SOME teams got their first win on the board while others made it back-to-back victories in round two of the Southern Cricket Association last weekend. New Norfolk I made it two from two in First Grade with a good win over Derwent at North Warrane Oval on Saturday. Batting first, the Red Caps made the defendable score of 8-212 off their 50 overs. At one stage they were 3-21, but then Nathan Eiszele got things moving with 66 not out, hitting six fours and one six. Harry Booth chimed in with 49 (two fours, one six) while Jason Rigby made 34 with two fours. Booth and Rigby put on 69 in a very valuable partnership. In the run chase, Derwent was bowled out for 141 off 43 overs. Seb Wishart did the damage taking 4-23 (10), including three maidens. Ben Smith 3-20 (10) also bowled well, while Jordan Banks-Smith took 1-15 (6) and Jason Rigby 1-36 (7).
In Second Grade, Gretna I got its first win for the season with a 62-run win over the Sorell Eagles at Sorell. Batting first, Gretna lost wickets regularly, but Aaron Maddox struck the ball well with a good 44, including eight fours. But it was young Luke Crosswell down the order who came up with a match-saving 48no. Crosswell steadied the ship well, hitting four fours and one six. Ben Rainbird made 20 and Jackson Ackerly 18. Gretna finished all out with the defendable total of 168 from 43.5 overs. In reply Gretna was just as good, with its bowlers putting in a great performance. Peter Jelkic could do no wrong, finishing with fine figures of 4-9 off seven overs which included a blinder of a one-hand caught and bowled. Spinner Ben Rainbird did everything right, taking 1-13 (10). Opener Aaron Maddox did his bit, taking two top order batsmen with 2-23 (6), while Jackson Ackerly chimed in at the end with 2-3 off just 1.4 overs. Corey Ransley 1-26 (8) was also good early. Congratulation to Todd Jarvis, who played his 200th club game for Gretna on Saturday. He has now played 115 games for Gretna I and 85 for Gretna II.
In the other Second Grade match, Molesworth I went down to St Anne's at Boyer Oval by 106 runs. Batting first, the visitors posted the good score of 4-254 from their 50 overs. In reply, Molesworth was bowled out for 148 off 35.1 overs. Nick Piuselli made a very good 43, hitting five fours and a six. Brad Coppleman made 23 (one four, one six) and opener Daniel Adams made 17 (one four) while down at No. 10, Jeremy Nichols remained 16no. With the ball for the home team, it was also Nichols with the best figures of 2-28 (9).
In Third Grade, Stewart Rice's excellent century helped New Norfolk II to a big 154-run win over Campania at Tynwald Park on Saturday. Rice clubbed 11 fours and 10 sixes on his way to a splendid 128. I hear one six nearly cleared a tree — and another went over the creek. Campania must have been fuming at the end as Rice was dropped on naught in the second over of the match. Batting with the century maker, Leigh Berry gave great support with a well-made 41. The pair put on an excellent 173-run stand. The Red Caps were 5-256 at the end of their 50 overs. Others to make runs were Nathan Rice with 29 (three fours, one six), Steven Sillifiant with 17, and Jye Bearman 14no (one four). In reply, the visitors were skittled for just 102 off 31.1 overs. Young Nathan Rice was the main destroyer with great figures of 4-19 (6). Veteran Graeme Rowlands also did well with 2-18 (7.1) while Jamie Hill bowled just the one over taking 2-2, and Josh Walsh got 1-18 (3).
Fourth Grade saw Bothwell I make it back-to-back wins with a convincing 155-run victory over Gretna II at Gretna. Batting first, Bothwell got off to a good start with openers Cody Eyles and Adam Clark putting on a 134-run partnership. Eyles batted well, hitting seven fours and one six on his way to 81. Clark was solid making 42. Brock Nichols made 26no, Nathan Eyles 18, Trent Rogers 12 and captain Joey Eyles finished not out on 10. The Bucks ended up with 7-228 off their 50 overs. With ball for the home team, spinner Aaron Browning worked hard taking 4-51 from his 10 overs. Browning teamed up well with keeper Brian Smith, who snared two stumpings and a catch. Tom Allcock with 1-36 (9) and Adam Browning on 1-37 (9) were the other wicket takers. In reply, Gretna didn’t get going and was dismissed for 73 off 27.4 overs. Only two players made double figures with Brian Smith 20 (one four) and young Andrew McKenzie, who gives his all every week, also scoring 20 with one four. For the Bucks’ bowlers, Josh Eyles with figures of 3-5 from 4.4 and Cody Eyles capped a great day taking 3-13 (7). Nathan White did very well also with 2-9 (5) and Trent Rogers 1-25 (4) was the other wicket taker.
In the other Fourth Grade match, Bushy Park recorded its first win defeating Hobart by 38 runs at the Bushy Park Showground. The visitors won the toss and sent Bushy into bat who made the good score of 9/230 off its 50 overs. Keeper/batsman Shaun Fenton led from the front, top-scoring with a well made 86. Geoff Crosswell wasn’t far behind with a fine 64. The pair came together with the score on 4/43 and went in to put together a partnership of 143, getting the team to 186. Ben Triffett’s cameo of 19 was handy at the end setting up the very defendable total. In reply, Hobart we’re going well at 3/111, but then lost regular wickets finishing 9/192 off its 50 overs. After doing well with the bat, Geoff Crosswell cleaned up the Hobart batsman, taking 5-36 off his 10 overs in a great display of bowling. Captain Troy Smith took 1-33 (10), Trent Grant 1-29 (7) and Nicholas Fenton bowled 10 overs for 1-36 . There was one run out. In all, a good team effort from Bushy Park.
Seventh Grade saw New Norfolk III defeat Hobart by 117 runs at Tynwald Park on Sunday. Sent into bat, the Red Caps were all out for 193 off their 50 overs. In reply, the visitors were bowled out for 76 off 29.3 overs. With the bat for New Norfolk, Brad Kemmler top-scored with 32 (three fours, one six), Aaron Triffitt got 29 (one four), and Scott Hutchinson also got 29 (two fours, one six). Liam Kalbfell’s 25 included two fours and one six. Cody Neads made 24, hitting five fours, while opener Nathan Heron got 21 (two fours). With the ball, it was Mitchell Rice doing the damage taking 4-25 from his 10 overs. Jake Stevenson with 2-16 (4.3) and Liam Kalbfell also with 2-16 (5) did well, while Brad Kemmler was equally as good, taking one wicket for just 14 runs from his 10 overs. It’s now two from two for New Norfolk III.
Molesworth II went down to Hobart by four wickets at Risdon Vale in the other Seventh Grade match. Batting first, Molesworth was all out for 58 off 34.5 overs. In reply, the home side had a stutter, losing wickets along the way, but got the job done, finishing 6-60 off 19.3. Molesworth Keeper Josh Nichols top-scored with 19 (two fours) and Blayne King made 14 (two fours). With the ball, all the bowlers tried hard. Captain Jack Evans bowled well taking 2-16 from seven overs, as did Blayne King 1-2 (2), Jake Sorrenson 1-6 (3) and Colby Evans 1-16 (3). With plenty of young players, Molesworth II is doing a great job and a win is just around the corner.
After a big loss in Eighth Grade last week, Bothwell II turned the tables with a thrilling one-run win over the MacKillop Beltas at North Warrane Oval on Sunday . After wining the toss and batting, the Bucks made just 82 from 30.1 overs. In a down-to-the-wire match, they dismissed the home team for 81 from 37 overs. It needed some special bowling from the Bucks and they got it from Stuart Eyles who put on a fine performance, taking four wickets for just eight runs from six overs to clean up the opposition. Brodie White got 2-17 (8), Mark Pearce 2-19 (10) and Rhys Franklin 1-17 (10) also did very well. Mathew Glover with 1-18 (3) was the other wicket taker. With the bat for the Bucks, Michael White top-scored with 23 and Blake Eyles made 15.
