Washing your hands for 20 seconds is one of the most effective forms of infection control. Do this after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; after close physical contact with anyone who is unwell; after using the toilet; before and after eating; before, during and after preparing food; and after feeding or touching a pet.

Contributors to our community

IN addition to the major awards presented at the Derwent Valley Australia Day celebrations last month, community contribution certificates were presented to a number of groups and individuals.

Gwen Spinks: A volunteer member of the Maydena Fire Brigade for 15 years and a driver of the Maydena community car.

Jaidyn Daniels: As a New Norfolk High School student, Jaidyn has been a Beacon Foundation Student Ambassador involved in the largest speed careers day, 25th anniversary Beacon Foundation luncheon, Beacon Rocks Concert, mock interviews, and Guys Golf Days.

Denise Mills: A volunteer at St Vincent de Paul in New Norfolk for many years; a past volunteer at Corumbene Nursing Home and the New Norfolk Visitor Information Centre; a current volunteer at the Hobart Dogs Home.

Barbara Morley: An active member of the Magra CWA for many years and a past member of the Derwent Valley Sport & Recreation Centre management committee.

Alice Clarke: Alice has participated in many community events, such as Clean up Australia Days, Red Shield Appeals and Christmas Parades. A member of Council’s youth advisory group, Derwent Valley Youth Future Action Team from 2010-15; presenter on TYGA FM since 2012; a member of New Norfolk High School student leadership team in 2013; and a member of Council’s Community Road Safety Partnership Committee.

Pauline Bryant: An active member of the Magra CWA for many years and a past member of the Derwent Valley Sport & Recreation Centre management committee.

New Norfolk Can Hope Cancer Support Group: Long-term participation and local co-ordinating of  Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea, helping those affected by cancer.

Derwent Valley Community House: During Mental Health Week 2014, the Long Lazy lunch provided food, games, activities, information, fun and laughter to more than 100 members of the Derwent Valley community at no cost.

Lions Club of New Norfolk: The Lions Club of New Norfolk has been holding an All Day Morning Tea annually for more than seven years. Funds raised supports the Cancer Council and Derwent Valley community projects. Morning teas are provided to patrons at the Lions clubrooms and delivered by members to workplaces in the Derwent Valley.

Corumbene Nursing Home: The My Journey program preserves the oral histories of the residents and celebrates their significant contributions to the community. This program provides a stronger link between residents of Corumbene and the community.

St Brigids Catholic School: Students in the Chronicle Group are active participants in Corumbene Nursing Home’s My Journey Program, with students visiting Corumbene on a regular basis and interviewing residents about their life.
