SEVERE WEATHER WARNING

for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in the Furneaux Islands, South East and parts of the Western, Upper Derwent Valley, North East, East Coast and Midlands Forecast Districts.

Issued at 4:51 am Wednesday, 14 December 2016.

Weather Situation
A low passing to the south of the state this morning is bringing a very strong and gusty west to southwesterly flow behind a cold front which crossed Tasmania last night.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 50 to 60 km/h with peak gusts in excess of 100 km/h are possible about the south, the east coast, the far northeast, and the Furneaux Islands during the morning and early afternoon.
Winds are expected to ease during the afternoon today as the low moves away to the southeast.
Locations which may be affected include St Helens, Swansea, New Norfolk, Hobart, Geeveston and Dover. 
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the King Island and Central North districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
In the 6 hours before 5am wind gusts reported included 148km/h at Maatsuyker island, 124km/h on Mt Wellington, 96km/h at Cape Bruny, and 91km/h at Maria Island.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11am Wednesday.
