New Norfolk basketballers have good reason to smile

New Norfolk Basketball Association members celebrate their
win in the "No Mouthguard No Play" competition.
THE New Norfolk Basketball Association is one of only two Tasmanian recipients of a prize in the Australian Dental Association’s “No Mouthguard No Play” competition.

The competition required schools and sporting clubs to sign up to and implement the Australian Dental Association/Sports Medicine Austalia Mouthguard Policy without exception.

Clubs and school teams were also asked to send in a creative photo promoting mouthguard awareness. The seven winners received $1000 to use for sporting equipment.

Entries came from across Australia and from a range of sports including basketball, hockey, roller derby and rugby.

"The ADA continues to advocate the need to regulate the use of mouthguards in sports, particularly contact sports or sports that have risks of inadvertent collision," Australian Dental Association spokesman Peter Alldritt said. "Each year thousands of adults and children are treated for dental injuries that could have been prevented or minimised by simply wearing a mouthguard.”
