Peppermint Hill burn this weekend

IN conjunction with the Parks and Wildlife Service, Tasmania Fire Service and the Derwent Valley Council, the previously announced Peppermint Hill fuel reduction burn will occur this Saturday (31/10/2015) and Sunday (1/1/2015), providing weather conditions as predicted for the weekend don’t dramatically change. 

The Peppermint Hill refuse site will be closed to the public on Saturday and may re-open at midday on Sunday.

Public access to the Peppermint Hill reserve will be restricted. Please comply with directions from staff or on any signs. Tracks in the Peppermint Hill Reserve will be closed.

This burn may occur under suitable weather conditions and will generate smoke and flames. Residents should not be alarmed. You co-operation will be appreciated.

AUSTRALIAN Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has spent an hour in New Norfolk this morning, meeting about 250 locals and dignitaries from the Lyons electorate over breakfast in Bronte House at historic Willow Court.

The guest list included representatives from throughout the electorate, including business operators, community members, primary and high school students, members of parliament, local councillors and a gaggle of mayors from the south of the state.

Welcoming the prime minister to New Norfolk, Lyons MHR Eric Hutchinson said it was fitting that the event was being held in the largest town in the electorate. He went on to describe the municipality as the home of hops, cherries, the New Norfolk District Football Club and Her Excellency the Governor of Tasmania.

Mr Hutchinson touched on the significance of hosting the event at Willow Court, where the $2 million first stage of a conservation and redevelopment project has just been completed. He said the site's nomination for National Heritage List status had progressed to the full assessment stage.

As well as acknowledging the assistance of the Derwent Valley Council in preparing for the visit at short notice, the federal member thanked the Magra CWA for taking care of the catering requirements.

Mr Hutchinson introduced the prime minister to special guest Ken O'Brien and related the story of how Mr O'Brien had provided armchairs for use by Sir Robert Menzies and Dame Pattie Menzies during their visit to New Norfolk in 1954. The then prime minister gave an election speech in the Plaza Theatre in High St and Mr O'Brien, who lived behind his family business across the street, was asked to provide several comfortable chairs for the Menzies' use. Mr O'Brien still has the same chairs, 61 years later.

Mr Hutchinson told the assembled guests that Mr O'Brien was also a distinguished veteran of World War II and this was seized upon by the prime minister in his own opening remarks, saying it was a privilege to have Mr O'Brien at the event. "Thank you for your service to this community and your service to our country," Mr Turnbull said.

While not having any announcements to make during his hour at New Norfolk, the prime minister appeared to meet just about everyone present. He signed many autographs and posed for numerous photos, showing extreme patience in one or two cases. While being driven to his next engagement Mr Turnbull took to Twitter to express his thanks for the warm reception at New Norfolk and uploaded a photo of himself with Mr O'Brien.

How many Australian prime ministers have visited New Norfolk? At least six: Stanley Bruce in 1925 and 1929, Ben Chifley in 1947, Bob Menzies in 1954, Bob Hawke in 1990, Paul Keating in 1996, and now Malcolm Turnbull in 2015.

Round 3 - Derwent Valley games

OF the nine Derwent Valley and Central Highlands teams participating in the SCA this season, only Bothwell recorded a win during the Round 3 matches over the weekend. New Norfolk III had the bye.

After a good win in First Grade last week, New Norfolk I went down to St Aidans at Tynwald Park by 113 runs on Saturday. The visitors won the toss and made the good score of 10/231 off 50 overs. In reply the Red Caps finished with 9/118 off 38 overs. Run makers for the home side were Stewart Rice 27, Rohan Heron 25, Aaron Drew 20 and John Ferguson 14. Matthew Castle did not bat. Jamie Maddox did very well with the ball, capturing 4-28 off 9 overs while Josh Rowlands got 2-56 off 10.

In the other First Grade match, Molesworth I went down to Old Beach at Boyer Oval by 82 runs. From their 50 overs, the visitors made 6/225. In reply Molesworth couldn't get the job done and was bowled out for 143 off 34.3 overs. Captain Jamie Adams top-scored with 25 (two sixes) while at number 10 Dean King remained 23 not out (3 fours, 1 six). Brad Coppleman made 20 (1 four, 1 six).
Wicket takers for Molesworth were Dean King who had a good game with a fine spell taking 3-25 off 7 overs, plus Nathan Eiszele 1-35 (10) and Aaron Wingrove 1-46 (7).

SECOND GRADE
Saturday
GRETNA I went down to Wellington by 38 runs at Eady St. The visitors won the toss and sent the Warriors in to bat. Gretna did very well with the ball and dismissed the home side for 153 off 48 overs. The wickets were shared around five bowlers with Aaron Maddox 3-37 (10) and Todd Jarvis 2-11 (5). Spinners Ben Rainbird and Craig Cunningham snared two wickets each off 10 and 9 overs respectively, but mention must go to Corey Ransley's very tidy 10 overs taking 1-6 with six maidens.
With the bat, captain and opener Ben Rainbird led the way with a good 56 which included 8 fours. Once Rainbird was out with the score on 91, Gretna then lost 6 for 24 and the match was all over. Next best was Mathew Burns making 14.

THIRD GRADE
Sunday
BUSHY Park was defeated at home by the Knights by 45 runs. Batting first the visitors made the good score of 10/180 off 45.2 overs. Aaron Triffitt did well with his new club, taking 4-27 off 5.2 overs. Mitch Crosswell 3-16 off 7 while Troy Smith took 2-33 (10) and Blake Howlett 1-54 (10).
In reply, Bushy Park started well and at one stage was 2-71, but from here the wickets fell regularly and they were bowled out for 135 off 32.1 overs. After bowling well, Troy Smith opened the batting making 50 runs at the rate of about one run per ball. Captain Dylan Grant made 14 and Trent Grant 12.

In the other Third Grade match, Gretna II went down to Hobart by seven wickets. Having first knock, Gretna looked like making a very good score and at one stage was 4/113 but then lost 6 for 29 and finished 10/142 off 44 overs. Veteran Bruce Emery showed his experience making a very good 59 with 3 fours. Next best was another evergreen in Brian Smith with 17 while Zac Crosswell and Jackson Ackerly both scored 16. In reply Hobart lost just the three wickets in the run chase, finishing 3/144 off 34.5 overs. Darren Lennox the best of the Gretna bowlers with 2-22 off 10 overs, while young opener Brodie Gleeson who has bowled very well of late took 1-27 off 6 overs.
 
FOURTH GRADE
Sunday
BOTHWELL recorded its second win of the season with a very good five-wicket victory over Rokeby at Clarendon Vale. The home side had first hit, making 10 for 151 off 27.5 overs. Of the Bucks bowlers, Matthew Eyles 2/26 off 5.5 and Nathan White 2/22 off 4 were the main wicket takers. In reply, Bothwell finished 5/156 off 28.1 overs. In-form Mathew Eyles had a good match and top-scored with a fine 51. Tyler White continues to shine with 27 while Brock Nichols chipped in with 22.

In a very good match at Bagdad, New Norfolk II went down to the home team by just three wickets. Bagdad win the toss and sent in the Red Caps who made the very good score of 10/213 off 48.4 overs. This was thanks to a very good innings from veteran Graeme Rowlands who made 72 batting at number seven. Rowlands' innings included 12 boundaries. New Norfolk was 9 for 152 but a 61 last-wicket stand by Rowlands and Trent Mayne 2 not out, saw the team make a defendable total. Stephen Nichols made 30 while captain Jamie Hill got 27. In reply, Bagdad finished 7/214 off 46.3 overs. In a tight tussle the New Norfolk bowlers did well with Jamie Hill the main wicket taker with 3/30 off 8.3 overs and Kendall Bluett also doing well with 1-34 off 10. Spinner Ashley Morgan 1-36 from 10.

Molesworth II went down to a very good Richmond/ Cambridge side by nine wickets at Boyer Oval.
Molesworth won the toss and elected to bat, hitting up the good score of 10/186 off 35.2 overs. Captain Sam Triffitt led the way with a good 47 hitting 5 fours and Jake Foster supported well with 45 hitting 3 fours and 4 sixes. The pair put on 70 for the fourth wicket. Dakoda Smith was next highest with 12. In reply, the visitors had no trouble reaching the target, losing just the one wicket finishing 1/187 off 39 overs. Martyn Evans was the wicket taker with 1/25 off 8 overs.

SIXTH GRADE
Sunday
New Norfolk III had the bye. It has been said that the Bothwell Club will put in a team in Sixth Grade and will play in Round 4. This will see the bye eliminated and is very good start for the new club in the competition.

High School upgrade under way

UPSTAIRS classrooms in the main block at New Norfolk High School will be upgraded in readiness for the introduction of Years 11 and 12 next year. "We have recently been informed of financial support to refurbish classrooms upstairs in our administration building to host our Year 11 and 12 expansion," principal Adam Potito said in a recent school newsletter.

"This will create a fresh and modern space for our new senior secondary students," he said. The renovation works will mean that some classes will operate from another room for the last few weeks of the year. "We are fortunate to have several spaces to choose from and look forward to ensuring that this move goes smoothly and that all students are well accommodated," Mr Potito said.

The principal said it was pleasing to see the progress of an upgrade to student toilets and change rooms across the school. "This work has been quite a transformation. We also expect our office refit to be complete by early Term 4.

Improvements have also been carried out in the outdoor environment. "Our students and ground staff have been working hard to re-invigorate our grounds and gardens. Their work looks particularly good in the welcome spring sunshine," Mr Potito said.

Mark Horne is the Eagles' best for 2015

THE final curtain came down on the New Norfolk District Football Club's 2015 season when it held its annual vote count and trophy presentation on Saturday night. The function was held at the clubrooms and it was a great night.

In the Seniors best and fairest count, crowd favourite Mark Horne took out the Les Hepper Medal, winning by 32 votes from coach and last year's winner Caden Wilson. Horne started the season with Glenorchy in the State League, but returned to the club and polled consistently from there on.

It was a close affair in the Reserves best and fairest count, with Nathan Lester taking out the Roydon Howard Medal. Lester polled 78 votes, three clear of runner-up Jordan Gunther on 75 votes.

runner-up Hayden Bielleman.

For the Colts, it was Josh Whitford-Marriott who took out the J.H. Dixon Medal. Whitford-Marriott who also won the STJFL best and fairest award, polled 107 votes to be well clear of runner-up Hayden Bielleman on 88 votes. All three best and fairest counts were run by three cards of 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 votes per round.

Coach Caden Wilson gave a very good speech of the season that was and thanked club officials and its passionate supporters for their contribution. Ben Shaw did a great job as master of ceremonies and Vanessa Britten and David Banks put together an excellent presentation for the vote count. Club president Chris Lovell and Cathy Adams for prepared the supper.

ROADWORKS will cause delays on some roads in the Derwent Valley this week.

• Boyer Rd, between Dromedary and New Norfolk, pavement retexturing. Reduced speed limit with frequent lane closures between 7am and 4pm on October 29.
• Lake Dobson Rd, from Mt Field National Park to Lake Dobson, unsealed pavement repairs. Reduced speed limit with occasional lane closures between 7am and 4pm on October 30.

Big day at Australia's oldest pub

NEW Norfolk's 190-year-old Bush Inn Hotel celebrated its 200th birthday today.

Despite ongoing argument over the true age of the building, a great time seems to have been had by all today.

Ladies in period costume and a horse-drawn stagecoach out front added to the colonial atmosphere for the famous hotel's big day.

NEW Norfolk I registered its first win of the season with a very good seven-wicket victory over Old Beach thanks to some very good bowling by all of the six Red Cap bowlers. Old Beach batting first was bowled out for 90 off 44.2 overs. Joe McCulloch did very well taking 3-15 off 7 overs. John Ferguson sent down 8.2 overs taking 2-10. Veteran Stewart Rice also took two wickets for 19 off his 10 overs. Mention must go to Josh Rowlands who took 1-7 off seven overs including three maidens. Andrew Drew 1-17 off 7 including three catches. Josh Walsh 1-19 off 5. In reply New Norfolk had little trouble chasing down the small target, finishing 3-96 off just 18 overs. Opener and captain David Maddox remained 46 not out, with 30 of these runs coming in boundaries (6x4s, 1x6). Rohan Heron 23 (1x4, 1x6), Stewart Rice 10no (1x4, 1x6).

In the other second grade match, Wellington defeated Molesworth I at Eady St by nine wickets. Molesworth had first knock and finished 8 for 95 off 36.2 overs. Cody Neads again top scored with 25 (3x4s). Captain Jamie Adams 16 (1x4) and Jake King 15. Daniel Adams retired hurt and Brayden Hodge didn't bat. Wellington lost just the one wicket in the run chase finishing 1-101 off just 16.3 overs. Nathan Eiszele was the wicket taker with 1-21 off 6 overs.

SECOND GRADE
Sunday
IN a good run-scoring match, at Gretna, Derwent defeated Gretna I by 30 runs. Batting first the visitors made the very good score of 6/257 off their allotted 50 overs. Jackson Ackerly was the main wicket taker with 2-58 from 10 overs. Spinner Craig Cunningham was next best with figures of 1-19 from 10 overs. In the run chase, Gretna gave it a very good shake. Openers Ben Rainbird 19 and Craig Cunningham 44 gave the team a good start putting on 44. Then it was Jackson Ackerly 36 (4x4s) and Mathew Burns 65 (6x4s, 2x6s) teaming up and putting on a 97 partnership and getting the score to 148. From here Gretna lost 7 for 79 and was bowled out for 227 off 45.5 overs. Jordan Hastie stepped up from Third Grade and made a very handy 25 not out including 2x4s. Todd Jarvis made 15 and Tom Allcock 10.

THIRD GRADE
Saturday
AFTER a big loss in Round 1, Gretna II turned the tables to defeat St Aidans at Gretna by 35 runs.
Batting first, the home side was in trouble early at 2 for 1, but a good innings off 46 from opener Bruce Emery got things on track. Emery put on 37 with Johnny Smith 20 (3x4s, 1x6) and then 42 with Luke Wheeler 22 (2x4s) and then 32 with son Ryan Emery 10 (1x4). Aaron Browning 12 not out and Sam Booth 9 not out (1x4) got the score to 8 for 141 off 50 overs. Earlier, Azza Maddox was out for a diamond duck after being run out after not facing a ball. In reply St Aidans was bowled out for 106 off 33.2 overs. After not playing for six years, Johnny Smith sent down 10 overs taking 4 for 30. Dazza Lennox did very well 3 for 12 off 6.2. Azza Maddox 2-32 (9) and Aaron Browning 1-15 (3). Congratulations to Aaron Browning and Sam Booth on playing their first games for Gretna. Aaron is the 294th player and Sam the 295th since 1977/78.

At Shoobridge Park, Bushy Park made it two wins in a row by defeating the Mackillop Beltas by 8 wickets. The home side won the toss and had first hit making 10 for 93 off 23.1 overs. The small total was mainly due to the excellent bowling by Troy Smith who captured 7 for 40 off his 10 overs. Blake Howlett took 2-4 off just 1.1 overs while Trent Grant got 1-25 off 6. In reply Bushy made light work of the run chase finishing 2/97 off just 14.3 overs. Opener Nathan Grant played very well making 51 not out, while brother and captain Dylan Grant remained 23 not out. Troy Smith scored 12.
 
FOURTH GRADE

IN the match at Pontville, Bothwell went down to the Knights by 24 runs. The Knights had first hit making 6/175 off 50 overs. Mathew Eyles was the main wicket taker for the Bucks with 2-26 off 9 overs. Next best was opener Brock Nichols with 1-24 (10). Young Brodie White bowled very well also taking 1-9 off 6 overs. In the run chase, Bothwell fell short finishing 10/151 of 42 overs. Mathew Eyles batted well and top-scored with a good 54. Tyler White has been showing good signs with the bat making 17 while Darren Hawes made 16. Codey Eyles, Anthony White and Trent Rogers all made 11 each.

Rokeby defeated New Norfolk II at Tynwald Park. The visitors had first hit making the good total of 19/206 off 45.1 overs. Opening bowler Nathan Rice did well taking 3-26 off 8 overs while Captain Nathan Heron got 3-51 off 10. Liam O'Brien 2-34 off 10 and Cody Morgan-Coleman 2-5 off 2.1. In reply the Red Caps were bowled out for 147 in 39.2 overs. Nathan Rice had a good game and made 34 (2x4s). Nathon Heron 20 (2x4s). Trent Smith 12 (2x4s) and Nathan Cashion 19 not out.

The match at Boyer was over sooner than expected when Molesworth II lost to Bagdad by six wickets. The home team had first dig and was bundled out for 35 off 17.3 overs. Jason Mallinson the top scorer with 7. In reply Bagdad finished 4/39 off 12 overs. Joshua Nichols did very well taking 3/9 off 4 overs. Dean king was the other wicket taker with 1-6 off 4 overs.

SIXTH GRADE
Sunday
NEW Norfolk III recorded a good single wicket win over Wellington at Tynwald Park. The visitors had first knock making 10 for 147 off 47.2 overs. Todd Rusher bowled well 3-20 from 10 overs. Trent Mayne also did well 3-28 (9.2). Brad Kemmler 2-37 (10). Graeme Rowland 1-22 (10) and Coby Kemmler 1-11 (3). In the run chase, New Norfolk was going well and looked home and hosed with Todd Rusher capping off a good day making 64 not out (3x4s). Brenton Nichols 21 (2x4s). Coby Kemmler 19 (2x4s), Andrew Callander 13 (1x4). With the score on 6-133 things looked positive until they lost 3 for 2 and things were crook. But Todd Rusher and and young Jack Smith batted well and put on a very valuable 17 runs to give the Red Caps an excellent victory.

LIFT for local schools

SIX Derwent Valley schools will take part in an $18 million literacy and numeracy initiative announced by the State Government. Acting Education Minister Vanessa Goodwin said 80 schools would deliver the "Learning in Families Together" initiative.

"LIFT will help us to improve the educational outcomes of young Tasmanians in greatest need by encouraging greater cooperation than ever before between schools, students and their families," Dr Goodwin said.  "This is in line with the principles of Gonski; to lift education by targeting funding where it’s needed most."

The local schools involved are Fairview Primary School, Glenora District School, Molesworth Primary School, New Norfolk Primary School, Ouse District School and Westerway Primary School.

"The program will use multiple platforms to support parents and students and will include planned events, activities and other learning opportunities that promote better learning outcomes," Dr Goodwin said.

"The LIFT Framework is currently being developed by a Project Officer in consultation with the Reference Group to support schools to continue to build relationships and engage families. The Framework will align with both the Early Years Framework and the Australian Curriculum and allow for the flexibility required to meet the needs of individual schools," Dr Goodwin said.

THE New Norfolk Fire Brigade has been allocated a brand new heavy tanker that will give our local firefighters greater capacity to fight bushfires this season. Thanks to a church group's donation, the tanker has also been fitted with a world-class foam firefighting system.

Fourteen new heavy tankers were unveiled at the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) engineering section at Cambridge yesterday morning. The $3.5 million fleet was developed in-house by the TFS. "These new tankers represent the latest capital investment in the frontline of our fire service, and will soon enter service with brigades around the state," Police and Emergency Services Minister Rene Hidding said.

"The new tankers are fitted with Compressed Air Foam Systems (CAFS), which enhance firefighters’ ability to suppress fire," Mr Hidding said. "A generous donation of $166,000 from the not-for-profit organisation the Rapid Response Team has supported the TFS in fitting CAFS to six of the tankers, which are being allocated to brigades in communities touched by the 2013 fires."

The donation funded the fitting of the revolutionary foam system on the heavy tankers being allocated to the New Norfolk, Dunalley, Bicheno, Dodges Ferry, Nubeena and Bagdad fire brigades. CAFS uses significantly less water to produce foam concentrate for firefighting suppression.

Rapid Relief Team (RRT) spokesman Jurgen Vos said the organisation had worked for two years to raise the donation after many of its members experienced first-hand the 2013 bushfires at Dunalley and Molesworth. “The RRT volunteers provided catering services to TFS crews fighting those fires and were inspired by their bravery and commitment,” Mr Vos said.

“We saw how stretched those TFS crews were and wanted to ensure that the next time they faced a similar emergency they were better equipped to protect Tasmanians.” Mr Vos said the RRT membership was drawn from the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. The RRT sent out an appeal to the Plymouth Brethren community in Tasmania and interstate and was overwhelmed by the generosity received.

The Rapid Relief Team is a volunteer, not-for-profit organisation, set up to support local communities in times of need; it assists at charity events, helps the homeless and feeds emergency personnel during natural disasters. “We strive to practise true Christianity in our way of life,” Mr Vos said. “This includes being compassionate, active, and contributing citizens and doing what we can to help. It was a great pleasure to accumulate these funds to assist the Tasmanian Fire Service in the selfless work that is done for the community.”

Mr Hidding said the commissioning of the new tankers – complete with the latest safety features – will further strengthen the state’s response to bushfires. The CAFS system coupled with an Active Vehicle Location system would improve both the effectiveness and the safety of our firefighters.

Honour for local builders

THE local firm of N.T. & J.E. Browning & Son has been honoured by the Master Builders Association of Tasmania for its work in restoring a colonial cottage near New Norfolk.

The Brownings took out the award for Heritage Listed or Period Home Restoration/Renovation at the Master Builders Tasmania Awards for Excellence 2015 at the Hotel Grand Chancellor, Hobart, on August 15.

The award-winning project was the restoration of the old Godfrey house on the Lyell Highway at Sorell Creek. With thousands of cars passing by every day, it was a high-profile endeavour. Built around 1870, the brick cottage was painstakingly restored and extended.

The original structure was strengthened and braced, and period features including a convict brick chimney, fireplace, Georgian mantle, doors and blackwood flooring were retained. The modern addition includes a sandstone atrium connecting new to old. Read more about the restoration in the Mercury newspaper's Home magazine here.

Remembering Bobby Butler

AT St Matthews Anglican Church in New Norfolk, a lovely send-off was given to Robert George Butler recently. Born at the New Norfolk Cottage Hospital on December 24, 1942, to James and Winifred Butler, Bob or Bobby as he was known to most grew up at Bushy Park with his four brothers and three sisters. He attended the Glenora School where he was made a prefect.

After finishing school, Bobby worked for ANM (now Norske Skog) for 36 years and during this time also worked for Terrance Terry in his orchards for some 15 years. In 1960 Bob met Jill Walker and they were married in 1965. They raised three daughters and have four grandchildren.

Growing up, Bobby was known for his love of sports, playing football, cricket and golf. Along with Jill he played badminton for ANM for many years. During his football career, Bobby started with Hawthorn (Bushy Park) in 1958 & 1959 in the Derwent Valley Junior Football Association's Sunday competition). In 1959 he also played with Upper Derwent in the Southern Districts Football Association. In 1960 & 61 he played with the New Norfolk Under 19s.

From 1962-66 Bob played with New Norfolk District Football Club, putting in 12 senior and 76 reserve games. In 1967 he turned his hand to coaching and was appointed captain/coach of the Ouse Football Club in the SDFA. Under Bobby's leadership the team won the premiership, its first since 1939. 1968 saw the arrival of Bob and Jill's first child Katrina, so Bob took the year off footy. In 1969 he was again appointed captain/coach of Ouse and they were runners-up to Upper Derwent in the grand final.

In 1970 second daughter Alison came on the scene and Bobby again had the season off. In 1971 he was made captain/coach of Upper Derwent in the South Eastern Districts Football Association and then in 1972-73 he played with Upper Derwent before retiring at the end of 1973. Third daughter Narelle arrived in 1972.

Bobby was also a very talented cricketer. He began with the Coniston Club and then Glenora, but it was at Gretna where he made his mark as a player and captain and valued mentor to many young players. Bob captained the club for 12 seasons straight from 1970/71 to 1981/82, retiring at the end of this season. All up the club legend played in 14 grand finals for eight premierships including five as captain. He was made a life member of the club in 1977 and of the Derwent Valley Cricket Association in 1978.

Here he served as a board member of the DVCA and captained Country Week teams for many seasons. At his farewell dinner, Bobby was presented with a set of right handed golf clubs - those involved not knowing he was left-handed. So at age 42, Bobby took up golf at the New Norfolk Golf Club. He became a very keen golfer and would always tee off at 8.24am on Saturdays come rain, hail or shine. Bobby also helped maintain the course for many years and was a board member until March this year.

Bobby loved his sports and received many awards and made many friends along the way, and was renowned for his love of the Collingwood Football Club but his biggest love and finest achievement was his family. At his funeral, Bobby was summed up as being a humble, kind, caring man with a wicked sense of humour who adored and treasured his family and friends.

Weather Situation: Maximum temperatures reaching the low 30s, relative humidity down to 15%, and northwest winds averaging up to 40 km/h are expected.

For Thursday 15 October:
Very High Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast districts: East Coast, Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley and South East. Some bushfires breaking out will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. There is a possibility that people in the path of a fire who are not well prepared may be killed or seriously injured.

The Tasmania Fire Service advises you to:

• Check your bushfire survival plan - Now.
• Monitor the fire and weather situation on ABC radio or through www.fire.tas.gov.au.
• If power supplies fail, listen on your car radio.

The Tasmania Fire Service advises that if you are in an area of Very High or Severe Fire Danger:

• Get ready now to leave for a safe place.
• Leave immediately if fire breaks out near you.
• Only stay if your home is well prepared to withstand fire and you can actively defend it.

The next warning will be issued by 5am Thursday.

Total fire ban Thursday

A Total Fire Ban has been declared for the Southern Region (which includes the municipalities of Brighton, Central Highlands, Clarence, Derwent Valley, Glamorgan/Spring Bay, Glenorchy, Hobart, Huon Valley, Kingborough, Sorell, Southern Midlands and Tasman) from midnight tonight (October 14) until midnight tomorrow (October 15).

"The Bureau of Meteorology forecast for hot, dry and windy conditions makes it necessary to ban all fires out of doors in the Southern Region,"  Tasmania Fire Service acting Regional chief officer Hugh Jones said.

"The vegetation in many parts of the state is dry despite recent rains. Forecast conditions will cause any fires to develop quickly making control difficult," he said.

The Tasmania Fire Service encourages everyone who lives in or near the bush to take responsibility for their safety, the safety of their families and their property by having a bushfire survival plan and be prepared to implement that plan if required.

This ban includes the use of cutting, grinding, welding or other similar equipment in the open.

Campers and others who intend to cook in the open should plan to use gas or electric stoves. 

Operators of agricultural machinery used to harvest crops or slash grass are encouraged to take particular care, although their use is not included in this ban.

All fires should be reported by dialling 000.

More information about total fire bans, other fire use restrictions and current fires is available on the TFS website at www.fire.tas.gov.au

While the ban is in place please avoid non-essential water use. Turning off sprinkler systems and using hoses sparingly will help ensure that water is available for firefighting and protecting properties should it be required.

Use of machinery that emit sparks, such as grinding, cutting and welding tools are banned during a total fire ban as this type of activity has the potential to start fires.

People should monitor the local ABC radio station or visit TFS website (www.fire.tas.gov.au) to keep up to date with conditions.

All fires should be reported by dialling 000.

General advice on a day of Total Fire Ban

Tools and Equipment: Tools and equipment that use a naked flame or generate sparks such as welding or grinding, must not be used in the open air. If essential works are required to be done a special permit may be issued, after a thorough investigation of each application. Apply to your TFS Regional Office.

Barbecues that use wood, charcoal or other solid fuel are banned: Gas and electric barbecues are permitted subject to the strict application of the conditions set out below. Gas and electric barbecues provided in public reserves/campsites may be used providing:

• the barbecue is electric or gas fired
• the barbecue is fixed permanent structure.

Portable gas and electric barbecues may be used provided the barbecue is located within 20 metres of a permanent dwelling (mobile homes, caravans or tents are not classified as permanent dwellings).

Additional conditions that apply to the use of portable electric and gas fired barbecues and barbecues in public reserves and campsites:

• the area for 3 metres around and above the barbecue is completely cleared of flammable material.
• an adult is in attendance at all times
• a tap with hose connected is ready for use
• at least 10 litres of water is on hand in case of emergency.

IN a very close and high-scoring encounter at Tynwald Park, New Norfolk I went down to Wellington by seven runs. The visitors won the toss and hit up the good score of 9-238 off its 50 overs. In reply the Red Caps gave the target a real shake which was due to assistant coach John Ferguson who belted a 122 in his first knock for his new club. Ferguson came to the crease with the score at 1-14 and was dismissed with score at 197 hitting 14-4s and 4-6s. Josh Rowlands 26 and coach Todd Rusher 12 then put their heads down and got the team close, but it wasn't to be and the Red Caps ran out of overs. Aaron Drew 14 also did well down the order. Josh Rowlands 3-37 (10) and Josh Walsh 2-26 (6) were the best of the New Norfolk bowlers while John Ferguson took 2-41 (10).

In the first match for Molesworth I in first grade, the visitors went down to St Virgils by five wickets. Winning the toss and batting, Molesworth hit up the good score of 10 for 193 off 35.1 overs. Daniel Adams opened the batting making 14, but it was the young gun wicket keeper/batsman Cody Neads who played a very good innings of 67. Neads struck seven boundaries in a positive start to the season. Neads was well supported by Nathan Eiszele who also got amongst the runs making 64 (5-4s, 5-6s). The pair put on 102 for the fifth wicket, taking the score to 160. Josh Ransley then made 14 helping the score to nearly 200. In reply, the home team lost just the five wickets chasing down the total to finish 5-198 off 30.1 overs. Having a good match, Nathan Eiszele was the main wicket taker, finishing with 2-32 off 6.3. The match could easily have finished in Molesworth's favour, but six catches went down and as they say "catches win matches". Next week boys.

Playing at home, Bushy Park got on the winners list early by defeating Runnymede in a relatively close match. Bushy won the toss and had first hit, making the modest total of 10-158 off 35 overs. In reply the visitors who had just the 10 players nearly spoilt the party falling just 20 runs shy. Opener Troy Smith topped scored with 48 while keeper Shaun Fenton made 32 and Dylan Grant 13. Young Blake Howlett was the pick of Bushy Park's bowlers taking 3-18 (5). Mitch Crosswell took 2-1 (2) while Nathan Grant 1-14 (7.3) and new player Aaron Triffitt got 1-20 (3).

In the other third grade match, playing at home, Gretna II went down to a very polished Knights outfit by nine wickets. Winning the toss and batting, Gretna was bowled out for just 87 off 40.4 overs. Corey Ransley top-scored with 26 (4-4s) and Jackson Ackerly 13 (2-4s). In reply, the Knights made light work of the run chase finishing 9-91 off just 17.3 overs. Corey Ransley finishing with 1-21 (4). Congratulations to Adam Browning for playing his 100th game for Gretna.
 
FOURTH GRADE
Sunday
Playing its debut match in the SCA, the Bothwell Cricket Club sent a big message to the other fourth grade teams with a big 161-run win over New Norfolk II at Tynwald Park. Winning the toss and opting to bat, Bothwell made the excellent score of 7-247 off its 50 overs. This was thanks to its vice captain and opener Craig Davey who made a terrific 106. Davey remained at the crease until he was out with the score on 7-206. Matthew Eyles 38, while Brock Nichols remained 22 not out. Tyler White made 17 and Nathan Eyles 12. The wicket takers for the Red Caps were young guns Mitch Rice 2-28 (7), Will Banks 2-8 (2) and Rhys Franklin 1-28 (5). While Nathan Heron got 1-63 (10).
In reply New Norfolk was bowled out for 86. Nathan Heron and Nathon Rice top-scored with 16 runs each and Jye Bearman scored 10. For the Bucks, Matthew Eyles had a great game taking 4-19 (6). Peter Hanch did very well 3-11 (5) while Nathan White 2-17 (6) and Nathan Eyles 1-13 (5).

In the other fourth grade match, Molesworth II went down to Rokeby at Bushy Park by two wickets. Molesworth won the toss and having first hit made 10 for 126 off 27.4 overs. Batting at number seven, Martyn Evans made a very handy 44 (5-4s). Jake Foster made 18, captain Sam Triffitt 15. Nick Wakefield did very well making 13 and Brad Ransley 12. In the run chase, Rokeby reached the target off 38.5 overs, but only had two wickets remaining. Martyn Evans had a good day taking 2-12 (6) while Jake Bearman got 2-15 (7). Sam Triffitt and Brad Ransley got two each.

SIXTH GRADE
Sunday
In a good match, New Norfolk III went down to Derwent at Shoobridge Park by 36 runs. Winning the toss, the Red Caps sent the home side in who hit up the good score of 10-210 off 47.5 overs. In a total family affair the Kemmler boys cleaned up. Coby Kemmler was the main destroyer for the visitors bagging a excellent 4-15 (5) while brother Blake took 2-37 (10) and father and captain Brad Kemmler took 2-40 (10). In reply the Red Caps got fairly close but were bowled out for 174 off 35.5 overs. And again the Kemmler boys showed their talent, with opener Blake making 44 (4-4s), Brad 22 and Coby 12. However it was Lachlan Dootson at number nine who made a very valuable and top-score of 45 (5-4s, 1-6). Up the order for you next match Lachlan! Brenton Nichols made 10.

Due to lack of players, Molesworth III has pulled out of the roster.

Fire permit period starts

THE Tasmania Fire Service has declared a Fire Permit Period from midnight tonight for all of southern Tasmania and the Flinders municipality.

TFS acting chief officer Gavin Freeman said the longer term outlook was that the present dryer-than-average conditions will continue. "Without a change to the current rainfall levels, some parts of the state face an above-average fire season," Mr Freeman said.

A Fire Permit Period is not a ban on burning, but a means of co-ordinating and monitoring controlled burning. "This ensures fires are conducted safely and brigades are not called out unnecessarily," Mr Freeman said.

"Land owners throughout the state who are planning to conduct burns are still encouraged to do so, however they are now required to go through a relatively simple process of obtaining a fire permit prior to lighting.

"Campfires and barbecues do not need a permit, however, people must remain in attendance at all times whilst fires remain alight. Please check with your local council on burning restrictions," he said.

Have a blast at Gretna, Molesworth or New Norfolk

REGISTRATIONS are now open for the upcoming T20 Blast junior cricket program that will be conducted in the Derwent Valley for boys and girls aged 7-12. This is a super fun, social, safe, cricket program for boys and girls. The program is much shorter than traditional cricket, with a maximum of 90 minutes playing time. All the equipment is supplied.

The program will run at 5pm on Friday aftenoons, starting November 13. The venues will rotate each week between Tynwald Park and Boyer Oval and possibly a session at Gretna. The cost for the program will be $99 per person and this will include a Hobart Hurricanes shirt and hat, plus all equipment and insurance for nine sessions including a Hobart Hurricanes match day experience at Bellerive on December 22.

Frosts with temperatures down to -1 degrees are forecast for Tuesday morning in parts of the Midlands and Upper Derwent Valley forecast districts.

Please be aware: Temperatures at ground level can be many degrees lower than those recorded by standard weather stations, especially in calm conditions with clear skies.

No further warnings will be issued for this event.

Concert band offers to share its skills

WOODWIND, brass and percussion musicians of all ages are invited to take part in a concert band weekend at New Norfolk later this month.

The award-winning Derwent Valley Concert Band will host the event, which will include instrument tutorials, band rehearsals, a social evening, barbecue lunches and a concluding concert performance. School-aged players are particularly welcome.

The venue will be the band rooms in the War Memorial Hall, Circle St, starting at 10am on October 24 and concluding at 4pm on October 25. There is a fee of $10 to cover the cost of  catering.

Fuel reduction burn for Peppermint Hill

A FUEL reduction burn will be carried out on the Peppermint Hill Reserve at New Norfolk as part of the statewide effort to reduce the bushfire risk.

This will be undertaken by the Parks and Wildlife Service in conjunction with the Derwent Valley Council to help protect properties and communication towers in the area.

A date has not been announced for the burn, which will occur at short notice under suitable weather conditions and will generate smoke and flames. During burning operations the Peppermint Hill tip site will be closed and public access to the Peppermint Hill Reserve and lookout will be restricted.  Tracks in the reserve will also be closed.

Council meeting at Maydena

MAYDENA will be the venue for the Derwent Valley Council's monthly meeting this Thursday night. The meeting will be held at the Maydena School Hall, starting with a community forum at 6.30pm. This is an opportunity for ratepayers and residents to discuss any issues of concern. The formal council meeting will start at 7pm and the agenda can be viewed at the council chambers in New Norfolk or on the council website. 

Junior cricket vacancies at Gretna

GRETNA Cricket Club will field three junior teams this season and there are several vacancies in the Under 13 and Under 16 sides. Training is held at the Gretna War Memorial Oval on Thursdays at 5pm for the two Under 13 teams and at 5pm on Fridays for the Under 16 side.

A BRILLIANT solo move by former rower Sean Lake saw him claim stage one of the Tour of Tasmania between Strathgordon and New Norfolk this afternoon, while Canberra’s Ben Hill retained the leader’s jersey after finishing fourth.

After enduring variable weather conditions on the scenic 119.9km ride , Victoria's Lake attacked inside the final 15km, holding off Anthony Giacoppo and teammate Michael Schweizer to secure victory by less than a second.

“I am absolutely stoked,” the 2014 Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic winner revealed following his win. “It has been a while between drinks, and I was very happy with the way it panned out. I was out there by myself for about 15 minutes or so until the line, and then just held off the chase – having no time gap at the finish was a bit too close for comfort.”

A flurry of attacks was made immediately after the roll-out from Strathgordon, with the riders too focused on the task at hand to fully appreciate the spectacular scenery along the banks of Lake Pedder. A five-man breakaway quickly established a considerable time gap – stretching to over four minutes and 30 seconds at one point – before losing two riders and being absorbed back on the descent towards New Norfolk.

Lake soloed away just as the breakaway was caught, with the 23-year-old drawing on energy reserves to survive the climb towards the finish arch at Arthur Square in New Norfolk. “The last little

climb was pretty brutal,” he explained. “My legs were gone but I just managed to find something extra.”

The Jayco Tour of Tasmania - part of the Subaru National Road Series - continues tomorrow (Thursday) with a 106.2km road race departing from Ulverstone. Often the decisive stage in past Tours, an ascent up Gunns Plains will test the peloton before it reaches a picturesque seaside finish in Penguin.
