The corner of High and Burnett Streets in New Norfolk. |
Both sites were once home to landmark buildings that were destroyed by electrical fires. In New Norfolk's case it was the Lee Building, later known as FitzGerald's/Harris Scarfe and ultimately Banjo's Bakery. The prime corner site has sat vacant since the March 2012 fire.
A report in last week's Derwent Valley Gazette revealed that after two years of negotiations, an agreement had been reached between the site owners (Madra Pty Ltd) and the Derwent Valley Council. The owners will pull up the concrete slab and reinstate the site as a grassed area with tables and chairs. The small park on Lee's Corner will then be leased to the council until such time as the owners choose to put up a new building.
Please don't let the council design the area as they don't have the best ideas!!!! ie the horrible benches in Pioneer Ave and by the Lachlan Rivelet or lack of shade in Laskeys carpark or at the skate park!!!!!
