Australia's state and federal governments are taking action to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Use the links above to source the latest advice about what you can do to protect yourself and others. Washing your hands for 20 seconds is one of the most effective forms of infection control. Do this after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing; after close physical contact with anyone who is unwell; after using the toilet; before and after eating; before, during and after preparing food; and after feeding or touching a pet.

SATURDAY: Very high fire danger in the valley

 Fire Weather Warning
for the Upper Derwent Valley, East Coast, Midlands, and South East forecast districts

Issued at 3:21 pm EST on Friday 2 October 2015.

Weather Situation: Temperatures in the high 20s, low relative humidity, and northwest winds averaging 40 to 50km/h are expected. Wind gusts may reach 100km/h during Saturday, possibly 110km/h about the southeast.

For Saturday 3 October:
Very High Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast district: Upper Derwent Valley. Some bushfires breaking out will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. There is a possibility that people in the path of a fire who are not well prepared may be killed or seriously injured.

Severe Fire Danger is forecast for the following forecast districts: East Coast, Midlands and South East. Some bushfires breaking out will spread rapidly and be uncontrollable. Some people in the path of a fire may be killed or seriously injured.

The Tasmania Fire Service advises you to:
  • Check your bushfire survival plan - Now.
  • Monitor the fire and weather situation on ABC radio or through www.fire.tas.gov.au.
  • If power supplies fail, listen on your car radio.

The Tasmania Fire Service advises that if you are in an area of Very High or Severe Fire Danger:
  • Get ready now to leave for a safe place.
  • Leave immediately if fire breaks out near you.
  • Only stay if your home is well prepared to withstand fire and you can actively defend it.

The next warning will be issued by 5am Saturday.

Severe Weather Warning
for damaging winds
for people in the Upper Derwent Valley, King Island, Furneaux Islands, North West Coast, Central North, North East, Western, Central Plateau, Midlands, East Coast and South East forecast districts

Issued at 3:20pm on Friday 2 October 2015.
For all Tasmania for Saturday.

Weather Situation

A northwesterly flow is expected over Tasmania on Saturday with a cold front approaching the west coast in the evening.
DAMAGING NORTHWEST WINDS around 50 km/h with peak gusts of 100 km/h are forecast for all of Tasmania on Saturday. Damaging winds are expected to commence about the southern half of the state during the morning and gusts may reach 110km/h about the southeast. Damaging winds are expected to extend to the north of the state during the afternoon or evening. Winds are expected to ease statewide early on Sunday morning.
The State Emergency Service and Tasmania Police advise that people should:
  • Supervise children closely
  • Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment
  • Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings
  • Manage pets and livestock
  • Be prepared in case of power outages
  • Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving
  • Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice
