Montagu St to take a turn for the better

FEDERAL funding of $100,000 will provide a turning lane in a busy section of the Lyell Highway in central New Norfolk.

The Federal Member for Lyons, Eric Hutchinson, said the "black spot" funding would improve safety at the junction of Montagu and Burnett Sts.

The New Norfolk project is one of 35 black spot areas across Tasmania to be improved with $4.37 million in funding announced by the Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Jamie Briggs.

There were six reported crashes at this junction in the five years between July 2009 and June 2014. Two involved cars "rear-ended" while waiting to turn into Burnett St; two involved cars turning into Burnett St; and two involved cars turning out of Burnett St.

The federal funding will cover the cost of installing a dedicated right-turn lane, to allow traffic from the west to queue clear of the rest of the eastbound traffic while waiting to turn into Burnett St. Works are to be completed by July 2016.

    1 crash a year is black spot? The road is already wide enough for two cars to be adjacent. Spend the money somewhere else in the district.
