"Nothing of concern" in video

THE state's anti-discrimination commissioner had viewed the Willow Court paranormal documentary and found nothing of concern, this month's Derwent Valley Council meeting was told. Approved for release two months ago, the film was forwarded to the Tasmanian anti-discrimination commissioner following an expression of concern by her federal counterpart.

Produced by the Australian Paranormal Investigation Unit (APIU) the film documents a paranormal investigation at the Willow Court historic site. Mr Mackey said he had been advised by the council's solicitor that there was nothing in the documentary of concern to the anti-discrimination commissioner.

Mr Mackey told the council meeting that a memorandum of understanding would be developed with APIU to document the terms of the release.

HopFest a roaring success

A GREAT time was had at the Derwent Valley Concert Band's annual HopFest on Saturday night, with about 100 people in attendance at the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall.

The night celebrated the music of the 1920s-40s, played and sung by members of the band with great enthusiasm. Photos and a video from the night can be seen here.

Paul Beresford reports: Saturday was certainly not "The loneliest night of the week" at the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall where Jewel and myself plus about 150 others enjoyed a "Big Band Boogie 1920s-40s style" evening.

Music by members of the Derwent Valley Concert Band and visiting musicians and singers kept everyone tapping their toes and dancing till late in the night. Lessons were given in the Charleston and other dance styles and the happy crowd enjoyed great canapes followed by  a selection of hot main courses and a wonderful variety of desserts. Yours truly got into trouble from Jewel because I spilled my bread and better pudding down the front of my dinner shirt!

Thanks to the members of the Derwent Valley Concert Band  for the fantastic efforts that went into making this a great night out in the valley.

Pauline Bryant on her 40-year award

CONGRATULATIONS to long-standing Magra CWA member Pauline Bryant on the recent awarding of a special certificate recognising 40 years of service. Mrs Bryant joined the Country Women's Association in May 1973 and has served in various capacities over the years.

Mrs Bryant served as branch treasurer from 1975-78 and was elected president in 1990 and 1991. Another stint as treasurer followed in 1992 and then another three years as president from 1994-96.

For a great number of years Mrs Bryant helped with Meals on Wheels and she was always available to sell raffle tickets in High St. She has always been an active and willing helper at all functions held over the years. In recent years she has also been involved in selling Legacy Badges over the last few years.

Weekend footy preview - Eagles tipped

Round 4 Preview

ROUND 4 of the 2013 SFL season is played this Saturday and the games look like they could all be closely fought contests after results from Round 3. The Eastern Shore will be humming with SFL action as Sorell, Dodges Ferry and Lindisfarne all host home games, whilst action will also return to the Twin Ovals at Kingston and Abbotsfield Park Claremont. The question will be raised as to whether Kingborough can maintain its undefeated run as dependent on results. Anyone from position 1 to 5 on the ladder could be sitting in top spot by the end of this Round 4.

Dodges Ferry v New Norfolk at Shark Park at 2pm Saturday

DODGES Ferry returns home from a win on the road in a tight game against the East Coast Bombers last weekend to host last year’s premiers New Norfolk at Shark Park this weekend. After dropping their first game against Claremont in Round 1 the Eagles have delivered a much improved performance.

There is no harder task in the competition than playing against reigning premier New Norfolk. Coach Jon Murray has the boys back in great form as they trounced Sorell at Boyer by 129 points last Saturday.

The Sharks' defenders will need to keep an eye on Nathan Ross, Clint Curtain and Zeke Gardam who have all been amongst the goals in the first three rounds for the Eagles. If Dodges can keep it tight and not allow the Eagles too many avenues to goal they are a big chance to snare an upset win at home.

The experience of Jamie Curran and Simon Lampkin will be critical and Brad Jackson is sure to be given a key shutdown task for the Sharks. It’s expected that the Eagles will be too strong and register their third win for the season.

Bushy Park remembers

A BIGGER than usual turnout was experienced at the annual Anzac Day observance at Bushy Park today. A number of those in attendance travelled from New Norfolk and beyond, specifically to see the new monument that was unveiled earlier this month.

The service was organised by the IOOF Lodge and conducted by Salvation Army Lieutenant Jacky Laing in the hall at the Bushy Park War Memorial Swimming Pool. As part of the service, two students from Glenora District High School read the poems the had entered in the Sue Geraghty Memorial Prize.

Wreaths and sheaths were laid by representatives of various organisations including the lodge, pool and school. Many of the visitors stayed for a barbecue lunch and entertainment including card games and eightball into the afternoon.

THE New Norfolk Eagles stayed on the winner's list in Round 3 with the boys having a massive victory over the Sorell Eagles in their first game at home for the season. Senior coach Jon Murray would be much happier with the last three quarters of the game as Sorell had been leading at quarter time.

The game was well and truly over once the third quarter started to progress as the Eagles kicked 25 goals to Sorell’s five in the last three quarters of the game. The final scoreline was New Norfolk 28.22 (190) to Sorell 9.7 (61)

Clint Curtain led the scoring for New Norfolk with seven majors, whilst Zeke Gardam snagged five goals. Nathan Ross and Sam Hall both played excellent games.

Sorell showed some patterns of good play but still need to deliver four quarters to see them gain their first win of the season. Jed Williamson and Mykal Wiltshire were the best players and John Ferguson led the way on the scoreboard with four goals.

New Norfolk continued on from last week, beating Cygnet at their home ground by 17 points. In perfect conditions the young Eagles came out firing scoring two goals within the first seven minutes.
Jye Bearman scored the first and Tyson Eiszele won just about every tap he contested, while Jake Bearman, Ryan Bank-Smith and Jy Lester gave their all.
Thomas Rainbird kicked his first of three for the day, backed up by some long kicking by Adrian Long.  Each and every young Eagle put in 100 per cent in an exciting display to watch.

In fine conditions New Norfolk made the most of their opportunities to run out easy winners over Kingborough Gold. The Eagles backline repeatedly repelled Kingborough's attacks while the forward line combined well to kick a large score. Alex Blair and Josh Ransley with seven and five goals respectively proved hard to stop.

Under 14 Red – New Norfolk played Beachside A at Sandown on Saturday 20, with the game ending in a draw.  Ryan Browning and Tayla Pelham were the standouts on ground but it was an evenly matched game with both sides consistently attacking goals and showing great teamwork. Thanks to several Under 14 Black players for subbing.

Under 14 Black – New Norfolk played New Town at New Town early Saturday morning, coming away with a 6-1 win. Daniel Groom was sensational in defence, even storming through the midfield at one point to score a goal. Jordan Bailey well earned his three goals with consistent attacks, with Britney White and Braydon Wilson also scoring well deserved goals each. It was a good team effort all over the ground and players should be very pleased with themselves. Thank you to several Under 14 Red players for subbing.

The Under 6-12 teams did not play this weekend due to school holidays.

Gretna Cricket Club trophy night

THE curtain has come down on another cricket season for the Gretna Cricket Club with the annual dinner and trophy night at the Gretna Hall. About 80 people turned out to what was yet another excellent night.


During the trophy presentations Craig Cunningham, Joey Eyles and Mathew Burns collected four trophies each. Burns was later awarded life membership of the club and is a worthy recipient having been a loyal member playing a total of 22 seasons. He has won many awards and played in five premierships with Gretna I. He captained Gretna II in 2010-11 and is the 16th life member at the club.    

Club president Peter Rainbird spoke of the past season, noting that it was the first time Gretna I had played in the finals of the SCA since joining in 2008-09. He congratulated captains Ben Rainbird (Gretna I) and Todd Jarvis (Gretna II) for a top job throughout the season and noted that the juniors had now been going for three seasons and were the future of the club.

Liberals visit Corumbene

THE Federal Opposition's spokeswoman on ageing and mental health, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, recently paid a visit to Corumbene Nursing Home in New Norfolk.

Joined by Liberal Senator for Tasmania David Bushby, Lyons candidate Eric Hutchinson and Franklin candidate Bernadette Black, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells met residents and staff at the aged care facility, including chief executive Damien Jacobs, directors of care Lois Jenkins and chairman Peter Rouleston.

“Consultation is an essential part of formulating strong and effective policies that will produce positive outcomes and that’s why I’m here at Corumbene; to listen and discuss the issues and concerns that those in the sector have, as well as the experience of our elderly,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said.

“All the residents and the staff made us feel really welcome and put on a home cooked afternoon tea for us. It’s a really lovely facility in a beautiful setting,” Mr Hutchinson said.

Disability insurance session tomorrow

TASMANIANS can learn more about DisabilityCare Australia, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, at a number of upcoming information forums across the state, including New Norfolk tomorrow (Monday) afternoon.

Federal Minister for Disability Reform, Jenny Macklin, and Tasmanian Minister for Human Services, Cassy O’Connor, issued a statement on Friday, encouraging people with disability, their families and carers to attend the forums to receive important information on the launch of DisabilityCare Australia.

“DisabilityCare Australia, the National Disability Insurance Scheme, will fundamentally change the way we support people with disability,” Ms Macklin said

The series of information forums will allow service providers, people with disability, their families and carers and the general public to learn more about this important initiative. The New Norfolk session will be at the RSL Club in George St from 3.30-5pm tomorrow.

Councillors warned about rally

DERWENT Valley Councillors have been warned not to attend tomorrow's rally in support of the proposed major shopping centre at New Norfolk. More than 150 people on Facebook have already said they will be attending the event at Arthur Square at 2pm.

At the council's monthly meeting on Thursday night, Councillor Chris Lester asked whether all councillors were aware of the overwhelming groundswell of support for Raif and Roostam Sadri's development on the former Royal Derwent Hospital site, which had led to a rally being organised for Sunday.

General manager Stephen Mackey advised councillors not to speak at the rally as it may exclude them from voting on the development if it is considered again at a future council meeting. The meeting also heard that the Sadri application was "most possibly being withdrawn" and likely to be re-submitted.

"The best thing is not to be there," Mr Mackey said. "You are a planning authority and appeals in the planning tribunal have been lost on a technicality. We will seek legal advice but the best thing is to err on the side of caution," he said.

Planning officer Martin McCance said existing advice from planning appeal tribunal chairman Simon Cooper was that if a councillor attended a rally and was perceived as being in support of it, the councillor could not vote on the matter when it came before council.

Under 12: New Norfolk played Derwent United Gold on Friday night. Kasey Dillon played an excellent game in goal. Although we were against a really strong side, our team kept playing consistently for the whole game and continued to bond well. Well done. (Thanks to Sharon Rayner for this report.)

Under 14 Red: There was a slow start to the game against Zebras at Queens Walk early on Saturday morning with the Zebras dominating the first half.  Our players rallied after half time and finished strongly.  Our goalies Trent Nichols and Adam Blackwell did well to deflect many shots. Nathan Coleman showed great speed in defence to cut off the Zebras attack when all seemed lost and Jack Rose refused to let the opposition past.  Thank you to several U14 Black players for subbing. Under 14 Black: The team put a good fight against Olympia at New Norfolk with Olympia just that little bit stronger. Goalies Nathan Coleman and Tom Fulton deflected well. Britney White worked tirelessly on the wing and Josh Russell and Jordan Bailey penetrated Olympia’s defence to score a goal each. Thank you to several U14 Red players for subbing. Round 3 Preview

ROUND 3 of the 2013 SFL season sees Brighton host its third home game in a row while ladder leader East Coast Bombers will be welcomed home to Triabunna to host their first home game of the season. New Norfolk will have its first roster match at Boyer Oval since winning the 2012 senior and reserves premierships.

Patrons are getting great value for money watching a very even and balanced competition so far this season. It makes all football club members and supporters keen for Saturday to come around.

New Norfolk v Sorell at Boyer Oval at 2pm Saturday

Sorell will front up at the SFL “House of Pain” at Boyer Oval this weekend after dropping their first two games against Cygnet and East Coast Bombers and the supporters will expect a much improved performance.

The task gets no easier against reigning premier New Norfolk. Coach Jon Murray has the Derwent Valley boys back in the winner’s column against Brighton after a first-round loss.

Keep an eye on Nathan Ross who bagged five against the Robins to take his season tally to nine after two rounds and watch out for 2012 leading goal kicker and William Leitch medalist Michael Thompson who will be hungry for a big haul after not taking his place in the side last week.

It’s expected that the Eagles will be too strong and will register their second win for the season.

Shopping centre to rise again

THE developer of a major shopping centre at New Norfolk seems poised to make a strategic withdrawal rather than fight two appeals in the planning tribunal. A revised planning application would be then be lodged with the council in the hope of a smoother development process.

This latest twist in the long-runnng story was revealed at last night's Derwent Valley Council meeting, when two senior council officers confirmed that lawyers representing developer Roostam Sadri had advised that the application approved by the council two months ago was likely to be withdrawn.

General manager Stephen Mackey said Mr Sadri had informed him on Wednesday that his solicitor would be advising the Resource Management and Planning Appeals Tribunal that his application was to be withdrawn. Municipal planner Martyn McCance said the council was continuing to prepare for the hearing set down for early May, until advised otherwise.

Mr Mackey said Mr Sadri's legal advice was that he "stood a better than 50% chance to win the case," but he went on to say Mr Sadri did not want to be tied up in a court process that could cost tens of thousands of dollars and take two years to resolve.

Mr Sadri and his brother Raif Sadri are also behind the Gateway Housing Estate as well as a motel being established in the multi-storey former nurses home on the Royal Derwent Hospital site at New Norfolk. Their proposed shopping centre elsewhere on the same site includes:

• A large supermarket with baker, butcher and delicatessen
• Seven retail tenancies
• Petrol station
• Takeaway shop
• Future tenancy
• Five warehouse/showrooms

Brighton v New Norfolk  at Pontville

THE Eagles are back on the winners list after Round 2 with New Norfolk taking a comfortable victory on the road against Brighton last Saturday. Senior coach Jon Murray would be much happier with a positive result and victory for the Eagles who led Brighton at every change.

The game was well and truly over once the third quarter started to progress as the Eagles kicked five unanswered goals in windy conditions and Brighton failed to score. Nathan Ross led the scoring again for New Norfolk with fie majors, whilst Peter Jelkic and Zeke Gardam both scored two goals each with Ross and Josh Clifford both playing excellent games.

A disappointed Brighton coach Jamie Ling would have been looking to bounce back with an improved performance at home but was without numerous avenues to goal on this occasion as Jamie Tubb finished with fie goals for Brighton along with being Brighton’s best player on the day.

Junior cricket wrap

WITH New Norfolk, Molesworth and Gretna now all having junior cricket teams, and in2CRICKET being run at the Glenora School and Boyer Oval, the sport has a very bright future here in the Valley and Highlands. It is pleasing to see so many young boys and girls playing this great game.

We say a big well done to Alex Blair, Josh Farrow, Jacksyn Mann, Jack Stevenson and Ryan Banks-Smith who were selected in the Emerging Tigers squads, and also to Hannah Mann who was selected for the Southern Storm squad.

Another boy on his way up in cricket is Jordan Banks-Smith who was this season selected to represent Tasmania in the Under 17s carnival held in Hobart. Well done Jordy, you may well become the first player from the Valley to play for the Tasmanian Tigers.

While on the subject of juniors, a score that must not go unnoticed was when Gretna Under 13s made 1-235 off 20 overs at the Glenora School against Molesworth Green. In reply Molesworth made 3-129 off 20 overs! That's 364 runs off 40 overs - not a bad effort from the Under 13s!

Autumn festival tomorrow

Online community backs shopping centre

MORE than 2000 people have joined a Facebook group supporting the proposed development of a major shopping centre on the outskirts of New Norfolk.

At its February meeting the council approved Gateway Estate developers Raif and Roostam Sadri's proposal for a large supermarket with baker, butcher and delicatessen; seven retail tenancies; petrol station; takeaway shop; future tenancy; and five warehouse/showrooms.

Two appeals were lodged, which are understood to relate to insufficient parking and the decision of councillors to reject the municipal engineer's recommendation of a roundabout for the junction of Hobart Rd and Glebe Rd and substitute slip lanes as a means of dealing with the anticipated increase in traffic.


The Resource Management and Planning Appeal Tribunal will hold a three-day hearing starting on May 13 to consider the appeals.

Private enterprise reveals the tunnel

PRIVATE enterprise has got in first and provided a place to view part of the "tunnel" that once ran from Willow Court to the River Derwent at New Norfolk.

Old maps show multiple man-holes or ventilation shafts along the route of the tunnel, which was built as a sewer in colonial times. The route has been partially explored by experts hired by the Derwent Valley Council, but the full length has not yet been inspected.

One of the access points has been uncovered in the front yard of the former Nurses Quarters and an advertisement in today's Mercury newspaper invites visitors to bring their own torch and have a look.

Visitors are not able to access the tunnel, but there is a view down the shaft, which also contains a large drain pipe entering from one side.

Round 2 Preview

ROUND 1 certainly provided its share of upsets and Round 2 may prove no different whilst Brighton and Claremont host their second home game in a row, the dusters will be out at Pembroke Park, Shark Park and Anzac Park as Sorell, Dodges Ferry and Lindisfarne all host their first home games of the season.

After near perfect conditions for Round 1 during day and night heavy rain early in the week and further forecast showers may see players having to adapt to significantly different conditions in Round 2.

If you had asked a fellow football follower last week who would be in the top four in the Senior competition I wonder who would have picked a top four of Huonville, East Coast Bombers, Cygnet and Claremont? Needless to say that last year’s Grand Finalists New Norfolk and Lindisfarne would be in the bottom half of the ladder.

It’s great to see a really even and balanced competition and it makes all football club members and supporters eager for Round 2 to get under way.

Proud day at Bushy Park

The new Wall of Honour at Bushy Park

IT was a wonderful occasion at the Bushy Park Swimming Pool last Saturday when a brand new war memorial was unveiled and dedicated in the pool grounds.

Master of ceremonies Neville Fenton welcomed everyone to the special ceremony and introduced pool committee president Debra Crosswell who thanked everyone involved in the project that has seen a Wall of Honour erected in a little-used corner at the front of the property.

Looking for names on the monument

Committee secretary Lisa Fraser spoke about the history of the pool, which was built as a war memorial and was officially opened in 1958. Mrs Fraser said that after the passing of more than 50 years, many people were not aware of the facility's special significance. Thanks to a
Department of Veterans Affairs grant and support from the Derwent Valley Council and New Norfolk RSL, a Wall of Honour had been built to record and pay tribute to the names of servicemen and women of the district who had enlisted in World Wars I and II.

The official opening was performed by the Federal Member for Lyons, Dick Adams MHR, on behalf of the Minister for Veterans Affairs. Mr Adams said the new monument would become a focal point for the community and would enhance the significance of Anzac Day services at the pool. This was followed by a service of dedication conducted by Lieutenant Jacky Laing of the New Norfolk Salvation Army. "Painstakingly planned, detailed and boldly presented, this marker stands as a tribute, bringing honour to the names written on it, and our Lord God," Lieut Laing said.

New Norfolk Returned and Services League vice president Stephen Ball congratulated the pool committee on its initiative. Mr Ball marveled at the fact that more than 300 men and women from the Bushy Park district and surrounds had enlisted in World War I and a similar number in World War II. He remarked that many of the local men and women who served in Europe during World War I would not have left the Derwent Valley prior to enlisting. Following Mr Ball's remarks, a stirring Last Post and Reveille were performed by bugler Arthur Jones from the Derwent Valley Concert Band. Wreaths were laid at the base of the new monument by the pool committee, New Norfolk RSL and Glenora District High School.

Under 6 Red: “I was so proud of our team – what a fantastic start to our season! Campbell started the game well, scoring the first goal for our team and was well supported by Jade who scored three goals and showed great ball control. Hunter demonstrated a powerful kicking style with this kick-ins and Tristan showed some great speed on the field.  A great team effort everyone. I am very proud of you all – well done team!” Coach Lisa Fraser.

Under 6 Black: “All players gave it their best and it was a really good first game. Great team effort, all nerves had disappeared by the second half and they all enjoyed themselves!” Coach Ben Rainbird.

Under 14 Red: New Norfolk had an exciting game against University, keeping the ball in the forward zone for much of the game and making many attempts to goal. Great skills were shown by all players with Braydon Wilson, Josh Russell and Tayla Pelham the goal-scorers. Thanks to several Under 14 Black players for substituting.

Under 14 Black: It was an exciting game with New Norfolk and Nelson evenly matched and great teamwork shown by all. Trent Nichols and Thomas Fulton were great in goals with Billy Hawkins always the stalwart in defence. All players contributed to the win with Jordan Bailey and Aynsley Daft the goal-scorers. UNDER 16s: In ideal conditions the New Norfolk Under 16s were easily defeated by a bigger and faster Sorell side. The New Norfolk boys were second to the ball and rarely played as a team. THE Claremont Magpies may have pulled off the upset of the season in the first round with a pulsating come-from-behind win over reigning premier New Norfolk at Abbotsfield Park on Saturday. The Magpies had the Claremont supporters in fits of joy as Justin Wood kicked the final goal of the game to put the home side a point up. From the next centre bounce, Magpie Ashley Bennett took a mark from a quick kick, and kicked a behind to give Claremont a roaring two-point victory, 12.24 (96) to 14.10 (94). Even though New Norfolk had led for most of the day, it was almost appropriate that Claremont kept battling away and took the points.

Claremont had dominated the majority of the general play but suffered from poor goal-kicking, having 36 scoring shots to 24. Magpies coach Kim Excell told the Mercury the win was not the result of one tough preseason, but a much greater commitment. "We've worked for 18 months to get to this position and to be playing the best team in the competition - they are well coached and well drilled - we just persisted all day," a delighted Excell said. "We missed a few and bad kicking and bad footy but we just had to believe and we got over the line because 22 guys had a bit of a go. You start to wonder but I said to the guys I believe we were meant to win because they worked so hard."

In the third term, the Eagles led by as much as 21 points and seemed on track for a win, but despite kicking 7.18 after half time, the Magpies never lost faith. Justin Wood finished with three goals, including two in the final term, while Scott Jones kicked two majors playing on the ball. 2011 William Leitch medallist Nathan Ross didn't take long to stamp his authority on the game for New Norfolk, kicking the first of the day and finishing with four for the match. New Norfolk senior coach Jon Murray's first game in charge might have ended in defeat, but he can take heart from the fact the Eagles lost the season opener last year before going on to win the flag.

But for Claremont, Excell told the Mercury this win was worth more than just the four points. "There is more to it than just this game today, there are some good people around this club," he said. "This club will be around for many years where it looked like it was going to fold. We - everyone of us - has had that little input and made sure that the future is secure."

In the Reserves New Norfolk were victorious by 15 points and in the Colts it was again the Eagles coming out on top by 36 points.

Edwards named state Olympic president

THE Australian Olympic Committee has named Molesworth's Anthony Edwards as president of the Tasmanian Olympic Council. The five-time Olympian and triple Olympic medallist retired from competitive rowing after the London Games.

The State Olympic Council presidents are charged with the task of fundraising, education and promoting the Olympic Movement in the lead up to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. The Tasmanian Olympic Council works with athletes of all ages promoting sport and the Olympic movement and is actively involved in assisting Tasmanian athletes to achieve their goal of competing in Olympic Games.

New Norfolk's shock loss at Claremont

CLAREMONT pulled off a first-round coup defeating New Norfolk by two points in the SFL season opener on Saturday. There was better news for the Eagles in the reserves and colts, with 15 and 36-point wins over Claremont respectively.
