First win to the Panthers

A FABULOUS home performance from New Norfolk's senior soccer side saw it convincingly beat South Hobart 5-2 on Sunday.

Goal scorers for New Norfolk were Ollie Chaplin 2, Josh Young, Tom Shepherd, and an own goal by the opposition.

"The entire team played extremely well, showing improved teamwork in what was a volatile match," coach Colin Banks said. The Panthers will take on Barnstoneworth Golden Gordons at 2.30pm this Sunday at Wentworth Park, Bellerive.

House fire controlled

A PERSON was treated for smoke inhalation at a house fire in New Norfolk tonight, ABC Radio News reports. Medical assistance was provided at the scene by Ambulance Tasmania. Police and fire officers remain at the scene in lower Blair St.

NEW Norfolk continued its domination over its nearest neighbour Brighton with another powerful display at home to eventually run out winners by 105 points in very wet, windy and cold conditions at the Boyer Oval on Saturday.

In very difficult conditions, the first quarter was fairly even and it was late in the term before Eagles took over late in that term. After Brighton made an encouraging start to the game, New Norfolk led by just eight points at the first break.

In the second term the Eagles completely dominated the game, piling on 10 goals to blow the game apart and in effect it was all over at half time as New Norfolk held a 66 point lead. The Robins were struggling up forward and registered only one major by half time.

The young Brighton side continued to run out the game in the second half and whilst they were overwhelmed by the strong-marking New Norfolk forwards, they still battled hard and stopped the game from being a heavy loss. The Robins are still showing signs of improvement but they were undermanned against the stronger and more experienced Eagles.

Best players for the Eagles were new recruit Wilson, Tonks, and a good return to form for Bonnitcha, whilst key forwards kicked multiple goals with Thompson bagging 4, Hall and Booth each in an even performance. Best for Brighton were Williams, Daly and Bailey as they strive to register their first win of the season.

Heritage house open this Sunday

Frescati in its heyday.

THERE will be an open day at historic Frescati House in New Norfolk this Sunday afternoon as part of the Tasmanian Heritage Festival.

The Friends of Frescati will welcome visitors to the house and surrounding garden from 11am-3pm, providing a rare opportunity to see inside the building.

Frescati is a weatherboard house built by Colonial Secretary John Burnett in 1834. The Friends are particularly keen to collect memories of the house and its surroundings. Any photos and memorabilia will be particularly welcome.

Frescati is off The Avenue at Willow Court. The Friends of Frescati also welcome new volunteers to help with the heritage garden around the house.

THE recently formed New Norfolk senior soccer side lost to Barnstoneworth Scrappers 7-3 in their Division 4 clash at Wentworth Park, Howrah, last Saturday.

Goal scorers for New Norfolk were Josh Young, Tom Shepherd and Brodie Gleeson on debut.

"Despite the loss, the team showed their skill on the ball with an improved second half performance," coach Colin Banks said.

The next match is a home game versus South Hobart at 12.30 tomorrow (Sunday) at Tynwald Park. Spectators most welcome.

Anzac Day in New Norfolk

THERE was a good turnout to both of New Norfolk's Anzac Day services today.

Parade marshal Dale Britten said about 350 people had attended the dawn service and an even bigger number was present for the 11am parade and service.

Reverend Celia Hooker from St Matthew's Anglican Church spoke at both services. Musical accompaniment was provided by the Derwent Valley Concert Band and the Derwent Valley Choir.

The catafalque party guarding the New Norfolk Cenotaph was again provided by the 12th/40th Battalion, Royal Tasmania Regiment. Australian Army Major Chris Jacoora was the guest speaker at the 11am service.

At the conclusion of the 11am service, a spontaneous round of applause broke out just as Mr Britten was preparing to dismiss the parade.

New Norfolk RSL president Stephen Ball said a special mid-morning service had once again been held at Corumbene Nursing Home for the benefit of those who could not attend the public ceremonies and this had been a particularly moving occasion.

The parade forms up in front of the New Norfolk Cenotaph.

New Norfolk v Brighton
NEW Norfolk plays at home for the first time this season and will be looking to record its second win in a row when it hosts an improving Brighton on Saturday. Brighton looks to be not far away from its first win of the season but faces a huge task at Boyer Oval.

The Eagles bounced back to top form last week with a big thrashing of Huonville away and with their key forwards back in top shape they appear to be hard to keep to a losing score. The Robins put up a gallant performance last week against ladder-leader Claremont and must keep improving, use their pace to play possession football and make the home side run to get possession of the ball.

The Eagles have a wealth of experienced players and with stronger bodies they will look to take control of the midfield and get the ball in quickly to their forwards in a one on one contest as they know the Robins do not have the defence to match their players.

New Norfolk should be far too strong at home and will record an easy victory. It will be interesting to see how much Brighton have improved from last season.

Claremont v Dodges Ferry
CLAREMONT is back at home and looking to make it three wins in a row when it takes on the improving Dodges Ferry. The Magpies recorded an easy win last week against Brighton but struggled at times and will be looking to play a more consistent four quarters of football. The Sharks were also impressive in defeating arch rivals Sorell and will be at peak fitness and full of confidence. The Sharks will need to get their defence set up with their match ups and will need to tag the key Magpie midfielders if they are to reduce their scoring power. Claremont needs to improve its starts and if it can get the early breaks at home then the visitors could be in for a long afternoon. The classy Magpies should be far too strong at home and it will be interesting to see how much improvement the Sharks can show against the best side in the competition.

Cygnet v East Coast Bombers
CYGNET will be looking to record its first win of the season but faces a tough task against the East Coast Bombers who have plenty of fleet footed players that will enjoy the Kermandie Oval. With two losses this season, the Port they are down on confidence and face a quality undefeated side and need to get off to a good start. Their Bombers should record a comfortable victory.

Lindisfarne v Huonville
LINDISFARNE ventures back to Anzac Park where it plays its best football, taking on the struggling Huonville Lions who are recovering from a heavy loss to the powerful New Norfolk. The Two Blues have plenty of classy experienced players and if these players are allowed space to roam they will control the state of play and create the loose man and will score heavily, especially at home. Lindisfarne should be far too strong and have too much firepower up forward for the Lions and hopefully the opposition play a more accountable brand of football and stay in touch with the home side for a long period.

Sorell v Hobart
HOBART will be confident after its big win last week when they travel to take on Sorell in what should be a very even contest as both sides will be desperate for a win to keep in touch with the top six. The Eagles will look to bounce back after last week’s loss to arch rival Dodges Ferry and with their first home game of the season they will be confident of a big chance to take the points in an even contest. Both sides have a lot of new young players and it will be important for both sides to get off to a good start and put some scoreboard pressure on the opposition to get the early advantage. In a game that could go either way, perhaps the Tigers with their new found confidence may just get over the line but they must play four consistent quarters against a side that really lifts at home.

New Boyer paper wins praise

THE first roll of coated magazine paper was produced at the Boyer mill on April 8 and has received positive customer feedback, Norkse Skog president and CEO Sven Ombudstvedt said today.

Releasing the company's latest financial statement today, Mr Ombudstvedt said operating revenue had decreased compared to the previous quarter, reflecting the standstill of the machine under conversion at Boyer. "The converted paper machine in Australia will contribute to gross operating earnings from the second quarter," he said.

Commissioned in 1952 and rebuilt in 1991, Paper Machine 2 (PM2) at Boyer has been converted to produce lightweight coated paper suitable for magazines and catalogues. At present, all of Australia's magazine-grade paper has to be imported.

The other paper machine at Boyer, PM3, has been in service since 1969 (rebuilt in 1989 and 1996) and will continue to produce newsprint for Australia's newspapers including the Mercury and the Derwent Valley Gazette.

Supermarket start "soon"

CONSTRUCTION of New Norfolk's new Woolworths supermarket was due to start soon, last week's Derwent Valley Council meeting was told. Responding to questions from Councillors Judy Bromfield and Damian Bester, the council planner, general manager and mayor offered the following information:

Preparatory site works including soil testing and an archaeological survey had recently been completed.

Nothing of significance was found during the archaeological investigation of the building site.

Construction of the new supermarket was due to be under way "soon".

Similar supermarkets had been completed in six months once construction had started.

Woolworths was seeking to change the location of one of the driveways into the site.

Understood to be worth about $15 million, the project will see a large new supermarket built on the former Royal Derwent Hospital/Willow Court oval. The location is on the corner of George St and The Avenue, opposite McDonald's, but the supermarket will be on the eastern end of the site, closer to Charles St.

NEW Norfolk recorded its first win of the season away from home when it thrashed a disappointing Huonville by 147 points in a very one sided affair on Good Friday.

The Eagles showed they meant business after the previous week's loss when they flew out of the blocks with six first-term goals to grab a commanding 30-point lead at the first change as the Lions struggled with the height and strength of the opposition.

New Norfolk did as it liked for the rest of the game, showing it still had the hunger to finish the game off and never let the Lions into the game as the classy forward line had a day out. Huonville was way out of its depth and a long hard season looks likely after the loss of several key players from last season.

Best players for the winners were many with Wilson, Tonks and Hall with six goals the standout with Gardham also kicking six majors in a polished display. Huonville struggled for consistent players with Sullivan, Chivers and Burgess the best.

CLAREMONT recorded its second win in a row but was made to work hard by an improving Brighton to eventually run out winners by 42 points away from home on Good Friday. Brighton surprised its more fancied rivals with some hard running football as it controlled most of the first term however some costly turnover saw them trail by 2 points at the first change. The Magpies started to assert their authority and took over the midfield battle and with a solid defence they led by 49 points at the last change as a big win looked likely.

The Robins finished the game strongly and should have gained some confidence for next week whilst Claremont will continue to improve and work on its slow starts. Best for the winners were Brown, Jones and Grant whilst Fewkes was dangerous up forward with three goals. Best for Brighton were Collis, Lynd and Burgess in an even contribution from a very young developing side.

HOBART recorded its first win of the season in front of a big home crowd when it eventually defeated a tiring Cygnet by 33 points. Hobart coach Steve Woods told the Mercury: “It's a win the whole club needed. It’s just great for the supporters and everyone involved”.

DODGES Ferry continued its great start to the season with a 32-point win at home against gallant arch rival Sorell. The Sharks got the early breaks in the first term and clearly looked the better side.

THE East Coast Bombers showed they have really improved from last year and withstood a strong challenge from a quality Lindisfarne side to eventually win by 28 points in a high class affair.

Under 6 Red had a bye.

Under 6 Black played a great first game against Holy Rosary Maroon. Well done boys.

Under 7 Red played New Norfolk Under 7 Black. "It was a great game to watch. There were a few big kicks from both sides, well done to both teams - good effort by all players."

Under 8 played a great game against Brighton White at Brighton.

Under 9 had a great game on a soggy field against Dominic. "Everyone gave it their best. Congratulations to Maiken, Cruez and Caleb, our goal scorers. Also a big thank you to Oliver and Abby on filling in for Dominic. Well done guys, we are all proud of you."

Under 10: "A very fast paced game was had by the Under 10s for their first of the season, with a win against Dominic Maroon 3-0. Goals were kicked by Aidan 2 and Freya 1. Some unbelievable defence work from Ostyn, Brock, Alex G, Alex M, Jacob and Kiara. And great stops by our two goalies for the night, Alex B and Luke. Well done guys ... the last five weeks of training has really paid off."

Under 11 defeated Glenorchy Knights 5-0 in an intense game at Tynwald Park. Goal scorers Brayden 4 and Dylan 1. "Great team effort, well done Under 11."

Under 14 played against Nelson at North Warrane.

Seniors Div 4: "It was another great performance from the Division 4 side this week despite losing to Cygnet. The team twice fought back from being two goals down and almost snatched a last gasp equaliser with seconds left on the clock. Standout performances this week from Ollie Chaplin and goalkeeper Alan Kalbfell. Goalscorers were Colin Banks, Ollie Chaplin and Dylan Styles with a spectacular free kick. FIFTY-year-old bottle-tops featuring local footballers are the latest New Norfolk-related pieces of memorabilia to turn up on eBay. A South Australian seller has listed five Coca-Cola bottle-tops dated 1965 and bearing the names and faces of New Norfolk footballers David Andrews, Herbie Henderson, Graham Glover, Steve McSherry and Colin Glover. He has set a starting bid of $20.

The bottle-tops were produced by Coca-Cola Bottlers (Hobart) Pty Ltd and formed part of a series featuring the players of all TFL teams of the day - Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart, New Norfolk, North Hobart and Sandy Bay.

A collector on another website suggests the following New Norfolk players featured on the 1965 series, which followed a similar Coca-Cola promotion the year before: David Andrews, Les Barrett, Alan Beiser, Les Bradley, Barry Browning, Roger Browning, Geoff Burgess, Glen Burrill, Ron Cornish, Tassy Davidson, Colin Glover, Graham Glover, Herb Henderson, Geoff Hill, John Hudson, Peter Hudson, Trevor Leo, Tony Marsh, Graeme McArthur, Steve McSherry, George Menzies, Leon O'Donnell, Paul Plunkett, Garth Smith and Boy Wilton.

SFL ROUND 2 Preview

Huonville v New Norfolk (Good Friday)
Huonville is at home for the second week in a row, trying to open their account for the 2014 season. They face a mammoth task taking on last year’s premiers New Norfolk on the rebound after a heavy loss to Claremont last Saturday under lights.
Huonville was gallant last week against an improved Dodges Ferry, going down by six points and the players should strip fitter this week after a good hard hit out and they will be competitive and determined to make up for last week’s loss.
New Norfolk will also be looking to finish off the game strongly after a good solid three quarters last week after it faded badly in the last term to be overrun by Claremont and will be determined to increase their intensity and pressure for a full four quarters. 
The Eagles should regain some key players from injury and with a powerful forward line, if they can win the centre clearances the Huonville defenders may struggle against their high marking forwards. The Lions need to get the ball to the ground at all costs to use their pace and switch the ball and create the loose man to try to run the ball through the middle of the ground to give their forwards the best chance to score in a one on one contest.
Whilst you expect Huonville be competitive for half the game, New Norfolk’s class and experience should see the Eagles record a solid victory away from home.

Brighton v Claremont (Good Friday)
Brighton stays at home for the second week in a row and will be looking to open its account for the season, but facing the in-form Claremont will be a big challenge. Brighton was easily defeated last week against East Coast Bombers and the new players in the side will take time to gel and we should expect an improved performance this week. The Magpies will be full of confidence after defeating last year’s premiers New Norfolk by 40 points in a great start to the season and they will be full of confidence and will not want to put on a poor display.

Brighton will need to play more accountable football against the powerful Magpies and will need to make sure they get their match ups correct as if they turn the ball over Claremont will score heavily on rebound. Claremont coach Kim Excell will not let his players relax or be over confident after last week’s win and he should have them primed for a big display on Good Friday to keep their momentum going early in the season. You would expect Brighton to put up a good performance early in the game but the strength and class of Claremont will prevail as they should record an easy victory on Good Friday and hopefully the local crowd come out to see what should be a good game of football.

Hobart v Cygnet (Good Friday)
Newcomers Hobart get their second home game in a row and take on Cygnet in a game where both sides will be looking to open their account after being defeated in round one. Hobart struggled in the first week at home against Lindisfarne and with another week’s training under coach Steve Woods they should show general improvement and know the standard of play required in the SFL. Cygnet was disappointing at home to Sorell and will need to bounce back this week and would set themselves for a game they believe they can win to get their first four points of the season. Hobart showed good patches of play last week and you could not fault their endeavour and attack on the football, but they need to improve their skills. The Tigers also need to restructure their forward setup as they were only able to kick five goals last week and they will need to score a lot more heavily if they are to take the points.

Cygnet was good for three quarters last week but faded in last quarter and will need a more consistent effort and more importantly their lesser players need to contribute right across the ground if they are to win the game. In what should be a really close game, perhaps Cygnet with a few more experienced players will see them sneak over the line, but Hobart will be setting itself for a big game at home in front of what should be a good crowd on Good Friday.

Dodges Ferry v Sorell
Dodges Ferry is at home to take on Sorell in what promises to be a close and entertaining game as both sides recorded surprise wins in the first week of the season. Dodges Ferry under new coach Brad Curran showed a fierce determination to win against Huonville away from home and would have gained a lot of confidence and momentum coming into this traditional big clash. The Eagles under new coach David Lewis were surprised winners away from home against Cygnet and finishing off the game strongly their fitness levels will ensure they run this game right out.

The Sharks are always hard to beat at home and play their small ground well by avoiding the wide open wings and moving the ball straight down the middle. The centre clearances will be the key to winning the game as both sides have good forwards who are dangerous in the one on one contest. Perhaps Dodges Ferry may have a few more experienced players and depth at their club and with a vocal home crowd behind them they should appear a little bit too strong for the Eagles, however a win for the away side would not surprise.

East Coast v Lindisfarne
The Bombers are at home and looking for their second win of the season when they take on Lindisfarne in what promises to be an entertaining game against two evenly matched sides. The Bombers were big winners away from home last week against Brighton and they must realise they will need to be at their best if they are to take the points. The Two Blues also had a great start to the season by thrashing the league’s new side Hobart, however it was hard to gauge the strength of their win as it appears Hobart will struggle for class and depth this season.

The Bombers have a dangerous forward line with a good mixture of talls and small goal kicking players and if they can win the midfield battles and move the ball quickly into their forward line the Two Blues may start to struggle to contain their goal kicking power. Lindisfarne also has a lot of experienced players who have played a lot of finals football and their strength and pressure around the contest will give them a solid advantage around the ground. Both sides like to play a fast brand of football however we expect a much closer contest between two sides that look evenly matched. Perhaps the away side Lindisfarne may have a little bit more class towards the end of the game that must be at their best as if the Bombers get in front on their home ground they are very hard to run down.

Change to footy roster

THE Southern Football League season is only a week old but here's the first change to the roster.

The Round 2 New Norfolk v Huonville game set down for this Saturday, April 19, at Huonville, has been brought forward to Good Friday, April 18, still to be played at Huonville.

Match times remain 10am for the colts, noon for the reserves and 2pm for the seniors.

CLAREMONT showed on Saturday night that it has improved immensely from last season with a comprehensive display thrashing of last year’s premier, New Norfolk, by 40 points in a blistering display under nights at their Abbotsfield Park home ground.

Whilst it may have been sweet revenge for last year’s grand final loss to the powerful New Norfolk outfit, the Magpies must now be confident they have recruited well and covered their weaknesses of last season and that will give them confidence to attempt to go all the way in the 2014 season.

With a strong home crowd behind them, the Magpies started full of fire and took the early advantage in the first term and had control for the first 20 minutes until, as good sides do, New Norfolk fought back to trail by just a goal at the first change. The next two quarters became a real one-on-one contest throughout the game as both sides applied plenty of pressure and looked like they were in for a close finish to the game.

Claremont looked to be the fitter side and finished the game full of running in the last quarter with a barnstorming finish and fully deserved the big win over a gallant New Norfolk which appeared to run out of steam and should be nearing peak fitness in the next couple of weeks.

A very happy Magpie coach Kim Excel told the Mercury that the indications of a first win were positive, but added “...we won this round last year and all we have done is win round one this year. We have still got another 17 rounds to go." Excell also said: “it will be bloody interesting when we head to New Norfolk in round 10”.

Excell was really proud of the finish. “We were able to do it because 22 guys applied themselves for the full four quarters and we got over the line”. Defeated New Norfolk coach Jon Murray admitted that Claremont was the far better side of the day. “I think we were a little bit physically under-done with fitness and they got the jump on us. We pegged them back in the second quarter which was fantastic. In the second half we started to get heavy legs ... we made mistakes and they capitalised”.

Claremont centre-half-forward Jake Gillie had a night out kicking five goals while big ruckman Simon Spencer was the dominant big man on the ground and gave his players first use of the ball. New Eagle skipper Mark Horne was superb all night and led from the front in the midfield and new recruit Caden Wilson kicked two goals and battled hard all day against two opponents.

LINDISFARNE started the season in fine form with an away win over newcomers Hobart by 93 points in a dominant display, however it was hard to gauge whether the Two Blues were that powerful or whether Hobart look to be in for a long season after being remitted back into the SFL.

Sorell 16.11 (107) d Cygnet 12.4 (76) 
IN the clash of two teams that had lost several key players from last season, both teams played a good fast brand of football and it appeared a fitter Sorell finished the stronger team and defeated Cygnet by 31 points in a great win away from home.

Dodges Ferry 14.7 (93) defeated Huonville 12.13 (85)
DODGES Ferry started the season under new coach Brad Curran with a courageous six point win away from home against Huonville, which will give the side a lot of confidence coming into the season with a new bunch of players joining to the club.

East Coast Bombers 19.10 (124) defeated Brighton 9.10 (64) 
THE East Coast Bombers opened their season with a road trip down to Brighton and they certainly looked to have improved with a polished display against the Robins, eventually winning by 60 points in a great confidence booster to start their season.

THIS picture was taken at New Norfolk High School of the Grade 8, D3 Class of 1965, with class teachers Mr Singh and Miss Voss who was the physical education teacher at the time.

During the 1960s the school had a large number of students from the Hydro towns of Tarraleah, Wayatinah and Strathgordon who boarded at the Carinya Hostel and amongst this class picture are some of those students. They would travel to New Norfolk on a Sunday evening and return on Friday to their homes in the highlands. Many of those students would leave the school when the Hydro scheme their parents were working on had been completed. Many were from eastern European backgrounds and some may have travelled back to their homelands.

Steve Balmforth who was a member of this class is trying to locate as many of his classmates as possible, mainly from an personal interest point of view and to see just what the class members have been up to in their lives. He would like to briefly document as much information as possible on the class members to include in his recording of his time growing up in the Derwent Valley.

Big price on old invoice

A 150-YEAR-OLD invoice for medical treatment at Willow Court is being offered for sale in an online auction. A seller on eBay has listed the Hospital for the Insane invoice with a starting bid of $499 or a "buy it now" price of $750.

The invoice is dated October 1864 and was made out to Mr Charles H. Leake in respect of patient W.M. Leake for "medical treatment and maintenance" from September 1-30, at a charge of five shillings (50c) per day.

The listing can be viewed on eBay here. Items relating to Willow Court are fetching big prices both online and elsewhere. Most recently, a copy of Troubled Asylum by the late Ralph Gowlland attracted 40 bids and sold for $310 on eBay.

Valley school invited to seek extension

GLENORA District High School has been invited to apply to be one of the first Tasmanian schools to be extended to Years 11 and 12 under the new State Government's education reform proposals.

"I have today written to all rural and regional high schools in Tasmania asking for formal expressions of interest in extending their school to Year 12," Education and Training Minister Jeremy Rockliff said earlier today.

"Our Year 7-12 Implementation Plan will see 21 high schools in rural and regional areas extended to Year 12 by 2018, with all high schools extended by the end of 2024. We will provide a total of $45.5 million over four years towards extending these initial high schools, this will allow for the employment of up to 105 new teachers and $6 million for capital works."

Mr Rockliff said the government aimed to improve Year 12 completion rates by providing choice for students at danger of dropping out post-Year 10. "These are the students who for one reason or another are not making it to college," he said.

In 2001 Glenora District High School started offering a small range of subjects for mature-aged students at the Glenora Skill Centre which was established in a former dental clinic adjacent to the school. According to the training.gov.au website, the Glenora Skill Centre ceased to be a registered training organisation in January 2012.

Based on an Australian Bureau of Statistics definition of non-urban areas, t he following schools have been invited to express interest in the first year of extending to Grades 11-12: Exeter High, Bothwell District High, Campania District High, Campbell Town District High, Cressy District High, King Island District High, Oatlands District High, Penguin District School, Triabunna District School, Woodbridge School, Yolla District High, Cape Barren Island School, Deloraine High, Dover District High, Flinders Island District High, Glenora District High, Huonville High, Lilydale District, Mountain Heights School, Port Dalrymple School, Rosebery District High, Scottsdale High, Sheffield School, Smithton High, St Helens District High, St Marys District High, Tasman District School and Winnaleah District High School.

Planning scheme on the agenda tonight

ENDORSEMENT of a new planning scheme for the municipality will be considered at a special meeting of the Derwent Valley Council at the New Norfolk Courthouse at 6.30pm tonight. In a report to councillors which can be downloaded here, planning officer Martin McCance has recommended that the draft planning scheme be endorsed and referred to the Minister for Planning.

Six years in the making, the new planning scheme has been developed in accordance with the previous State Government's requirements for standardised or "model" planning schemes across southern Tasmania.

The next ordinary (monthly) council meeting will be held in the Court House, Circle St, New Norfolk, at 6.30pm on Thursday, April 17. The public is invited to attend both of these meetings, although question time is not available at the special meeting tonight. The agenda for next week's council meeting will be available online here and from the council office tomorrow afternoon.

Cricket season in review

THE Derwent Valley Gazette's cricket writer, Quick Single, provides his review of the season that was.

IN what seems like a blink of an eye, the 2013-14 cricket season has come and gone and what a season it was! For the Derwent Valley clubs it was their most successful seasons since joining the Southern Cricket Association in season 2008-09.

We saw the rise of New Norfolk I and Gretna II, winning their first premierships in the SCA. New Norfolk II had a very good season, playing off in the 5th Grade finals and showing it will be one of the teams to beat next season. Although defeated, Molesworth I showed it was again a top side, playing off in its fourth successive 2nd Grade grand final appearance. Gretna I showed great fight, playing off in the finals for the second season running. A very young and talented Molesworth II just missed out on the finals, finishing a very creditable sixth. Bushy Park was promoted to 2nd Grade from 4th Grade and did its best in what was a tough season for the club.

There were many individual achievements, but none tops the massive 324 scored by New Norfolk I all-rounder Stewart Rice in Round 11 against the MacKillop Beltas at Tynwald Park. Rice clubbed an incredible 38 sixes and 10 fours in what was a magical innings. At season's end, Rice collected the 2nd Grade best player award by 12 votes. He also won the batting average with 72.36 and aggregate 1013 runs and then was second in the bowling average with 12.00 and 38 wickets. To top it all off, he played in New Norfolk's premiership and was named player of the match with his superb 103 runs and 1 for 9. Rice ended the season with a mammoth 1122 runs at an average of 70.13 and 40 wickets at an average of 12.50, and - get this - a total of 101 sixes and 75 fours! An excellent effort to say the least.

The biggest team score of the season came when New Norfolk I made the mammoth total of 7 for 492 off 50 overs against MacKillop Beltas at Tynwald Park. This was the match where Rice made the 324.

Of the big partnerships of the season, Molesworth I captain Brad Coppleman and Mathew Smith put on 256 for the fourth wicket in Round 3 against Richmond/Cambridge at Boyer Oval. New Norfolk I captain Rohan Heron and Jake King put on 180 for the first wicket in Round 16 against Derwent at Tynwald Park. Molesworth I pair Nick Piuselli and Jamie Adams put on 168 for the third wicket in Round 1 against Montagu Bay at Boyer Oval. One other partnership I would like to mention was that of 106 runs for the eighth wicket between youngsters Brayden Chaplin and Jye County for Molesworth II in Round 7 against McRobies Gully. These two showed great character for such young men and have a great future ahead of themselves.

Players from Derwent Valley clubs did very well in the association awards. As mentioned New Norfolk I player Stewart Rice was named the 2nd Grade best player on 31 votes with Gretna I player Mathew Burns runner up on 19 votes. For the batting it was much the same with Rice winning with 1013 runs at 72.36 with Mathew Burns next with 678 runs at 48.43 and Molesworth I captain next with 564 runs at 37.60. In the 2nd Grade bowling Stewart Rice was second best with 38 wickets at 12.00. Craig Cunningham from Gretna I was fourth with 23 wickets at 13.22. For the best fielder votes Rhys Browning of Gretna I, Geoff Crosswell of Bushy Park, Jamie Hill of New Norfolk I and Brad Ransley of Molesworth I all finished equal third on six votes.

In the 4th Grade awards, Peter Jelkic figured the best in the best player vote, finishing sixth over-all on 13 votes with the winner from Hobart in Nathan Price polling 23 votes. Jelkic did well in the bowling, finishing send with 32 wickets at 9.09 while Matthew Eyles also of Gretna II took 32 wickets at 11.56. In the batting awards, Bruce Emery finished the best for Gretna II with 299 runs at 37.38 and Brian Smith 284 runs at 31.56. In the award for the best fielder, young Brock Nichols from Gretna II was runner up on seven votes.

In 5th Grade young Cody Neads was runner-up best player on 12 votes to the winner Shaun Bennett from Claremont with 14 votes. In the batting, New Norfolk II player Leigh Berry won this award with 471 runs at 67.29. In the bowling, Molesworth's Brayden Hodge was fourth with 27 wickets at 16.78 and teammate Aaron Triffitt was next with 24 wickets at 16.88. The best fielder in 5th Grade was one of the Derwent Valleys up and coming stars, New Norfolk's 13-year-old Nathan Rice with 8 votes. This was a big effort considering so many senior players were in the mix for this award. An excellent effort young Ricey.

Young Player of the Month (Under 21): November, Josh Rowlands, New Norfolk 11 wickets, three catches; January, Cody Neads, Molesworth, 200 runs, four catches; February, Brad Coppleman, Molesworth, 216 runs, five wickets and five catches.

Southern football starts this Saturday

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE
ROUND 1 PREVIEW

LAST year’s grand finalists start the opening round of 2014 with a night game that will give Claremont a chance to seek revenge over New Norfolk. It promises to a very tough and close affair. The Magpies have had a solid pre-season and would now be aware of what is required to win the big games of football. Under wily coach Kim Excell they will certainly improve this season.

The Eagles have some key players and have recruited exceptionally well with some ex-TFL stars signing up to wear the red, white and black. New Norfolk has the best playing list and keeps its regular players hungry for more success.

The Magpies hold no fear of New Norfolk and always seem to grow a leg at home. They certainly shocked the Eagles in the first game of the season last year and if they get off to a flying start this weekend they will be extremely hard to hold out. New Norfolk is traditionally a slow starter and usually takes a few games to gain match fitness. The Eagles will realise this is one of its hardest road trips, expecting a hostile home crowd and maybe a few more spectators to watch this game under lights.

In a game which could go either way, perhaps the Magpies may be a bit hungrier. Well-prepared in terms of fitness, they could sneak over the line but must produce four consistent quarters as the Eagles only need 10 minutes to blow a game apart.

Hobart v Lindisfarne
Hobart is back in the SFL for a second stint and looking to make an immediate impact after the recruitment of experienced coach Steve Woods when they host Lindisfarne at the TCA in what should be a good gauge for the strength of their club for 2014. It may take a few rounds for the Tigers to gel and play as a team, but they will have set themselves for this game. The Blues should be too experienced and strong in the contests and take the points.

Cygnet v  Sorell
Cygnet kicks off the season with a home game against Sorell and with a new look-side they have a great opportunity to open the season with a win. Although the Port have lost some key players from last season, they should be ready for this gamesand should record a solid win but must be at their best as Sorell can see this as a winnable game too.

Huonville v Dodges Ferry
Huonville opens the season with a lot of promise after a good finish in 2013 and coach Chivers will be looking to improve his young list and will expect a first up win at home to kick off the season but a well-drilled Dodges Ferry in may turn out provide a close encounter.

Brighton v East Coast
Brighton is at home for the start of the season and will see this encounter with East Coast as a good opportunity to open the season with a win. East Coast may have a bit too much experience and strength around the contests and should take the points against a motivated and enthusiastic young side capable of causing an upset.

It's soccer season again

Under 6 Red: "Well done to Under 6 Red who played a great game against Brighton Black. You all played an excellent game."

Under 6 Black had a bye.

Under 7 Red: "A great start to the season with a home game against Brighton. Everyone worked very well together showing some great teamwork."

Under 7 Black: Played a good season opener at Bagdad. "It was an all-round good team effort and welcome to players new to the team – Mikayla, Tristan and Oliver."

Under 8: Game was cancelled due to the opposition team pulling out. "The Under 8s still had fun by playing a practice match within their team."

Under 9: Had a draw with Brighton. "Well done to Jenny and Caylin on playing their first games and to our goal scorers Oliver and Cruez."

Under 10 had a bye.

Under 11: Defeated Brighton Maroon at Tynwald Park. "Great play by all team members signalling a fantastic start to the season. Goal scorers Levi 5, Dylan 4, Jed 3, Brayden 2, Josh 2, Lane 1, Jacob 1. Great teamwork by Blake, Ella and Lucy also."

Under 14 had a bye.

Under 16: Played a grading game against Glenorchy Knights. Although they lost it was a good learning experience.

Division 4: In their first game of the season the team achieved a convincing win against DOSA-Friends. The final score was 5-3 with goals from Colin Banks and Dylan Styles as well as a superb hat-trick from Luke Slater on debut. "Saturday 12th is our first home game at Tynwald Park against Cygnet at 2.30pm, come along and cheer us on!"

Farrell's new roles in State Opposition

STATE Labor leader Bryan Green has handed several shadow portfolio responsibilities to New Norfolk’s Craig Farrell. The Derwent MLC lost his role as Leader for the Government in the Legislative Council following Labor's defeat at the March 15 State Election, along with the substantial allowance and chauffeured car that went with the role.

For the last two months of former premier Lara Giddings' administration, Mr Farrell also served as Minister for Sustainable Transport and Minister for Corrections and Consumer Protection. His responsibilities in the new parliament are as the opposition spokesman for infrastructure and for environment, parks and heritage.

Announcing his shadow cabinet last week, Opposition Leader Bryan Green said Labor would get straight to work on holding the new Liberal Government to account. “Labor has a depth of ministerial experience developed during our time in government, coupled with new faces and fresh ideas,” Mr Green said.
