Edmondson sprints to victory at Pedder
LONDON Olympian Alex Edmondson clinched victory on stage two of the Tour of Tasmania in Strathgordon after the 19-year-old was a part of a breakaway for most of the challenging 120km race. A noted sprinter and reigning world champion on the track, Edmondson took out the stage ahead of William Walker and Luke Parker while Tasmanian Nathan Earle claimed the yellow jersey off the back of his team’s stage one victory on Sunday.
“I don’t know how I did that,” Edmondson said. “Coming to the finish on the last climb we got caught and I thought that was it, so I went to the back of the bunch, but somehow I found some fresh legs. The boys gave me an awesome lead out to the end,” the South Australian said.
Racing through stunning Derwent Valley scenery, Edmondson was part of an early breakaway that led for 110km until the tail end of the stage from New Norfolk to Strathgordon. Despite building a seven-minute lead over the peloton midrace, the breakaway riders were unable to maintain their position and found themselves caught as the race reached Lake Pedder.
Despite the setback, Edmondson surged forward in the final bunch sprint to take out the stage. “I didn’t really know what I was doing at the start, I just wanted to get out of there, so I made that little break and the boys rode pretty well,” he said. “That was lucky because I lost a bit of time yesterday, meaning I could just sit on the back of the break and save my legs.”
“The gap went out ridiculously fast. We all considered what was going on back there, but we just thought Huon-Genesys were controlling it and [must have been] confident their climbers could hit it over the climbs. We ended up blowing it in the end, it was a long breakaway,” Edmonson said.
Malcolm Rudolph was alongside Edmondson in the early breakaway and held strong as other riders were dropped throughout the difficult stage. With 25km to go, Rudolph launched a solo attack and built a two-minute lead as the remainder of the breakaway was swallowed by the roaring peloton. The Queenslander pushed hard with the finish line approaching, but was caught just four kilometres from the line.
“I didn’t quite hold on but I had a good day out,” Rudolph said post-race. “We thought we had to get a guy in the move and hopefully it would stay away and we’d get a stage win. It wasn’t to be, but we all had a go,” he said.
Nathan Earle now leads the tour after finishing ahead of teammate Jai Crawford to take the leader’s yellow jersey, however the pair remain on equal first-place time. Earle now sits one minute 43 seconds ahead of his nearest non-teammate competitor. “The boys rode really well today and they’re all looking really strong,” Earle said. “It wasn’t really the plan for me to take yellow today, but we’re in it now and we’ll try to defend it.”

NEARLY 120 riders will set off from New Norfolk on the second stage of the 2013 Tour of Tasmania at 10.30am today (Monday). The event has undergone some significant changes from past tours and is being managed by Cycling Australia for the first time.
The tour covers many parts of the state including the Derwent Valley, Mt Wellington, Meander Valley and Great Lake. The event also reaches Hobart, Launceston and Devonport as well as Ulverstone, Burnie and Penguin.
Today's section is a cracking 120km stage from New Norfolk to Strathgordon. The course begins by snaking its way along the river through Plenty, before leaving the river and travelling inland through the Bushy Park and Glenora. From there the course is relentless for the remaining 100 kilometres. This leg will prove a strong indicator as to who is in peak form and a true contender for tour honours at week’s end.
Stage three on Tuesday will ride deeper into the Derwent Valley, departing Hamilton for Lake St Clair at 10.30am. This road stage is new for 2013, utilising the Lyell Highway. It is another unyielding course that will provide a huge challenge to the riders and those looking to stay intact with the overall standings. Racing begins in the quiet but popular township of Hamilton on the banks of the River Clyde.

Club president Ray Williams paid tribute to all who contributed to the success of the event, notably Keith Howells, Roger Manton, Ron Moses and Barbara, Michael White, Alex Eiszele, Malcolm Little, Tom Jenkins, Adrian Hepburn and Graeme Jarvis. "They areall very special people that made this such an enjoyable championship event," Ray said.

Co-owner Bel Bird said it was great for the whole team to be recognised for the fantastic work they do. A range of awards was presented at the two-day conference at the Launceston Country Club Casino on September 21-22. Ms Bird was a finalist in the award for pharmacist of the year, while major awards went to two of her staff. These were:

Weather warnings for today
THE Bureau of Meteorology has issued several warnings for today, including:
- Strong wind warning for the Derwent Estuary and South-West Coast
- Small craft alert for the Central Plateau Lakes and South-West Lakes
- Warning to Sheep Graziers for the Upper Derwent Valley, South East, Midlands and other areas
The next marine wind warning summary will be issued by 4.05pm Thursday.

Not very RV friendly
Works manager Stewart Taylor said the signs had been installed at the direction of the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources, and that similar signs had been erected at Glenorchy.
The signs are on Molesworth Rd just off the Lyell Highway and on Collins Cap Rd just before the Wyre Forest Rd junction. There is no indication as to whether the signs are regulatory or advisory, nor whether they prohibit local residents from moving caravans and campervans to and from their homes.
Councillors asked to see a copy of the letter from DIER and in the meantime residents could be wondering why Collins Cap Rd is suitable for school buses and double-length gravel trucks but not campervans.

Good turnout at Gretna
DESPITE yesterday's poor weather, there was a good turnout for Gretna Cricket Club's junior registration day, with many new faces turning up. There will be no training for the Under 13s and 15s this Sunday, but training will resume the following Sunday, October 6, starting at 10.30am at the Gretna Sports Ground.
If your child didn’t make it to yesterday's sign-up, further registrations will be taken at training on October 6. Boys and girls are welcome and the registration fee for the 2013-14 season will again be $30. This covers insurance, affiliation fees, playing shirt, cricket equipment and trophies. Playing hats are $15. If you have more than two children wishing to play with the Gretna juniors, you will only be required to pay for the first two. Any additional children will be free.

Wade's grand final wrap
SFL grand final day yet again proved to be a great day for the New Norfolk District Football Club. Back-to-back premierships for both the seniors and reserves was just what every Eagles supporter ordered.
With the sky blue and the sun shining, the reserves made it a great start to the day, overcoming Kingborough by 18 points. The Tigers led at quarter time by just two points and at the main break stretched their lead out to 14 points. But from here on the Eagles kicked six goals to one in the second half, outrunning and out-classing the Tigers outfit.
Kris Cashion kicked two goals for the day, taking his tally to 67 for the season while Aaron Papera was awarded the Johnstone Medal for an excellent best on ground performance. Aaron along with his brothers Joshua and Joseph all played in the premiership win and to cap it off the three were all named in the best players. I'd say having three brothers in the one premiership team would be a first for the Eagles, well done fellas! Well done also to Mark Cashion on winning the premiership in your first year as coach, he must have been thrilled.
The reserves have now played Kingborough in the big one for the last three years, winning the last two. They have now won 11 premierships!
The senior side also continued on its winning way, accounting for Claremont by 43 points. The game was much closer than this for most of the four quarters. The Eagles led by 11 points at quarter time and 25 at half time. The Magpies got to within 10 points just before three-quarter time, but two late goals by the Eagles stretched their lead to 23 points at the last change.
In the final quarter, Claremont kicked the first goal and reduced the deficit to 17 points, but from here the all-conquering Eagles kicked four unanswered goals making it back-to-back premierships and securing their fourth premiership in five years and 25th over all.
Onballer Nathan "Weapon" Ross played another magical game, being awarded the Gorringe-Martyn medal for best on ground. After winning the William Leitch Medal and Huon Valley News best player on the Monday and a premiership on the Saturday, Ross should consider insuring his hands as every thing he seems to touch turns to gold or silver!
New find Zeke Gardam led the way up forward, kicking three majors as did Ross while the high-flying Michael Thompson kicked two. Coach Jon Murray must be pinching himself - last season he coached the reserves to the premiership and now he is a senior premiership coach. Excellent work Muzza, you have certainly molded the team very well.
Leigh Post returned to the Eagles for his last season of footy and won't forget his final game, going out with a premiership. The script could not have been written any better. Well done Postie and well played, you have been a great servant to the NNDFC and it's been a pleasure to watch you play.
Simon Crane on played his 100th club game in the senior grand final. He won't forget that in a hurry and he as amongst the best players. Well done.
The attendance for the day was said to be more than 5500, bettering last year's crowd of 4956. It was great to see many Eagles fans make their way to KGV, decked out in the red, white and black.
The party back at the clubrooms was just terrific with many family and friends coming along to help celebrate what was a great day for the club. Well done to all involved, the future looks very promising with the Under 18s finishing third with many fine players that will soon step up to senior level. Well done to coach Nick Clayton, top job mate.

Concert band anniversary
THIS year marks the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Derwent Valley Concert Band and the celebrations come to New Norfolk this Saturday, September 21, when the band will take part in the inaugural Derwent Valley Festival of Arts in the New Norfolk War Memorial Hall.
Next month the band will present a gala anniversary concert at the Farrall Centre at the Friends’ School, Hobart. To be held on October 26, this will be a wonderful evening of music-making with many past players returning especially for the concert. The music to be performed will represent pieces that have been significant in the band’s history. Entry to this concert will be free.

Open day at Mt Field
“World Parks Day highlights the critical role that green space plays in the wellbeing of communities. World Parks Day activities will be held at Cradle Mountain, Lake St Clair, Hastings Caves and Thermal Springs, Freycinet, Mt Field, Maria Island, Narawntapu, the Tamar Island Wetlands Centre and Highfield Historic Site," Mr Wightman said.
"We’re hoping the increased visitation to the state’s national parks and reserves will continue, with flow-on effects of more visitors experiencing our world-class parks and reserves. I encourage all Tasmanians to take up the offer and visit one of the many places of outstanding natural and cultural beauty in this state by taking a walk or a picnic. Parks and reserves provide a place for people to take on physical challenges and also offer a haven for time out with family and friends,” he said.
At Mt Field this Satuday visitors will be able to enjoy guided walks with a park ranger to see Tasmania’s tall trees and waterfalls. Meet in the visitor centre foyer at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Warm and comfortable clothing is recommended. For information, phone 6288 1149.

All the winning entries will be exhibited for public viewing at various locations within the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands over the following weeks. Magra man killed near Oatlands
A MAGRA man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on York Plains Rd, Lemont, west of Oatlands, yesterday morning. The accident was reported to police at around 6.40am but is thought to have occurred some hours earlier.
Police say the 27-year-old driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. They believe he had ties with the Southern Midlands area. Investigations into the cause of the accident are continuing and police remind drivers to exercise caution and drive to the conditions at all times.

Firearms amnesty this weekend
Tasmania Police will operate a mobile Police Station at the Granton Green Reserve this weekend to promote the state's permanent firearms amnesty. Anyone with an unwanted or unregistered firearm or ammunition can hand them over at the mobile police station for safe disposal. Police officers can also provide advice about the appropriate storage requirements.
“We want to remind people who have unwanted firearms that Tasmania has a permanent amnesty for handing them to police or to a registered firearms dealer,” Detective Acting Inspector Craig Joel said.
The mobile police station will be set up at the Granton Green Reserve (the "train park") this weekend between 9am and 5pm. There will be a designated parking area and people are asked to ensure their firearms are not loaded.

SFL grand final preview
Senior Grand Final: New Norfolk v Claremont at KGV Saturday 2.30pm
THE Claremont Magpies will be hoping to finish season 2013 the same way they started - with a win over New Norfolk. They have been unable to beat the Eagles in subsequent encounters but there is no doubt players in both sides will be entering the ground with hairs standing up on the back of their neck for this Saturday's grand final.
The Magpies have excited the competition in the 2013 season with fantastic wins and have executed the game plans well under coach Kim Excell. You would expect another disciplined performance against the premiership favourites at KGV Oval. Nathan Brown is the prime mover for Claremont and will need to be well held along with big forward Sean Salter who stood up in key moments in the preliminary final against Kingborough. Brown has had a strange lead-up to grand final day after polling the most votes in the William Leitch Medal count for the best and fairest player in the competition to finish five votes clear, but was deemed ineligible to win due to suspension for striking in Round 18 against Lindisfarne.
In an interesting twist before the big encounter, the William Leitch Medal was awarded to Nathan Ross of New Norfolk on 27 votes as the next highest vote-getter. The crowd at the game on Saturday should look forward to a mouth-watering contest to see these two great players step out for their clubs and possibly their individual games hold the key to their side’s fates and either would be an apt Gorringe-Martyn Medallist for the best player on the ground in the SFL grand final.
New Norfolk has an outstanding record this season, winning all but their first game and they should enter a close fought encounter as favourites. One of New Norfolk’s less recognised players Rohan Heron will be a key on grand final day as he is sure to have a big task as the general of the Eagles backline. The Eagles younger players have been sharing the load to ensure that the likes of Roger Belcher and 2012 William Leitch medallist and leading goal kicker Michael Thompson don’t have to always be the match winners.
This should be a close encounter for most of the day but the expectation is that the reigning premiers may prove a little too strong towards the end of the game. The greatest battle may be between the coaches – New Norfolk's Jon Murray has managed his players very well throughout the season, but has a list that is the envy of most coaches and will need to keep the structure of some outstanding individuals playing in unison and not focussed on their own performances. In the other box, the highly experienced and respected Kim Excell knows KGV as well as anyone and will have every players role planned from first bounce to final siren and no one loves to be a chance in the game when the “whips are cracking” more than the Claremont coach.
The Eagles are probably the side in slightly better condition with a two-week break during the finals series and the expectation is that they will set themselves for a crack at back to back flags come final-siren time on Saturday, but don’t be surprised if there is some real desperation and hardness in the Magpie team particularly if the game is still up for grabs late in the last quarter on Saturday. Don’t miss what should be one of the great SFL grand finals of the last few years.

Under 16s go down fighting
THE season has now come to an end for the New Norfolk Under 16s after they were defeated by a more determined Sorell outfit in the Southern Tasmanian Junior Football League preliminary final at Pontville on Sunday.
The Eagles were slow starters, letting Sorell get out to an early lead which they kept for the remainder of the game. Dakoda Smith played a fantastic game with his strong play all over the ground as did Torn Oates and Josh Farrow. Daniel Browning continued on with his good form in the ruck and is looking the goods to become a senior ruckman in the not to distant future.
Connor Salter marked well all day while Alex Blair again did his bit up forward kicking three great goals, while Shane Upton, Dakoda Smith and Wade Lockley kicked one each. The Under 16s should hold their heads very high as they all have done themselves and their supporters very proud and we hope to see you all playing again next season. Well done to all.

Claremont earns a final go at New Norfolk
CLAREMONT arm-wrestled its way to a date with New Norfolk in the SFL grand final this Saturday after a thrilling 13-point win against Kingborough in the Preliminary final at KGV last weekend. The teams had met a fortnight earlier and it was a repeat performance by a committed Mapgies outfit. “Again, when the whips were cracking, our boys stood up” Claremont coach Kim Excell told the Mercury newspaper. “The commitment to each other was great, but we haven’t won anything yet.”
Claremont had the jump on the Tigers early, posting the first goal through a clever snap by Matt Bird. Kingborough managed the next two goals, but the Magpies had a boost when Jake Gillie dribbled one through from the pocket and less than a minute later, landed a goal from 50m. The Tigers hit back late in the term before Ash Arnold gave the Pies a three-point lead at quarter time.
In the second stanza Kingborough was kept goalless, adding only two behinds as Justin Wood was superb in defence for the Pies. Inspirational tackles during the quarter by Dave Kamaric and Ben Sweeney gave every player in black and white a huge lift. When Tiger Ash Humphrey was helped from the ground with an ankle injury it appeared the Tigers may have run out of steam.
Claremont power forward Sean Salter took only four minutes in the third quarter to register the Pies’ first goal, before the Tigers struck back with a Jarrod Collis snap. Three minutes later Ash Woodhead split the sticks for the Tigers, and when Billy Lamprill kicked truly the Tigers had fought their way back to a three-point lead at three-quarter time.
Kingborough let the Pies off the hook early in the final term when Lamprill missed a gettable opportunity and from then on Claremont took the game by the scruff of the neck. Gillie, Kamaric and Salter combined to regain the lead and three minutes later Salter sent one soaring through at goal-post height from 50m.
Wood again stood tall in defence for the Pies and when Daniel Fox, Nathan Brown and Salter combined in an end-to-end play it was all over bar the shouting, with Salter nailing his fourth goal and helping his side advance to the grand final by 14 points.
Magpies deputy vice-captain Pat Bedford was named among the best alongside Braden Barwick, Wood, Scott Jones. Former Glenorchy players Kamaric and Salter looked at home on the spacious KGV ground. Kingborough named Matty Schenk, Jordan Lovell, Ryan Fielding, Tim Peterson, Brad Conway and Jack Philp as its best.

IN a close and high-voting count for the SFL Best and Fairest award last night, New Norfolk on-baller Nathan Ross won his second William Leitch Medal in three years. Ross, who returned to the Eagles this season after a year with Woodsdale, won with 27 votes - three clear of Kingborough's Grant King on 24 votes.
With one round to go, things got very close with King getting three votes taking his tally to 24 and equalling Ross. But with an excellent performance against the East Coast Bombers, Ross or "Weapon" as he is known, got the three votes and secured his second William Leitch Medal. Nathan Brown from the Claremont Football Club polled 32 votes and would have won the medal, but was suspended in the final round.

Ross has had an excellent season and has certainly punched well above his height and weight. After winning the William Leitch in 2011, Ross had a year with Woodsdale where he played in their premiership side and won the ODFA best and fairest. Ross and the Eagles now have a much bigger thing to accomplish - the 2013 SFL premiership! Going on his and the whole team's form this season, they should romp it in. If the Eagles can bring home their 25th senior premiership and 11th reserves premiership this Saturday, it will certainly make for one big party here in the valley.
Ross is the 16th New Norfolk player to win the medal since Jim Brown became the club's first William Leitch Medallist in 1948. The list is as follows:

Child safety ambassors in town this weekend
Mr and Mrs Morecombe are embarking on the trip to empower more Australians to educate children and their families through the national day of action "Day for Daniel" on October 25; and to promote the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum to all state ministers, education departments and schools across Australia.
The couple will visit the Derwent Valley Child and Family Centre in Blair St, New Norfolk, at 11am this Saturday.

ABC declares Hutchinson elected in Lyons
AFTER just over an hour of counting the votes in today's Federal Election, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation has declared that the Liberal challenger, Eric Hutchinson, has defeated Labor's Dick Adams after 20 years as the Federal Member for Lyons.

Where to cast your vote
POLLING places will operate at the following local venues for tomorrow's Federal Election. Voting is compulsory and polling places will be open from 8am to 6pm.

JUST ADD WATER: SOUTHERN HIGHLANDS IRRIGATION SCHEME GETS GOVERNMENT BOOST
The Southern Highlands Irrigation Scheme will receive $14.75 million from a re-elected Rudd Labor Government for the continued roll out of irrigation schemes around Tasmania. Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Joel Fitzgibbon joined Member for Lyons Dick Adams to make the announcement, saying the funding will secure the future for many landholders by giving them a permanent water supply and allowing them to diversify their farming.
“The $14.75 million from Federal Labor will deliver better productivity and incomes for Tasmanian farmers as they move from pasture to crops and horticulture,” Minister Fitzgibbon said. “The addition of higher value crops and higher production systems on farms will also bring training and employment opportunities in the Southern Highlands, particularly for younger people seeking well-paid and high-skill careers in agriculture.
“As farms diversify and plan production based on secure water availability, the skill set and education requirements of employees will greatly expand. This delivers great career prospects to Tasmania and the highlands. Importantly, the scheme will help local farmers seize the opportunities offered by the Asian-led ‘Dining Boom’ and grow their valuable export market. Dick Adams has been pushing to have the program funded since the last election and today’s announcement will help secure a stronger future for farmers and a stronger economy for Tasmania.”
The Scheme was first proposed over twenty years ago, with work commencing in 2008 as part of an original eleven irrigation schemes. Mr Adams said the Scheme would bring local farmers a huge number of benefits. “The Scheme will irrigate a further 3,500 hectares of arable land in the area. This means a total of 8,000 hectares will have a secure water supply.
“The Scheme also involves the construction of a 6,500 megalitre dam to store winter flow from the Shannon and deliver it downstream via 32km of pipe to irrigators in the Shannon and Clyde catchments. The area covered extends from 25km north of Bothwell on the Lake Highway to 25km south of Bothwell in the Hollow Tree Road.”
An estimated 75 per cent of the water to be purchased in the Scheme would be used on land which currently does not have access to irrigation water, significantly increasing higher value irrigated crops such as poppies, grass seed production and dairy. Expressions of interest for water have been consistently strong since 2009 when the Scheme was first discussed under its initial design.
Mr Adams said that this was one of the major economic initiatives for the State and he congratulated the proponents for their well developed proposal. “We have some really forward thinking farmers in this state and I know that this proposal will ensure Tasmania has a strong future in farming.” The total cost of the scheme would be over $22 million, with irrigator’s water purchases covering $8 million of the cost. Funding for this commitment will come from uncommitted funding in Caring for our Country that is already included in the budget.
