Band celebrates 20 years

Formed in 1993, the Derwent Valley Concert Band has amassed an enviable record of achievement over its first 20 years, including nine Tasmanian State Championship titles over the years and the Open B Grade Concert Band Australian National Championship in 2000. The band has travelled to Japan, Canada, Austria, France, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Poland, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark and China.
At a vice-regal reception at Government House in Hobart last Friday night, Governor Peter Underwood described the band as an iconic cultural institution in the Derwent Valley. About 200 members and friends of the band were guests of His Excellency and Mrs Underwood at the reception.
On Saturday night it was a full house at the Farrall Centre in North Hobart for the gala anniversary concert. A number of past members of the band returned to perform in the concert and many others were in the crowd. The next day, about 100 people attended a celebratory barbecue at Redlands Estate, Plenty.
The anniversary events included the launch of Volume 2 of Music in the Valley, chronicling the band's second decade from 2003-13. The book was written by Jane Hodgetts and about 60 copies were sold during the weekend.

Southern cricket - round two
AFTER their big win last week, New Norfolk II stayed on the winners list in fifth grade by easily accounting for Old Beach by a massive 224 runs in round two of the Southern Cricket Association at the weekend. It was a run feast for the home side with openers Richard Graham 51 and young Mitchell Rice 48 putting on a stand of 77 for the first wicket. Then Richard Munnings added 43 and batting at number 8 captain Josh Walsh batted extremely well making 72. His innings helped his team to the total of 319. In reply Old Beach was no match for the Red Caps who bowled out the visitors for just 95. Richard Munnings bowled extremely well capturing 5 for 16 off seven overs to totally skittle the Old Beach batsmen. Adam Nossiter also did well taking three wickets while old hand Graeme Rowlands picked up one.
In second grade New Norfolk I defeated Mackillop Beltas by five wickets at Cambridge Oval on Saturday. The home side won the toss and had a bat, making 10 for 144. The Beltas' low score was brought about by some good all-round bowling by Jamie Hill who captured 4-32 off 10, Stewart Rice 3 for 26, Josh Dykes 2-43 and Ashley Morgan 1-16. In reply the Red Caps were never troubled with openers Rohan Heron 28 and Stewart Rice 41 hitting the kookaburra to the boundary many a time, putting on an opening stand of 57. Ashley Morgan also did well with the bat to make 41 not out, while Adrian Eiszele made 11. New Norfolk is doing well so far this season and looks every bit as good as last season and will again be amongst the finals action.
Molesworth I continued its great start to the season with another big win, this time at the expense of Bushy Park. Playing at home, Molesworth won the toss and had first hit, making the good score of 10 for 201. Opener Nick Piuselli after a few chances top scored with 54. Piuselli was well supported by his captain Brad Coppleman who made 48. Down the order Josh Bomford made 25 not out and Jye County 16 while Jamie Adams got 10. In reply Bushy was bowled out for 81 in 19.1 overs. Molesworth's Josh Bomford skittled through the Bushy Park batsmen taking a haul of 6 for 22 off 9.1 overs. Nathan Eiszele also got amongst the wickets taking 3 for 25 off five overs. The Bushy Park details were not available at the time of writing.
Gretna I travelled to Richmond where in a great team effort they easily accounted for Richmond/Cambridge by 120 runs. Gretna won the toss and elected to bat, hitting up the very good score of 274. Batting at number three, the in-form Mathew Burns top-scored making 75 with 6 well struck fours and 4 sixes. Burns was well supported by his captain Glenn Blackwell with 36 runs, the pair putting on 95 for the third wicket. Aaron Maddox who played his 50th game for Gretna I batted well at number seven making a handy 42 with 7 fours. Openers Damien Hack 23 and Ben Rainbird 12 looked good before both being caught off the bowling of Webb. Corey Ransley 22 runs, Rhys Browning 14 and Todd Jarvis 10 added handy runs down the order, helping their team to a very defendable total. In reply the home side was never really in the hunt and this was mainly due to the great bowling by Craig Cunningham with his right arm spinners capturing 5 for 26 off his 10 overs. Todd Jarvis chipped in with two wickets while Aaron Maddox, Rhys Browning and Jackson Ackerley got one each. Richmond/Cambridge eventually bowled out for 154.
In fourth grade Gretna II travelled to Old Beach were they too stayed on the winners list, easily accounting for the home side. Gretna won the toss and opted to bat, making the good total of 6 for 181 off their 50 overs. Opener Bruce Emery made up for last week, making 58 as he and fellow opener Nick Wakefield (12) put on 47. Tom Allcock 43no and Daniel Browning 42no put on a great partnership of 85, both showing great concentration with Browning hitting 5 fours in his innings. In reply Old Beach was bundled out for just 83 in the 24th over. Peter Jelkic in his first game for this season bowled extremely well, picking up 4 for 9 off 5.3 overs. Matthew Eyles captured 2 for 23 while Daniel Browning again got amongst the wickets taking 2 for 29 off six overs. It won't be long before he is promoted to Gretna I! Opening bowler Cody Eyles also did well with 1-21 off six overs while captain Joey Eyles also got a wicket. Nick Wakefield did well in the field taking three good catches.
In the other fifth grade match Molesworth II went down to St Adians by six wickets at North Warrane.
The home side won the toss and sent Molesworth into bat, making the small total of 93 from 30.3 overs. After his great knock of 64 last week, young Dakoda Smith batted very well again making 39 (3-4s) of the teams 93 runs, top job cobber. Next best was another youngster in Brayden Chaplin who made 10 with one 4. In reply St Adians was rarely troubled, losing just the four wickets in the run chase. For Molesworth Aaron Triffitt bowled very well 1 for 18 off nine overs while Tyson Gray, Josh Ransley and Larry Menzie got one wicket each.
I heard on the grapevine that former New Norfolk junior now with TCA club Glenorchy, Jordan Banks-Smith, took the valuable wicket of Tasmanian and Australian player Tim Paine! Well done Jordy, lets hope there are many more big wickets ahead.
This Sunday the Tasmanian cricket youth league gets under way, with many juniors crickets from the valley taking part. Good luck to the Molesworth, New Norfolk and Gretna Juniors for the 2013-14 season.

Debra and Danny Crosswell have twin boys Zachery and Luke who have played with the club's junior teams for the past three seasons and are playing with the Under 15s again this season.
The club has fitted out the boys with new club clothing and replaced their trophies including Zachery's hat-trick trophy from last season. Debra was also presented with a replacement plaque for the one she received for helping with the juniors.
"We are very grateful for what has been done for us, the club is really a great family club and the boys enjoy it here, thank you to everyone," Debra said. The family is rebuilding in the same location and the club wishes them all the best.

Mayor declares his hand
DERWENT Valley mayor Martyn Evans has ended months of speculation by announcing his intention to seek preselection to contest the seat of Lyons as a Liberal Party candidate at next year's State Elections.
Mr Evans has made no secret of his political aspirations over the last year but did not reveal his allegiances until yesterday. There was some speculation the mayor would stand with Katter's Australian Party, having hosted party leader Bob Katter in New Norfolk and attended meetings with the Queensland MP in Hobart.
The Mercury newspaper has Mr Evans' announcement here.

Feds confirm link road study
DEPUTY Prime Minister Warren Truss today confirmed that the Coalition Government would stand by its pre-election pledge to provide more than $100 million in an economic package for Tasmania in line with the former Labor government's commitments.
“The Government’s Economic Growth Plan for Tasmania will fund projects aimed at stimulating Tasmania’s economy by supporting economic growth and jobs,” Mr Truss said. This includes $100,000 to fund a feasibility study into upgrading the link road between the Derwent and Huon valleys.

Men's basketball finals
THE Derwent Valley men's basketball finals started last Friday night. With a good crowd and some hot games it looks like basketball is well and truly alive again at New Norfolk.
The first game saw the highly rated minor premiers the Froff Dogs go down in a tight contest against the second spot Old Fellas. The Old Fellas stunned the more fancied Froff Dogs to lead by 14 points at the half-time break. The pace and skills of young gun Josh Wilton really shone through. The Froff Dogs slowly fought back over the remainder of the game and managed to tie the game with a magnificent three-pointer from Brett Booth close to full time. After a quick break the game moved in to five minutes of extra time which was just as close as the main game. Both teams took many shots and Rohan Herron seemed to take charge for the Dogs. It came down to the last few seconds with Rowan Collins of the Old Fellas making a magnificent basket with a fall away shot right on the buzzer. The Old Fellas are now through to the grand final and the Froff Dogs will play again.
The second game saw the third placed Flint Tropics take on the fourth-placed Odd Bods in another tight game. The young running team of the Flint Tropics got on the board early with some good three-point shooting from Larry Menzie and good running and skill from Josh Bomford and Kyle Hansen. The tropics got out in front by as much as 10 points only for the Odd Bods to pull the margin back to be level at half time. The bigger bodies and hard heads of the Odd Bods saw them put on more physical pressure in the second half to take the game away by 12 points. The young running legs of the Flint Tropics clearly took it out of the Odd Bods. Star centre Shane Woolford battled tirelessly for three and a bit quarters but was visibly spent in the last five minutes and was reduced to a slow walk up and down the court.
The Odd Bods will now advance to the second final and take on the more highly fancied Froff Dogs for a place in the grand final.

Molesworth I opening batsman Nick Piuselli scored an excellent 123 in his team's 26 run win over Montagu Bay at Boyer Oval. Piuselli has been a handy batsman for Molesworth over the years and belted 13 fours and 6 sixes on his way to the ton. The century-maker shared a 169-run partnership with new recruit Jamie Adams who also got amongst the runs with a well-made 79. Adams hit 6 fours and 1 six in a fine display of batting. Molesworth finished 9 for 272 off its 50 overs with Nathan Hay the next best batsman with 13. In reply the Sharks gave the Molesworth total a good shake, but were eventually bowled out in the 49th over for 246. Young Jye County the main wicket taker for Molesworth, finishing with 5 for 54 off his 10 overs which was a fine effort. Captain Bradley Coppleman picked up two wickets to be the next best with the ball.
In 5th grade New Norfolk II accounted for Molesworth II by the big margin of 139 runs. Big hitter Baxter Oliver smashed 101 in the Red Caps' big total, hitting 6 fours and a whopping 9 sixes! Oliver put on a real clinic for all onlookers while opener Richard Graham did his bit, belting 79 runs (8 fours and 3 sixes). Next best was young Mitchell Rice on 18 (2 fours) and M. Hugo who made 15. Of the Molesworth bowlers, Aaron Triffitt took 3 for 60 to be the main wicket-taker while youngtsers Josh Ransley and Jack Evans took two each and Brett Hodge and Bryce Kaye, one each. In reply Molesworth with only 10 players just couldn't manage to trouble New Norfolk's total and were bowled out for 138. But they didn't go down with out a fight, thanks to 15-year-old Dakoda Smith. Batting at number 8 he showed he is a player of the future, making a superb 64 which included 7 fours and 4 sixes. Smith has come through the juniors at the club and is every bit the cricketer in the making. The next best batman was Josh Ransley who made 12. Molesworth II has a very young side, but certainly do not lack commitment and this will go along way during the season. Of the New Norfolk bowlers it was the wicket master from last season, Josh Walsh, who took the excellent figures of 5 for 18 off 10 overs. Walsh took a swag of wicket last season and looks set to do it all again and adding to his great start he also was captain for the first time. Adam Nossiter bowled well 1 for 24 off 8 as did Richard Graham 1 for 37 off 9.
In the other 2nd grade matches, New Norfolk I just accounted for Richmond/Cambridge at Tynwald Park. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat and were bowled out for a moderate total of 134. Jamie Maddox was the pick of the Red Cap bowlers, taking 3 for 34 off 10 while Stewart Rice and Jamie Hill got two each. Brad Kemmler and Josh Rowlands got one each as did Richard Munning who bowled extremely well, finishing up with fine figures of 1 for 12 off 10 overs. In reply New Norfolk didn't start well, losing their first four wickets with just 28 runs on the board. Some runs from the middle order in Stewart Rice 36, David Maddox 25 and coach Adrian Eiszele 21, steadied things, but then New Norfolk was again in a spot off bother at 8 for 114 before Jamie Maddox 8 not out and Jamie Hill 8 not out steered their team to victory.
Gretna I easily accounted for Bushy Park who have be put up from 4th grade by 171 runs at Gretna. The home side won the toss and opted to bat, making the good total of 10 for 227 off 49.1 overs. Captain Glenn Blackwell batted well, top-scoring with 68, while Mathew Burns made 62. Opening batsman Damien Hack chipped in with 42, but from there things dropped off a little with Tom Allcock next best with 11. For the Bushy Park bowlers, all tried hard in the windy conditions with Nathan Grant and Mitchell Crosswell each taking three wickets while Nick Fenton and Trent Grant took two each. In reply Bushy were bundled out for just 56, Mitch Crosswell top scoring with 14 and Nick Fenton next best on 10. Of the Gretna bowlers, Adam Browning did the damage taking his best figures to date of 5 for 24 off 10. Browning bowled with complete control and poise giving his captain another option in the weeks ahead. Corey Ransley also did well taking 2 for 27 off 10 as did Jackson Ackerly 2 for 1 off 4 balls with the last two wickets in a row - maybe it will be a personal hat-trick next week Jacko. Keep your heads high Bushy, it's not an easy position you find yourselves in, being put up to 2nd grade.
In 4th grade Gretna II got off to a great start with a six wicket win over Wellington at Eady St on Sunday.
The home side won the toss and elected to bat, reaching the total of 10 for 89 off 31 overs. This small total was due to the good bowling from the Gretna young guns Daniel Browning 3 for 17, Brodie Gleeson 3 for 24, Cody Eyles 2 for 18 and Brock Nichols 1 for 20. Hepper Medal caps Weapon's year

Ross easily won the Les Hepper Medal with 49 votes - a massive 30 votes clear of last year's winner Michael Thompson on 19. Ross had a stellar season winning the SFL best and fairest award - the William Leitch Medal - along with the Huon Valley News player of the year and a best-on-ground performance in the grand final over Claremont. During the little dynamo's very entertaining acceptance speech, Ross outlined that he will be again playing with the NNDFC next season, I'm sure this was music to everyone's ears!
In a much closer count, hard man Tristan "Boofa" Triffett took out the reserves best and fairest award - the Roydon Howard Medal - with 35 votes, which was 10 clear of Clint Curtain. After a really consistent season, Triffett thoughly deserved the award. Speaking on the Tyga FM sports show one recent Saturday morning, senior coach Jon Murray said: "Tristan has all the attributes to be a senior player for sure and if he can get a good pre-season under his belt, he would be pushing for senior selection in 2014."
In the Under 18s best and fairest, Ryan Wakefield took out the J. H. Dixon Medal in a close count on 31 votes, just seven ahead of Mark Thurston on 24. Wakefield, who won the Under 15s B&F award last year, got a taste of senior footy this season and earned high phrase from senior coach Jon Murray. "He slotted in very well during his senior games and didn't look out of place one bit, he is a very talented player," Murray said on radio.
The NNDFC had a magical season again winning both the Seniors and Reserves Premierships and with the Under 18s finishing third, the future looks very bright. Since joining the SFL in 2000 the seniors have played in eight grand finals, winning five. The reserves played in eight, also winning five, while the thirds played in five and won three. The fourths contested two grand finals but lost both. With Hobart entering the SFL next season the bar will have to be raised as I'm sure they will be very competitive.
Well done to all coaches and committee members on yet another great season, lets hope we retain all players and continue on with this golden area.

Cricket season starts today
COMPETITION in the Southern Cricket Association is under way from today. It seems like just a few weeks ago that the last cricket season had finished, but here we are at the start of the 2013-14 season. All clubs from the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands have been busy preparing for what promises to be an excellent season of cricket.
The Molesworth club is the big mover in regard to new faces. There are all new office-bearers, including a new president in former player Craig Hay and a new coach in former Eagles premiership player David Adams. Adams' appointment has brought a list of new players to the club: brothers Jamie and Daniel Adams who played with Glenorchy in the TCA have joined the club while Nathan Hay from Claremont looks to be a good addition. These players and other shoulds account for their losses and one being the talented Ricky Martin who has transferred to Campania. Their is plenty of excitement around the Molesy boys and with all the hype, one would have to say they will be starting favourites in second grade.
New Norfolk has retained most of its players from last season and will again be coached by Adrian Eiszele. New Norfolk I finished third last season and will be looking to again be amongst the finals action for 2013-14. Rohan Heron has been appointed captain of New Norfolk I while Stephen Nichols again takes the reins of New Norfolk II. New players Nathan Cashion and Richard Graham will add to what is already a good list.
Bushy Park has done well in the last two seasons in fourth grade and have been put up to second grade. This is a big move for the Park boys, but I'm sure they will be leaving no stone unturned in challenging all comers. Bushy has retained all players from last season and has appointed Jason Crosswell and Troy "Wizard" Smith as joint captains. They also have some new office bearers and along with club stalwart Karen Fenton things should run pretty smoothly both on and off the field.
Gretna has retained all but a few players that have moved on, but on the gains they have youngsters Daniel Browning, Brodie Gleeson and Brock Nichols who have come through from the juniors. All three have showed great promise at training. Last season saw Gretna I make the finals for the first time since joining the SCA, finishing fourth. All players are very keen, including Owen Browning who is back after a few seasons coaching the clubs junior sides. Browning's experience will be very valuable, especially to the younger players.
The New Norfolk Cricket Club and Glenora District High School are again running Milo in2cricket for ages 5-10 years. New Norfolk has already started and is training on Thursdays and if you wish to join you can contact Leigh Berry on 0400 938 771. Glenora will start with a registration day at the school on Friday October 25 at 4.30pm and if you wish to sign up you can contact Annie McKenzie at the school on 6286 1301.

Dobson road open again

The Parks and Wildlife Service reports on its Facebook page that a very large swamp gum situated about 45 metres from the road had pulled out of the ground, bringing several other large trees with it, and blocking the road.
The hole left by the root system measured about 12 metres across. A Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources crew and Parks and Wildlife staff worked to clear the road using a 14-tonne excavator.

THE Lake Dobson Rd at Mt Field National Park has been closed due to multiple tree falls across the road in today's severe winds.
Staff from Parks and Wildlife and the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources are working to clear the falls, and will update when the road is open.

A Flood Watch Advice continues for the Huon River and the River Derwent.
In the 24 hours to 9AM Wednesday, rainfall totals up to 20mm have been observed across the Huon River basin, and up to 30mm in the River Derwent.
Further 20-50mm are possible in the same area from early Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, heavier in the western parts of the catchments.
River rises have been observed in the Huon river and the upper branches of the River Derwent this morning.
Forecast rain is expected to cause renewed stream and river rises during Wednesday with Minor flooding possible in some parts of the Huon and the Derwent rivers from late Wednesday onwards. Catchment specific warnings will be issued as required.
Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard where river and stream levels are high over the remainder of the week.

A Flood Watch Advice continues for the Huon River and the River Derwent.
In the 24 hours to 9AM Wednesday, rainfall totals up to 20mm have been observed across the Huon River basin, and up to 30mm in the River Derwent.
Further 20-50mm are possible in the same area from early Wednesday afternoon into Thursday, heavier in the western parts of the catchments.
River rises have been observed in the Huon river and the upper branches of the River Derwent this morning.
Forecast rain is expected to cause renewed stream and river rises during Wednesday with Minor flooding possible in some parts of the Huon and the Derwent rivers from late Wednesday onwards. Catchment specific warnings will be issued as required.
Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard where river and stream levels are high over the remainder of the week.

Damaging winds expected to develop during today over much of Tasmania.
Weather Situation
An intense low pressure system will pass well to the southwest of Tasmania today with an associated cold front to cross the state from the west this evening.
Damaging winds from the northwest of around 50 km/h with peak gusts of up to 110 km/h are forecast for the Western, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley, South East , North East, Central Plateau and Midlands forecast districts as well as inland parts of the Central North District. Motorists are advised that the gusty winds will make driving conditions dangerous.
Winds gusts of 102 km/h have been recorded at Maatsuyker Island in the past 6 hours.
The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
- Keep clear of fallen power lines.

Have your say on Willow Court plans
A DEVELOPMENT application has been lodged with the Derwent Valley Council for the necessary works to prepare the Willow Court Barracks precinct to be opened to the public early next year. The committee led by David Llewellyn is focusing its energy on the conservation of the barracks building, redevelopment of Bronte House and the establishment of a community area within the heritage precinct.
The development application is on display at the Derwent Valley Council for public comments, which close on October 21. A contract for the works has been awarded to Xsquared Architects in association with Inspiring Place landscape architects and the Centre for Heritage at Oatlands.

Junior cricket training update
THE Gretna Cricket Club's junior training will now take place on Fridays starting at 4.30pm. The next warning will be issued by 5pm Sunday.
Warning to Sheep Graziers
for the East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast and King Island forecast districts
Issued at 9:49am on Sunday 13 October 2013.Sheep Graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and southwesterly winds are expected during Sunday. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast and King Island forecast districts. There is a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.
The warning to sheep graziers for parts of the Central North and North East forecast districts has been cancelled.
The next warning will be issued by 5pm Sunday.

FLOOD WATCH FOR THE HUON AND RIVER DERWENT BASINS
Issued at 4.27pm on Saturday 12 October 2013
A Flood Watch continues for the Huon River and the lower River Derwent and is now extended to the upper River Derwent.
A cold front is moving over south-western Tasmania this afternoon, with another cold front crossing Tasmania during Sunday.
Rainfall in the order of 20 to 35mm is expected about the Huon and Derwent catchments overnight Saturday.
Forecast rain likely to produce renewed river level rises across the Huon River and the River Derwent basins (including the Styx and Tyenna river catchments) later today and again on Sunday.
A Minor Flood Warning is current for the Huon River basin.
River rises in the Lower Derwent are possible during the remainder of Saturday into Sunday as levels remain high in the Styx and the Tyenna rivers. Storages within the system are at high levels, and additional rainfall could put some dams in the upper and lower Derwent on spill.

Upgrade for esplanade river access

A grant has been provided from the Recreational Boating Fund and the completed pontoon system will be owned by the Derwent Valley Council. This will be similar to the temporary pontoon seen at this year's Derwent Valley Autumn Festival (left).
MAST has allocated nearly $1 million a year from recreational boating registration fees into the Recreational Boating Fund. Submissions are sought from from boat owners each year for worthwhile projects to be funded. More than $13.5 million has been spent on improvements to recreational boating facilities and services around the state since 1998.

FLOOD WATCH FOR THE HUON AND LOWER RIVER DERWENT BASINS

A Flood Watch continues for the Huon River and is now extended to the Lower River Derwent.
Rainfall totals in the order of 20 to 62mm have been recorded across the Huon River Basin and up to 35mm across the Styx and Tyenna rivers in the 24 hours to 3PM Friday, with additional 10 to 15mm still possible for the remainder of Friday.
A Minor flood warning is current for the Huon River basin. River rises have been observed in the upper reaches of the Huon and Picton rivers with river levels in the middle reaches of the Huon River expected to exceed the minor flood level late Friday evening.
River rises have also been observed in the upper reaches of the Styx and the Tyenna rivers, with river rises expected in the Lower River Derwent during Friday evening.
Renewed rises are possible during the weekend as series of cold fronts with showers will cross the State Saturday afternoon and Sunday bringing further 20 to 30mm of rain each day along the Huon River and Lower River Derwent basins.
