THE first round of the SCA 50-over competition for season 2017-18 got under way at the weekend. New Norfolk I began its 1st Grade season in style on Saturday, crushing Montagu Bay at Tynwald Park by 122 runs — and on the way collecting two bonus points. Winning the toss and batting, the Red Caps made 7-230 off their 50 overs. They lost their first wicket with the score on 11 before Matthew Bowden joined Rohan Heron at the crease and the pair went about building a 126-run partnership. Bowden top scored with a fine 91, hitting four fours and six sixes. Heron got 43, striking the rope on three occasions. Seb Wishart made 24 (three fours) while No. 8 Cody Neads did well, making 31no with three boundaries. The Sharks were never in the hunt and were bowled out for 108 off 37.4 overs. The main destroyer was Ben Smith, capturing 3-22 from his 10 overs. Captain Jason Rigby also bowled well, taking 2-32 (10), while Seb Wishart wasted no time, getting 2-2 (1.4). Graeme Rowlands finished with the good figures of 1-25 (7) and young Nathan Rice got 1-8 (4).
In 2nd Grade, Molesworth I lost to Richmond/Cambridge by three wickets at home. Winning the toss and batting, Molesworth was all out for 184 off 47 overs. Nick Piuselli got 48, including one four and four sixes. New recruit Ryan Banks-Smith also batted well, making 40 with four fours. Sam Triffitt got 12 (one four). In reply the visitors finished with 7-188 off 44.1 overs. Captain Brayden Hodge led from the front with the ball, taking 4-43 (10). Jye Lester with 2-31 (9) and Brad Jarvis 1-18 (4) were the other wicket-takers.
Gretna I went down to the Knights at home in a match that was theirs for the taking. The Knights had first hit and were all out for 182 off 50 overs. Gretna was going well at 4-125 but a major collapse occurred and they lost six wickets for 18 runs to be all out for 143. Zac Crosswell top-scored with 35 (four fours). Aaron Maddox with 25 (two fours) and Todd Jarvis with 23 were the main run scorers. Peter Jelkic did very well with the ball for Gretna, taking 4-30 from his 10 overs. Opener Aaron Maddox bowled tightly with 3-22 (10), spinner Craig Cunningham was just as good with 1-20 (10) and Luke Crosswell took 1-24 (8).
In a rain-affected 3rd Grade match at North Warrane Oval, New Norfolk III defeated the MacKillop Beltas by five runs. Batting first, New Norfolk compiled the good score of 9-200 off its 50 overs. In reply and due to the rain, the home side had the target reduced to 192 to win off 48 overs and got to within a whisker, finishing 9-187 off 47 overs. One player didn’t bat as he had left — which in the end cost the Beltas the chance of a win. Being three players down in the field at the start of the match didn’t help things either. For New Norfolk, openers Jake King 39 (one six) and Leigh Berry 34 (two fours) did very well, putting on a 79-run opening stand. Aaron Drew made 25 (one four, one six), Josh Rowlands 21 (one four) and Josh Walsh — in his first match since injuring his ankle — finished 17 not out. Rowlands and Walsh put on 32 to get the score towards 200. With the ball, comeback kid Walsh sent down 10 overs for great figures of 3-17 with four maidens. Partner in crime Josh Rowlands also did well, taking 2-23 (10) including three maidens . Jamie Hill was the other wicket taker with 2-66 (9).
In 4th Grade, Bothwell I won by four wickets in a revised total in a rain-affected match at Weily Park. The Rockers had first dig to be all out for 106 off 37.1 overs. In reply, Bothwell made 6-102 off 25 overs to take the win. Matthew Eyles top-scored with 28, Nathan Eyles got 19no, Brad Eyles 16no and Kelvin Eyles made 18. The visiting bowlers did well. Nathan White was tight with 3-29 from his 10 overs as was Nathan Eyles with great figures of 2-7 from 6.1. Mathew Eyles got 2-17 from eight overs.
Gretna II lost to Bagdad by seven wickets at Bagdad. Batting first, Gretna was all out for 175 off 49.5 overs. Openers Tom Allcock 52 (five fours, one six) and Jordan Hastie 33 (two fours) got their team off to a good start with a 76-run partnership. Down the order, Jackson Ackerly timed the ball very well on his way to fine 48, hitting six fours. In reply, the home team chased down the runs to finish with 3-176 off 31 overs. Josh Whitford, who fielded very well, was the main wicket-taker with 2-55 (7) and Jon Smith 1-42 (10) was the other.
Bushy Park went down to Claremont by eight wickets at home. Batting first, Bushy was bowled out for just 51 off 19.4 overs. Shaun Fenton, the only batsman with double figures, made 14 and then with the ball took 2-4 from one over. The visitors finished 2-52 off 10.4 overs.
New Norfolk III defeated St Aidans by four wickets at Cambridge Oval on Sunday. The home side batted first in the 7th Grade match and was bowled out for 80 off 37 overs. In reply, the Red Caps lost regular wickets but chased down the target, finishing with 6-81 off 27.2 overs. Young Mitchell Rice top-scored with 19no while Brad Kemmler on 17 (one four) and captain Nathan Heron on 10 were next highest. Liam Kalbfell bowled well for New Norfolk, taking 3-18 (7), as did Brad Kemmler with 3-26 (19) and Mitch Rice 2-7 (2). Dave Mitchelmore 1-16 (8) gave good support and, although he didn’t take a wicket, opener Stuart Muir sent down 10 overs for just nine runs. With the club’s Under 13s also winning on Sunday, New Norfolk got four wins from four at the weekend.
In the other match, Molesworth II played Hobart at Risdon Vale, losing by four wickets. The visitors won the toss and chose to bat, and were dismissed for 58 off 34.5 overs. Josh Nichols top-scored with 19 (two fours) while Blayne King was next best with 14 (two fours). In reply, Hobart didn’t do it easily, but got the job done, finishing 6-60 from 19.3 overs. Captain Jack Evans was the best of the bowlers, taking 2-16 (7). Others to take wickets were Jake Sorrenson 1-6 (3), Blayne King 1-2 (2) and Colby Evans 1-16 (3).
In 8th Grade Bothwell was easily defeated by St Anne's at home, losing by 195 runs. The visitors batted first to be all out for 274 off 39.5 overs. Bothwell was then dismissed for 79 from 24.1 overs. Captain and opener Anthony White top-scored with 20 while fellow opener Adam Clark made 14, Michael White 13 and Stuart Eyles 10. With the ball for the Bucks, Mathew Glover 3-43 (7.5) and Trent Rogers 2-44 (7) were the best of the bowlers.
