Recent changes to the Local Government Act will result in a complete spill of all elected positions on all councils in Tasmania. The most recent change, passed by both houses of parliament only last week, will now open up the mayoral contests to any person eligible to stand for election. The previous requirement for mayoral candidates to have at least 12 months experience as a councillor has now been thrown out.
The known intending candidates for the Derwent Valley Council are:
- Ben Shaw (candidate for councillor, announced on Facebook on August 18)
- Damian Bester, of New Norfolk (candidate for councillor, announced in newspaper advertisement on August 20)
- Chris Lester, of Magra (candidate for mayor and councillor, announced on Facebook on August 20)
- Wayne Shoobridge, of New Norfolk (candidate for deputy mayor and councillor, announced on Facebook on August 25)
- Phillip Bingley, of Lachlan (candidate for councillor, first election signs seen on August 30)
- Kylie Farrell, of Molesworth (candidate for councillor, announced on Facebook on September 1)
All intending candidates are invited to let us know by emailing newnorfolknews@gmail.com. Please include your name, town and the positions being contested.
