Severe Weather Warning

for DAMAGING WINDS

For people in Western, Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East, Central Plateau, Midlands and parts of East Coast, North West Coast and Central North Forecast Districts.

DAMAGING WINDS IN THE WEST, SOUTH, NORTHEAST AND CENTRAL AREAS OF TASMANIA

Weather Situation: A vigorous cold front is crossing this evening with a strong westerly airstream to follow.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts near 100 km/h, are possible about western, central, southern and northeast areas of Tasmania. Wind gusts in excess of 110 km/h are likely about elevated areas above 500 metres.
Wind gusts are expected to peak during Saturday afternoon. Damaging winds then begin to ease late Saturday afternoon before contracting to the southwest and clearing during the evening.
Locations which may be affected include Oatlands, Scottsdale, Strahan, Queenstown, New Norfolk, Bothwell, Tarraleah, Hobart, Geeveston, Dover, Huonville and Dodges Ferry.
In the last 6 hours the strongest gusts reported were 144km/h Maatsuyker Island, 133km/h Scotts Peak and Mt Wellington, 124km/h Low Rocky Point and 106 km/h Cape Bruny.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Supervise children closely.
* Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings.
* Manage pets and livestock.
* Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment.
* Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004.
* Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving.
* Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5am Saturday.
