Female Eagles take flight

Some of the members of the NNDFC women's team.
HISTORY was made last weekend when the New Norfolk District Football Club fielded a women's team playing for premiership points for the first time. After a false start last year, there is now an Eagles team on the track in the Southern Football League Women (SFLW) competition.

The women took on Claremont at Boyer Oval and while they did not register a score their coach Dean King was full of praise. Posting on social media, he said: "The main object is to have fun and that they did. I am a coach that coaches to have fun and improve. (I am) so proud of the efforts you all put in."

As well as the senior female side, New Norfolk also has girls' teams in the Under 17, Under 13 and Under 11 divisions.

This weekend the SFLW will hold the first of nine gala days for the season, hosted on Sunday at the University Oval in Sandy Bay. The schedule is as follows:

  • New Norfolk v North Hobart, 10.30am
  • The Port v Lauderdale, noon

  • Claremont v Lindisfarne, 3pm
  • Bye - Hobart Tigers
