday of each month. The free days will replace the previous system vouchers being issued to residents living outside the household garbage and recycling collection service.

The council believes the previous system was open to abuse, with some vouchers being counterfeited or exchanged for money. Under the new arrangements starting on the first Saturday in July, all residents of the Derwent Valley municipality will be able to access the refuse disposal area at the Peppermint Hill site free of charge.

Anyone wanting to access the refuse disposal area will need to present their current drivers licence with a Derwent Valley address on it. Cars, utilities and cars with trailers will be able to access the area to dispose of domestic waste, green waste, white goods, e-waste, TVs, metals and all recyclable items.

"This replaces and extends the free admission passes previously issued to non-garbage collection areas," general manager Stephen Mackey said. "No other free admission passes will be available."

The free days form part of the council budget for 2013-14. Saturday, July 6, will be the first free-entry day at Peppermint Hill.

THE Big River Growers Market is now in winter mode and is being held indoors at the New Norfolk Lions Club rooms at Willow Court on the last Saturday of each month from 9am-noon. 

The offering includes fresh and preserved local produce, ready-to-eat meals, cakes, pies, jams and more. The weekly outdoor version of the market resumes in November.

Councils' cash surprise

THE Derwent Valley Council is set to receive nearly $125,000 in federal funds to help build and renew community infrastructure, it was announced by the Federal Member for Lyons, Dick Adams MHR, late last week. The Federal Government is delivering new funding to all local councils through Round 5 of the Regional Development Fund and the Liveable Cities Program.

“This is great news for the widespread regions of Lyons - with these projects will come more jobs and a boost to the local economy," Mr Adams said. “This new investment builds on our earlier record of funding community infrastructure to create jobs and drive economic growth in regional and local communities”, Mr Adams said.

“This federal funding boost will allow our councils to start on ‘shovel ready’ projects, generating new economic activity as soon as possible. The councils can use these funds to build and renew community infrastructure such as sporting facilities, libraries, town halls and playgrounds. This investment may also be of benefit to essential community services such as child care facilities”, Mr Adams said.

To receive the money, councils will need to outline the projects they intend to put this funding towards. Funding is based on the current distribution of the Financial Assistance Grants. Alerting the council to the new funding at last week's council meeting, Councillor Damian Bester asked that the public be invited to suggest suitable projects. Mayor Martyn Evans said this would done if the government's timeframe allowed it.

NEW Norfolk confirmed its tag as favourite for the 2013 SFL Season with a 92-point demolition of Claremont at Boyer Oval on Saturday, which included a seven-goal haul from spearhead Michael Thompson who was playing his 150th senior game for the club.

The Eagles destroyed the Pies 20.18 (138) to 7.4 (46), but it was almost a line-ball game after the first quarter, with the Eagles holding only a six-point buffer at the break after Claremont banged on three goals pin three minutes midway through the term.

The Eagles' use of the ball was more fluent than the Magpies' and that was evident in the second quarter as the Pies had difficulty entering their forward 50. The home team began each quarter as if it was their last and managed the opening goal in all four. A scuffle in front of the main grandstand kept the local crowd vocal as the Eagles headed into the long break with a 29-point advantage.

Eagles captain Luke Joseph, playing in his 200th game, was instrumental in the third quarter, as was forward Brett Booth, who booted four goals in the term and narrowly missed a fifth. The Eagles totally dominated their opposition, although the Magpies managed three quick goals before the three-quarter time siren.


The home team started the final stanza brilliantly, with early goals to Zeke Gardam and Michael Thompson who booted four in that quarter. Claremont seemed to run out of legs, remaining goalless in the final term as New Norfolk stamped its authority to move a game clear on top of the ladder.

Eagles coach Jon Murray spoke to the Mercury newspaper after the game and said: "Our boys in the back line didn't shirk their task at all during the day and I'm proud of all the boys. We made a big emphasis on sticking to our game plan and we managed to do that."

Last season's William Leitch Medallist Michael Thompson along with Kurt Styles, Rohan Heron, Sam Hall, Roger Belcher and Brett Booth were named among the best for the winners while Ashton Arnold, Dave Kamaric and Brayden Barwick contributed for the Pies.

In the reserves game Claremont were the victors by 11 points and in the Under 18s match New Norfolk took the points by a three-point margin.

The Under 16s went down to Sorell on Sunday in a physical and at times close match. New Norfolk got off to a great start kicking four goals to three in the first quarter.
In the second term Sorell bounced back kicking seven goals to two and this was the quarter that hurt New Norfolk and from here they played catch-up football.
To their credit they didn’t give up, keeping things even for the remaining two quarters by kicking five goals to Sorell’s five. New Norfolk played the match out to the end which was a big improvement on the week before.
New Norfolk was well served by Aiden Russell who continues to improve week after week. Patrick Vout again played some great hard footy as did Cooper Triffitt and Brodie Gleeson who kicked a great goal on the run.
Up forward it was a great display of marking and kicking for goal by Alex Blair while Connor Salter did well booting three majors. Billy Pauly and Dakoda Smith chipped in with one goal each.

Junior soccer - June 22 games

THE coaches of New Norfolk's junior soccer teams report on last weekend's matches.

Under 6 Red played a wonderful game against Holy Rosary in very cold -1C conditions! Jade, Campbell and Hunter showed speed around the ground and great defence work. Tobias and Tristan had some great kick-ins and helped work the ball around the ground. Special thanks to Kerith and Scott for the warm Milo at half-time.

Under 6 Black had a great game at Brighton in the frost. The team showed great determination and played their best game so far. Gemma White scored a great goal.

Under 6 White played a fast-paced game against Brighton. William continued on to play a great game after copping a soccer ball to the belly. Great sharing of the ball this week boys, well done.

Under 7 Red had a great game against New Norfolk White in freezing conditions. Well done to Caitlin on a great running goal, three good goals to Makayla and two to J’Khobi.  Great teamwork and passing from Nayte, Daniel and Mia.

Under 7 Black played a great game against Glenorchy Knights at Tynwald Park with everyone scoring a goal and working the ball well. Well done team!

Under 7 White had an enjoyable game against fellow team New Norfolk Red and everyone played well.

Under 8 played an awesome game against Dominic at home in the freezing conditions, coming out one goal in front. Well done to Oliver on his first game of the season. Luke and Oliver also had some great saves in goal. A special mention to Sam who despite being frozen played a great game!

Under 9 played a fantastic game on a very frosty ground. We had a win 13-1 with the goal scorers Aidan 3, Ostyn 2, Maddy 2, Brock 2, Alex Gunn 2 (his first and second goal of the season!) with Luke and Jacob one each.  Great saves in the goals were made by Luke and Alex Bourne. Well done guys, you are all playing brilliantly and special mention must be made of Alex Gunn and Aidan who played a half each for Brighton – Aidan even kicking Brighton’s only goal.

Under 10 was defeated by tough competitor Dominic Black at Dominic. Special mentions to our goalies Lucy and Gemma for their consistent efforts and to goal scorers Jed, Levi, Lane and Blake. Given the icy conditions all players should be congratulated for their attempts to stay on the opposition.

Under 11 played a great game against Dominic. A special mention to Cody who was an excellent shot at goal and a special mention equally to Kasey our goalie for stopping some hard shots, and Lily for working well on the wings driving the ball into our attacking half. Good game everyone!

Under 14C played Olympia B at Tynwald Park with the game ending in a 3-all draw after a fantastic, well matched game. The game saw the ball see-saw backwards and forwards with many shots at goal from both teams. It’s been a pleasure for the parents and coaches to see how the players continue to improve since the start of the season, keep it up team. Goal scorers were Jayden Bartels with two and Blake Priest with one.

Under 14D played University at Olinda Grove early Saturday morning ending in a nil-all draw. The entire team played exceptionally well. In attack Jakeb Rhodes and Braydon Wilson made quite a few shots at goal to miss just “by that much”. The defenders were busy. Nathan Coleman is well known for his speed and last-line-of-defence ball steals, Joel White showed great patience to refuse to let the opposition past and Jack Rose consistently showed his level headedness and body-use skills.  Great game team!

Derwent Valley rates up 3.5%

RATEPAYERS will have a 3.5% increase in their rates notice for the next financial year. The budget was approved at last week's Derwent Valley Council meeting and Mayor Martyn Evans said he was pleased the increase had been kept to a minimum. “Council voted to accept the draft budget presented to them with rate increases for the 2013–14 year set to be 3.5%,” Councillor Evans said.

Some of the projects funded this year include:

• Derwent Valley Regional Arts inaugural art competition major prize.
• Installation of guard rails on Back River Rd, in the vicinity of Fairview Primary School to increase safety.
• Construction of a car park at the Molesworth Community Hall.
• Financial support for the Tiger Trail Festival.

Major capital works projects will include:

• Continuation of essential works including kerb and channel, stormwater works and sealing between Black Hills Rd and Back River Rd.
• Re-sealing part of Glenora Rd. 
• Continuation of drainage replacement and upgrades including Maydena, Molesworth and Third Avenue.
• Erosion prevention along the Derwent Esplanade at New Norfolk.

“Council is mindful of the financial pressures that household budgets face, and works to keep a balance between keeping rate increases to a minimum while still providing essential services to residents,” Cr Evans said.

Llewellyn reports on Willow Court progress

PROGRESS continues to be made on restoration works at the Willow Court historic site, conservation committee chairman David Llewellyn said yesterday. "The installation of new underground electricity now completed to the site has resulted in new lighting down the length of the avenue and the start of works to repair the broken windows in Bronte is progressing. Providing lights and electricity to the site and basic repair works are a few of the many current activities overseen by the committee," Mr Llewellyn said.

Mr Llewellyn emphasised that the Willow Court Conservation Special Committee was actively pursuing the use of local contractors for many aspects of the restoration work, and had already used a number of local contractors.

“Expressions of interest for work on the Barracks, Bronte and landscaping surroundings were received by the committee at its June 13th meeting and I’m very pleased to say that a high number of quality submissions were received. We expect to award contracts shortly to prepare the necessary planning and heritage documentation to undertake the major restoration and redevelopment works at the Barracks and Bronte, including full landscaping of the heritage precinct,” Mr Llewellyn said.

"Willow Court is a nationally recognised heritage precinct, of great importance to the region and nation," he said.

Who can it be? No. 1

THIS footballer from Granton played for Bridgewater as a youngster in 1950. Throughout his career he played as a ruckman and was a great clubman and always gave 100 per cent effort. In 1952 he was named the best first year player for New Norfolk. He was selected to represent the TFL in 1953 and 1954.

He suffered a knee injury in 1956 but played for Molesworth from 1957 to 1959 in the South Eastern District competition, being captain/coach in 1959. In 1962 he started a five year stint at Hamilton, winning the best and fairest award in 1962 and 1965 and runner-up in 1966. He was the captain/coach when Hamilton won its last premiership in 1965. He finished his career with Upper Derwent in 1969 and was among the best players in its grand final win.

He was the New Norfolk best and fairest player in 1954 and also won the William Leitch Medal that year. He was selected in the 1956 carnival team but suffered his knee injury at training and didn’t get to play a game.

IN the 1957 Southern Districts Football Association preliminary final played on September 14 between Hamilton and Bothwell at Bridgewater in heavy rain and driving winds, Bothwell kicked with the wind in the first quarter and scored three goals and five behinds. By three-quarter-time Hamilton had managed to score two goals and four behinds with Bothwell unable to add to their score.

In the last quarter Hamilton kicked one goal and four behinds to win by three points. The final scores were Hamilton 3.8 (26) to Bothwell 3.5 (23). Bothwell had been unable to add to its quarter time score. An under-strength Hamilton was no match for Bridgewater in the Grand Final a week later.

Support for fire-affected students

STUDENTS in fire-affected communities in south eastern Tasmania will share in up to $1.47 million in extra funding to help them get the help they need to successfully get on with their schooling. Federal Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett MHR, said students in some 134 flood- and fire-affected communities across Australia would get extra support. Under this announcement, six schools in the Lyons will each receive $11,000, including two in the Derwent Valley.

The Federal Member for Lyons, Dick Adams MHR, welcomed the funding as good news for the region, which will provide chaplaincy and student welfare services to support students at Glenora District High School and Westerway Primary School, as well as schools at Dunalley, Nubeena, Dodges Ferry and Sorell.

“Many of our local schools in the south-eastern region have been seriously affected by the devastating January bushfires so we’re making sure that students at these schools get all the help they need to continue their studies and achieve their best,” Mr Adams said.

“This funding means chaplains and student welfare workers will have more time available to support students in these schools. Our local schools are at the heart of community life and this extra money to help schools recover is an important investment this Government is making to help communities recover and rebuild,” he said.

Mr Garrett said the government was providing $1.47 million to support students from schools seriously affected by the fires and floods that occurred earlier this year in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania. “As part of the initiative, $814,000 will assist up to 74 schools in Queensland, $286,000 will be provided to help up to 26 New South Wales schools, $286,000 will be provided to help up to 26 schools in Victoria, and $88,000 will assist up to eight schools in Tasmania to extend support to their students and the school community,” Mr Garrett said.

“This extra funding is another practical initiative available to help school communities around the country and represents this Government’s willingness to work with the states and territories to get better outcomes, especially for people in regional and remote Australia,” he said.

Drop in to learn about the planning scheme

EXPERT advice on the new Derwent Valley Planning Scheme will be available at two information sessions this week. Once approved, this new document will replace the New Norfolk Planning Scheme of 1993. The new planning scheme is intended to be consistent with those of all other councils in southern Tasmania.

All 12 southern Tasmanian councils have approved their draft planning schemes for release for public consultation until July 12. Following the consultation period, the councils will review all comments received and then prepare final drafts for formal submission to the Minister for Planning. The draft Derwent Valley Planning Scheme and those of the 11 other southern councils can be viewed online at http://stca.tas.gov.au/draft-planning-schemes

Comments on the new schemes can be lodged electronically via the website, or in writing to the relevant council. The Derwent Valley Council will hold two drop-in sessions with planning officer Martin McCance on Tuesday and Friday this week, from 3-7pm in the council social rooms, Circle St.

Luke Joseph at Tyga FM earlier

UPDATED: TODAY'S special guest on the Tyga FM Weekend Sports Wrap is Luke Joseph who will play his 200th senior game for New Norfolk  later today. Tune in to 98.9FM from 8am.

The former Glenora District High School student has played 97 reserves matches for the Eagles and is a loyal stalwart of the club.

With a total of 297 games so far, Joseph is in reach of the record of the most games played for the New Norfolk District Football Club, which is currently held by Michael Eiszele with his tally of 334. Interestingly, Eiszele broke the record held by his late uncle, "Boy" Wilton.

New Norfolk tipped in Claremont replay

New Norfolk v Claremont at Boyer – 2pm Saturday

THE Claremont Magpies will be hoping to start the second half of their 2013 season campaign with the same result as Round 1 against reigning premier New Norfolk in a game where both sides will be keen for an additional four points and bragging rights from their meetings in the roster season, as they could be sure to meet at some stage in the 2013 finals.

The Magpies have excited the competition in the first half of the 2013 season with eight wins and have executed their game plans well under coach Kim Excell and you would expect another disciplined performance against the ladder leaders at Boyer Oval. Nathan Brown is the prime mover for Claremont and will need to be well held along with the highly rated young ruckman Ashton Arnold.

New Norfolk has an outstanding record at home and they should continue to be the pacesetter this season in a close fought encounter. New Norfolk’s younger players have been sharing the load to ensure that the likes of Roger Belcher, Nathan Ross and 2012 William Leitch medallist and leading goal kicker Michael Thompson don’t have to always be the match winners.

This should be a close encounter for most of the day but perhaps the reigning premiers may prove a little too strong towards the end of the game.

Pricey postcard

The postcard sold in an online auction.

A CENTURY-OLD postcard featuring scenes of New Norfolk has sold for more than $40 on eBay tonight.

Offered for sale by a Launceston seller, the unused postcard was dated 1908 and featured five views of New Norfolk. It sold for $3.67.

On the front are three familiar scenes of the River Derwent as well as a fourth image showing St Matthew's Anglican Church. The fifth image, with pride of place in the middle of the postcard, is a rare representation of the clock tower (K Ward) that once stood in the grounds at Willow Court. This substantial building was demolished in 1965.

New Norfolk v East Coast Bombers at Boyer

NEW Norfolk made it eight wins in a row with a massive victory at home against the East Coast Bombers. The Eagles should take a lot out of the result with a big victory against a team that has a reputation for strong performances against the top teams this season, particularly given the margin was only 18 points at quarter time.

The game was quickly over after the second quarter as the Eagles stamped their authority, kicking 7.4 to the Bombers’ 1.4. Michael Thompson dominated the scoring and was back to his best for New Norfolk with 10 majors. Thompson and the prolific ball winner Nathan Ross both played excellent games for their club.

A disappointed East Coast Bombers coach Brett Copping would have been hoping to prove they were a real finals contender but they lacked the firepower to compete with the SFL’s leading team to finish up 108 points short. Ruckman Andrew Rae finished up being East Coast’s best player on the day.

In the Reserves game earlier in the day New Norfolk were victors by 155 points. The Eagles also took out the Colts in the variation game against Claremont on Friday night at Abbotsfield Park by 17 points.

On the big ground of Boyer Oval on Saturday, the New Norfolk Under 16s were exposed to a lack of fitness and commitment, going down to the more determined North Hobart by three points.
The Eagles played three good quarters of football, but ran out of legs to be eventually over run by the never-say-die Demons.
New Norfolk got off to a great start and in the first quarter kicked 3.1 to the Demons' three behinds. In the second quarter the Eagles still held a lead, but were out scored 1.4 to 2.1. After the half-time break New Norfolk continued to show some good passages of play and held the Demons scoreless while kicking one goal themselves to hold a handy lead of 19 points.
The final quarter saw the match change dramatically and from here New Norfolk was totally outplayed. The Eagles shut up shop, kicking just one behind while North Hobart pilled on 3.5.
For the second match in a row the Eagles went down by less than a goal and with finals not that far away they will be looking to get back on the winners list. The Eagles will need to have a big week on the training track to regain the fitness and commitment they showed earlier in the season that saw them string a number of victories together.

Junior soccer - June 15 results

THE coaches of New Norfolk's junior soccer teams report on last weekend's matches.

Under 6 Black played a good game in trying conditions of wind and rain against Moonah Primary. Stephanie Judges and Amber Rainbird each scored a goal. Special thanks to Cody’s mum Aileen Britten for the quick dash to buy some umbrellas!

Under 6 White played at home against New Norfolk Under 6 Red in more favourable weather conditions than other grounds experienced. Brady was lightning fast running the ground well and true to form Tristan was a great goal scorer for the team.

Under 7 Red had a great game against Metro at home before any rain fell. Nayte, Caitlin, Makayla, Daniel and J’Khobi all ran really hard and passed the ball around extremely well.

Under 7 Black had its game cancelled due to the weather.

Under 7 White got off to a great start with a four-goal first half but the game was then abandoned due to bad weather.

Under 8 had its game was cancelled due to the rain.

Under 9 had a win over Dominic Gold. It was a great friendly game with lots of running to keep warm.  Goal kickers were Ostyn 3, Aidan and Maddy with her first goal for the season and there was great work in goals by Jacob and Luke. As always Under 9 should all be very proud of how they play as a team.

Under 10 defeated Glenorchy Knights at Tynwald Park. A special mention must go to Jorja for her great defensive work. Well done to goal scorers Blake 4, Jed 3, Levi 3, and Lane, and to all players for playing their positions with great skill. Exceptional game Under 10!

Under 11 played a brilliant game against Derwent United. Unfortunately it was a loss but great teamwork was displayed and special mentions go to Samantha and Jacob who worked tirelessly for possession of the ball the entire game. Everyone deserves a mention this game. Well done everyone. Special thanks to Jake Pullen for filling in as our ninth player.

Under 14C played early against Taroona at the Royal Hobart Showgrounds in atrocious weather. Despite this the team worked really well together and the effort showed on the scoreboard with the game ending in an 11-1 win for us. Goal scorers were Jayden Bartels 3, Daniel Groom 3, Jordan Bailey 2, Blake Priest, Joel White and Josh Russell.  Well done team.

Under 14D won a dogged game against the Cygnet Sea Dragons at Huonville in cold, wet conditions.  Goals were hard to come by but consistent effort going forward eventually saw goals scored by Josh Russell, Jakeb Rhodes, Ryan Browning and Sam Plunkett-Smith to win the game 4-0. Sam Plunkett-Smith, Jack Rose and Aynsley Daft played a great game and contributed strongly to the win.

Council heading to Lachlan

LACHLAN will be the venue for the Derwent Valley Council's monthly meeting this Thursday night. The meeting will be held at the Lachlan Hall, starting with a community forum at 6.30pm. This is an opportunity for ratepayers and residents to discuss any issues of concern. The council meeting proper will start at 7pm and the agenda can be viewed at the council chambers in New Norfolk or on the council website. 

Move to wind up business group

A MEETING will be held early next month to wind up the Derwent Valley Chamber of Commerce after several years of inactivity. The chamber was established in 1954 to promote business in the community for the benefit of the whole community.

Several years ago the chamber was successful in having the Derwent Valley Council establish the New Norfolk Business Alliance established as a promotional group funded by a levy on properties in the town's central business district. It is felt by some that the new group took over many of the chamber's roles, even though the Business Alliance is a promotional group and not a representative body.

Another of the chamber's successful and ongoing projects is the Derwent Valley Business and Services Directory which is published annually as a fundraising project for Derwent Valley Online Access Centre in New Norfolk. The chamber was also successful in obtaining grant funding to improve visitor access at the historic First Fleet cemetery at Back River.

The wind-up meeting will be held at the offices of Derwent Real Estate, 71 High St, at 5.45pm on July 4. All former members and any interested business people are invited to attend the meeting. In an advertisement published earlier this week, former DVCCI secretary Mark Bennett lists the two agenda items as:

1. That DVCCI be wound up due to lack of support from local business, and;
2. As required under the DVCCI Constitution funds currently held in the trust account be transferred to the Business Alliance being the only local body with similar objectives.

Another cooking school in the spotlight

YESTERDAY'S issue of the national daily newspaper, The Australian, included a feature on the latest cooking school to open in the Derwent Valley. Best-selling author and popular ABC Radio contributor Sally Wise recently moved to Molesworth to open the Sally Wise Cooking School. She is the writer of Slow Cooker and A Year in a Bottle, among others.

Four-hour classes at the Sally Wise Cooking School cost $150 per person. Topics include slow cooking, budget cooking, leftover makeovers, gluten-free cooking and preserves. Students enjoy tastings during class, plus morning tea, and leave with samples and an apron. The school's website is at sallywise.com.au.

Heritage partners start on Bronte

The Bronte building at Willow Court

THE initial restoration work at the Bronte building at the Willow Court historic site is being carried out by a partnership involving the Oatlands-based Centre for Heritage and commercial operator Sealasash.

Under the direction of the Derwent Valley Council's Willow Court Conservation Special Committee, Tasmanian-based Sealasash is renovating and draught-proofing the old timber windows in the Bronte building at Willow Court as part of the recently-started restoration works.

The solidly-built Bronte, originally called B Ward, was constructed around 1926 and will house visitor service facilities at the redeveloped Willow Court.

Queen's Birthday honour for Judy

Judy Bromfield

LONG-SERVING Derwent Valley Councillor Judy Bromfield is one of three people with New Norfolk connections who have been recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honours list today. Mrs Bromfield has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to local government and to the community of the Derwent Valley.

Mrs Bromfield, of New Norfolk, was first elected to the council in 1991 and her long service was recognised by the Local Government Association of Tasmania in 2011 with the awarding of the inaugural Life Members' Award for Meritorious Service.

Her list of achievements includes service as the chairman of the New Norfolk Bicentennial Committee and playing a leading role in developments including the Millbrook Rise Boat Ramp, Black Jetty, New Norfolk Hospital funding, and the Lyell Highway upgrade. She has been a guest speaker promoting the role of women in Local Government and has supported initiatives such as the Maydena streetscape project; Maydena hall and swimming pool; Log A Load For Kids; Real Action Forward Thinking program; the Maydena Adventure Hub and Railtrack Rider. Mrs Bromfield has also been a council representative to the Maydena Community Association; Friends of Frascati Community Garden Committee; Autumn in the Valley Festival; and the Australia Day Committee.

Employed as a Teachers' Aide at Ouse District High School for many years, she successfully obtained funding for various projects including student transport, breakfast clubs and excursions, as well as attracting various visitors to the school, varied visitors. Mrs Bromfield has also been a supporter for students transitioning from Ouse to New Norfolk schools as well as for young single mothers. She has also served as a parent representatives on various school and college associations and boards.

Also on the honours list today are Wayne Meech, of Bridgewater, a former member of the New Norfolk RSL who grew up in New Norfolk and joined the army from here in 1966, who has received the OAM for service to veterans; and former Magra resident Jackie Brown who becomes a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to agricultural education in Tasmania through the Bridgewater High School Farm.

Congratulations to everyone being honoured today.

Three big wins for the Eagles

NEW Norfolk stayed on the winners list in Round 8 of the Southern Football League competition with a comfortable victory on the road against Cygnet last Saturday. Senior coach Jon Murray would have been happy with a positive result and victory against a team renowned for strong performances at home, particularly given the scores were level at quarter time.

The game was up for grabs until the last quarter started to progress and the Eagles kicked 4.5 to the Port’s 3.3. Josh Hall led the scoring again for New Norfolk with four majors, whilst Jarrod Horne and Michael Thompson scored three each with Sam Hall and Luke Joseph both playing excellent games.

For Cygnet even the firepower of the SFL’s leading goalkicker Ben Halton who finished with six majors, the Port finished up short as Brad Watson and Sam Dean finished up being their best players on the day.

In the Reserves game earlier in the day New Norfolk were victors by 101 points and they also took out the Colts by 157 points.

In a close game the bigger Southern Storm team came out strong to set up a good lead by quarter time. To the boys' credit New Norfolk slowly closed the gap as the game progressed and fell just short of victory.
The New Norfolk team continuously worked the ball into forward line but could not quite take advantage of their chances. They boys lifted after their performance the previous week and if they continue like this the rewards will come. Well done everyone.
Our next game is at Boyer Oval at 10am on June 15 against North Hobart.

Under 7 Black: Had a bye.

Under 7 White: Had another great game against Brighton Gold. Players showed great teamwork and defensive skills. Josh tried hard all game.

Under 8: Played an awesome game against Dominic at home. With three players down the team rallied around and gave it their best. A big thank you to Ella from Under 7s for filling in and for her fantastic goal. Congratulations to Sam on his first goal and best game. Well done Maiken for another goal.

Under 9: What a morning, what a game. Firstly a big thank you to Luke and Kiara who played a half each for Derwent United. New Norfolk had a win, 10-0. Goal kickers were Jacob 4, Aidan 3, Ostyn 2 and Kiara with her very first goal - the crowd went wild. Well done to Luke and Aidan who had a half each as goalie. All should be very proud of how they played and the great sportsmanship showed on the ground and after the game.

Under 10: Played an exceptional game against Brighton Gold at Brighton. Outstanding effort and teamwork by all players. Well done.

Under 11: Played their best game yet! With no subs each player gave 100% and displayed excellent teamwork. Special mention to our goal kickers Josh, 2, and Cody, 1,  who worked wonderfully as a team. There was some confusion on the final score but it was a great game the our players should be proud of themselves. Well done!

Under 14C: Played a sensational game against Brighton Storm at Tynwald Park, ending the game with a 6-0 win.  The first half was evenly matched with both teams consistently putting the ball forward. The half-time score was 2-0 in our favour. The second half showed our team step up a gear and put constant pressure on Brighton’s defence with another four goals getting past their keeper.  I cannot name any standouts this week as all players were fantastic.  Goal-scorers were Blake Priest 2, Jayden Bartels, Daniel Groom, Jordan Bailey and Joel White. Well done team!

Under 14D: Played Glenorchy Knights at Tynwald Park in an evenly matched and at times very rough game. Both teams took the ball forward time and again but each defence and goalkeepers refused to allow many in. Adam Blackwell always does such a great job in goals and Nathan Coleman’s speed stopped many a charge forward from Glenorchy.  Joel White played his best game of the year until a hamstring twinge took him off the ground. In fact minor injuries on both teams resulting in players off the ground saw the last ten minutes of the game a struggle to try and gain an advantage but not getting it so the game ended in a 1-1 draw. Well done players.

Lachlan cooking school "best in Australia"

THE Agrarian Kitchen at Lachlan has been named the best cooking school in Australia by a leading travel magazine.

Australian Traveller magazine managing director Quentin Long appeared on Channel 9 and WIN Television's Mornings show last week to give his tips on the top five cooking schools around the country.

He saved the best until last, giving a glowing review of the Agrarian Kitchen and the courses offered by Rodney Dunn in the old Lachlan schoolhouse. "It's an amazing cooking school, it's the best in Australia," Mr Long said.

New Norfolk - 60 years ago today

SIXTY years ago today, New Norfolk people joined loyal British subjects around the world in celebrating the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The town celebrated the big day with a float parade in High St, attended by about 9000 people according to the following week's issue of the then Derwent Gazette. The Mercury estimated the crowd at between 6000 and 7000.

The afternoon's activities included a combined church service at St Matthew's, children's activities on Arthur Square, the float parade in High St, motorsport at Kensington Park, bonfires, fireworks and a torchlight procession that night.

Today's 60th anniversary of the coronation will be celebrated with a concert and high tea in the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall at 3pm, hosted by the Derwent Valley Concert Band. All welcome.

DRAFT planning schemes for the Derwent Valley and the 11 other southern Tasmanian councils have been released for public consultation. Over the next six weeks the draft schemes will be available for public inspection and submissions are sought from interested members of the community.

The draft ordinance and the draft zoning maps will be available at council offices and via the internet until July 12. There will also be a number of community information sessions around southern Tasmania, including two in New Norfolk.

Following the consultation period, the councils will consider all comments received and prepare final drafts of their schemes for formal submission to the Minister for Planning.  Access to all twelve draft planning schemes is available here. Submissions are being sought from all those with an interest in land use planning in southern Tasmania by close of business on July 12, 2013. Submissions may be lodged by:

Valley volunteers honoured

AWARDS for service were presented to volunteers of long-standing in the Derwent Valley last week. These Volunteer Week Awards went to:

• Ray Aitchison – for his leadership in projects such as the Millbrook Boat Ramp and Windsor's Corner.
• Vic Barnes – for service to the Lachlan community and the New Norfolk Historical Information Centre.
• Robert Bradshaw – for service to the the Molesworth community.
• Warwick and Sue Evers – for their constant efforts to keep New Norfolk tidy.
• Joan Excell, Judy Gregson and Ken Wall – for service as original members of the Derwent Valley Autumn Festival Committee.
• Neville Fenton – for his dedicated work for the Bushy Park community.
