Molesworth into superbash final

IN an exciting Tier 2 preliminary final, Molesworth drew with City at Pontville. From this a "super over" was played out with three bowlers from each team having two balls each to hit the stumps with Molesworth coming out victors. They progressed to the grand final against Knights.

NEW Norfolk I went down to St Aidan's by four wickets in Southern Cricket Association first grade cricket on Saturday. In the Red Caps' good total of 211, Stewart Rice continued with his good form and made 47 including five 4s and four 6s while Rohan Heron did well with 33. In reply St Aidan's got the total with the loss of six wickets. Kendall Bluett and Jamie Hill were the best of the New Norfolk bowlers with two wickets each.

In the 2nd Grade match at Old Beach, Gretna went down to the home side by 50 runs. Old Beach made the great score of 263 while Gretna did well making 213. For the batsmen, Rhys Browning and Craig Cunningham made welcome returns to form with 66 and 39 respectively while Glenn Blackwell made 38. Corey Ransley and Mathew Burns were the main wicket takers for Gretna with three each.

In the match at North Warrane, Molesworth had a great win over St Aidans by 34 runs with Jamie Adams the difference between the two teams. Sent into bat, the visitors made 8 for 231 off their 50 overs with Adams top-scoring with 71, hitting eight 4s in a good batting display. Jake King gave good support with a well made 48 (5x4s and 1x6). In reply St Aidan's was bowled out for 197. The home team just couldn't handle the Jamie Adams show as he finished with the excellent figures of 10 overs (seven maidens) 3 for 16. Brad Ransley also did well taking 2-18 as Moleworth continues on its merry way.

In 3rd Grade, Gretna had a big loss to DOSA at Gretna. The home side made 170 with captain Damien Hack top-scoring with 45. Newcomer Jack Gregson made a quickfire 41 and put on a great 57-run partnership with the ever-improving Mathew Perotti who did very well and remained 9 not out. In reply DOSA reached the target without losing a wicket. The Gretna bowlers tried hard, but it just wasn't their day.

In the other match in 3rd Grade, Bushy Park got out of jail when it defeated St Anne's by 31 runs. Bushy Park won the toss and elected to bat, but was bundled out for 97. Sixteen was the top score by Nathan Grant. In reply St Anne's couldn't handle the Bushy Park attack led by Nathan Grant who steamrolled the Crows lineup taking 5-28 and the visitors were all out for 66.

New Norfolk II had a good five-wicket win over Montagu Bay in 4th Grade. New recruit Aaron Drew belted the Sharks attack to all parts of Boyer Oval, hitting 10 4s and two 6s in his great score of 90. A special mention must go to young Blake Kemmler who opened the batting and although he made just two runs he hung around for 15 overs. With the ball for the Red Caps, Mitchell Rice showed signs of things to come with an excellent spell of bowling taking 4 for 20 off seven overs. Rice had a big day as he filled in for Rohan Heron in the field for New Norfolk I when Heron had to leave.

In 5th Grade, Molesworth II continued on its merry way with yet another good win, knocking off Bagdad by 40 runs. It was their young guns who did the work with the bat with Jacksyn Mann 33, Tyson Gray 30 not out and Josh Ransley 30. With the ball Larry Menzie took three wickets, but it was again Josh Ransley who stole the show having great figures of 2-9 from nine overs with five maidens. These youngsters have a big future ahead of themselves as they continue to perform week in week out.

Railtrack Riders on the move

THE Railtrack Rider tourist attraction has received a licence to expand its operations to National Park, the Maydena Community Association has announced. In a statement on Facebook, MCA secretary Tim Parkes says the community-owned business has had its expansion plan approved by Infrastructure Minister Rene Hidding MHA.

Railtrack Riders Pty Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Maydena Community Association (MCA) and was created as an employment initiative in the former logging town. The expanded operation licence will allow the operation to take advantage of the big numbers of visitors passing the National Park railway station on a daily basis.

"It is a significant expansion for our business and we feel confidant of success now that we can directly benefit from the large tourism numbers visiting Mt Field National Park," Mr Parkes said in a post on the Maydena Memories page on Facebook.  "The new timetable is yet to be announced but operations are planned to commence after Christmas. More details will soon be available on our website www.railtrackriders.com.au," Mr Parkes said.

Two council workshops this month

THE general public will have two chances to meet their councillors in an informal setting this month. Under the new structure approved at last month's council meetings, council workshops will be held on December 4 and 11, at 6.30pm in the New Norfolk Courthouse, Circle St. A third workshop would normally be held on the third Thursday of the month, but in this case it will be Christmas Day.

The new format for council workshops is an open session which the general public is invited to attend for the first half-hour. The remainder of the workshop is closed to the public. As these are informal sessions, no agenda is provided.

Green Army seeking recruits for local work

LOCAL young people aged from 17 to 24 are invited to apply to become part of a new team to undertake a variety of environmental activities on the banks of the Derwent and Lachlan rivers at New Norfolk. The team will be working in a traineeship capacity and will be removing weeds and enhancing local walking track facilities as part of the Australian Government's "Green Army" initiative.

The team will completing meaningful work in the local community including improving sensitive wetlands that are home to a number of native birds and platypus. The project starts soon and runs for six months.

The Green Army is open to young people including indigenous Australians, school leavers, gap year students, graduates and job seekers who are looking to develop skills, undertake training and gain valuable experience. Successful applicants will receive accredited training relevant to the industry, and a traineeship wage.

Shoe Mart to call it a day

The Shoe Mart is closing down.

LAST week's issue of the Derwent Valley Gazette carried the sad news that New Norfolk's last shoe shop is closing down. Opened in 1938, the local branch of the Shoe Mart and its sister store in Queenstown are the last remnants of a once mighty chain of family-owned shoe shops.

A closing down sale has commenced and both shops will close once the stock has been sold. Owner Mark O'Conor told the Gazette there would be some great Christmas bargains. He said there had been a general downturn in trade with the Queenstown shop particularly feeling the impact of the closure of the Mt Lyell mine,

 The first O'Conor Shoe Store opened in what is now Hobart's Elizabeth Mall around 1915 and a second branch was established at Moonah. The same family opened the Shoe Mart chain which started in Liverpool St, Hobart, and had branches in Queenstown (1934-2014), New Norfolk and another in Rosebery in the 1940s.

The New Norfolk branch opened in October 1938 in premises that had been completely modernised after being taken over from the late businessman and parliamentarian Mr J.G. Brown. When this building burned down the O'Conor family built three new shops on the site, which are the present 65, 65a and 67 High St.

In a separate notice in last week's Gazette, long-serving employee Marcia Bowerman thanked her customers and friends for their custom over the last 27 years.
