Summer fun at Mt Field

THE annual Discovery Ranger Summer Program is under way once again at many national parks, including Mt Field National Park in the Derwent Valley. A Discovery Ranger will offer free fun and educational activities at the following times:

Thursday, December 29
11am – Green and Mossy (1 hour). Come on a short walk with Ranger Cat to learn about the rainforest along Russell Falls track. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre.
8.30pm – Creatures of the Night (1.5 hours, places limited). What goes bump in the night? Bring your torch and find out as we discover the nocturnal inhabitants of Mt Field National Park! Book at the Visitor Centre to secure your place.

Friday, December 30
10am – "Eww! What’s on my shoe?" (come and go, until noon). Have your boots cleaned and learn some simple outdoor hygiene tips to help you protect the places you love from nasty environmental hitchhikers. Meet at the big stump, half-way along Russell Falls track.
3pm – Tales of Tall Trees (1.5 hours). Come face to trunk with some of the tallest trees in the world and learn about how they came to call Mt Field home. Meet at the Tall Trees car park.

Saturday, December 31
2.30pm – Kids Crafternoon (come and go, until 3.30pm). Welcoming young and old to paint, draw and explore while learning about our unique plants and animals. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre.
8pm – NYE Quiz Night (1 hour). Bring your thinking caps along for an evening of light-hearted infotainment. Make new friends and build a team for the chance to win prizes and achieve trivial glory. Meet outside the Visitor Centre entrance.

Sunday, January 1.
2.30pm – Art in the bush (1 hour). Let your creativity run wild making temporary works of art from the natural materials all around you. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre.
6.30pm – Bedtime Stories (1 hour). Let Daniel the Devil and other wonder-filled stories carry you off to the land of nod. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitor Centre (bring a camping chair and teddies if available).

Monday, January 2.
11am – Ecology is Everything! (1 hour). Come on a short walk with Discovery Ranger Cat and uncover the secrets of the natural world all around you. Meet at the William Crooke shelter behind the Visitors Centre.
2pm – Platyuses and Platypi (come and go, until 4pm). Learn everything there is to learn about this unique and amazing animal with Ranger Cat (including how to pluralize it). Meet at the big stump, halfway along the Russell Falls track.
