Burst main cuts water supply

A BURST water main has interrupted water supply to Humphrey St, Peppermint Hill and surrounding areas of New Norfolk this morning. TasWater reported the burst at 9am. Crews are at the scene and the repair time was first estimated at five hours with water supplies expected to return to normal by 2pm.

TasWater has apologised for the inconvenience to customers. Updates are being provided on its website.

1.30pm update: TasWater reports that repairs have been completed and water supply restored.

• TasWater is the new statewide company that replaced the regional company Southern Water that replaced the local company Hobart Water that replaced the service we used to get from the council.

Grand final berth on the line tomorrow

Second Semi-Final – New Norfolk v Claremont

A grand final berth is on the line at Boyer Oval tomorrow as the Claremont Magpies accept the reward of their qualifying final victory and the right to take on minor premiers New Norfolk. Claremont captain Nathan Brown will return from a one-match suspension to lead his Magpies and he will need to be at his best if they are to have any chance against the well-oiled machine which has continued to dispose of all challengers so far this season.

If Claremont can take the field and execute coach Kim Excell’s game plan as they did in Round 1 against the Eagles, they could register another victory and a direct pathway to the grand final. The Eagles will need to consider the challenge of playing the Magpies with the right attitude as the have shown they are the rightful challenger to the Eagles’ title at this stage of the season.

There will be key targets for the Magpies all over the ground with the number one role being to blanket Nathan Ross who can ignite a game in no time at all. The key forwards will be hard to hold as Michael Thompson, Josh Hall and Zeke Gardam can easily open the floodgates in the spacious forward line at Boyer as they have done so many times so far this season.

The Eagles are looking the goods and the expectation is that they will set themselves for another Grand Final appearance come final-siren time on Saturday.

THE New Norfolk seniors and colts sides sat out the first weekend of Southern Football League finals by virtue of their finishing on top of their respective ladders at the end of the home and away season. All three New Norfolk sides will contest finals matches at Boyer Oval this Saturday, with the colts playing at 9.30, the reserves at 11.30 and the seniors at 2pm.

Last Saturday the New Norfolk reserves lost to Claremont at Abbotsfield Park.

SOLAR FUNDING FOR LYONS

A Federal Coalition Government will commit $300,000 to a solar community project across the Lyons electorate. Shadow Climate Action, Environment and Heritage Minister, Greg Hunt, said, “The Coalition will allocate a total of $300,000 for projects to create a solar community. This will include New Norfolk, Bicheno, Sorell, Exeter and Longford. This is the result of strong representation from Eric Hutchinson on behalf of the local community.”

The funds will be made available to community groups to access solar hot water or solar energy and will be available from 1 July 2014. Community groups that could apply to reduce their energy bills include sports clubs, seniors’ clubs, and scout centres.  Projects will be capped at $20,000 each.

“The Coalition recognises the potential to harness power at a local level.  By bringing the community together we can create real momentum and investment in solar which both reduces emissions and electricity bills,” said Mr Hutchinson, the Federal Liberal Candidate for Lyons.

The Coalition’s program will produce a minimum of 25 new Solar Towns and 100 new Solar Schools across the nation. The Initiative is part of the Coalition’s Plan for Clean Air and supports our commitment both to reduce electricity prices while also meeting our climate change targets and supporting renewable energy.

“Labor has announced then scrapped numerous programs, including solar schools, solar hot water rebate and the multiplier on renewable energy credits, creating a roller coaster ride for the industry and customers.  Kevin Rudd’s Solar Flagships is yet to see one project built despite an original promise of $1.5 billion four years ago,” Mr Hunt said.

Good start to U/16s finals campaign

NEW Norfolk Under 16s took their first step in their quest for a premiership by defeating Southern Storm at KGV in the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League elimination final at the weekend. The game was played in blustery conditions which resulted in a scrappy and sometimes low standard game.

Generally the game was a battle between the half-back lines with the ball often falling short of target. To both teams' credit they never stopped trying and should be proud of their efforts. The Eagles now move into a semi final against Clarence who proved too strong for North Hobart in the other elimination final.

THE NNJFC best and fairest count and trophy presentation for the Under 13s, Under 14s and Under 16s will be held at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms on Friday, September 6. Supper will be provided and their will be lucky door prizes. 7pm for 7.30 start. Cost $5 per adult (children free). RSVP to team managers by August 30.

New Norfolk junior soccer results

Under 6 Red played Metro in a very even game. Jade starred with four goals and fantastic skills. Great defence work by Tristan, Campbell and Tobias.

Under 6 Black played an excellent game in strong wind. A great goal was scored by Amber Rainbird and it was a great team effort all round.

Under  6 White had a great game against Moonah at Tynwald Park. The game showed just how hard the boys have been working as a team. Brady was the day’s top goal-scorer with three.

Under 7 Red played Brighton at Tynwald Park. Makayla and J’Khobi scored good goals. J’Khobi scored his while laying on the ground! Great defence by Nayte, Caitlin, Daniel and Mia.  It was a good team effort.

Under 7 Black had its game cancelled.

Under 7 White played a great team game against Metro. The kids have made so much improvement over the year and it was great to finish with a win. Well done everyone!

Under  8 played a good game against Holy Rosary. The first goal was kicked by Luke with Cruez also kicking three and Caleb one. Special mention to Ella who played a great game. Well done Under 8.

Under  9 had a win against Brighton Black. Goals were kicked by Jacob and Ostyn, while great saves were made in goals by Luke and Alex B. A great game was played by everyone. Well done.

Under 10 had a bye

Under 11 had a good game against Brighton. Special mentions to Josh and Nick in goals for stopping some hard balls, and to AJ for his work on the wings keeping the pressure on. Well done all.

Under 14C played Brighton in very windy conditions at Brighton. With the wind behind our backs in the first half we made the most of it by continually going forward and scoring more often than not to have a demanding lead by half time.  In the second half our defence did a great job in the now head wind and the game ended up a win for us 14-3. Trent Nichols, Josh Cahalan, Tom Fulton and Billy Hawkins all played a great game. It was great to see Josh Cahalan being rewarded for his good efforts to score his first goal of the season. Other goal scorers were Daniel Groom with 10 and Josh Russell with three.

Under 14D won a fast paced game against University 4-1. Adam Blackwell made numerous one-handed saves. Good team passing enabled Josh Russell to score three goals. Britney White scored the other goal with a fine left-footer. Well done team!

PETITION AN ELECTION STUNT

Dick Adams, the Federal Member for Lyons dismissed the Liberals petition to break the forest agreement as a cynical election stunt and would not make any difference to the future of the forest industry, but would irreparably damage the markets.

"Over the last few years the whole industry has changed, sawmills have closed, workers are being retrained and the resource is being reassessed. Even if they reversed the agreement, and no further resource was locked up, access to that resource, ability to process and the available markets, have been completely changed and it would be impossible to go back to the past industry. Triabunna mill has closed, the pulp mill has not eventuated yet and there are problems of dealing with waste from the harvesting and processing which still haven't been solved.”

Mr Adams said that the Legislative Council should get on and finalize the legislation so that everyone could get on with the job of transitioning the industry. "We need to encourage new investment, develop new processes and making sure there is stability for the industry to revive and value add to our great resource. The IGA agreement has allowed this to start, we already have one company on the starting blocks to manufacture timber products with reconstituted wood in Lyons Norske Skog in the Derwent Valley is changing its paper type as newsprint is becoming obsolete. By using the agreement money to kick start some new directions, it is allowing the industry to change direction, while other rural industries can start their expansion plans to take up the labour that has been displaced."

Mr Adams said that forestry should not be used as a wedge tool, this major change should have bipartisan support. "My ‘how to vote’ recommendation shows my commitment to stable majority government and I will continue to campaign for that." Mr Adams concluded.

Eagles storm into SFL finals

New Norfolk 18.17 (125) defeated East Coast Bombers 11.11 (77) at Triabunna

NEW Norfolk made it 17 wins from 18 games for the SFL home and away season as they signed off on a week’s rest with a top spot finish the reward after a 48 point win against the East Coast Bombers at Triabunna on Saturday. The result saw New Norfolk declared minor premiers while the Bombers dropped out of the finals race after a turnaround season which saw them take the points in nine of their games with some big scalps along the way.

A three- to four-goal buffer for most of the day was enough to keep the Bombers at bay as the Eagles' key forwards converted their opportunities with “The King” Michael Thompson kicking five majors and Zeke Gardam finishing with four goals. Shane Bonnitcha continued his stellar form in defence while captain Luke Joseph led from the front to be in the best players for the Eagles.

East Coast Bombers coach Brett Copping would have been looking for a home ground win to stay in final five contention with a four quarter performance against the ladder leaders at the Triabunna oval. But it wasn’t to be as the valiant Bombers finished up disappointed after Huonville took their spot in the finals while Ben Allanby and Andrew Rae were clearly East Coast’s best players on the day.

In the Reserves game earlier in the day New Norfolk were victors by 204 points and in the U18s Colts the match ended up 92 points in favour of New Norfolk against Claremont.

Under 16s into the finals

THE New Norfolk Under 16s made the long trip to Kermandie at the weekend where they came up against Southern Storm. This game was very important for the Eagles as a win would position them better leading into the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League finals.

New Norfolk got off to a good start and by quarter time had built a good lead. Following the break the rain became persistent and Southern Storm started to get back into the game. As the conditions became worse the contest became tight but both teams gave their all.

New Norfolk players maintained their effort to come away with a 15-point win which will give the boys confidence going into this weekend’s finals where the stakes are high. A loss will see an end to their year.

Junior footy roster completed

WITH all STJFL roster matches now completed, the New Norfolk Under 11s and 12s season has come to an end as these age groups do not play finals. Both teams have showed great spirit throughout the season and the sportsmanship and endeavour towards was very impressive.

In particular for the Under 12s who played with limited players for a lot of the season, there was great character shown by all players who gave their all to make sure the team stuck together. Well done to all involved, lets hope you are all back next year.

The Under 13s had a great season, just missing out on a finals berth. The team made big improvements from last season and credit must go to coach Ricky Rainbird and his coaching staff for building a team that is working together very well. Also well done to Donna Rainbird for managing the team yet again. I'm sure the boys appreciate your work. Well done Donna.

Congratulations to the Under 14s for finishing on top of the ladder and the Under 16s for finishing fourth. Both teams have had some great wins this season and we will be all barracking for them during the finals. Let's bring home a flag or two you Eagles!

Junior soccer cut short

ALL but two of the New Norfolk Soccer Club's games were cancelled last weekend.

Under 14C played ladder-leaders Beachside E at Tynwald Park. The first half was an exciting, well played game for both teams but New Norfolk just had the edge. After the half-time break Beachside came out firing and New Norfolk was at a loss to stop them. The final scores were 5-3 in Beachside’s favour, with Daniel Groom scoring two goals and Josh Russell one. New Norfolk can play better and will be hoping to regain their confidence for the next game.

Under 14D played a very evenly-matched game with Cygnet Sea Dragons, ending in a 4-4 draw. Best players were Ryan Browning, Jack Rose, Britney White and Nathan Coleman who played to the best of their ability all game. Mention also goes to Adam Blackwell for another great stint in goals and for his courage and strength in shaking off a full body blow that left an opponent on the ground in an unavoidable tangle when both went for the ball. Goal-scorers were Braydon Wilson with two goals and Jack Rose and Josh Russell with one each.

Sheep Graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and westerly winds are expected during Monday night and Tuesday. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts.

Who can it be? No. 4

THIS footballer was born in 1941. He played with Ouse under captain/coach Geoff Burgess in 1962 and 63, winning the club’s best and fairest award in both years. At only 1.62 metres tall and about 70kg in weight, he made up for his lack of size with skill.

He played with New Norfolk from 1964 and was awarded Playing Life Membership for his record of playing 80 senior and 70 reserve games with the Eagles. He remained with the club until 1972. He returned to Ouse as captain/coach in 1973 and again won the best and fairest award.

While at New Norfolk he captained the reserves in 1970 and was that team's best and fairest winner. He won the George Watt Medal for the best and fairest player in the TFL Reserves in 1970 and 71. He finished his career with Maydena-Strathgordon Club after they were beaten in the first semi-final of the SEDFA in 1975.

Katter in town tomorrow

THE founder and leader of the Katter's Australian Party, Bob Katter MHR, will visit New Norfolk tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon, Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans said tonight. Councillor Evans attended Mr Katter's presentation in Hobart earlier tonight and said it would be an honour to have the national leader of a political party in the town tomorrow afternoon. Cr Evans said Mr Katter's visit was not a council event.

On Thursday night the mayor will host an election forum featuring most of the candidates for the division of Lyons at the upcoming Federal Election. The forum will be held at 6.30pm at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms. All welcome.

Weather Situation
An intense low to the southwest of Tasmania will pass to the south of the state overnight and during Monday.

Damaging northwest to westerly winds averaging 45 to 60km/h with peak gusts of 100 to 110km/h are forecast for Tasmania, mainly overnight. Damaging winds are expected to contract to western and southern parts of the state early on Monday, and then ease from late Monday morning.

Drivers are advised that gusty winds will make driving conditions dangerous.

Abnormally high tides which may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas are forecast for the Western and South East forecast districts this evening. High tides occurred around 5pm in Hobart and 7pm at Cape Sorell.

Abnormally high tides are expected again for the Western and South East forecast districts on Monday. High tides likely to be affected are around 8am at Cape Sorell, 6pm in Hobart and 8pm at Cape Sorell.

In the last six hours the strongest gusts have been 157km/h at Cape Grim, 128km/h at Low Rocky Point, 124km/h on Scotts Peak, 107km/h at Swan Island and Cape Sorell, 104km/h at Strahan and 98km/h at Devonport.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:

• Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
• Keep clear of fallen power lines.
• Not drive, ride or walk through water flowing over roads and bridges and obey all road closure signs.
• For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES on 13 25 00.

Sheep Graziers are warned that cold temperatures, rain and strong northwest to southwesterly winds are expected during Sunday and Monday. Areas likely to be affected include the North East, the North West Coast, the Midlands and the Central North forecast districts during Sunday, and the Upper Derwent Valley, the Midlands, the South East, and the East Coast forecast district during Monday.

There is a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 5pm Sunday.

For people in the Upper Derwent Valley,  Central Plateau, Midlands, South East, King Island, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Central North, North East, Western and East Coast forecast districts.

Issued at 10.28am on Sunday, August 18, 2013.

For damaging winds about the whole state and for abnormally high tides about the Western and South East forecast districts.

Weather Situation

An intense low to the west of Tasmania will pass to the south of the state overnight and on Monday.

Damaging northwest to westerly winds averaging 45 to 60km/h with peak gusts of 100 to 110km/h are forecast for Tasmania today, mainly this afternoon and overnight. Damaging winds are expected to contract to western and southern parts of the state early on Monday, and then ease from late Monday morning.

Drivers are advised that gusty winds will make driving conditions dangerous.

Abnormally high tides which may cause sea water flooding of low lying areas are forecast for the Western and South East forecast districts this afternoon and evening. High tides today are around 5pm in Hobart and 7pm at Cape Sorell.

Abnormally high tides are expected again for the Western and South East forecast districts on Monday. High tides likely to be affected are around 8am at Cape Sorell, 6pm in Hobart and 8pm at Cape Sorell.

In the last 6 hours the strongest gusts have been 80 to 90km/h at Launceston Airport, Devonport, Burnie and on Mt. Wellington, 100km/h on Mt. Read and 135km/h at Cape Grim.

The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:

• Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
• Keep clear of fallen power lines.
• Don't drive, ride or walk through water flowing over roads and bridges and obey all road closure signs.

Local legend farewelled

Lewis Arthur Rice
September 24, 1917 - July 5, 2013

BORN at New Norfolk during World War I, Lewis Rice was the eldest son of Arthur and Olive Rice (nee Triffett). Known to many as "Lew", he grew up in New Norfolk and attended the State School before winning a scholarship to attend the Hobart Junior Technical School in 1932-33.

His first job was delivering bread - driving a horse and cart - for Excell's Bakery in Burnett St. He then moved on to making the bread and remained a baker until 1959. During the war years, because he was in a reserved occupation, he became part of the Home Guard. At the end of the war he held the rank of sergeant.

After leaving the bakery he went to work in Lachlan Park Hospital (later known as Royal Derwent Hospital) and stayed there until his retirement. He trained as a registered psychiatric nurse and served for a time as charge nurse of the infamous C Ward which housed the criminally insane until this function was transferred to the Risdon Jail. He later had charge of Ward 4 in the newer part of the hospital, looking after those afflicted by drugs and alcohol.

Lew met his wife Lena while she was working at the hospital and they married in 1938. They were living in Blair St when their first child, Robert, was born. Around this time the couple started their own business, which Lena ran while Lew continued on working. It was a mixed business on the site of Clark's Butchery, selling ice creams, lollies, cordials, afternoon and morning teas and fruit and vegetables. Daughter Janice was born six years after Bob, and the growing family moved from Trevor Tce to live above the shop in High St.

Eventually the business moved to Charles St, just along from the back of the Plaza Cinema. Many movie-goers of the time would remember going out the side door of the theatre to visit Rice's shop at intermission.
By now the family was living across the road from the Charles St shop, renting from the Sherrins. Younger son Ian was born around this time. Lew also worked for Les Bromfield as a bookies clerk and a apart from providing for his family, he was kept busy by his love of music.

He took a great interest in music and as a young man learned to play the saxophone. He went on to play for 70 years. He accompanied many of the town's well-know musicians, including Jock Murrison, Vera Maxfield, Max Whittiker and Stella O'Connor. He played in the XL Orchestra and made a record with them, but there were other early bands inccluding his own Lew Rice Trio.

He played at dances and cabarets, many of them in the Oddfellows Hall. In 1947 he won the open orchestral instrument solo award at the New Norfolk Eisteddfod, which eventually grew into the Hobart Eisteddfod. He was conductor and bandmaster of the New Norfolk Civic Band, a 1950s precursor of the Derwent Valley Concert Band that played at all the town's major events such as Anzac Day. Lew continued to play right up until last year, performing for "the old people" as he called playing at Corumbene and other nursing homes.

Lew loved golf and played every Wednesday and would stay on and play cards afterwards. Many of his friends and his five younger brothers passed on, but Lew always seem to have new people to play with. He also enjoyed his fishing trips, often to Lake St Clair.

Widowed in 1987, Lew dearly loved his grandchildren and great- grandchildren and took a great interest in all they did and was equally proud of their musical and sporting achievements. Living to almost 96 years of age, Lew retained a great knowledge of the town. He was an icon and knew so much and was respected by so many.

Lew's largely-attended funeral service was conducted by celebrant Celia Hooker who described him as a wise man with integrity. "He shared special moments with people that were precious. How many young married people danced their first waltz to his music?" Mrs Hooker said. "He will be missed by so many, and our town was rich for having him in it," she said.

Lew Rice is survived by his children Bob, Jan and Ian; grandchildren Stewart, Anita, Adam, Kirsty, Christopher, Erica, Mikeal and Cameron; and great-grandchildren Mitchell, Nathan, Ewan, Gabriel, Lelan and Zeke.

East Coast Bombers v New Norfolk at Triabunna, at 2pm Saturday

FOOTBALL returns to Triabunna this weekend as New Norfolk hits the road for the final roster match of the season to meet the East Coast Bombers. New Norfolk is the hottest ticket in football at the moment and with top spot on the SFL ladder secured no matter the result of this round, the first week off during the finals could not come at a better time to allow some recovery from the 18 rounds.

If New Norfolk can take the field still delivering on the same game plan as shown over the last two months, it should register a comfortable victory as has been the case in all but one game this season. But they will need to consider the challenge of playing the Bombers very seriously as the men from the East Coast have provided some real competition in the first half of this season and are in a battle with Huonville for the last spot in the finals.

A closely marked target for the Bombers will obviously be “The Weapon” Nathan Ross who was best on ground last week against Cygnet and seems to have the measure of every player who is assigned the task of stopping him. The Bombers are strong opponents at home but the tip is the Eagles will win by six goals and enjoy a week’s break before the second semi-final.

Westerway's walk on the wild side to end

WESTERWAY students will have a safer walk to school thanks to the State Government and Derwent Valley Council. Infrastructure Minister David O’Byrne has announced 18 projects funded under a new program that will protect vulnerable road users. This includes two projects in the Derwent Valley municipality, which are:

• Humphrey St, New Norfolk: aluminium walkway over Lachlan Creek, with connecting footpaths, $100,000.
• Gordon River Rd, Westerway: 400m of footpath adjacent to the road, near the school, $180,000.

Derwent Valley Council general manager Stephen Mackey told tonight's monthly meeting that the council would contribute about $30,000 to the Humphrey St bridge project and about $70,000 to the Westerway footpath.

In a statement, Mr O’Byrne said the government money would come from the $1.5 million Vulnerable Road User Program, funded through the Road Safety Levy. The selected projects would particularly support pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

“While our road toll has reduced to record lows in recent years, one in four people killed on our roads, and one in three people seriously injured, are vulnerable road users,” Mr O’Byrne said. “Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists have a higher risk of being severely injured in crashes, because they’re completely unprotected.”

Mr O’Byrne said the successful projects had been selected for best meeting the program objectives and would be delivered during the current financial year.

Lower Derwent's big wet

THE Bureau of Meteorology's flood watch for the Huon and Lower Derwent rivers was cancelled this morning but rain continued for much of the day.

In the Lower Derwent, particularly about the Styx and Plenty catchments, rainfall totals of up 38mm were recorded in the 24 hours to 9am today. High levels are currently being observed in the Styx and Tyenna rivers, but minor flooding is not expected for the Lower Derwent river.

Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard where river and stream levels are high over the next few days.

Long ride home to Cygnet

NEW Norfolk maintained its dominant form in Round 17 of the Southern Football League home and away season with a massive victory at home against Cygnet. Senior coach Jon Murray would be happy with his players' consistent form against all teams heading into the finals.

New Norfolk finished with the four points against a Cygnet team which should have been determined to throw everything at the Eagles in an effort to stay in the hunt for a finals berth. The game was never really a true contest as at half-time the Eagles had already amassed a 58-point lead, with Cygnet kicking only 1.3 to half-time including a scoreless second quarter.

In the second half it was all one-way traffic as New Norfolk piled on 22 goals from 31 scoring shots compared to the whimpering Port’s 5.5. Josh Hall led the scoring for New Norfolk with seven majors whilst regular stars Nathan Ross kicked six and Michael Thompson scored five goals. Ross and Shane Bonnitcha both played outstanding games.

Cygnet coach Matt Tyrell would have been hoping to get back into final five contention with an improved performance against the league leaders at the Boyer fortress, but even the firepower of the SFL’s leading goalkicker Ben Halton - who finished with two majors - was restricted as Cygnet finished up a dejected group of travelers back to the Huon Valley. Adam Duggan and Sam Dean were clearly Cygnet’s best players on the day.

In the Reserves game earlier in the day New Norfolk were victors by 105 points. The Eagles also took out the Colts game by 133 points.

Under 16s ready for the finals

THE New Norfolk Under 16s came up against the undefeated Lindisfarne last weekend. The Eagles came out in a positive and confident manner, taking it right up to the ladder leaders. By half-time Lindisfarne held a slight lead but New Norfolk was looking to cause an upset.

As the second half progressed Lindisfarne slowly increased their lead but to New Norfolk's credit they continued to put in but Lindisfarne eventually ran out winners by 43 points. Torne Oates put in a fine four-quarter effort.

This improved effort should give the boys confidence going into the final roster game this weekend. This game is against Southern Storm at Kermandie at 2pm on Sunday.

Junior football update

NEW Norfolk's Under 14 and Under 16 teams progress to the finals of the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League following their final roster matches last weekend. The Under 8s, Under 9s and Under 10s played their final games on Sunday, ending another great season. Under 11-13 play their games this weekend.

There was a great roll up at the annual NNJFC Adult/Son Breakfast on Saturday morning at the NNDFC. Glenorchy senior coach Ben Beams came along as guest speaker and the breakfast was provided by the New Norfolk Old Players Association. This event continues to be a real highlight for the junior footballers and a big thank you must go to Michael Graham for organising yet again. Well done Michael.

The NNJFC Best and Fairest count for the Under 13s, Under 14s and Under 16s will be held at the New Norfolk District Football Clubrooms on September 6. Trophies will be presented, supper will be provided and there will also be lucky door prizes. The cost is $5 for adults (children free). RSVP to team managers by August 30.

In a top of the table clash, New Norfolk Under 14s defeated Sorell in what ended in a tight encounter. New Norfolk kicked away early and kept Sorell to just one goal by three-quarter-time while kicking seven.
The last quarter saw Sorell fight back, kicking five goals to New Norfolk’s single behind, but this wasn’t enough by Sorell with New Norfolk hanging on for a 10 point win and top spot on the ladder. Congratulations to Jake Campbell on playing his 50th Game. Well done Jake.

Three rounds left for junior soccer

WITH just three rounds left for the junior and youth soccer, New Norfolk players are looking forward to their trophy day on September 7. This will be held at 11am in the rotunda at Tynwald Park and the committee looks forward to celebrating another good season of soccer with coaches, players and parents.

Under 6 Red played a great game in cold, rainy weather last Saturday. Campbell scored one goal while Tristan came close to his first goal of the season and Hunter showed great speed.

Under 6 Black played a good game against Bagdad in cold conditions at Bagdad, with Amber Rainbird scoring one goal in the second half and Lucy Gleeson playing her best game yet.  An all-round good team effort.

Under 6 White was eager to play but the other team didn't turn up, which was a little disappointing for the kids.

Under 7 Red had a good game in the cold - only four on three against Holy Rosary. Nayte kicked a great goal and Makayla kicked four in a good effort.  The defence and passing from Mia, Caitlin, Nayte and Makayla was great.

Under 7 Black played a tough but even game against Brighton Maroon. Congratulations to the goal scorers Hamish, Jacob White, Jacob Priest and a couple for Jack. Great defence and attack work, boys.

Under 7 White played great game against Metro despite the wet conditions. Great defence work by Josh, Ella, Cale and Jake kept Metro scoreless with Cale also kicking four goals.

Under 8 had a good game against Brighton in the rain. Abby and Luke saved some good goals. Cruez and Maiken were the goal scorers. A special mention to Cruez for being hit in the face with the ball and playing on.

Under 9 had a very muddy game. Although there were no goals kicked by our team there were some great saves made by Luke and Aidan in goal. Everyone worked really hard for the whole game, including Austin M who played his best game for the season. Well done kids and good luck mums getting that mud out...

Under 10's game was abandoned due to the weather.

Under 11 played their best game of the season in the pouring rain against the Glenorchy Knights. It nearly ended in a draw with the Knights scoring two very lucky goals in the final minutes. It was a brilliant effort considering we were down on players. Well done to Nick, Kasey, Lillie, Josh, Cody, Jacob, Jacob & AJ!

Under 14C played against a tough Beachside B team at Sandown Park. Although our team didn’t play their best it was pleasing to note that they never gave up either. The back line was kept busy throughout the game and Daniel Groom was all over the ground, taking the ball up forward to score his own goal and assist in another by Joel White.

Under 14D narrowly lost to Glenorchy Knights 5-4. It was a well-played game with good ball feeding done by the back line to the forwards with Sam Plunkett-Smith having a few good runs down the field. The game was played in very trying conditions at the Royal Showgrounds. Goals scorers were Josh Russell and Jakeb Rhodes one each and Campbell Evans with two.  The game was unlucky not to be a draw - well done team.

A Flood Watch continues for all Northern river basins the Huon River and now includes the Lower Derwent.

A complex area of low pressure will persist to the south of Tasmania for the next few days. A cold front is crossing currently Tasmania. The cold front has brought moderate to heavy rainfall over the Northern catchments with rainfall totals of up to 40mm being recorded. Further falls of up to 20mm possible.

Stream and river levels are now occurring in the Northern River catchments.

There is potential for minor flooding to develop late Tuesday into Wednesday along streams and rivers in the Northern river basins

A Minor Flood Warning is current for the North Esk, Meander and Upper South Esk Rivers.

In the Huon catchment 15 to 30 mm of rainfall has been recorded. This rainfall will cause river level rises and with the forecast rainfall there the potential for minor flooding to develop early Wednesday.

In the Lower Derwent particularly about the Styx and Plenty catchments rainfall totals of 20 to 30mm has been recorded.

The Lower Derwent is saturated from recent rain, the rainfall to date will cause rises with the potential for minor flooding to develop early Wednesday along in the Styx and Plenty and Lower Derwent.

Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard where river and stream levels are high over the next few days.

An area of low pressure will pass to the south of Tasmania overnight, with an associated cold front to cross the state from the west this evening and overnight.

Damaging winds around 50 to 60km/h with peak gusts of 100 to 110km/h are forecast for the whole state this evening and gusts of 120km/h are possible about the west coast in thunderstorms. Damaging winds are expected to gradually contract to the far northeast early on Wednesday.

Drivers are advised that gusty winds will make driving conditions dangerous on many roads around Tasmania.

Scotts Peak had a gust of 141km/h at 4.34pm. About other elevated and exposed areas in western and southern Tasmania, gusts of 110 to 120km/h have been recorded this afternoon. A gust of 96km/h was recorded at 2pm in Hobart.

Roads Closure, Roads Affected By Snow, Highlands and West Coast Areas

Police have received reports that snow and ice has made driving hazardous on all roads in elevated areas. Motorists using elevated roads should reduce speed and proceed with caution. In particular:

• Highland Lakes Rd from the Steppes through to Golden Valley is 4WD only.
• Marlborough Rd and Poatina Rd should be accessed by 4WD vehicles and light vehicles with chains only; due to heavy snow in the area.
• The Lyell Hwy at Mt Arrowsmith is blocked as two B Double semi-trailers have jack-knifed due to icy conditions and snow. The highway will most likely remain closed until the morning.
• The Murchison Hwy is covered by approximately 75mm of snow near Waratah. Local police report that snow and ice are on the highway from Hampshire to Tullah.
• The Belvior Rd and Cradle Mountain Rd are similarly affected by ice and snow and should only be used by 4WD vehicles or light vehicle equipped with chains.
• The Anthony Rd is closed to all traffic due to thick snow. The road is closed at both ends.

New Norfolk v Cygnet at Boyer at 2pm Saturday

THE Eagles return home to Boyer Oval this weekend to host Cygnet after going through the motions against the other team from the Huon Valley last weekend. How will Cygnet plan to stop the team that has won 15 on the trot and at the same time keep their faint finals hopes alive?

New Norfolk has lost only one game so far this season and the team is coming off huge victories over all-comers. All the same, Cygnet must believe they have a chance of causing a boil over on the road where New Norfolk are an even tougher opponent.

The story is the same as always. Cygnet will simply need first hands on the football and to deliver options to the two key forwards in SFL leading goal-kicker Ben Halton who has 74 for the season and Michael Darcy to stay in the contest in each quarter to attempt what no-one has done since April.

It’s expected that the Eagles will be too strong once again as they continue their lead-up to finals action. A win would all but secure the minor premiership with one more round to go after this one.

HUONVILLE hosted New Norfolk as the Eagles notched up their 15th victory in succession and stayed two games clear in top spot after going through the motions to register a 43 point victory. The result saw Huonville slip two spots outside the final five from this loss.

The Eagles would be comfortable with three of their quarters, particularly given their dominance in the second when they scored six goals to the Lions' solitary behind. The Eagles finished with a seven-goal second half and didn’t allow Huonville any opportunities to get going during the last three quarters of game.

Michael Thompson delivered business as usual up forward with four goals whilst both Simon Crane and Nathan Ross chipped in with two majors each. Crane, Kurt Styles and playing Coach Jon Murray were named in the best players for the team.

Huonville would have hoped to return to their home ground winning form against New Norfolk but the Lions have not been able to put four quarters of football together regularly this season and now must win their last two matches to be in the finals mix. Adam Johns was the Lions' best player and Cameron Johns was again the leading goal kicker with three goals.

In the Reserves game earlier in the day New Norfolk were victors by 103 points while in the Under 18s game Huonville defeated New Norfolk by 13 points.

The breakfast will be hosted by the New Norfolk Football Club Past Players, with guest speakers and lucky door prizes, and all will receive a ticket to the New Norfolk v Cygnet game later that day at Boyer Oval. The time is 8am for an 8.30 start and the cost is $5 for adults (children free).

Junior soccer results

DETAILS of the New Norfolk junior soccer matches from the weekend of August 3.

Under 6 Red played a good game against Derwent at Tynwald Park. Well done to all players.

Under 6 Black had a good game against Brighton. Amber Rainbird scored a great goal and Gemma White put in a top effort for the day. Well done team.

Under 6 White played a fast-moving game against Holy Rosary at home. Liam, Anthony, Will and Tristan all scored goals for the team, while Brady and Anthony both showed some really great defensive skills.

Under 7 Red played Under 7 Black at Tynwald Park. It was a fast game, with goals scored by Mikayla and J'Khobi, and some great attack and defensive work by Nayte, Caitlyn and Mia. A great team effort.

Under 7 Black played fellow New Norfolk team Under 7 Red. It was a lot of fun and a great match as friends played friends. Congratulations to Jacob Priest, Jacob White, Hamish and Jack for all scoring a goal or two. Also a big thank you to Tristan for subbing for the team.

Under 7 White played a great game against Derwent United. Good pressure and teamwork from all players. A special mention to Joshua Kelleher who kicked his first goal, well done Josh! Cale also scored a couple.

Under 8 played their best game for the season. Well done to Abby and Caleb for subbing for Glenorchy. Goal scorers were Cruez with 2, and Oliver and Abby with one each.

Under 9 went down to Dominic Black, 4-2. Both our goals were kicked by the birthday boy Ostyn,. Luke and Aiden had a half each as goalie and made some amazing saves. It was a fast and furious second half with special mention to Jacob and Maddy who were so close to kicking goals. Well done everyone.

Under 10 defeated Brighton Maroon at Tynwald Park. It was a well-contested game with Jed showing great skill and sportsmanship throughout both halves. Goal scorers were Jed (2) and Levi. Well done Under 10s.

Under 11 played a really good game against Moonah Primary. I am not sure what the final score was but it was close. Special mentions to Monique for putting the pressure on in the second half and to Nick who did well for his first time in goal. The Moonah coach commended our team's ability to hold their positions and was impressed with their work considering we were one down the first half and then two down in the second. Well done.

Under 14C had a fantastic game against the Tilford Zebras. Parents and coaches had the pleasure of watching two very evenly matched teams take it up to each other, going goal for goal with some great teamwork skills on show. There were no stand-out players this week as everyone put in 100% effort but a highlight was when Daniel Groom took the ball all the way from defence to score a goal for himself! New Norfolk prevailed 4-3 in the end with our goal scorers Lachlan Farah 2, Daniel Groom 1 and Blake Priest 1. Well done team!

Under 14D played New Town Eagles at Tynwald Park with New Norfolk ending up the winners 3-2. Sam Plunkett-Smith and Ryan Browning played extremely well. Aynsley Daft showed his usual acrobatic skills while Joel White also played well and was unlucky not to score a goal. Goal scorers were Sam Plunkett-Smith, Jakeb Rhodes and Braydon Wilson.

ON August 16, 1933, at a meeting of the Southern Country Association Independent Investigation Committee at Gretna, the New Norfolk Football Club was fined five pounds ($450) for failing to send representatives to a  meeting of the committee and for permitting a representative to make a false statement at an earlier meeting.

In a roster match a week or so earlier, a Bothwell player had been reported for striking number 13 of New Norfolk, but New Norfolk representatives had claimed that number 13 guernsey was not worn on that day. Nine witnesses gave evidence that guernsey number 13 had in fact been worn by a New Norfolk player.

No lower limit for Lachlan Rd

A REDUCED dusk to dawn speed limit would not be approved for Lachlan Rd, the Derwent Valley Council heard at its July meeting. Responding to a petition from more than 70 Lachlan residents seeking appropriate wildlife signage on Lachlan Rd near its junction with Ringwood Rd, general manager Stephen Mackey said the relevant State Government department would not approve a "dusk to dawn" zone.

The same issue had arisen at the previous month's council meeting, when mayor Martyn Evans said he would support a 45km/h dusk to dawn limit on Lachlan Rd.

Mr Mackey said council works manager Stewart Taylor had investigated the matter and had been advised that the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources would not approve the request. Mr Taylor said the "dusk to dawn" signage related to the amount of roadkill and traffic accidents in an area and there was no record of any accidents due to wildlife.

The council and DIER were instead looking at standard wildlife roadsigns for the area.
