NNHS awards for 2016

NEW Norfolk High School's annual prizegiving assembly on December 6 recognised the efforts of a long list of achievers in all grades, including the first awards for Year 11 students at the school.

The major award of the New Norfolk High School Medal was presented to to Emma Browning who also won six other prizes.

The presentation evening was held in the school gymnasium for the first time in a number of years. Congratulations to all recipients and to the donors who make the awards possible.

for Midlands, East Coast, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Issued at 10:38 am on Friday 30 December 2016.

Reduced visibility in heavy showers will make road conditions dangerous during Friday in parts of southeastern Tasmania. Areas likely to be affected are the southern halves of the Midlands and East Coast districts, south of Ross and Swansea, and for parts of the Upper Derwent Valley and South East districts. Heavy showers are expected in these areas until mid-afternoon and should be fairly brief.

For information on any road closures, please contact your local council or the Police.

The next alert will be issued by 5pm Friday.

What's important to you about the river?

WHAT'S important to you about the River Derwent? NRM South and the Derwent Estuary Program have joined forces to develop a "River Derwent Plan" that will examine the security and improvement of water resources in the catchment area.

Interested community members are invited to a workshop session being held at the New Norfolk Library in Charles St, from 7-9pm on January 16. Topics will include:

• What do you value most about the Derwent River and its tributaries?
• What are your concerns for water quality and water security now and into the future ?
• What actions are needed to manage this waterway?

Summer fun at Mt Field

THE annual Discovery Ranger Summer Program is under way once again at many national parks, including Mt Field National Park in the Derwent Valley. A Discovery Ranger will offer free fun and educational activities at the following times:

Thursday, December 29
11am – Green and Mossy (1 hour). Come on a short walk with Ranger Cat to learn about the rainforest along Russell Falls track. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre.
8.30pm – Creatures of the Night (1.5 hours, places limited). What goes bump in the night? Bring your torch and find out as we discover the nocturnal inhabitants of Mt Field National Park! Book at the Visitor Centre to secure your place.

Friday, December 30
10am – "Eww! What’s on my shoe?" (come and go, until noon). Have your boots cleaned and learn some simple outdoor hygiene tips to help you protect the places you love from nasty environmental hitchhikers. Meet at the big stump, half-way along Russell Falls track.
3pm – Tales of Tall Trees (1.5 hours). Come face to trunk with some of the tallest trees in the world and learn about how they came to call Mt Field home. Meet at the Tall Trees car park.

Saturday, December 31
2.30pm – Kids Crafternoon (come and go, until 3.30pm). Welcoming young and old to paint, draw and explore while learning about our unique plants and animals. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre.
8pm – NYE Quiz Night (1 hour). Bring your thinking caps along for an evening of light-hearted infotainment. Make new friends and build a team for the chance to win prizes and achieve trivial glory. Meet outside the Visitor Centre entrance.

Sunday, January 1.
2.30pm – Art in the bush (1 hour). Let your creativity run wild making temporary works of art from the natural materials all around you. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre.
6.30pm – Bedtime Stories (1 hour). Let Daniel the Devil and other wonder-filled stories carry you off to the land of nod. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre (bring a camping chair and teddies if available).

Monday, January 2.
11am – Ecology is Everything! (1 hour). Come on a short walk with Discovery Ranger Cat and uncover the secrets of the natural world all around you. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitors Centre.
2pm – Platyuses and Platypi (come and go, until 4pm). Learn everything there is to learn about this unique and amazing animal with Ranger Cat (including how to pluralize it). Meet at the big stump, halfway along the Russell Falls track.

Police seeking burglary witnesses

POLICE are appealing for witnesses after three businesses in New Norfolk were burgled in the early hours of this morning. All suffered damaged as a result of the forced entry and a small amount of property was stolen.

"The offender is described as being approximately six foot tall, stocky build, wearing dark clothing and light-coloured shoes. This person may have been walking in the High St area during the early hours of the morning," Constable Sarah Morris said.

Anyone who saw the alleged offender or who has information in relation to these matters is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or Constable Morris at Bridgewater CIB on 6268 4103.

Junior cricketers had a blast

THE Derwent Valley Milo T20 Blast participants had their final session on December 16. Over the eight weeks of the program the kids have shown lots of improvement, but most importantly enjoyed themselves throughout the course.

Credit must go to both the Gretna and New Norfolk cricket clubs for their efforts in providing the opportunity for our up and coming cricketers. Thanks also to Josh Walsh and his helpers from the New Norfolk club and parents from the Gretna club, whose time and effort was very much appreciated.

Lastly thank you to Simon Terhell and Captain Hurricane from Cricket Tasmania for making the last session extra special.

Not your average cricketer

GRETNA'S Brian Smith has proven age is no barrier when it comes to the game of cricket. The 54-year-old recently played his 300th game for the Gretna Cricket Club and in all, the evergreen cricketer has more than 600 games under his belt.

The wicketkeeper/batsman played his first game for Gretna in November 1999, aged 37, and since then has played 117 games for Gretna I and 183 for Gretna II. Now in his 18th season at the club, Smith has won 11 batting average trophies, six batting aggregates, three Best All-rounder awards, four Players Awards, 12 Most Catches awards and one Best-in-Finals, He has served as captain of Gretna II and played in two premierships. And that's just at Gretna.

The veteran also won many other awards with clubs such as Westerway-Maydena where it all began in 1981/82 at aged 19. The club won the flag that season. He then had 12 seasons with Glenora-Ellendale where he won nine Batting Averages trophies, played in two premierships and was awarded life membership.

Smith had three seasons at Old Beach, playing 55 games for one premiership. He also had stints at Kempton and Bushy Park, where he won the batting average. In season 1983/84 when playing for Glenora/Ellendale, he scored 1088 runs, making three centuries winning the Derwent Valley Cricket Association's cricketer of the year award, an title he would win on two more occasions, along with seven DVCA and SCA batting average awards. His highest score was a staggering 168 against Westerway/Maydena while playing for Glenora-Ellendale.

On a bad day at the crease, the word retirement can be heard from the bloke they call "Old Fossil", but when asked after achieving the magical 300, Brian declared he would go around again. "I'm feeling pretty fit for my age and I still love the game and the club has been great to me," said the farm hand of 28 years at Hop Products Australia in Bushy Park.

Well done Brian, you are a great character of of the game who is respected by all and you sure have been and continue to be a great cricketer and bloke, both on and off the field. In addition to add to his cricketing career, Brian has also played more than 400 games of football, but that's another story.

Brian is the 10th player at the Gretna Cricket Club since 1977/78 to have reached the 300 game milestone.

Swimming in the Derwent

SUMMER is here, but where are the cleanest places to swim in the River Derwent? The Derwent Estuary Program, State Government and local councils are once again co-ordinating weekly water quality monitoring of about locations in the estuary between December 6 and March 30.

Water samples are tested for enterococci, a faecal indicator bacteria used to assess the health risks associated with pathogens in recreational waters. Weekly water quality results will be available throughout the summer on the Derwent Estuary Program website and via Facebook.

All the monitored sites, including Fitzgerald Park at New Norfolk, are classified based on the latest monitoring results in accordance with the Recreational Water Quality Guidelines for Tasmania. Most urban areas experience poor water quality after heavy rain, including those sites rated as "good". Swimming is not recommended in the Derwent for several days after a heavy rain, and never in the vicinity of stormwater drains or urban rivulets.

Carols and lessons tonight

THE St Matthew's Choir and the Derwent Valley Concert Band will accompany the singing at the traditional Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at St Matthew's Anglican Church, tonight (Sunday) at 7.30.

This combined churches event has been celebrated at St Matthew's for about 30 years. It has its origins in Truro, Cornwall, in 1880, and has been adapted for use all over the world. Since 1918 it has been an annual fixture at King's College, Cambridge, and from there it has been broadcast to the world since 1928.

The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols will be at St Matthew's Church in  Bathurst St, New Norfolk, at 7.30 tonight. All welcome.

Southern cricket - round six

FIRST GRADE
After recording its first victory for the season last week, New Norfolk I went down to Old Beach by 19 runs. Playing at Old Beach, the home side had first dig making 10/227 off 46.2 overs. Stewart Rice bowled well taking 3-37 off his 10 overs as did Josh Rowlands with 2-45 (8.2). In reply, the Red Caps were bowled out for 208 off 48.5 overs. Stewart Rice had a good match as he continued on with his good form with the willow, making his third half century in a row with a very fine 87. Rice hit four fours and eight very good sixes that reportedly landed well out of the ground. Captain Jason Rigby the only other batsman to have an impact with the bat making 45 (3x4s).

SECOND GRADE
Molesworth had a good win, defeating Richmond/Cambridge by six wickets at Richmond. After bowling the home side out for 115 off 41.2 overs, Molesworth chased down the runs with the loss of just four wickets from 33.3 overs. Captain Jamie Adams made 44no (four fours) and opener Brayden Hodge 34 (one four, one six). Daniel Coppleman took 2-18 from 7 overs, Josh Ransley 2-4 (1.2) and Brad Coppleman 1-16 (10) with 5 maidens. Brayden Hodge 1-17 (7) with four maidens.

Gretna I went down to Sorell at Sorell by 58 runs. Sorell had first hit making 3/254 off 50 overs and in reply Gretna was bowled out for 196 off 42.2 overs. Ben Rainbird put in a good effort making 51 (two fours, three sixes) and Jon Smith made 45 (five fours). With the ball, opener Corey Ransley had the best figures of 1-27 (10).  Well done to Gretna I wicket keeper/batsman Glenn Blackwell who on Saturday played his 350th club game. Blacky has given the club great service, both on and off the field.

FOURTH GRADE
Playing at home, Bothwell I recorded a good six wicket win over St Virgil's. The visitors were bowled out for 104 off 36.5 overs. Matthew Eyles did very well taking 4-23 (9.5) as did opener Brock Nichols 3-24 (10). Brodie White was also very  good finishing with great figures of 2 for just 11 runs off his 8 overs. Craig Pursell took 1-42 (9). With the bat, young opener Tyler White showed no mercy making a fine even 50 not out, while fellow opener Simon Eyles made 33.

In the match at Bushy Park, the home side went down to Hobart by seven wickets. After being sent in, Bushy Park made 8/218 off its 50 overs. Shaun Fenton who has made 50 and 92 in the past two weeks, continued his great form, making another half century with 55. Geoff Crosswell was next best with 27 and Troy Smith 22. In reply Hobart finished 3/220 off 47.1 overs. Bushy Park used nine bowlers with Geoff Crosswell 2-46 (8) and Troy Smith 1-21 (10) the wicket-takers.

New Norfolk II went down to ladder leaders Bagdad by four wickets at Bagdad. Losing the toss and being sent in, New Norfolk was 4/20 and things didn't get much better finishing 9/91 off 27 overs. Captain Nathan Heron top-scored with 21 (one four). Aaron Triffitt didn't bat. Bagdad made it hard finishing 6/92 of 30 overs. Liam O'Brien opened with the ball taking 2-20 (6). Jamie Hill 2-32 (8) and Coby Kemmler 2-8 (2).

Playing at Shoobridge Park, Gretna II 10/172 off 41.2 overs lost to Derwent 4/174 off 36.3 overs. Luke Wheeler made a welcome return to form making 54 (eight fours). Opener Jake Campbell hung around making 29 (four fours) and captain Tom Allcock made 28 four fours, one six). With the ball, Jake Campbell took 2-67 (9.3). Adam Browning bowled very well 1-15 (10) and Aaron Browning 1-30 (6). Well done to Gretna II's evergreen Brian Smith who at age 54 played his 300th club game on Saturday.

SIXTH GRADE
Molesworth II let a chance of victory slip by when it lost to Brighton by 46 runs at Pontville. Batting first, Brighton made 10/112 off 29.1 overs. In reply Molesworth was bowled out for just 66 off 15.3 overs. Jack Evans top-scored with 17 (three fours) and Jeremy Nichols 14,(one four, one six). With the ball it was much brighter news with opener Jack Evans having a good day all round taking 4-24 (8). Timmy Nichols also did well with 3-12 (4.1).

SEVENTH GRADE
New Norfolk III accounted for the MacKillop Beltas by six wickets at Tynwald Park on Sunday. After bowling the visitors out for just 66 off 32.4 overs, New Norfolk finished 4-68 off 14.4 overs. Jake Bearman had a top day and top-scored with 23 (two fours) and took 3-28 (8.4) as did captain Graeme Rowlands 19 (one four) and 2-5 (5). Brad Kemmler took 2-10 (5). Cody Morgan-Coleman 2-10 (6) and Stuart Muir 1-9 (8) including four maidens.

EIGHTH GRADE
Bothwell II had a thumping 154 run win over Sandford at Bothwell. Having first hit the home side made the very good score off 10/264 off 49.1 overs. Young Blake Eyles batting at number seven made an excellent 57. Mathew Glover did very well also making 47. While Anthony White made 38. Troy Branch 24 runs and opener Michael White 22.  In reply Sandford finished well short 9/110 off 24.5 overs. Captain Peter Hansch bowled well 3-9 (1.5) as did young Rhys Franklin 3-36 (6) while Mark Pearce was tight 2-20 (7) and Mathew Glover 1-23 (6).

Youth League cricket latest

CONGRATULATIONS to New Norfolk Under 13s cricketer Jack Morgan-Miller who had a day out in the match against Wellington last Sunday. He made made his first half-century and finished on 51 runs, as well as taking 2-8 off three overs and two catches. Great work Jack!

Well done also to three Gretna juniors. During their Round 6 win over Brighton, Zac Wheeler made 66no and then took 4-12 off 6 overs, while Brayden Butler made 41 and Jacob Blackwell took 4-18 off 5.5 overs. Well done boys, keep up the good work.

T20 BLAST: The last Milo T20 Blast session will be held at Gretna this Friday at 4.30pm. There will be a sausage sizzle and a special visitor is expected from Cricket Tasmania. A group photo will also be taken, if each child could be in their T20 shirt and hat that would be much appreciated.

Weather Situation
A low passing to the south of the state this morning is bringing a very strong and gusty west to southwesterly flow behind a cold front which crossed Tasmania last night.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible about the south, the east coast, the far northeast, and the Furneaux Islands during the morning and early afternoon.
Winds are expected to ease during the afternoon today as the low moves away to the southeast.
Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover. 
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the King Island and Central North districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
In the 6 hours before 5am wind gusts reported included 148km/h at Maatsuyker island, 124km/h on Mt Wellington, 96km/h at Cape Bruny, and 91km/h at Maria Island.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.

for the Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts

Sheep graziers are warned that cold temperatures, showers and strong westerly winds are expected during Tuesday evening and Wednesday. Areas likely to be affected include parts of the Midlands, Upper Derwent Valley and South East forecast districts. There is a risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

The next warning will be issued by 5pm Tuesday.

Concern for welfare

POLICE are concerned for the welfare of a 59-year-old man from the New Norfolk area who went missing on Sunday morning and has not been seen since.

Dale Waverley Nicholson is described as being of slim build, 175cm tall, and may be wearing a black beanie. He is believed to be driving a faded blue 1993 Ford sedan.

Weather Situation
A trough just northwest of Tasmania will move over the state in the next few hours, with a cold front then expected just west of the state tonight as a deep low moves to the southwest. These features, combined with a slow moving high over the Tasman Sea, will result in very strong northwesterly winds aloft over Tasmania, which are expected to mix to the surface during the afternoon and evening over Bass Strait, the central north coast and the northeast. The low will then continue deepening as it passes just south of Tasmania early Wednesday, easing the winds about the north while increasing them about the south.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible about Bass Strait, the far northeast and the central north coast during Tuesday afternoon and evening. These winds are expected to extend to the south and the east coast early on Wednesday.
Winds are expected to ease from around midday Wednesday as the low moves away to the southeast.
Locations which may be affected include Devonport, St Helens, Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart and Dover.

Christmas parade's new direction

TODAY'S New Norfolk Christmas Parade was turned on its head and ran in the opposite direction to previous years, starting near the police station and proceeding to Circle St before making a return trip down High St.

A big crowd turned out in the reasonably cool weather to watch the parade which this year had 29 entries. Organised by the Derwent Valley Rotary Club on behalf of the New Norfolk Business Alliance, the parade was broadcast live on community radio station Tyga FM, with station manager Roz Chapman and Craig Farrell MLC giving a running commentary.

Santa Claus made two laps of High St before heading to Arthur Square where the Rotary Club was staging a Christmas fair.

The judging panel of Senator Jacqui Lambie, Lyons MHR Brian Mitchell, Lyons MHA Guy Barnett and Derwent Valley mayor Martyn Evans named Glenora District School as having the best presentation in the parade, followed by Fairview Primary School and the Derwent Valley Child and the New Norfolk Christian Leaders Association.

Christmas parade today

Christmas elves were busy in High St
last night, placing Christmas trees at the
base of some of the banner poles.

THE Derwent Valley Council will close a number of streets in central New Norfolk for the annual Christmas Parade today (Saturday).

The direction of the parade has been reversed for this year's event, meaning a change to the schedule of road closures.

The parade will now start from the police station end of High St, rather than the traditional kick-off point in Circle St.

Bathurst St will be closed between Pioneer Ave and High St from 10am-2.30pm.
High St will be closed from Bathurst St to Stephen St from 10am-2.30pm.
High St will be closed from Stephen St to Richmond St from 11.30am-1.30pm, including access from Charles St, Burnett St and Circle St.

The council advises that vehicles parked in High St at the time of the road closures may not be able to be moved until the completion of the parade. Parking restrictions will apply in Bathurst St between Pioneer Ave and High St.

"Residents and road users affected by this event are asked to make allowances for interruptions and delays while the parade is being held. Council apologises for any inconvenience caused during this time," council general manager Greg Winton said.

The parade starts at noon, progressing up High St to Circle St and back down again.

Junior cricket latest

THE Glenora Milo In2Cricket group held its final session for the year at Gretna last Friday afternoon.

After their session the kids enjoyed a barbecue and the presentation of goodies and a medal each. To cap off the day they watched the T20 Blast participants in action.

Co-ordinator Annie McKenzie thanked all the youngsters for attending during the seven-week program, as well as helpers Tash Farrow and Peter and Finn Roberts who were a great help.

DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h tending west to southwesterly late this evening are possible for parts of the Upper Derwent Valley, Midlands, South East and East Coast districts. Winds are expected to gradually ease overnight.
Locations which may be affected include Swansea, Orford, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover. 
In the last 6 hours the highest wind gusts reported were 94 km/h at Tasman Island and Mt Wellington, 91 km/h at Bushy Park, 87 km/h at Dunalley and Tunnack

* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.

Weather Situation
A cold front will cross Tasmania during the day and the associated low pressure system will deepen as it nears the southwest coast this afternoon.

FIRST GRADE
Persistence paid off for New Norfolk I when the Red Caps recorded their first win of the 50-over roster for 2016/17, defeating Rokeby by 52 runs. Wining the toss and batting, the home side made 8/201 off their 50 overs. After being 4/58, New Norfolk recovered well thanks to an excellent effort by Stewart Rice who made a valuable 69 runs with some big hitting. Rice's innings included seven sixes and two fours. Nathan Eiszele made 28 (one four, two sixes) as did Cody Neads who remained not out with two fours. Seb Wishart made 20 at number three. In reply, Rokeby fell short thanks to some great pressure bowling from New Norfolk. Opening pair Josh Rowlands 4-29 (9) and captain Jason Rigby 3-27 off eight overs bowled very well and tighten the screws early. Joe McCulloch 2-19 (7.1) and Nathan Eiszele 1-30 (8) were the other wicket takers. The Red Caps are now on the board and with this win will have plenty of confidence heading towards the Christmas break.

SECOND GRADE
Molesworth I made it three wins for the season with a very good 45-run win over Wellington at Boyer Oval. In a even batting performance, the home side had first hit, making the good score of 9/222 off 50 overs. Opener Brayden Hodge made 35 (four fours) as did captain Brad Coppleman who hit five fours and one six. Nick Piuselli also made 35, finding the boundary three times. Other opener Josh Ransley made a handy 27 (two fours, one six). Daniel Coppleman helped the tail wag with 21. In reply, Wellington was dismissed for 177 off 47.1 overs. Brad Coppleman put in a good day taking 3-30 off his 10 overs as did Brayden Hodge with 3-32 from 10 overs. Larry Menzie 2-36 off 8 overs and Josh Ransley 1-14 (4) were the other wicket-takers.

In the other Second Grade match, Gretna I had a three-wicket win over Old Beach at St Virgil's. Old Beach had first hit, making 10/127 off 38.5 overs. After getting the call up, Darren Lennox did the damage for Gretna, taking 4/23 off 10 overs in a good spell. The other main wicket takers were Craig Cunningham with 2-8 (4.5) and Luke Crosswell 2-29 (6). In reply, Gretna got the jitters but steadied the run chase finishing with 7/129 off 27.5 overs. Opening the batting, keeper Glenn Blackwell found some good form making a good half-century of 51, hitting five fours. Bruce Emery made 21 (two fours) as did Zac Crosswell who hit three fours.  Congratulations to veteran Bruce Emery who played his 200th match for Gretna I. He has now played 232 club games (200 for Gretna I and 32 for Gretna II).

FOURTH GRADE
Playing one short, Bushy Park got among the runs in a big way at home, recording a 28-run victory. After being sent in, they made 9/241 off 46.3 overs. This was due to Shaun Fenton who made an excellent 92, while Dylan Grant was just as good making an even 70. The pair put on a 163-run partnership. Earlier Trent Grant opened the batting making 17. In reply Derwent gave it a good shake but fell just short, finishing 9/213 off their 50 overs. Dylan Grant capped off a very good day taking 3-49 off his 10 overs. Trent Grant took 2-27 (10) and Jeremy Lowe 1-53 (10). In the end it was a very good win for the Bushy Park boys.

New Norfolk II recorded its fourth victory of the season with a good 54-run win over St Virgil's at St Virgil's. Batting first, New Norfolk made 10/150 off 39.3 overs. Aaron Drew top-scored with 24no, hitting three fours. Jamie Hill made 18 (one four) and keeper and opener Glen Williams made 17 while Mitch Rice made 16 (one four). Opening Red Caps bowlers Aron Drew 1-19 (9.2) and Cody Morgan-Coleman 1-9 (6) got the ball rolling. Josh Walsh backed up his team mates with 1-11 (7) and then club president Jamie Hill was thrown the ball by his captain and he didn't let him down. Bowling great line and length, Hill captured 4-15 from eight overs in a great display.

At Gretna, Gretna II 5/47 off 17 overs defeated Bothwell I 10/46 off 17.1 overs. The Bucks having first hit lost wickets regularly, due to the very good bowling from Corey Ransley who troubled all batsmen and finished with the excellent figures of 6-11 off nine overs. Adam Browning gave very good support and captured 4-34 off 8.1 overs. Simon Eyles top-scored for Bothwell making 17. In reply Gretna struggled early during the small run chase and at one stage the Bucks bowlers had bowled six maidens in succession. Craig Pursell 3-14 (7) and Nathan White 2-19 (8) kept the Gretna batsman honest and with a few more runs to defend it could have been a different story. Adam Browning finished the day off well and steadied the ship for the home team with 19no with three fours while opener Jordan Hastie made 13 hitting one four that just wasn't quite the six he was looking for. Gretna's fielding was a stand out during the match with all 10 dismissals being caught and no catches going down.

SIXTH GRADE
Molesworth II went down to home side Bagdad by nine wickets. Batting first, Molesworth were all out for just 39 off 22.2 overs. Top scorer came from number ten batsman Josh Nichols with 9 runs (two fours). In the run chase Bagdad finished 1-41 off 10.3 overs. Jake Sorrenson the wicket taker with 1-11 (2.3).

SEVENTH GRADE
New Norfolk III went down to St Anne's by four wickets at Tynwald Park. Batting first the home team made 10/124 off 47.5 overs. Jye Bearman made 23 to be the main run-scorer while Aaron Triffitt was next with 16 (one four). Nathan Cashion made 15no (one four). In reply, St Anne's finished 6/126 off 30.5 overs. Jye Bearman was again among the action and showing he has plenty of ability with both bat and ball finishing with 3-21 off 5 overs. Graeme Rowlands took 1-26 (10). There were two runouts.

EIGHTH GRADE
Bothwell II went down to Derwent at Bothwell by 45 runs on Saturday. The visitors had first dig, making 6/196 off their 50 overs. Brodie White 3-35 (10) and captain Peter Hansch 2-39 (10) were the main wicket-takers for the Bucks. In reply the home side was dismissed for 151 off 38.3 overs. Opener Michael White played a lone hand with a good knock of 65. Fellow opener Craig Davey was next with 13 and Blake Eyles made 10.

Twenty20 victory for New Norfolk III

New Norfolk III are the 2016 T20 seventh grade champions.

Twenty20 Superbash grand finals

A NEVER-SAY-DIE never say die attitude saw New Norfolk III take out the Seventh Grade Twenty20 Super Bash Grand Final last Thursday night. After being bowled out for just 83, the Red Caps knew they had to pull out all stops to have any chance of victory in the match that counted. And this they did, bowling out the Weily Park Rockers for just 40 runs. Opening bowlers Graeme Rowlands 1-11 and Jake Bearman 1-9 off their four overs began the pressure that was never eased. Then came the man of the T20 final, Cody Morgan-Coleman. After taking a hat-trick in the semi-final, the 16 year old again turned it on taking 2 for just 6 runs off his four overs to give him man of the match honours. Stuart Muir also showed his ability when it mattered most, taking 2-13 off his four overs. In the field the bowlers were backed up superbly with four run-outs of the Rockers batsman being effected. Earlier with the bat, David Mitlemore made 17, while Jye Bearman made 13 (two fours) and Graeme Rowlands made 13no with two fours. Well done Red Caps, it goes to show that in the funny old game of cricket, you are never out of it.

In the Second Grade T20 grand final, Gretna I went down to the Knights by 34 runs at Pontville. The Knights made 6/129 off their 20 overs and in reply Gretna made 10/95 off 19.3 overs. Corey Ransley put in a terrific effort with the ball to finish with fine figures of 1-8 off his four overs including a wicket off the first ball of the match. Aaron Maddox took 1-12 (3), Ben Rainbird 1-20 (3), Daniel Browning 1-30 (3) and Peter Jelkic 1-33 (4). With the bat, Bruce Emery made 24 (two fours), Aaron Maddox -9 (three fours), Corey Ransley 16 (one four, one six) and Rhys Browning 14 (three fours).

In the Fourth Grade final, New Norfolk II went down to Bagdad by three wickets. It was a close match with Bagdad having just the one over remaining once the target was reached. Opener Glenn Williams made a very good 40 with the bat, hitting five fours. Liam O'Brien and Josh Walsh took a wicket each.

Gretna I and New Norfolk II should hold their heads high as they gave it their best shot and everyone knows that in T20 matches it's a fine line between winning and losing.
