On this tour, DVCB members will also work alongside musicians in community bands from Italy and Germany presenting concerts in unusual venues, at strange hours of the day and night, to audiences whose musical interests and expectations are quite different from those here at home.
The band will also participate in the World Association of Marching Show Bands European Championships in Rastede, Germany and in the World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
A “Farewell Concert", will be given at the Stanley Burbury Theatre at the University of Tasmania this Saturday, June 6, at 7.30pm. The concert will start with a rarely heard work by Paul Dukas – the fanfare from his ballet La Peri. This will be followed by a suite entitled Four Contrasts for Wind, by the Tasmanian-born Norwegian composer, Trevor Ford.
Soloists for this concert are the talented vocalists Marinda Trembath and 'Alopi Latukefu who will present four well-known, much-loved songs by George and Ira Gershwin and Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart: Embraceable You, Blue Moon, Someone To Watch Over Me, and They Can’t Take That Away From Me.
British works on the program are Alfred Reed’s wonderful arrangement of Nimrod (from the Enigma Variations) by Edward Elgar and the Second Suite for Military Band by Gustav Holst. The program will close with Australian folk songs. Bushdance is a work by Queensland composer Ralph Hultgren in which he makes skilful use of Australian folk-dance melodies to conjure up pictures of the outback landscape and in particular, the celebrations and dances that often place in the shearing sheds at the end of the shearing season.
